Bradley Manning’s attorney, David Coombs, writes about the true reason Bradley Manning is being stripped each night and forced to report naked each morning in the same way prisoners were tortured at Abu Graib:
On Wednesday March 2, 2011, PFC Manning was told that his Article 138 complaint requesting that he be removed from Maximum custody and Prevention of Injury (POI) Watch had been denied by the Quantico commander, Colonel Daniel J. Choike. Understandably frustrated by this decision after enduring over seven months of unduly harsh confinement conditions, PFC Manning inquired of the Brig operations officer what he needed to do in order to be downgraded from Maximum custody and POI. As even Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell has stated, PFC Manning has been nothing short of “exemplary” as a detainee. Additionally, Brig forensic psychiatrists have consistently maintained that there is no mental health justification for the POI Watch imposed on PFC Manning. In response to PFC Manning’s question, he was told that there was nothing he could do to downgrade his detainee status and that the Brig simply considered him a risk of self-harm. PFC Manning then remarked that the POI restrictions were “absurd” and sarcastically stated that if he wanted to harm himself, he could conceivably do so with the elastic waistband of his underwear or with his flip-flops.
Without consulting any Brig mental health provider, Chief Warrant Officer Denise Barnes used PFC’s Manning’s sarcastic quip as justification to increase the restrictions imposed upon him under the guise of being concerned that PFC Manning was a suicide risk. PFC Manning was not, however, placed under the designation of Suicide Risk Watch. This is because Suicide Risk Watch would have required a Brig mental health provider’s recommendation, which the Brig commander did not have. In response to this specific incident, the Brig psychiatrist assessed PFC Manning as “low risk and requiring only routine outpatient followup [with] no need for … closer clinical observation.” In particular, he indicated that PFC Manning’s statement about the waist band of his underwear was in no way prompted by “a psychiatric condition.”
While the commander needed the Brig psychiatrist’s recommendation to place PFC Manning on Suicide Risk Watch, no such recommendation was needed in order to increase his restrictions under POI Watch. The conditions of POI Watch require only psychiatric input, but ultimately remain the decision of the commander.
Given these circumstances, the decision to strip PFC Manning of his clothing every night for an indefinite period of time is clearly punitive in nature. There is no mental health justification for the decision. There is no basis in logic for this decision. PFC Manning is under 24 hour surveillance, with guards never being more than a few feet away from his cell. PFC Manning is permitted to have his underwear and clothing during the day, with no apparent concern that he will harm himself during this time period. Moreover, if Brig officials were genuinely concerned about PFC Manning using either his underwear or flip-flops to harm himself (despite the recommendation of the Brig’s psychiatrist) they could undoubtedly provide him with clothing that would not, in their view, present a risk of self-harm. Indeed, Brig officials have provided him other items such as tear-resistant blankets and a mattress with a built-in pillow due to their purported concerns.
This is just vile. The former brig commander, James Averhart, violated military rules by putting Manning on suicide watch as punishment, and was subsequently replaced by Denise Barnes. Now she’s stripping him naked to punish him for a sarcastic quip. Who is she, Nurse Ratched? Abusing someone’s mental health classification in order to subject them to torture “for their own good” is sick and sadistic, reminiscent of Soviet gulags.
Maybe she wants to become his “god.”
Let me wholeheartedly concur with Coombs’ smack-down of Brian Villard, who oozes sanctimony as he refuses to answer questions about sexually abusing and humiliating Manning “for his own good”:
The Brig’s treatment of PFC Manning is shameful. It is made even more so by the Brig hiding behind concerns for “[PFC] Manning’s privacy.” There is no justification, and there can be no justification, for treating a detainee in this degrading and humiliating manner.
These people are barbarians. If they gave a shit about Manning’s “good” they’d listen to the brig psychiatrists who have repeatedly said Manning is not at risk of harming himself. There is no question they are abusing his mental health status so they can torture him and not be held accountable for it.
Barack Obama is Commander in Chief. The actions of these sick bastards are his responsibility. Instead of fulfilling his campaign promises to close Guantanamo Bay, he has imported their sadistic tactics to American shores so Bank of America can have something to pin on Julian Assange and WikiLeaks. He has turned his Justice Department into corporate America’s consiglieri.
“For your own good” is now the new “national security.” A way for the government to paint a smiling face on its dripping fangs. And the silence of those who would be howling in outrage had George Bush done the same thing is repellent.

Nurse Ratchit. Good one, Jane.
Jane, it’s time for us to throw our bodies on the gears of this shit. Where do I show up. There’s some call for a mid-March thing at Quantico, no? Let’s have MASSES.
Manning is going to be their shining example of what happens to those who do not follow rules established by their leadership. Same as those GI’s that got spanked over in Iraq, he will be their prime example held out to show what happens. Manning’s entire case, shows who runs the US gov’t and what happens when they say, YOU are guilty. US military runs the nation.
