I missed your call (we don’t know each other except here), got your sweet message, but I can’t return the call soon enough b/c I had dental work this afternoon, my tongue is uncontrollable, I slur and drool. The dental work cost only $1323, and since the membership figures are still low in my view, I want to upgrade my membership from entry-level to Benefactor. Please: someone tell me how I can do that.

Please take a look at Jane’s post this morning, and at Blue Texan’s later followup. They both did a really great job explaining why Firedoglake needs this money to remain independent in a rapidly changing media and activist environment.

And, if you sign up as a Benefactor, you’ll have the chance to decline the goodies (as I did) so that your entire donation can go to the website’s groundbreaking work that, really, happens nowhere else anymore. Don’t feel that you were bribed to join up, in case you want ALL your money to be a contribution.

Ever heard/seen a pledge drive for PBS or community radio? Many forego the “premiums” but folks like t-shirts to show they support their station/cause.

What about us 99ers? I’ve been reading FireDogLake since it was just Jane but 3 years into ‘premature retirement’ I’m really hesitant to sign up for any recurring donation of any size. Maybe if our tax refund is decent I can kick in on a one-time basis but for now, food, housing, medical & ACLU are my priorities.

I expected you’d have hundreds of members already.

It’s really hard to get people to sign up for a recurring charge. When I was running my local and asking for union dues of $9.05 per pay period, some of the reactions were like I was asking for a kidney.

And I guess I was in the first 25!

Drat – I was working today and missed this whole thing. And am strapped for another couple days til I get a paycheck, or I’d jump to do it.
Would’ve loved to be in first 100, but I guess that’s a luxury too far for us intermittently-employed types. (It’s better than not-employed-at-all, but makes things like recurrent donations, or any but the smallest, untenable).

I like the idea, though.

Sigh. Pretty soon I guess we’ll have to cough up more for our local public radio stations. For all the irritation I often have with them, it’s still true that they cover issues that no one else does at all. At least around here.

Coverage of issues presupposes the canard about an informed citizenry and their blah blah effect on blah blah. Firedoglake has imagination: its great writers discover issues. Some of them get coverage, most don’t. I hope Firedoglake makes life better for everyone.

I have a lot of faith in the FDL community, and in Jane and those close to her, to make the most of this opportunity. There is so much goodwill and trust that has been developed between the writers, readers, community, organizers, and everyone in between. I think this is a great chance to create a new model for progressive action, community, and a catalyst for change.
