When I heard that a Firedoglake membership program was in the works, the first thing I thought about was the strings attached to money. Every dollar you contribute to someone or something (or have contributed to you) has a near-invisible gossamer thread of spider silk attached to it. It’s not strong enough to exert any kind of pull at all, but as the dollars get stacked into bigger and bigger piles, those delicate threads weave together into strings, then ropes, then cables, then giant thigh-thick hawsers.
And therein lies the catch-22 for FDL: A web community this large and this activist needs enough money to keep the servers running, to pay all the outstanding people who make it worth reading, and to seize opportunities when they emerge, whether it be sending correspondents to report on events as they unfold, or sending thousands of enema bags to Alan Simpson (Note: Hypothetical example by someone who sucks at these things – any actual FDL action would be much much cooler).
We could have followed the example of our elected officials: Bow and scrape before the people and organizations with lots of money and be forever at the mercy of the giant cables attached to all that cash. Sure, we’d continue to take contributions from regular folks, but we’d listen to the people writing the big checks. We’d drift to the center or the right, because money always pulls that way in its concentrated form, and most of us would melt away in disgust, to be replaced by Sensible Liberals and Obama diehards.
But instead of following that model and becoming the same kind of corrupt creatures we oppose, we chose a funding model where no one thread is thick enough to bind us, and where those threads reinforce our connections to the FDL community instead of breaking them. Rather than dragging us to the right, they will keep us anchored firmly where we belong, which is with you guys. We’re accountable to firepups, not sugar daddies.

We will assimilate your dollars…. Resistance is futile….
MARGARET!
We are in yer mediaz – screwing with yer agendaz, bitchez!
Btw girlfriend, when I hit the email at lunchtime, my contribution on yer behalf was gently rebuffed as others who care about you had already secured a membership for you.
I’m so proud that you are as cherished by others as I cherish you. No snark, I was a bit verklimpt for a moment. “They love my Peg!”
OT – WikiLeaks nominated for Nobel Peace Prize:
I guess the Nobel Committee is trying to make up for that one it gave to Obama. Some scratches are too deep to fill.
That really is awesome.
eli! very well said dood — i love your explanation — the ties that bind are here in our community keeping us firmly anchored.
suz! Thanks!
I suppose on the right they view their corporate donors in much the same way. I wonder about the Democrats, how many of them started out with some kind of progressive ideals and learned to go along to get along, and how many of them have just been corrupt scam artists from the start.
Always enjoy reading your work Eli.
looking forward to my DFH merit badge.
Thanks, Eli, for reminding us why we are here.
Will the posters be demanding a union? :)
Ya know, I think I may have wound up with two memberships after all. I’m verklempt as well but no longer surprised. The FDL community has been a really great friend to me during my hard times. I have reason to believe I may be closer to gainful employment tonight though.
Thanks for thinking about me too. I’m still verklempt. Talk among yourselves. I’ll give you a topic: Obama is neither a Republican or a Democrat but he’s more useless than both. Discuss.
Who’s writing big checks to FDL & where can we track that on realtime basis, i.e., what is the url for the FDL financial statement of contributors?
Ooo, do tell.
Does it matter when they all end up in the same place?
Only way to find out is to strip money out of polit… bahaha. Damnit, almost made it through that.
joining ASAP. wish I could buy the shirts separately ._.
Reposted from an earlier thread:
Speaking of the job market, out of the blue this morning I got a call from the interview that I thought was really good a couple of weeks ago and I’m getting a second interview. He told me that I was “obviously a huge candidate” and took the time to call me personally, not to schedule the second interview but to make sure I’m going to be around for him to schedule it. Good signs I’d say. Should be Thursday or Friday if he gets the time. Sounded like he didn’t want me making any other plans.
Not really, except maybe to wonder whether our disgust should be leavened with pity. But even so it’s hard for me to feel sorry for them if they have so little spine that they’re not willing to sacrifice their seat for what they believe is right.
I believe public campaign financing is really the single most profound and useful change that could be made to our political system, but it’s going to be a long hard slog before we get there, if we ever do.
woohoo!!! fingers and toes crossed for ya peg
One of the things that makes giving money here different than what happens elsewhere (and which can be explained, ahem, with language not fit for family friendly programming…)can be exemplified by the various public (and secret) efforts (I see you Box turtle)to make sure that everyone who wants (and who other believe should) to be members, ARE. And are taken care of by other members, most of whom only know us all by names, comments and posts, who have never met or spoken to any. The fam wants everyone to move forward TOGETHER. Any ring winger reading here today would have blood and frogs coming out of the ears and other orifices. What? People sticking their hands in their pockets to do something that a)was not identified, for b) someone they don’t know or never met, to c)keep them in the fold along with the rest? What? Impossible! Inconceivable!