Sound like Denise likes having power over men. And I have no doubt that this action is sexual in nature. Thanks, Jane, for the update on this sick situation and for your anger which comes through loud and clear. What can we do to help Manning?
it’s absolutely horrifying to see that the pentagon is filled with such grotesque people who would have felt comfortably at home trying out experiments at any of the prison hellholes of recent history.
“Barack Obama is Commander in Chief. The actions of these sick bastrds are his responsibility. Instead of fulfilling his campaign promises to close Guantanamo Bay, he has imported their sadistic tactics to American shores so Bank of America can have something to pin on Julian Assange and Wikileaks. He has turned his Justice Department into corporate America’s consiglieri.” DING DING DING DING DING! No more calls, kids, we have a winner!
They are pushing, pushing, pushing, to see what we the people will take. In Wisconsin, at Quantico.
What will we take?
I can’t speak for Manning, but being nude might not have the devastating psychological effects many here are concerned about. The ghost has been known to parade about rock festivals completely nude while most other attendees were in garb, and the jury’s still out as to whether that caused long-term psychological damage.
Posted last night at Marcy’s. I’ll take Sadism for $400, Alex. Whoops, it’s the Daily Double.
I see I was wrong about Chief Barnes’ reluctance to make life as hard as possible for her prisoner, but not about her abusing her authority and failure to fulfill her basic responsibilities regarding the prisoners in her care.
Mr. Manning, she should be reminded, has not yet been convicted of anything but wanting to respect the rule of law by allegedly breaking one rule in order to ensure that much more important ones were observed by superiors who were flouting them.
Even if convicted, his treatment is inhumane if not tortuous, and amounts to inflicting cruel and unusual punishment, a criminal violation by Chief Barnes’, by those following her illegal orders, and by her commanders who have knowingly failed to countermand her illegal orders. The Navy’s JAG officers should already be preparing charges against. Are they?
My gut feeling is regardless the protests, regardless the mail ins and phone calls, they are going to execute Manning for treason in a military kangaroo style court. I really hope I’m wrong, but the military really doesn’t seem to care what Americans think in this case.
It is always real easy for DoD folks to take a sarcastic quip and blow it up
It’s what they do.
Someone somewhere made the comment that the plan was to have a female to throw under the bus if outrage over the atrocities against Manning went viral.
Be stripped of your clothes, in a cage, for any extended period of time, at the hands of god knows what sick assholes, and get back to me.
Robots are not wired to process sarcasm.
Oh it’s all for his own good, haven’t you heard.
He’ll be much better once Barnes douses him with freezing water and sicks the dogs on his genitals. I hear that’s the best thing for people who are at risk of suicide. A brig commander is a much better person to make that determination than some know-nothing psychiatrists.
Get out your enema bag, Denise! Time to make him REALLY well.
Can’t speak for Manning, but I could handle it. I would probably embarrass the guards because I might want to remain au natural 24/7.
protests need to grow large like WI, like Egypt – yes the fascist bullshit continues but its ass is slightly kicked – so then kick it more – what choice do we have, srsly
They can throw her anywhere they like as far as I’m concerned. Women can be just as sadistic as men and, as a woman, I like to see her thrown out of the military.
Good grief.
When is the TSA going to include underwear with an elastic waistband on their list of items that passengers are not allowed to bring on airplanes?
I don’t disagree at all with you. Somehow there needs to be a media somewhere, besides the internet, that can get stories like Mannings into the public. 30 second soundbites every few weeks on the television aren’t going to get mass protests rolling. Somebody has got to get a real television media going. It’s the only thing the masses pay attention to in North America.
We are talking about what they would (and will, if we let them) do to us all.
This shit is not cute or funny.
My support of Bradley Manning has been irritating to some but I just had a major revelation today. Maybe he is responsible for the entire collapse of the Middle East without taxpayer dollars since Wikileaks is being credited with Egypt’s revolution and Manning is charged with giving Wikileaks the documents. He could be the greatest American hero of all time….he sure has a sweet face…
Signed. And thanks Jane for providing the opportunity.
The nudity at issue here is not flashing David Niven at the Oscars. It’s not about a summer frolic with one’s lover in Oliver Barrett IV’s dorm or over le dejeuner sur l’herbe.
The issue here is enforced nudity meant to instill a sense of degradation, shame, submission, vulnerability, and hopelessness. It’s as much a sexual frolic as prison rape.
The military, along with congress has seemed to forget whom they work for and exactly who pays their wages. Again, I say: A US Citizen on American soil! Obama and Gates are criminals!
Denise Barns, as your employer I say this with all due respect.
YOU’RE FIRED!
I agree. Forget trying to change the minds of the people directly involved at Quantico. They are all “true believers”
I think the point the military is most vulnerable is recruiting stations.
Create protests that respectfully inform the potential recruits they could be the next person the military turns on and gives the Manning treatment. Recruiting numbers are easiest to effect, and some of the most “stared-at numbers the military has.
Jane
As a former Army officer, I have been appalled by the abuse of Bradley Manning. This mistreatment violates every precept of the UCMJ as I understand it. Murderers and rapists in the uniformed services aren’t treated this badly.
