Mike Huckabee’s explanation that he “misspoke” about President Obama’s imaginary childhood in Kenya isn’t going to fly. Here’s the key passage:
If you think about it, his perspective as growing up in Kenya with a Kenyan father and grandfather, their view of the Mau Mau Revolution in Kenya is very different than ours because he probably grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather.
So does Huckabee think there was a Mau Mau Revolution in Indonesia? Look, it’s clear he was simply parroting D’Souza’s completely batshit thesis, which was hailed by Newt Gingrich and promoted approvingly by Forbes.
And there’s the problem for Huckabee and every other Republican contender in 2012: this Obama/Mau Mau talk is perfectly mainstream in right-wing circles, and fruitloops everywhere else. Ditto death panels, the socialist conspiracy behind climate change, and the looming threat of Sharia law being imposed in the US.
And Huckabee, like any Republican who wins the nomination, is going to have to wink convincingly at the 51% of Republicans who are birthers — while simultaneously distancing himself from the crazy.
That’s a delicate balancing act, indeed — and “misspoke” ain’t gonna cut it.

About Firedoglake
Hiya,
How about Sharia law taking over the U.S.
That’s some serious tap-dancing. Hell, with a routine that fancy he might even qualify for “The Amateur Hour.”
I’d love to see him on Dancing With The Stars.
As a matter of fact my friend Seamus O’Hara grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather. Just sayin’. Of course Seamus is of a light complexion so it’s okay.
He and Michelle Malkin could bust a move together…
For that match-up I just might go to a friend’s house and force him to turn the show on.
He is not gonna be able to walk that one back. Too bad, only the crazy will follow him on the campaign trail.
As long as pot is legal under that system, it works for me!
Yeah, some pretty scary shit, alright…
**********
Just found your 707 comment on the previous post. heh…
We are going to hear all kinds of crap like this in the coming year. The repugs and McConell intend to do everything possible to make sure Obama is a one termer.
Oh, how I wish there was a true Progressive to primary Obama!
You mean republicans will vote for him?
Gat not pot.
As most of us did…
How about this dude?
And if anyone missed the post by Selise, I recommend it. Good stuff.
You said a mouthful.
LOL! Sorry, I went back down to see if the troll answered. He did. He said they were there sleeping. I guess they were talking in their sleep and said that stuff.
Sheesh.
Oh yeah, crazy republicans will vote for him. The Huckster, preacher gone bad.
Yes indeed they were and, sad to say, my grandfather was one of them.
Which one? Been playin’ whack-a-troll.
Stop being so redundant. It makes me dizzy.
Well, he may just get mad enough and run.
There’s an app for that™
Sorry. I’ve already started on the drink today. Got a tweet about listeria in meat and chicken again.
Huckster-bee: Hope-lessly unscrupulous from Arkansas …
“The dark side of Mike Huckabee” (Salon.Com, by Max Brantley, Nov. 13, 2007)
Can you say vegetarian?
This gives pause for concern:
“he probably grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather.”
Well, in fact that’s what the British did in Africa, and elsewhere. Does Brother Huck not know this, or the simple fact that part of US post WW2 strategy was the dismantlement of the British Empire?
Also, watched Cohen on the floor this morning talking about how much money is wasted on Food Safety as I was reading that tweet. I had no socks nearby to throw at him.
Gawd. I saw a story this morning about 500 Rx drugs being pulled from the market … because they haven’t been approved yet.
All that pesky regulation sure makes it hard to turn a 700% profit, eh food and drug industry?
Too bad he isn’t hanging out around trailer parks like the more conventional preachers, like Jimmy Swaggart.
I love the sideways photo.
Or that the American Revolution was fought against the British Empire?
Beja, Veja. Betchatariun!
They prolly party together at the big preacher conventions. :-D
Back in 2007, the other side was saying the same thing about the other side. Here comes the new prediction, just like the old prediction.
These people are so ignorant and parochial in their grasp that there is no place to start to inform them. And the news media presents them as serious people. And they get elected by average Americans who have little more knowledge or depth. That’s what happens when you teach kids to the test and just to get a job.
LOL
It has already been refuted a zillion times! Where were you?
Back to work.
Namaste
Huck has a nice comfortable lead among southern voters in a recent poll. That does not prove he will be a force outside the south. I don’t see Huck or Barbour having a chance.
Obama brought the Republican Party back from the grave. But he cannot bring it back to life. The horrid undead Republicans say Obama is a Kenyan, a Muslim and a Socialist. All lies but I wish it were true. In truth, Obama is a Fascist, a war criminal and a two faced lying sack of shit. Some are gleeful it seems that the Republicans have nobody to oppose Obama. Not me.
Have a good one, Weeble! Uh, SouthernDragon. :-)
Mr. Huckabee might not be open about it, but he appeals to people who aren’t fully, if at all, comfortable with the notion of racial equality.
It’s a measure of how completely cowed the MSM is that they don’t categorically refute this kind of craziness.