Excellent! Fingers and toes crossed!
This is where I’m at. But then again, it’s hard when you have all four branches of government working against you.
FDL has been a source of support to many of us over many years…..and many of us feel that we belong…..and helping support the lake and getting an official card…..well, wow! Fun. And Ryan suggests there are still some sponsorships available for those who have had a bad couple of years…..and boxturtle is running a lottery…..well, it’s all good. Can’t wait to be a card carrying member! And if I ever run across someone wearing one of the t-shirts, I’m sure I will swoon.
I was hoping for a ‘I’m with Blowjob’ button but it doesn’t seem to be on the ‘goodies’ list. :)
I wonder when the media will figure out that when the voters turn out the Republicans en masse it doesn’t mean that everyone loves the Democrats, and vice versa.
The real message is “You all suck, and this is all we can do about it.”
I foresee a lot of this yo-yoing back and forth until someone in DC finally figures it out. Which seems unlikely, to be honest.
Toby, I’m sure we’ll eventually get one of those blowjob buttons……can’t wait to see the test we’ll have to take to qualify! I’m thinking that we’ll have to show-that-we-know the allusion. I’m ready.
I tried to suggest that we should have a “Blowjob Circle” contribution level, but no one seemed to take me seriously…
Excellent! Fingers and toes crossed! Eyes too!! akishgfeigerldnvdfdpf Aw fuck can’t type with the eyes that way…
Best Peg best..
Well, it was either THAT or the men’s briefs with “Gates Likes Manning Naked” printed on the fronts.
And, hey, I can’t find the FDL archives, but wasn’t Christy originally “reddhedd”? I’ve seen folks spell it every which way. That could be another test question.
Yep.
here’s the archives for way back in the fdl blogspot days
The media? You made me lol :) If our future depends on the media we are seriously screwed
On a lighter note I’m looking forward to filling the small space I have left on my arm with a nice bright FDL logo tattoo. Then I can look at every time I start to question whether I am the last sane person left in this country.
ELI!!!
Hi, Dude (*g*)
I don’t have even 45 dollars, which is not that much, really, to join.
Maybe I’ll lurk.
It’s been fun though…I must say.
DEMI!!!
You’re still allowed to comment and write diaries and all that. You are, in fact, encouraged to.
good eve,all
demi…..I, for one, want everyone in the pool/lake. You are one of us. Call Ryan. I hear their are sponsorships available. We’re family. Don’t miss the chance to carry a card!
Eli!!
peeps are buying pups memberships i believe…
Elliott!!
Shame on them. The Blowjob circle is worth multiples of the ordinary contribution. It’s not too late. I haven’t joined yet & would definitely be willing to pay a premium for Blowjob Circle designation.
Don’t even need a shirt or card. Satisfied with erecord.
$69? $690? $6900? $6969?
as an old hobby and talent, that would be a fun badge of courage………..g
hahahahahaha
It seems so. But. I dunno. Feels strange.
you shall be gifted im sure of that
Let me just tell you that you are a sweet lady. Pretty too.
demi @46. ,…. family. That’s the key. I loved margaret’s approach. Soon as she can, she’ll pay it forward. Everyone into the pool/lake! And maybe we can get Suzanne to do a dive for old times’ sake :)
My lips aren’t sealed, but won’t reveal the premium. After all, price finding mechanism & markets must clear.
why thank you,you are definitely a part of the spirit of FDL
Demi, I had an anonymous benefactor buy me a membership today. I know it feels odd. I’m very humbled and grateful but I decided that if I don’t accept the help in the spirit it’s offered, then I’m probably not going to make it. I can eat my pride but it’s not very nutritious. I hope you’ll consider the help that’s being offered. :)
Just means you are appreciated :) Take it as a compliment.
Definitely understand the strange feeling tho. It’s not every day you see this kind of comradery in America anymore… outside of professional sports maybe.
I remember the blogspot days. That takes me back.
we all give in our special ways…thats what makes this place wunnerful
We’ve known each other since 2005 – 6 years. Is that 6 years in internet time like 20 in real time? Heh. Feels like it.