What I don’t understand is, why hasn’t Manning’s attorney long since filed complaints in federal court to put a stop to this? I have yet to read of any lawsuit filed in Manning’s name. The federal courts certainly have jurisdiction over military matters.
Robert Hoskins
Wyoming
Suggestion for drawing media attention to Manning’s treatment. Now that the weather is improving, organize a nude demonstration outside the gates of Quantico.
Lighten up, friend.
March 20th.. see you at Quantico. we need FDL bottons so we can identify ourselves
Twain, per your point, I was so struck by the women in that Orange County mob hate video the other day .. god women can be the stupidest and evilest, they can outdo men any day .. absolutely ashamed of my gender
All that said, still seems likely this Denise creature is just another military fall girl .. but good because she’s a fucking asshole too
The swift use of “Interpol” to secure Assange, and Ghaddafi is frightening, and this global policing has much to do with Mr. Manning. The US military and government are not the be all end all, but they sure do have a lot of power. This issue is one for all people on the globe. Ghaddafi can go to hell, however there is a precedent set here and that is, that the US needs to back off with their idea that they can arrest anyone they like because someone in the world made them unhappy.
I really hope that Obama really screws this one up,and wakes up the planet. I hope Manning gets out soon, and I want Wikileaks to remain an issue for all world organizations. I for one cannot stomach anymore aggression on good people no matter who the aggressor is or the victim. This Manning issue is much bigger than the US thinks and much more important to all people.
I don’t know. There are probably a lot of things going on behind the scenes that none of us are aware of.
I hear black coffee works really well, and vinegar. Apart from inflicting pain and humiliation as a warning to potential whistleblowers, and in an attempt psychologically to break Mr. Manning, this is an attempt to normalize this behavior. Which means that Sheriff Joe’s and Chief Barnes’ practices will be coming to a civilian jail near You.
When Abu Ghraib broke, we were still capable of collective shame and outrage. That caused politicians to scurry along the skirting board and arrange plausible deniability behind cliches such as “bad apples”. Now, their underlings cynically and without shame simply lie about inflicting inhumane or tortuous treatment and taunt us in the belief that nothing will ever come of it save promotion for them and fewer civil rights and less civil society for us all.
That Bradley can still manage a quip is a really good sign that his mind is still intact. I think we are all worrying about the possibly irreparable damage that his treatment may cause him. I am somewhat hopeful that he is holding out.
On a hopefully not too unrelated topic, can you imagine what the Rethugs would have done to Monica Lewinsky if they had had this opportunity? She stood up pretty well before the Starr Chamber when she was called into testify. I’m sure they would have appreciated a chance to ‘soften her up’ a bit, but the Patriotic Act wasn’t available yet.
These peole are despicable bastards. Has anyone contacted people in Europe on this? I am touching base with one of my friends in high places in France in hopes that it will get some play in Liberation or Le Monde.
Jane, is Manning allowed to have other visitors?
Thanks Jane and if you listen closely to Obama, his favorite word is “responsibility.” Obviously for others, but not him. we have a whole entire progressive veal pen not saying a word about his behavior. If this were Bush, they would be outraged. Really makes you wonder who the democrats and their minions really are.
Take your clothes off before a bunch of sick assholes, friend. Send us photos of you unclothed right now, friend.
(last sentence figurative)
Why is the neo-con shadow government torturing Bradley Manning? It is a lesson to other government-that is taxpayer paid employees. Cover up the wars and corporate fraud or you will be tortured. Of course the chain of command for the torture against Manning has to be kept secret. It does start with Mubarak Obama.
Plus, the secret neo-con overlords who are behind this torture, expect to get a false confession. They successfully used torture to get false confessions for their wars.
But it is a World War by globalist warmongers against Manning and Julian Assange and Wikileaks. “In restricted speech, former MI6 chief credits WikiLeaks with ‘tidal wave’ of revolutions”. But this spymaster ghoul wants revenge against those responsible for truth and accountability.
Excellent question. I suggested to Mr. Coombs that he open source Manning’s defense. I have no experience with military justice, but I can research habeus corpus. I’m not sure you can find a federal judge with the guts to go against the administration. About a year or so ago an American citizen in Guantanamo won in the Supreme Court (5-4)the right to be tried or something. As far as I know he’s still there and nothing has been done to implement the decision. A president who ignores a Supreme Court ruling should be impeached.
Then there’s Kuchinich, the legislator who gets run around. If Congress does not enforce its prerogatives, it will wake up one day to find it has none. We are a lot further along a bad road then we realize, but another online petition should do the trick.
Airport security lines just got a lot longer. To paraphrase Fox Mulder, I hear things contract in the cold, though not, I fear, the macho egos of politicians and irresponsible military and prison officials.
Pardon, but you don’t have any idea what you’re talking about. Psychologically speaking, there is no comparison between something a person chooses and something that is imposed by another, with no time limit or other end in sight.
If they get away with Manning, it is seriously all over for us all.
