Well, this is a compelling touch, bound to warm the hearts of family-values Republicans seeking a presidential nominee next year. I’m not sure he’s “Newt’s Divorce Lawyer” when the final result was an annulment, but Randy Evans now speaks for Newt’s nascent presidential campaign:
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported Saturday that Randy Evans, the lawyer in charge of Gingrich’s business interests, said Gingrich would announce the formation of a presidential exploratory committee within “the next 10 days.” Evans was Gingrich’s lawyer during his divorce proceedings in 1999.
That was this divorce:
Callista Bisek, Gingrich’s current wife, became his mistress first and his wife second (really third, if one is counting wives), while Marianne was home visiting her mother. In 1999, Marianne had just been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Newt asked Callista to marry him before he and Marianne had agreed to divorce. The affair had been going on for years. Newt compared Marianne to a “Jaguar” and Callista to a “Chevrolet” and said he needed a Chevrolet, not a Jaguar, according to the Esquire story. In 2000 the couple wed.
Even so Gingrich continued to give speeches about family. “How do you give that speech and do what you are doing?” Marianne asked him. They were in the death throes of their relationship. “It doesn’t matter what I do,” he told her, according to the Esquire story. “People need to hear what I have to say. There’s no one else who can say what I say. It doesn’t matter what I live.”
Not to be confused with Newt’s previous divorce:
Newt proposed to Marianne (she was 28, he 36) in 1980 while his first wife, Jackie, was in the hospital recovering from treatments for uterine cancer. He hadn’t yet even asked her for a divorce. Newt met Jackie in high school. She was his geometry teacher. He was sixteen, she was 25. When he left, Jackie was nearly destitute. Jackie, the Esquire story reports, “had to get a court order just to pay her utility bills.”
History-making disgraced “don’t call me fat!” former Speaker Newt Gingrich is the “underrated” (WaPo’s Cillizza) likely presidential candidate whose campaign is centered on the theme that America is in moral crisis:
So as he travels the country, he is striking two related notes: that the nation faces not just a fiscal crisis but also a loss of its moral foundation, and that his conversion to Catholicism two years ago is part of an evolution that has given him a deeper appreciation for the role of faith in public life.
That sounds like something which Newt might want to avoid, since loss of moral foundation is at the center of the question: “Which hideous adulterous divorce from which wife who was being treated for a which life-changing or -altering disease?”
Especially when Newt’s campaign spokesman is his most recent divorce attorney.

Good evening.
I think the jury’s still out on that one. If Newt stands a chance of winning, there’s definitely room to talk about moral crisis.
Trading in your damaged wives, cheating…signs of very bad moral character. America obviously suffers from terrible amnesia.
Hi there.
And let’s not forget the ethical cloud of sulfur under which Newt left Congress…
Teddy!
Well if anyone knows from moral crises, it is Newt the toady. He has certainly precipitated plenty of them.
I’m feeling the Newt douchementum. Fer sure.
IOKIYAR.
Well there is one way corporations and the financial elite gurus can assure Obomba’s re-election. Newt would guarantee an Obomba victory and 4 more years of Republican policies. It’s every banker and corporation’s wet dream.
hi lsls
i’m less interested in his foibles than his smirking condescension at masking them.
Plus, he’s newt Gingrich for Pete’s sake.
And the Oscar goes to………………….
The Dem Party and best supporting Oscar goes to…..The Rethuglican Party! Yay! A double win!!
Perhaps it will be fun to watch dueling “Christians” Huckabee and Romney question Newt’s morality in the Rethug primary battles. Which one will pull the knife first?
Hey, I thought the Catholic church doesn’t recognize divorce. How can he join their club?
Newt had morals at one time? Must have been when he was very young.
My money is on Hucklebuck. Mittster doesn’t want to call too much attention to his religion on Newt’s home turf.
The electorate will not fall in love with Newt Gingrich. Next!
I think those were embryonic morals that miscarried without ever implanting.
C’mon Teddy: the guy converted to Catholicism, got confessed, and relieved of any and all sins. Or so he thinks. Sister Benedict explained it this way: when you commit a mortal sin, it’s like pounding a nail into a board. When you go to confession, you pull the nail out. But. There is still a hole, and it’s still there when you die.