BATTLE SCARS!
tonight is jean harlow nite on TCM….think ill go catch it
good night friends
You pups are the greatest, especially when it comes to comradery. Gonna hit it for today. Ta, all.
Waiting for rafe to show up to buy the whole site for the Kochs.
Well said.
Eli!
eCAHN, you crack me up!
Jane mentioned something about ‘Team Blowjob’ tee’s on an earlier thread…! ;-)
SD!
Has it been six years? Wow, I guess it has.
There was a brief discussion of that very thing on one of the early threads. Mayhaps the swag elves will get the hint.
Night demi.
Two thumbs way, up, Toby!
I’m hoping Rafe is gone. Yesterday I thought we were going to have to rename the place “Rafe Explains it All”…
Heh – people should go see the Boxturtle thread.
You could make a nom like KrisAinCa did (lulz). Turtle man will pick one “scholarship” MsMolly will pick the other. Go!
hmmmmmmmmmmm…:)…..zzzzzzz.:)
Evening Firebagger Miscreants of the Professional Left.
“Inside Job” was released on video today. If you’re in the mood for a reality check…or just to get real pissed off, then I highly recommend it. I would also suggest that you point any friends of the Wingnut persuasion toward the piece. Every little bit, I always say. They don’t have to know that the movie is actually a part of the International Communist Conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids…
Nobel economics & peace prizes are truly injustices of PTB. Including Krugman U.S.-econ-development-occurred along RRS, as well as the 1997 Merton-Scholes travesty.
He’s probably already got the domain tied up… heh
If we could get some young firebrands who’re willing to run honest campaigns at the local level instead of the usual party hacks it wouldn’t take that many election cycles to get ‘em into the House. The Regressives are stuck with a stale playbook. We can do this.
…to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids…
*heh* All mine are sapped and impure already, can I still apply…? ;-)
As I understand the rules, I think that qualifies you to move to the front of the line.
I also believe that the “bench” is our best chance, although I always thought of it in terms of electeds who came up through states with publicly financed campaigns and want to get back to legislating and connecting with their constituents instead of dialing for dollars and kowtowing to corporations all day.
Incoming email SD
Speaking of email, how do email addresses get circulated around this place, anyway? I’ve always wondered about that.
The problem is the money. By the time they get to national level, they are well corrupted by the money and schmoozing after the money.
When we (on the left) raised the $50,000 for Andy’s operation after his insurance gave him a hard time (Andy Stephenson, http://blackboxvoting.com/s9/ ) I knew I really really liked all those folks I had never met :-)
Giving Margaret a years paid pass for the pay wall is in that tradition.
Nice to be with nice folks!
The email addresses I’ve shared with people I’ve posted openly and asked the mods to take down after their receipt. The mods around here are the best, though we don’t always see eye to eye.
100% public financing of campaigns, with jail time for anyone who violates the rules. And none of this two years of campaigning bullshit, either. Three months. Tops.
Funny thing tho…! I still can’t contribute blood to the Red Cross because of my 20 yrs of service to Uncle Sam’s army and I retired in ’05…! Go figure…! *gah*
Copy that.
You know, I went through a bit of the process, as I thought I’d run for a city council district race next year.
Came to the conclusion “No.”
It’s REALLY hard. I hooked up with a guy from the Gill Foundation, and it was brutal. Ultimately, I had to realize at the end of it, I was not qualified. That was an ego bruise, big time. But, it’s reality.
Now, I’m over it, and realize my place in politics is to PUSH and PULL. Be the best influencer I can be. I’m pretty comfortable with that now.
Indeed. And if I land this job, I’m immediately buying someone else a membership. Got my fingers crossed.
Back atcha.
Just to be clear, there is no paywall. Membership gets you additional stuff that you don’t currently have, but is not necessary to maintain your status quo.
Not that I’m trying to talk anyone out of it, I just don’t want anyone to think we’re adding a paywall, because I kinda dislike paywalls…
Those are all good, (and necessary imo), reforms.
kingscott AT or at suckouttamyass DOT or dot com
I’ll pass it on SD. Thanks for your input.
Good thoughts coming your way, Margaret. I really hope you get this job and I expect a complete description of what it is that you do. Best of luck.
I would be managing warehouses in Austin, San Antonio and Del Rio. Oh, and doing some technician duty as well. Vending machines.