And let’s not forget the cold. Personally, I can’t even fall asleep when I’m cold, and if I was forced to sleep naked in a (presumably) cold prison cell, I most likely could barely sleep at all. So we’re not just talking nakedness here, but “enhanced” sleep deprivation, itself a form of torture.
As delicious as it is to critique them, I have to keep reminding myself that feeding trolls produces the same result as feeding tribles.
David Swanson yesterday:
Q: Why did Bradley Manning have to stand naked?
A: Not enough of us in there yet to form a pyramid.

Torture/ Murder/ Treason bush’s gift that keeps on growing.
This is a cancer we had beat back into a corner and bush gave it renewed life.
It’s psycosexual gratification to those monitoring the live tv cell feeds and ginning it up.
I would say the president is personally responsible but he’s abdicated that position in defending all the people, in exchange for the Unitary Executive model that gives you corporate approved power to abuse whoever because I AM who calls the shots now.
The cancer is eating this country along with it’s constitution alive.
Yes, he is, if they are approved visitors. David House, Trevor Fitzgibbon and David Coombs visit him regularly.
Jane
I know we all realize something’s wrong, but from a military standpoint there is something truly, truly wrong here. There are no historical circumstances I can think of where the UCMJ has been completely thrown out the window like this. Innocent before proven guilty still applies under the UCMJ. It seems to me that future investigation needs to focus on this point. The chain of command has violated all UCMJ requirements here.
RH
Yeah, the cold affecting the ability to sleep has been my thought of the behind the scenes rationale.
Signed.
I don’t see a chance in hell of Obummer getting another vote out of me. Just watch the collateral murder video for perspective. Are any of those sick assholes responsible for that massacre facing charges?
David House is very impressive when on tv. He has such compassion for Manning.
I have felt like Sisyphus since the 60′s. The outcome is not certain even yet, but we don’t get this boulder over the top it may crush us.
Let me fix this….
It is seriously all over for us all.
There is no difference from bush, vile is the first of derisive words to describe the unspeakable degradation of the soul of our country.
Jane,
Time for a “money bomb” attack ad directed at the commander-in-chief. Let us uninsulate him from the Bradley Manning issue publicly.
Thanks. Was scanning the comments for this thought.
Jane,
for what it’s worth coming from a stranger, you have my immense gratitude for your relentless work in the matter of the ongoing torture of Bradley Manning at the hands of a lawless government. I don’t know what’s more sickening- the torture, the fact that we’re paying for it with our taxes, or the public’s indifference to it. You’re a hero in my book.
Yes, and one of the great things for interrogators is that the body’s physiological responses to cold, including hypothermic reactions, are uncontrollable. No training can stop the body’s reactions or do much to resist its effects. Combined with other techniques, mental breakdown would be inevitable, a matter of time.
What’s left and whether mental health can be recovered is a good question. Since the government plans to keep Mr. Manning locked up for life, or nearly so, it doesn’t much care. Mr. Manning does; his family, friends and supporters do; society ought to.
And to hell with Godwin’s law: these sorts of experiments were why we locked up Nazis after the war, at least those to whom we didn’t make an offer they couldn’t refuse to join our academic think tanks. It was once considered reprehensible practice, involving severe professional repercussions, to cite Nazi experimental data to support even valid conclusions. Now we just duplicate the practices.
Where are all those “support the troops” assholes in Congress? Why can’t we hear their voices raised in outrage about this treatment?
Is Bradley Manning not a “troop” entitled to the rights and protections afforded all in the UCMJ? This is horrifying.
eof @ 9 said,
“If she truly thought Manning was exhibiting suicidal behavior, she would not add to his disorientation and vulnerability through enforced nudity, actions that would most likely push the patient/prisoner further out on the ledge. She could not do so and fulfill her responsibilities.”
Agreed.
If he did hurt himself, because of his treatment, would there be any consequences to her?
I think this won’t help the mental health of those who are having to do this on a daily basis, at least if they have any humanity left. I’m sure that Denise is in her office most of the time.
I sure saw a lot of yellow “Support Our Troops” ribbons (this explains what people said they meant with them) and US flags everywhere when the Iraq war got started. Where are the ribbon and flag wavers now?
Or for that matter, where is the outrage from all those people who have yellow ribbons on their car?
They’ve moved on to gays and woman – back to the future.
the mis-treatment of Bradley Manning is going end a lot of political careers.
the circus act that is the WH, has yet again done something very irrational and stupid.
this sound like a great movie to feature in the summer of 2012. USG tortures USA soldier just for kicks!
I doubt if WikiLeaks leaders fear the clowns in the WH or Bank of America.
Obama really needs someone who tells him what he can do, and what he can not do, because this is going to BLOW UP in his face big time.
Obama torturing a USA soldier is not going to play well any where.
Obama refuses to look in the mirror, and the people around him refuse to tell him the truth, which is OBAMA don’t torture Bradley Manning, because you are UNIQUE, and we think a lot of Americans are not going to like a UNIQUE president torturing a USA soldier.
the only thing we know, is this ends badly for all involve, because OBAMA is the ring leader of this circus.