Huckabee, D’Souza, et al have created an alternate universe.
Was there a “Truther Caucus” in the Democratic House? How many elected Democrats were Truthers or had Truther sympathies? Can you name 5? Did elected Democrats introduce legislation that suggested Bush/Cheney were behind the 9/11 attacks? What percentage of Democratic voters were Truthers? How many popular left-leaning political pundits were Truthers?
(And by “Truther” — I mean, “George W. Bush and Dick Cheney deliberately conspired to blow up the WTC” NOT — “George W. Bush knew about the WTC attacks in advance.”)
If you don’t have good answers to these questions, I’m afraid your equivalence is more than a little false.
Yep. I wish somebody would challenge the media to facts and truth for one full year.
#FAIL: “FDA Has Only 2 Inspectors Watching Drug Factories in China” (BNet.Com, by Jim Edwards, Dec. 4, 2009).
So I have to ask, ‘How’s that “globalization” working out for you, America?’
SEE! I’m telling ya. I was hot as Fourth of July in Florida this morning. Cohen on the floor speechifying about shit he has no idea about. At the same time I was catching the tweet about the food recalls.
That would be #49.
Nice touch, alright…
{ OT/Sidebar Conversation– Are you speaking of Representative Stephen Ira ‘Steve’ Cohen (D-TN) who’s up for re-election in 2012? }
OT:
Official Complaint to Missouri Bar, re: Clarence Thomas
http://my.firedoglake.com/rogershuler/2011/03/02/clarence-thomas-faces-call-for-his-disbarment/
Got a pic? I think it was him. But to make sure I need to see his face.
Supremes stand up for Westboro Baptists. Innocent torture victims, not so much,
Fair response, but you confuse my equivalency.
I’m not comparing truthers to birthers especially prominent ones.
I’m comparing predictors to predictors.
Sure sounds like the same rhetoric.
{ OT/Sidebar Conversation– Yeah there’s a picture up related to the link I gave and other interesting historical info related to that individual’s previous positions with respect to the FDA. Click around in the database … }
I don’t think the Republicans are going to run anybody this year unless JEB decides to make the plunge. The need to appeal to the T-Party means they have to strew delicious sound bites for the Democrats to use in the General election. They need some one from entirely outside the ring. Their best hope is a hung convention, and a last-minute backroom deal. Petraeus would be the inside candidate, except that he is saddled with the Afghanistan fiasco and has no doubt given hostages to Obama’s fortune along the way.
They are in a really tough spot, because nobody who might have a chance in 2016 is going to want to ruin it by losing in 2012. The only way they get a viable candidate is if the unemployment rate rises and Obama’s polls plummet. Otherwise, the field is open for the crazies. Go Newt!
OT– So what happens to the “Free Speech Zones“? It would also be interesting to know if Westboro is involved in or receiving funding from the The White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships (FBNP) …
Favorite sons are a better option.
Do you see Jeb emerging if there is a hung convention? I’ve been inclined to think that for awhile. By remaining below the radar, he’ll be a relatively “fresh face” at the convention.
You back again? Isn’t time to change your diaper?
Are you referring to the same JEB whose daddy was such a great fundraiser for Richard Nixon in 1959?
I’ve got no better guess than you. Of the candidates, he is the only one who could absorb a loss in 2012 and come back to win in 2016. It’s a risky play, but the big money is surely all behind him if he wants to make it. He puts Florida and Ohio in play, and that may be all it takes in a close election in which the Corps have unlimited spending power to drown out Obama on the airwaves.
That is not him. I guess I made a mistake. :-( I’ll have to review Cspan from this morning and see which one it was. Please disregard my comments referring to Cohen.
mzchief, thanks for that. I needed the correction and am big enough to accept it. Sorry for any undue scrambling.
Good question. If the Westboro Baptists can protest wherever they want, why can’t everyone else?
This decision might have a silver lining.
Frankly, I’m heartsick that there isn’t a real Democrat to run for President.
It is slowly emerging what a huge slimeball Gerald Ford was.
The only way he can pull that off is if the national media utterly lays down for him the way they did for Reverse Ace McCain. Though considering their burying of the biggest scandal in his closet, that of Wayne DuMond, this is not at all unlikely.
It’s my understanding that Obama was mostly raised by his white American-citizen grandparents, so I doubt that he heard all that much about the Mau Mau revolution, or even British imperialism. But to repeat what’s already been said by other comments, this little Hucksterism is rather jaw-dropping… I didn’t think I could be amazed by these rightwing liars, but there ya go, I am!
What? Is the Huckster now all in bed with Queen Elizabeth & Prince Charles or…???? HUH??? Or is the Huckster somehow trying to deny that imperialism, you know, happens???
Amazing… the moranic duh factor is jaw-droppinly dumb.
Plus: the Huckster is a LIAR.
I thought the same thing. Would be good. Imagine lefties being able to speak!
