“Welcome back, sir,” Petraeus said to Gates. This is Gates’ 13th trip to Afghanistan as Secretary of Defense.
The two men began walking.
“You returning to normal, you gonna launch some attacks on Libya or something?” Petreaus joked to Gates.
“Yeah, exactly,” Gates joked back.
But then there’s no real price to be paid for laughing about the deaths of others so a few Americans can feel better about themselves.

About Firedoglake
Kill enough innocents and we’ll give you a medal or even another star.
May the souls of the slain children haunt their dreams.
“We’ll continue saying the bombs are ours, not yours,” Yemen President Saleh told General David Petraeus, then head of US Central Command, on January 2, The Guardian said, citing the leaked cables.

secret bombing inside other countries is always classy
At long last general, have you no shame?
That collateral humor, it sure keeps the spirits up when you made a killer booboo.
We are naught but victims of circumstance.
The question is when will ‘merca have the decency to stop their war crimes or will ‘merca never cease their international criminal activities in the name of democracy.
The Nobel Peace Prize war criminal Øbama is truly a lead conspirator in the crimes and should be stripped of clothing and thrown in a 6′ x 9′ hell hole of a gaol. A truly disgusting person.
Where is the video of the gunship tracking those children and then joking just before murdering them. Notice that this time there is no film of this war crime.
“gonna launch launch some attacks on Libya or something”
Yeah, that’s pretty funny stuff. Unfortunately I fear it’s just a matter of time.
Good morning all,
There’s a film with them yucking it up as they cut up those kids like firewood.
We “little people” who foot the financial and moral costs can’t see how much fun it is to blow away little humans.
Yes, Obama has taken the place of chancellor of the new american nazi killing machine and he’s loving it.
Hey big boy tell the girls that you had to assassinate nine innocents to keep them safe. LIAR.
Wasn’t general Davis Patraeus in the chain of command that covered up of Pat Tillman being killed by US friendly fire.
“little people who foot the fincancal and moral costs”
I think it must be part of that “shared sacrifice” I keep hearing so much about.
If they didn’t assassinate Pat Tillman, he would have wiped Patraeus’ ass within a Presidential election. They kill Democrats with a spine.
The difference between someone who needs to kill to fulfill his idea of macho man and a fine Human being is the big difference patraous and Tillman
Glib, smug and disgusting motherfuckers…
and celebrated members of OBAMA’s WAR MACHINE.
OBAMA IS A FRAUD.
DE-ELECT THE PRESIDENT IN 2012.
Good morning, pups. It’s Brooks, Cohen and Herbert today. Bobo has produced another “think” (and I’m using that term VERY loosely) piece called “The New Humanism” in which he babbles that researchers are coming up with a more accurate view of who we are and are beginning to show how the emotional and the rational are intertwined. It’s full of Bobo’s usual sweeping generalities of how “we” all function and what all of “our” motivations are. Mr. Cohen, in “Libyan Closure,” says the deepest reason to oppose Western military intervention in Libya is the utter moral bankruptcy of the West with respect to the Arab world. Why the hell should we care anything about the Arab world? They’re sitting on top of OUR OIL… Mr. Herbert, in “Flailing After Muslims,” says this week’s scheduled hearing into the Muslim community is an affront to America’s most precious ideals. It’s being led by a moron, so what did you expect?
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got toasted Thomas’ English muffins with lots of butter and your favorite jam. The second-in-command at work has informed me that they’re getting me a new computer… [sigh] Great. Assuming that I can remember how to transfer all my templates and macros I’ll still have to change all the commands that I’ve customized in Word, and try to figure out if my custom dictionary and Quick Correct entries can be transferred. GRRRRR. Have a great day.
Thanks, and you have my sympathies, when I was given a new laptop by my son it was lovely, except that I am still getting it to work the way I want to work. A year in.
Pity the poor banks… How can they manage to continue to do business?
David Brooks has a blog. I think this is new. The NYT describes it thusly:
“David Brooks’s Blog. The intellectual, cultural and scientific findings that land on the columnist’s desk nearly every day.”
Son of a gun, that’s entertainment.

Wish he’d print the really worthwhile ones that tell him how wrong he is, and the many ways he’s totally skewed from reality
Bobo’s had his bloggy thingy for quite a while now. It’s so corrosive that I won’t risk my Hazmat suit in there.
But not one federal dollar to Planned Parenthood, as we are unfortunately hearing re-argued again. How about not one federal dollar to DoD bombers or drones?
Here is a more accurate transcript of the exchange between General Petraeus and Secretary Gates:
Petraeus: “Good morning, Mr. Secretary, welcome back, sir!”
Gates: (Inaudible)
Petraeus: “Flying a little bigger plane than normal? You gonna launch some attacks on Libya or something?”
Gates: “Yeah, exactly!”
I’m definitely not religious, but to me it looks like the country has lost it’s soul.
The assumption on this, like a similar joke by Ronald Reagan, is that the mike was accidentally live and this was just a joke among friends. It is more likely that it is a diplomatic signal to the Libyans. And a deliberately ambiguous one.
We progressives have a bad habit of thinking that what folks in government say is what they feel, that it is not part of political or diplomatic kabuki that in more honest times functions to defuse conflict.
Given Gates’s previous statements before Congress, my first reading is that the US definitely is not going to be bombing anything in Libya. But that it wants to remind Gaddafi, who should know, that it is willing to accept civilian deaths when his people seek to hide military assets among civilians.
This was a diplomatic message, not a statement of principle.
It might turn out to be too clever by half.
May they be reincarnated in a country like the ones we attack so ruthlessly.
remarkable list of American military actions over a lengthy period of time.
The USA has been very busy around the world and at home.

There is something badly wrong with people like this that can be so casual about murder. This is the instinct that has to be stifled/supressed if the species is going to advance. This is the worst in species homo sapiens.
General Petraeus has nine rows of eye candy on the left breast of his tunic. The colorful ribbons are all for merit except one, a Bronze Star for valor which he was awarded when he was a major general. The reason for the award is unknown to me; the web scuttlebutt is that Dave was at Camp Victory near the Baghdad Airport when a mortar round exploded a few hundred yards away.
We devote 50% of our budget to military/security/aggression/’defense’/weapons.
What can we expect but this?
Stop the funding of this machine, and you may begin to end the insanity.
Simple /s
Bomb, bomb, bomb,
Bomb, bomb, Iran,
Oh, bomb Iran…
This whole attitude was adopted from the Israelis who conduct genocide on a daily basis. Collateral murder is the American version.