The simplest step that can be taken to combat the physical and mental numbing cold induces is to exercise. In survival situations, it can be difficult to exercise when space, food, sleep, awareness of surroundings and searching for opportunities for rescue are at a premium.
In a brig, where shelter and food are ordinarily a given, exercise could be routine and prolonged, thus helping to defeat the use of cold as an interrogation weapon. Mr. Manning, however, is prohibited from exercising even during his one hour a day escape from his cell. He is only allowed to walk.
Mr. Manning’s muscles will atrophy. Deprived of the physiological and emotional release derived from exercise, his mental state will atrophy. Combining it with sleep interruption and other stressors would quicken that atrophy. His susceptibility to disease will grow. Lastly, the forced lack of even minimal exercise insures that the use of cold temperatures as a weapon of interrogation won’t be defeated by running, stamping feet, or the kind of office-based calisthenics routinely taught to staff to keep them fit.
There is method in their madness, as well as madness in their methods.
And he and Bill Daley will allow nothing to get between them and Obama’s re-election, certainly not a 140 lb. Pfc. whistleblower.
Please watch, start to finish, the Mar 1, 2011 Session 10 (Public Comment) of the recent PCSBI meeting:

It’s the American (Exceptional) version of the Star Chamber
Arrested = Guilty.
The Star Chamber is the reason why the founders put due process and the prohibition on attainder in the US constitution.
Manning is being publicly punished as a deterrent to others.
This is policy.
Thanks, Jane, for the very sad update and all that you (and others) have done so far on behalf of Private Manning. I just feel an ever deepening sense of despair over this situation, mostly on behalf of Manning (whose life, I fear, will never ever be the same again), but on all of our behalves… this is just beyond the pale. Filled with contemptuous disgust for those responsible, beginning with the Commander in Chief, is putting it very mildly.
My fervant hope is that something will break the log-jamb.
Please put up a link so we are clear about that to which you are pointing. Thank you in advance!
On edit: Thanks! You read my mind …
Abso-effen-lutely! The scapegoat as a lesson to the rest of the serfs.
Not to put too fine a point on it, the conditions of Mr. Manning’s detention ARE methods of interrogation, even though no questions are asked or answered. That comes later.
Bill Daley can’t even save OBAMA
$4.00 gas enough said
Obama only hope of winning in 2012 is TAINTED DIEBOLD voting machines
so much for a recovery?
According to newly released numbers, over 44 million Americans are now on food stamps. That is a new all-time record and that number is 13.1% higher than it was just one year ago. So how many Americans have to go on food stamps before we can all finally agree that the U.S. economy is dying? 50 million? 60 million? All of us? The food stamp program is the modern equivalent of the old bread lines.
Might be time to re-read 1984. Maybe there’s been too much exposure to Two Minute Hates…
Remember when the military’s argument against torturing other countries’ military members was that our own troops would be tortured in return?
I guess Obama’s got that part covered.
I would assume the ghost was in control of when and in what conditions the ghost was fully nude. Just sayin’.
In other words, it’s a slow form of murder.
I can’t stand this. Thank you for all your work on Bradley’s behalf, Jane.
The head of Social Security has also admitted that the reason for the high enrollments in SS is because of the economy.
That is how the Obama admin works. The way they get legislation passed and then defended by Democrats is that they find a single issue and then try and bury all the negatives in the bill…and if you don’t go along then you’re evil for hurting such and such group. Amongst the areas we’ve seen this was on the health insurance reform and on extending the Bush tax cuts.
I signed the petition, but it seems like we need to be taking some sort of legal action against the brig commandant and everyone above her in the chain of command, up to the Commander In Chief.
Torture is illegal; Manning is being tortured; the whole world knows it; no one in the chain of command is stopping it; therefore, Obama, Gates, Mullen, Amos, Barnes, and everyone between Amos & Barnes are all guilty of torture, which is a crime against humanity, and a much more serious offence than leaking embarrassing diplomatic cables.
Wasn’t it just last year they cut funding for the food stamp program to use the money to extend unemployment?
What is happening to PFC Manning has more to do with making sure others who have access to the files he did understand there are two kinds of justice in this country: what we have written down and codified into law and the unwritten, real way punishment is meted out. They are getting message, even as the American people are not.
Bradley is a hero in my book.
And will come through this much stronger
than the vindictive, criminal fucks that imprison
him can a imagine.
Cross-posted – along with petition request – at Progressive Alaska.
Thanks, Jane.
I agree. What is needed are mass protests and publicity. I also believe we need to ask our “representatives” in Congress their opinion. Not only their opinion of torture, but also their opinion of the drone strikes and the special forces nightly attacks. All this killing and cruelty in our name.
We should not forget we have the right to recall any elected official. It is disgraceful that only Dennis Kucinich is speaking up. (Ron Paul spoke up about Wikileaks, but I am not sure if he spoke about Manning.)