IIRC, he has really bad unfavorability ratings. Almost into failin’ Palin territory.
We’re all innocent in the womb. Newt lost his soon after birth.
Promise the archbishop a little money for new windows or something, get your lawyer to say (convincingly) that you didn’t know what you were doing when you said ‘I do’ the first time (or two), and your previous marriage[s] can be disappeared from the church’s memory, if not from everyone else’s.
On the other hand, Newtie does need to learn to keep it zipped when he’s not with his wife-of-the-decade.
I almost put a question mark after Romney when calling him “Christian.”
There’s plenty of folks that think Mormons are a weird cult.
If Mitt raised the issue, he’d open himself to questions about his “magic underwear.”
True, but that hasn’t stopped the Quitter, so why should it stop Newtie?
Frankly I am not sure they survived that long.
I wonder how his parents put up with him long enough to get him out of the house.
That is Romney’s biggest deficit. In the South, the GOP home turf, the folks that vote in the primaries consider him some kind of devil worshiper.
Annulment the first marriage or the first and second marriages were never legal before the eyes of the church so Newt is free to marry? Why were his first and second marriages never legal were they were never consummated? Did his wives lie about being PaganS???
Or maybe Newt just did what rich Catholics always do and but an Annulment? It seems Newt the needy Narcissist is projecting his Moral Crisis on the Nation.
After all a man who does not take care of his family is no man at all.
Neither one of them could get elected dog catcher, but they can still grift like mad bilking the rubes.
Annulment a church lawyer declares you previous marriages were never legal but wait doesn’t that make all Newt’s previous kids Bastards in the Eyes of the Church and they can’t inherit? I am no expert on church law never mind church vs real law.
But you have to admit that Joseph Smith was a very imaginative con man.
Perfect GOP role model.
I consider him a devil worshipper Manana/Money:)
I personally do not see much difference between him and John Wesley, John Calvin, Martin Luther, or any of the rest. (FWIW, I have read extensive parts of Wesley’s diaries. Very enlightening).
Annulment are a church court case I would love to know just why Newt’s two marriages were ruled to have never existed.
lol
What is Chris smoking the economy is in shambles unemployment numbers are high people are losing their homes we are losing 2 wars the Arab Middle East is revolting we fear oil prices are going to go sky high and Newt wants to lecture America and Obama about a Moral Crisis?
That is Newts central theme to Newt’s Presidential Campaign an issue that doesn’t even make the top 10 of our worries?
We are suppose to all listen to Newt lecture us about morals a guy who gets his wife to sign divorce papers while she is in a hospital bed with cancer? A woman who bore his kids and he left so poor the church had to get a collection going to help them?
Chris thinks we need moral advice from Newt?
Great neologism, and so all-purpose in today’s culture, especially our political morass.
Remember, Jesus says that no man can serve two masters–but Newt has little to worry about in that respect.
I think I’m going to call it a night early. Peace out, y’all!
Once annulled, I believe the marriages no longer ended in divorce.
And if we send him a hundred bucks, he will put in a good word for us with the Pope.
Before high school, certainly.
ah yes. Just the person i want lecturing me on morals … a person who has none. go away, newtie, crawl back under your rock.
Niters!
Well, like all religions at their earliest stages, ya gotta admit there’s some real holes in the whole Moroni story….
Mitt is also a privateer pirate. He’s no capitalist, and never created a job in his life.
Evening Teddy. If we had a functioning press, it would be hilarious to see Newtie campaign from the stump of morality. But since we have none, he will do an adequate job of anointing himself as purveyor of purity with some ecclesiastical white-out that shields him from Serious Villagers tough questions.
Newt the GOP idea mans ideas were old back in the 80 his economic policy is Chicago School NeoHooversim.
His anti crime ideas led to a huge increase in the prison population. His free trade ideas he did help Clinton pass NAFTA are something he has to run away from, deregulation of the banks he helped pass that.
Chris thinks Newt is the GOP’s idea man? My question is when has Newt ever had a good idea?
Mormons are just Scientologists without the famous people.
Sort of like that virgin birth and rising from the dead thing.
Oh Gawd, I must steal that.
