Late Night: Pouting Baby Doesn’t Understand Why Little Melting Jeff Won’t Let GE Pay Taxes |
| By: Jim White Thursday March 31, 2011 8:00 pm |
I don’t understand why Little Melting Jeff is so mean to our government. His company made $14 billion last year, but they won’t give any of that money to the government. Companies like Little Melting Jeff’s are a big reason why our government doesn’t have enough money.
Administration Denies Acceptance of EPA Riders into Continuing Resolution |
| By: David Dayen Thursday March 31, 2011 7:15 pm |
There was a disturbing report that the Obama Administration might allow policy riders into the continuing resolution for the 2011 budget that would attack clean water and clean air regulations from the EPA. The White House now says that’s not the case.

Foreclosure Fraud Settlement Talks Begin as More Revelations Emerge |
| By: David Dayen Thursday March 31, 2011 5:45 pm |
Negotiators with the proposed mortgage servicer settlement sat down with leaders of the biggest banks for the first time. The state Attorneys General and federal regulators set out their position with a 27-page term sheet; the banks responded days before the talks with their own offer. It included two of the major policy changes in the AG term sheet. But it did not include any of the monetary penalties for commissions of fraud and abuse, and the third-party overseer it recommended could potentially be a way to get the unending foreclosure cases being fought by attorneys with clear knowledge of the fraud out of the hands of the courts. So this is a proposal from the banks to essentially do the job of servicing that’s within the bounds of the law, with no consequences for past lawbreaking.

Support for Arming Libyan Rebels Wanes, Rules of Engagement Unclear |
| By: David Dayen Thursday March 31, 2011 4:23 pm |
The debate over whether to arm rebels in Libya still rages, although given that we have CIA operatives on the ground coordinating air strikes and a secret finding authorizing the President to provide covert support, including arms shipments, it seems like something of a red herring. But for what it’s worth, it’s incredibly unpopular. We knew that House Intelligence Chairman Mike Rogers (who would statutorily have to be consulted and give his assent even in a covert shipment, though that never stopped Ronald Reagan) was against it, and he mentions to Foreign Policy that the Obama cabinet was split on the notion. More important, Turkey, the only majority-Muslim member of NATO, is against it.
FDA Reverses Decision to Give Drug Company Right to Ripoff Pregnant Women |
| By: Jon Walker Thursday March 31, 2011 3:37 pm |
This is a rare piece of good news reflecting the positive impact investigative journalism and public outcry can have. The Food and Drug Administration has partly reversed its horrible decision to grant a drug company an exclusive monopoly over an already commonly used medication, which allowed that company to jack up prices 15,000%.
House Republicans Deliver Nonsense Letter to Elizabeth Warren |
| By: David Dayen Thursday March 31, 2011 2:50 pm |
So, Spencer Bachus and Shelley Moore Capito are really upset with Elizabeth Warren. In a letter from the two leaders on the House Financial Services Committee, they demand that Warren correct her testimony to the committee from March 16. See, when asked about the mortgage servicer settlement and CFPB’s role in it, Warren said that they merely provided advice and expertise to state and federal regulators working on the agreement. But aha!
Japan Nuclear Disaster Update: Increased Radiation Detected on Land and Sea |
| By: Scarecrow Thursday March 31, 2011 2:00 pm |
Japanese officials on Thursday confronted significantly increased radiation readings, well above safe levels on land and sea. The increases occurred even as they continued efforts to inject fresh water in Units 1-3 reactors and spent fuel storage ponds and pumped contaminated water out of turbine building basements and nearby trenches.