Any discussion about Bradley Manning necessarily includes the nature of the things he has been accused of releasing–serious and horrible crimes by the US government, and, the total non-response to any of these crimes at any level of law enforcement. It appears they intend to kill him and they have already done him irreparable harm–why wouldn’t a group capable of all these other crimes also torture an innocent until proven guilty US soldier because after all he is thier true enemy and not the made and made up characters in their silly wars on drugs, terror and now underwear.
That their excuse making for the torture of Manning is so transparent as to be insulting to all of us no matter how we feel about Manning’s actions. His own safety please; McGiver and Houdini working together couldn’t commit suicide under those circumstances.
Hey gang, head over to WikiLeak’s Twitter site – the Egyptian people have broken open the building where the secret police were HQed and are grabbing documents to share with the world.
Among the stuff already revealed: Not only did the US rendition people to Egypt for torturing, so did Sweden in collaboration with US. In other words, Assange is right to fear extradition.
I have a different, more optimistic, take on these events and what they say about Manning’s mental state — how he’s holding up — and his relationship with his jailers. One way to look at the situation is to notice that Manning is now dictating the conditions of his confinement. He’s able to raise the pot by describing ways he could defeat the POI watch, forcing the military to respond in ways that, while not particularly hard on him, are embarrassing to them, e.g., making him sleep naked so that he can’t strangle himself under the covers with his own underwear. What I think that shows is how important it is for the military to deliver him to trial unharmed. They can’t take him off of POI, because they need a record — in the event something happens — that will prove he wasn’t injured in some mysterious and unexplainable way — that nobody “got to him.” I’m sure the military would like to think they are showing him what he gets for mouthing off, but I think they are acting out of fear. He, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to be afraid of them at all.
Swear. To. God.
Jane Hamsher is the ONLY blogger in the whole damn ‘networld who’s willing to take off the gloves and cut the bullshit.
Thanks PW!!! That is incredible!
a crying shame
“Obama’s only hope of winning in 2012 is TAINTED DIEBOLD voting machines.”
Spot on, Jedi…
And now that he’s shit the bed for HIS 55 gallon drum’s worth, on top of Bush’s deposit, I want to hear some of the people sticking with him, tell us how he’s going to UN-shit it in time for 2012.
UCMJ…
Ultimate Catastrophe in Modern Jurisprudence…
Barry!!!! What is wrong with you!!!!????? Who are you???
Talk about being in the crosshairs…Wow!
What is the link to the Twitter site?
The repellent silence of those responsible authorities, who hold public offices of privilege and power, has been made easy and painless, because they’ve been left undisturbed about the matter by our national media, even where they’re the direct authorizers and overseers of the Department of Defense and “detainee affairs and policy”:
Upcoming Hearings:

Ranking Member: Adam Smith, Washington

Thank you so much!
Quite frankly, I think the problem isn’t with the UCMJ but 1) with Manning’s defense attorney and 2) with the military cowards who are abusing Manning in violation of the UCMJ.
RH
I think we’ve been missing the boat. Instead of protesting at Quantico or DC, we should be protesting — en masse, for as long as it takes — outside the offices of CBS, NBC, ABC, and CNN. I mean street clogging, lobby-filling Madison-type protests over the lack of news coverage of Manning’s situation. Make Brian Williams and Katie Couric and so forth run a gauntlet of protestors mocking them for their lack of journalism.
Scary.
I could be wrong, but it was my understanding that Manning has no “covers” on his bed, that his temperature is controlled only by the temperature of his cell.
If one Googles “Quantico Marine Base Brig”, a link will appear for all the phone ### associated w/said brig, including that of the commandant, one Chief Warrant Officer Denise Barnes. That number, which anyone can call and DEMAND that she release Bradley Manning out of solitary confinement, is:
1-703-784-6870. It would just be a shame if Chief Barnes got so many calls she had to change the number…..muah-ha-ha-ha
I don’t know. Whatever the conditions in his cell are, they’re being documented by the POI cams, so we’ll find out soon enough. But if that’s true, he’s just making the jailers look even more ridiculous by saying he could kill himself — using his underwear — in plain sight, so that they have to take his underwear away. Meanwhile, he’s giving us plenty of ammunition to use against his jailers. What a great headline!
Signed the petition. Thanks for hosting it.
It’s hard to think of this as anything other than treatment that is sanctioned, if not encouraged, by higher ups. The President and SecDef certainly know about it by now, even if they didn’t before. They haven’t done anything to change it. That says volumes.
That truly seems to be the goal of this current exercise in abuse of power, using James Averhart’s replacement Denise Barnes to do what Averhart was not able to do.
Pentagon Press Secretary Morrell tried to assert this very power during the DOD briefing on Jan 26, 2011 but well-informed NBC reporter Jim Miklaszewski’s following questions ruined, temporarily, the unveiling of the “Unitary Brig Commander” power assertion.
[my bold and italics]
Someone no doubt “reminded” new brig commander Denise Barnes that her judgment must be publicly and willfully counter to advice that she receives in order to show everyone, especially the media, that her decision is ULTIMATE. She certainly learned the lines like a good understudy would.