Just waitin til tomorrow bc I was hacked yesterday & want to make sure it’s over before I contribute,
Sounds like a busy job with travel.
Just dropping in for a few. I’ll be happy to send up some $ to FDL as soon as I get some.
eChan! You were hacked? OMG!
I was treasurer for a candidate running against Bill Young, twice. I could never deal with those people on a day to day basis. Whole different world. I’m much more comfortable where I can say what I mean and mean what I say.
On edit: “Those people.” politicians, favour seekers, lobbyists, high rollers, etc.
Do you think it was done by your sparring partner? The one that likes to pop in here and show his arse?
Lotsa driving but I would get a car and gas so it’s all good.
Wishing you the absolute best! I started my little job Monday. Didn’t have anything to do today. :-( It’s supposed to rain all day tomorrow so I’ll probably be schlepping in it all day.
rAmen.
I’ll be a much better human just being me instead of an elected. But the experience of talking with just one well meaning politico-flack a-la the Gill Foundation (Tim Gill – Colorado billionaire Gay Liberal) really just blew me away.
While I have admiration for the reps, (it really takes guts) I have double questioning on them now too.
Just a quick note to fdl admins and such. My bank sent me a new cc and I haven’t activated it yet, but my old one has expired. When I get my new one up and running I will renew my recurring contribution.
Question–when I do that will I get the membership stuff, or do I need to make a separate contribution?
Politics is not a pretty business and you definitely have to have certain qualities – or perhaps you have to Lack
certain qualities. Anyway, I’m glad you stayed out.
…suckouttamyass…
Bwhahaha…! ;-)
How about I write you offline and we can sort that all out?
K
I also explored running for city council when I was in Austin where I might have stood a chance but I decided that one has to be a bit of a narcissist to run successfully for office and I’ve never been good at selling myself, hence my ongoing unemployment.
On edit: I am more than a little serious about writing my own name in for president in 2012 though.
Aloha, Big Guy…! You can scrub my comment too…! What a hoot tho…! ;-)
When I was actively involved in campaigns, there were days when I just wanted to scream. It’s so hypocritical.
It was funny. In my past, (10 years ago now) I was a paralegal for Dan Grossman, who was a State Senator here in CO. So I set up meetings for him when session was in, and so forth. I thought I knew how stuff worked.
Turns out NO. An elected managing things is so different to BECOMING elected it’s, well, monstrously different.
Yeah, I got a tiny glimpse of it.
Spot on comment – I used to play with Wall Street investment bank sales types who thought the volatility was the only real key to pricing – besides they just wanted there fee as the buying or selling mutual funds and banks believed their staff when they said this reduced risk and was likely to record a profit (I know – but I could not comment).
Sadly my Chief Investment Officer – who was rich family legacy with connections and no math ability or ability to analyze any company’s financial report – bought every word about Black-Scholes as exact and fair and there was no educating him about tail risk, and gap risk – but he thought he understood volatility risk – and he bought the Streets fake financials for the banks so he would not listen to counter-party credit risk.
And heck – you could do stuff on a spreadsheet – and that impressed, even after 87. And hey – it wasn’t Sharpe Ratio and “efficient portfolios”. I did a bit of research I shared with Bill French a few months before he became head of the NYSE – showed that all the investment math was BS – timing of trades and “efficient portfolios” was nonsense (based on performance from 1930 to 1968) – and that those that invested based on a basic understanding of the business plan and the reported financials were the folks responsible for any beating of the averages that took place. Bill shared it with the CIO – and I was in a new company a year later.
I think that’s a feature for the folks in DC. One of our big problems, after all, is that the fOlks in DC (including the Village) have more in common with each other than the folks they’re supposed to be representing.
Campaign finance reform, and I understand the Brits only allow 6 week of campaigning. Sounds good to me.
I got a question: what happens if someone like Rusty1776 becomes a member? Do his posts still get banned because they upset one of the powers that be over at MyFDL?
Just asking.
What a great justification for how those membership fees are going to be used!
Maybe you folks can help me out. Should I spend $45 to buy a Firedoglakes hat and membership or maybe make up a t-shirt congratulating BP oil for their terrific record of corporate responsibility . . . like every advertisement on this website!!!
Wake up folks, Jane, is hooking you with her self-riteous, leftist BS and then selling out to BP energy.
There’s a hat??!?