Mitt’s Bain Capital bought Home Depot right before the Housing crisis hit. They bought Clear Channel home of Rush Limbaugh and to afford Rush’s huge contract clear channel had to lay off people. The deal was so bad Mitt had to threaten to sue his banks because they thought the deal sucked.
Mitt is a bad business man nobody sells a home in this housing market unless they have to Mitt has sold a few of his homes.
Time for me to toddle off. Take care all.
best definition i’ve ever heard!
I’m sure I didn’t invent it.
LOL. And Mormans have more kids, lots and lots of kids.
And really, I don’t care about anyone’s religion, until it’s tenets spill over into my public policy.
‘evenin’, all-
Just the simple fact that Newt can even be considered a serious candidate for President should be a red flag that the nation is in serious trouble.
There are plenty of perfectly good religions, but when one gets perverted to advance a particular ideology it can become dangerous due to fanatical elements in both politics and religion. A weak mind can excuse any behavior by feeling they are working for a higher power.
He would (should) have had to get the Church to agree to annullments of the first two marriages, for which he would almost certainly have to have the cooperation of those exes.
When I did it, I had to pretty much swear that I didn’t see marriage as a religious sacrament, or something along those lines. And my ex had to fill out forms saying much the same thing. He was willing to. Had he said that he absolutely saw our marriage as sacred and vowed to before God, I wouldn’t have gotten the annullment.
OTOH, rich folks and famous folks tend to get cut breaks. I just can’t imagine that both exes were willing – but who knows?
I can’t imagine marrying the loathsome creep in the first place, so what do I know about how they think?
The weak minds are their grunts, and the profiteers are their Generals.
In the case of the Mormans, they also believe they’re the true people. The non-believers are Gentiles who are godless creatures who deserve nothing.
Newt:
Why don’t you and John McCain just start a self-help group and leave the rest of us alone.
He did. He’s helping himself just fine.
If the urge to take Chris Cillizza seriously ever arises for some reason … don’t do it.
Underrated? I guess we could bump Newty up to “less likely than Palin.”
I didn’t realize it was based on marriage as a religious sacrament. I thought it was more about the fornication issue.
Consummated v.s. unconsummated.
Jackie wasn’t exactly the best role model for teachers, either.
Instead of posing with cute kittens and puppies to reform his image as a bellicose little prick, he choose a lawyer who comes with his own ugly narrative.
Way to go, Newt. Sounds like a public relations winner!
Odd. There are plenty of southerners who still think the Episcopal Church is “the Whore of Babylon,” let alone the Catholic church. I can’t believe those people are gonna understand why Newtie went over to the “idol-worshipin’ Papists.”
Crazy. Hmm. Was that annulment Teddy referred to a “legal” annulment, or a Church annulment? They’re quite different, and getting a legal annulment (speaking as teh ex-family lawyer here) would be pretty tough after a number of years of marriage. Unless there was a problem w/ the previous divorce.
And t TCU (I think) who asked about Church annulments making kids bastards, nope, there’s a convoluted argument about why it doesn’t. Same actually holds for legal annulments these days…it’s just not done to de-legitimize kids
Huh – last post wouldn’t let me type anymore, even a period.
You obviously know nothing about Catholic teaching. That said, it disappoints me greatly that Gingrich now besmirches my own church. Perhaps, we could annul his conversion.
Geographically speaking, he’s pulling a Palin.
She bailed out of Alaska because the lights are so much brighter in the lower 48.
Newt knows better than anyone that the Catholic church has permission to stride into the Senate majority leader’s office and rain down very effective holy fire on him. DC is superior to Georgia in that respect.
Thank you so much, bad Nelson.
Nah, you can have twelve kids and get a Church annulment if you didn’t enter it with the proper state of mind. Now, lacking that state of mind is pretty specific – I’ve just forgotten the language.
Had my 1st husband and I married in the Lutheran Church I grew up in, that would’ve made it tougher to persuade them we didn’t have the right state of mind. Dang it, I can’t remember the language.
The fact that we did marry in a non-denominational chapel (there was even a Koran and Muslim services held there) at our university, before a minister we didn’t know before, and never attended services again anywhere supported our claims not to believe at the time.
