Needless to say, Forrest is a pretty easy guy to denounce. This was a political gift, in a way, to Barbour. I mean, a white Southern Republican like Barbour could get himself into some trouble for denouncing, say, Robert E. Lee. But Forrest? Is Barbour really that worried about losing the white supremacist vote?

Obviously the shutdown of the Internet or the threat to have the military fire on its own people didn’t save Egypt’s now-former president Hosni Mubarak. But they provide the building blocks for how other nations might handle this crisis, out of the watchful eye of the world. This could already be happening in Iran, or Libya, or Bahrain. Mubarak may not have saved his own autocracy, but he may end up saving others.

The Madison School District will shut down today, after large percentages of teachers called in sick to protest Governor Scott Walker’s proposed budget bill that would strip them and most other public employees in Wisconsin of most of their collective bargaining rights. Thousands of teachers, students, activists and other public workers are expected to descend on the Capitol this morning for another day of protests against the budget plan. Hundreds stayed overnight inside the Rotunda, setting up makeshift tents and bunking for the night.