After making a comment at the blog of Bradley Manning’s civilian lawyer – http://bit.ly/hCv6IM – I wanted to know what CWO Denise Barnes looks like and be able to direct others to a photograph to enable negative Social Preferencing of her for her orders to continue and even increase the severity of detention for Bradley Manning, who has not been convicted of a crime and is not deemed by any psychiatrist to be a suicide risk. So I did some Internet searching.
I suspect that the photo accompanying the announcement at Marine Corps Base Quantico website of the “Pre-Trial Confinement Facility” commanding officer change has changed in the last several weeks. It currently is only an emblem of the base but the verbiage below is:
http://www.quantico.usmc.mil/Sentry/StoryView.aspx?SID=4883
However there is at least one photo of Brig Commander CWO Denise Barnes on the Internet – http://ptoday.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html search on her name. Near the bottom of this page is a photo banner for a birthday/welcome home celebration in 2009 at her Hillside Avenue Plainfield NJ family home.
This information will now enable those who disapprove of the treatment of Bradley Manning to withdraw voluntary association with this particular giver of inhumane orders. Next would be shaming and shunning of the enforcers of her orders, if they do not cease being government enforcers entirely.
Beyond signing the petition above (which I have already done) and publicly condemning “the silence of those who would be howling in outrage had George Bush done the same thing”, I urge all who have any type of contact with CWO Denise Barnes and those who carry out her orders to withdraw all voluntary association with them.
Even street protests are not enough, as I’ve tweeted considerably, nor even silent standing backwards at speeches by politicians (done by Ray McGovern in front of Hillery Clinton) and as I wrote in general in “Tax/Regulation Protests are Not Enough: Relationship of Self-Responsibility and Social Order” – http://selfsip.org/focus/protestsnotenough.html
Making it personally uncomfortable to continue to be an issuer of and especially an enforcer of inhumane orders is what is needed. Shunning/ostracism is a very effective long used nonviolent method for social change (as pointed out by Gene Sharp in his works on nonviolent social change). To continue voluntary association with such government order givers and government enforcers is hypocritical of anyone who is opposed to these actions.
Well, as an ex-jarhead, I was subject to it for a few years. Not my “legal” cup of tea. :o)
The civilian side of the government doesn’t seem to care what Americans think, either.
As a former DOJ employee who felt ashamed during the Bush years, I’m really, really sad and ashamed to see my former employer behaving in such a craven manner.

Bradley is screwed, we are all screwed. Peoples’ rights are disappearing before our eyes. Torture on our shores from a president that promised to end torture and be transparent. Obama serves the same exact people as Bush and Cheney. His campaign promise of change was the biggest lie ever perpetuated against a nation. Yeah things are changing all right. Our country is being changed into a Heritage Foundation Wet Dream.
jane hampsher writes:
“barack obama is commander-in-chief. the actions of these vile bastards is his responsibility.”
and so he is, and so it is.
and so it quite evidently has been from the beginning of manning’s torture thru sleep deprivation and enforced isolation from other humans (well, there are the guards).
president obama’s comment to “progressives” has been, from the beginning, “make me do it”.
on the issue of manning’s clearly mandated torture,
and on the issue of the dod’s clearly felt necessity to lie repeatedly to the american people
about the “neccesity” of manning’s torture (to protect him from himself),
it is about time manning’s supporters “made obama do it” by holding him publicly responsible for manning’s mistreatment at the hands of the u.s. dod.
I think there’s something everyone here is missing…Manning communicated, regardless of tone, the fact that he had considered ways to kill himself. For someone who is already under a prevention of injury order, that probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do for someone who wants to be taken off of POI.
I’ve already stated that I am an officer in the Marine Corps with friends that work in military corrections. Sarcasm and “joking” threats are not treated as a “quip.” A brig is an extrememly regimented environment guided by strict rules and regulations. If Manning were to kill himself with his underwear, people would call for the head of the brig commander. It seems to me that this is a lose-lose situation for CWO2 Barnes. If she takes his sarcasm seriously, she’s “overreacting” and is “a sadist.” If she doesn’t take his sarcam seriously and he chokes himself with his underwear, she’s “irresponsible and should have taken precautionary measures.”
I highly doubt very many people in here have ever been in a position where you are responsible for every step, breath, meal, shower, etc. for another adult. As someone who has led Marines in situations most of you can’t imagine, I can tell you that the right decision isn’t always the popular one.
Being tortured in whatever terible way still does not change the truth. And the truth is you have two people in the relationship, the victim and the sicko torturer. Unfortunately that smelly stain rubs off on Obama.
Gitsum
I’m a former Army Special Forces officer, commanded two A-teams, have been on missions in Africa and the Middle East, and have worked with Marines and generally like them because of their superior tactical proficiency. So I can imagine.