Consummation isn’t even as important for a state law annulment as it once was; it pretty much has to be that one or both have some disability – such as being a minor – preventing
Hmm, same problem – suddenly lines of type start rolling and I can’t type anymore.
Anyway, I’ll stop. I’m sure nobody wants a dissertation on civl and religious annulment, let alone one from somebody who can’t remember the details, lol!
Hey Ofg!
Serious Villagers don’t ask tough questions. It’s, like, a job requirement.
And that he can credibly run on a moral values platform shows what a cesspool our nation has become. We are ruled by elites who are perverse, ill-tempered, selfish, and greedy. Also: immoral.
Newt Gingrich is a genuinely creepy guy. Of the licks his lips too much and slobbers variety. I wouldn’t sit next to him on a bus.
Huh? Sorry, confused by your references. Who’s “bad Nelson?” Sen. Ben Nelson? Don’t understand about the Church striding into the Senate majority leader’s office etc. What don’t I know or understand?
There ya go!
I feel confident the best place for Newt is pushing a broom and buffing floors in empty buildings on swing shift. It’s possible he should wear special black and white horizontal stripped clothing (OK– the modern wear is optical orange). That way he can be as selfish and without a moral compass as he wants as he has virtually no chance of harming anyone else in the process yet he can do something that benefits the common good.
I’d disembark a bus should I find myself on one he was on.
Probably a bomb-carrying terrorist.
You’ve got to hand it to Newt – the man has no shame. He lacks it in prodigious amounts, in fact. He’ll make a good presidential candidate, if recent history is any guide.
Yup. Nothing could illustrate that point better than the way they treat Newt.
Honestly, I don’t think Newt will carry through. I think he’s just announcing so he can get donations and matching funds and then keep the money.
Oh, and equally or more important, he’ll be able to keep his name and ugly face in the news.
then he’ll drop out before the conventions.
He no more wants to do the work of being president than Palin wanted to do the governor’s work.
It goes to show the man has no judgment or any respect for the American people.
There are LOTS of lawyers in America. Finding another one who’d make a statement on behalf of the Newt ‘campaign’ couldn’t have been hard.
Oh my, sorry.
During the HC debate, Sen. Ben Nelson paraded the Catholic church’s bosses through Reid’s office, to throttle him about the Hyde Amendment, and the HC legislation’s effect on it.
It resulted in a few 180′s by the Majority Leader.
CTuttle is upstairs!
Late, Late Night FDL: This Is Country Music
That strikes me as a conversation with boundless potential for amusement.
I think I’d just make sure I got off before he did. He doesn’t strike me as the self-sacrificing type.
This could be hilarious. Having at one time been a member of the Mormon church I am aware that many, if not all Mormons believe that the Catholic church is of the devil. Likewise I’m pretty sure that the Catholics believe that the Mormon church is of the devil, and I know for a fact that the evangelical Christians believe that both the Mormons and Catholics are of the devil. This could become a rather fascinating free for all.
As for morality, currently it appears that a politician can only rise to the highest level of corruption, morality is experienced in a totally different manner by “conservatives” and Tea Bag Patriots.
Your right I don’t know how the Church can sell annulments to the highest bidder Newt has been around he knows what marriage is suppose to be his divorce lawyers have explained it to him but money buys the church. I just threw out some ridiculous reasons because well the church granting Newt an annulment is ridiculous.
You are right about that!
I don’t know much either, but if you’d care to share your knowledge about annulments in a diary at MyFDL, I think it might be rather timely. People make lots of jokes about them — I know I do — because we don’t know much. I’m not saying there would be fewer jokes about Newt’s annulments if you explained it. But it would contribute to the general knowledge about the topic around here, and that’s a good thing.
Also, if Newt’s running, I want to know what an annulment means. And what two annulments mean.
Thanks!
Annulment a church lawyer declares you previous marriages were never legal but wait doesn’t that make all Newt’s previous kids Bastards in the Eyes of the Church and they can’t inherit? I am no expert on church law never mind church vs real law.
Great point, TCU.
If he WAS considered married (the two previous) then he shouldn’t be able to be married “in the eyes of G*d, as far as the Catholic church is concerned because the Catholic church does not recognize divorce.
If his previous “marriages” are annulled, then you’re right, his children are bastards.
He can’t have it both ways, now can he.