My bet is still on JEB, but time will tell. But when you see the dumbfounding idiotude of the rest of the bunch, then only JEB begins to look, uh,… gah… I dunno? Able? Whoa… so sad, so pathetic, so horrible. And yes, I, too, sorely wish the Democrats could stop being Vichyrats and produce a decent, progressive candidate who will truly represent the will of the people, but…
Well, they probably will — but birtherism and teabaggery were just in their infancy back then. William Ayers and Rev. Wright were the best they could come up with.
A Kenyan, anti-colonial (read: white European) worldview is a whole ‘nother level.
The big thing with Jeb is that he’s monumentally corrupt, he and Columba. That’s why they couldn’t run him in 2000, even though they desperately wanted to as he’s marginally smarter than his older brother. So they wound up spending hundreds of millions, still lost to Gore in the popular vote, and had to rig and steal Florida in order to “win”.
So that is where Clinton’s black baby came from! The man Huck sent free after raping Clinton’s cousin and then went on to kill.
Why, you looking for a snack?
Heh, you bring out the highbrow in me.
Wasn’t Jeb one of the key players in the Savings and Loan failure?
Yes, I’m aware of that, but in this day and age of IOKIYAR, as Dick Cheney would say: SO??!!??
Do you think that’ll really make a difference anymore (serious question)?
There now is a supreme court precedent allowing free assembly. It will be interesting to see if anyone tries to selectively apply it.
You are correct sir.
Whew! I hate to make two huge mistakes in one day. :-D
I think that was resolved as soon as he pardoned Nixon…
From Cspan.org
Gates is telling Congress how much he needs in the budget but does not include the two war expenses.
Uh, uh, uh, not so fast! I believe I heard that the court said local gov’t could restrict where their type of demonstrations can take place.
Neil was the high profile “ethically challenged” Bush, but it appears they all had an S&L that was looted in their past.
David Dayen has a fresh post up: Tea Party Republicans Get Ready to Disappoint Tea Party
The decision will certainly be studied in detail. The point is, it cannot be selectively applied. What’s good for Westboro Baptists holds for everyone else.
Voters turned him away in 1976 out of digust for his pardon of Nixon. It was not known at the time how deeply involved Ford was in the JFK murder.
I don’t have a link, but what I remember from the time is Jeb’s real-estate scammery, as traditional in FL as you can get:
Jeb buys an office building for 1 mil (its actual worth). Sells it to his partner for 3 mil. Buys it back for 5 mil. Sells it back for 8 mil. Buys it back for 12 mil. Sells it back for 15 mil. Partner goes to bank, borrows 15 mil with building as collateral. Splits $ with Jeb, 7.5 mil apiece. Defaults on loan, bank seizes building worth….1 mil.
And that is how Jeb made his money in FL real estate, as I recall.
IOKYAR. Jeb can survive any scandal he has participated in.
I thought Obama put those expenses (Iraq and Afghan) back on the budget. So now they’re off again?

Pretty sure the Corporate Clowns, and filthy rich, will be quite happy having Obama re-elected in 2012. That will give them time to groom Chelsea Clinton, and one of the Bush girls, as well as Megan McCain. Hey, if you are going to have all the exact same idiots in your administration, regardless D or R, you might as well make the head puppet race entertaining!!
Agreed. He survived this, as well as pardoning at least one terrorist while Governor. He would be a formidable candidate and campaigner.
Yep, sure is different. Because down in Arkansas, our view is that of our slaves rising up and killing the masters.
Talk about a dog-whistle. And the British actually WERE thick headed racists who oppressed and exploited Africa (and India) to steal resources for their Empire, so Grandpa Obama’s view of the situation was more true and accurate than Mr. Huckabee’s white fantasy.
This wasn’t a “mistake” in any way shape or form. It was deliberate.
“It is often assumed that in a conflict there are two sides in opposition to one another, and that a person who is not actively committed to one side must be supporting the other. During the course of a conflict, leaders on both sides will use this argument to gain active support from the “crowd”. In reality, conflicts involving more than two persons usually have more than two sides, and if a resistance movement is to be successful, propaganda and politicization are essential.

No. Certainly not “key.”
Which terrorist did he pardon as Governor?
Therein lies the problem, I’m afraid. By any standard I’d care to use, Huckabee is an ignoramus. Yet, put far too many American adults next to him, and he looks like a genius. He shouldn’t get away with this nonsense, but I think there’s a pretty good chance he will.
George W. Bush was elected Governor of TX in 1994. Jeb Bush ran for Gov of FL in 1994 and lost to Lawton Chiles. Jeb Bush was elected Governor in 1998, reelected in 2002. Gov was his 1st political office. George W. Bush announced his candidacy in June 1999.
Yeah, Mike’s walking a tightrope between the “moderate” republicans and the out-and-out loons. Once you enlist in team Flat Earth, it’s like the mob; you can’t resign your commission. :o)
I’d add, watching he and Palin compete for the snake-twirler vote is going to be good fun.