Bradley Manning’s abuse does not reflect well upon the Marine Corps. It seems to me your attempt to defend the actions of the Brig Commander with a hypothetical “Manning is a suicide risk” begs the question is there any proof? I know the rules too and you need a whole lot more than a jackbooted response to a soldier’s sarcasm or complaints about ill-treatment–in this case, severe ill-treatment. You need a formal psychological assessment, which doesn’t appear to have been done. Also under the UCMJ you have to afford an accused realistic–not kangaroo court–rights of appeal, which also have been denied to him.
As a military professional who has commanded troops I find the notion that Bradley Manning is going to commit suicide with his underwear waistband to be ludicrous. It is also my professional opinion that his abuse is despicable and deliberate, with the orders for such mistreatment to have come down from on high–really high. That doesn’t mean these continued violations of the UCMJ and the United States Constitution is moral or legal.
I suggest you remove your head from your fourth point of contact and think this through.

So as a former Army officer, you have no doubt had to take precautions that others may perceive to be unnecessary. Having served, I’m sure you’re also aware of the requirements during in-processing at the brig, methodical record keeping, and the fact that all records of a detainee’s stay are turned over once the case goes to trial. All of this will come out in the wash.
You’re “hypothetical suicide watch” line makes little sense. Manning has been under wither POI or suicide watch since he got to Quantico, as reported by most MSM. Do you really think that type of classification would stand if not warranted?
I also would think that toilet paper is not worthy of being considered a weapon, but a friend told me about an incident where an inmate swallowed toilet paper in the middle of the night, causing himself to suffocate. If a person is commited to ending his/her life, he/she will find a way to use what is available to do the job.
I’m sure, as a former special operator, you’ve got a few stories of ingenuity.
If it’s true that “ingenuity” will always carry the day if someone is determined to commit suicide, then what is the ultimate purpose of depriving an allegedly suicidal prisoner of his/her clothing? To help that prisoner develop his/her “ingenuity”? Wouldn’t the mental stress caused by forced nudity contribute to an increase in suicidal intentions? Seems to me that forced nudity would be more likely to push a person to suicide than prevent it.
A Google search on suicides by swallowing paper yielded only a few cases and none of the victims were under constant surveillance. If the purpose of depriving Manning of his clothing is to make suicide more difficult but not impossible, why not at least allow him paper gowns like those provided in physicians’ offices? It’s pretty hard to hang yourself with paper while constantly being watched.
Paper gowns are a pretty good idea, but the problem remains the same…with the lights out at night (which is when his clothing is removed), where visibility is limited (only the corridor lights are on), a detainee intent on suicide can swallow paper until he suffocates. Taps (lights out) is when most brig suicides occur, again from friends in military corrections.
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t for CWO2 Barnes.
Gee, thanks for dropping by, CWO-4 James Averhart. Run along now. Obviously you have not been following this story for very long at FDL, otherwise you would realize the potential for Manning’s committing suicide was de-bunked here months ago.
Remember this Denise Barnes. She is a witch and practices sadism of a sexually perverse adherent. She must have her name kept in front of the public until she is either institutionally committed for her own good and the good of the people she is supposed to be managing or she is stripped of her duties and shiped to a more receptive area for her form of perversion such as the Afghan, Pakistan border for instance. I understand naked boys are a cultural matter over there. Whatever you do with her get her away from decent people like her charges such as Cpl. Manning who has not been found guilty of anything in case you didn’t know that.
Thanks for the update pastfedup!! I wasn’t aware that you and yours were the resident experts when it comes to assessing suicide risk of someone behind bars in a military brig. If you were to get your news at some site other than FDL, Salon and Huffington Post, you would realize Manning’s status as a POTENTIAL suicide risk is still in place. But that would require you to step away from your self-licking ice-cream cone.
Here’s the real problem…it’s taking too long to get Manning to trial. You can thank his lawyer for that. He’s the one that requested a delay. Again, that’s in the news. I’m willing to bet there isn’t a person on the planet that wants Manning tried more than CWO2 Barnes. Until then, she’s the one who has to make the unpopular decisions, like taking the necessary steps to keep Manning alive.
One question for you…how would you frame your response to hearing Manning died in custody? Let me guess…”Manning was taken out by Obama and his goons.” I’m also willing to bet that no amount of forensic evidence, accompanied by an underwear band wrapped around his neck with a suicide note in his hand, would convince you otherwise.

Maybe they can hold Manning’s trial the same day as Barnes’s libel action against Hamsher. Sexual Sadist, eh? I realize you sleep well at night on the bed of money (brought to you each time we link over to your BP energy advertisement), but the story of Manning being stripped wasn’t enough . . . you just had to throw in some wholly-unsupported sexual reference.
Folks, you want conspiracy and dark shadows, when is that last time you saw your “Jane” post an article being critical BP oil. Yet one-stop shopping, you can both donate to firedoglake to help stop the drilling or donate to firedoglake by support BP’s bs message of corporate responsibility.
And yes, she has absolute control over who advertises on her site. When was the last time anti-defamation league site was advertising the Clan?
Both Hamsher and hypocrite start with “h” . . . crazy, leftist, conspiracy-nuts, discuss.
