The USG’s pursuit of Julian Assange closely parallels Richard Nixon’s pursuit of John Lennon, with the exception that the extradition being sought for Assange is in the reverse direction of Lennon’s.

At the time, Nixon did not have the luxury of having Guantanamo available to “neutralize” Lennon. The USG has that capability today.

“You gotta remember, establishment, it’s just a name for evil. The monster doesn’t care whether it kills all the students or whether there’s a revolution. It’s not thinking logically, it’s out of control.” —

This is the beginning of the fight, not the end. Walker will not prevail because he has shown himself to be a radical partisan whose agendas is based purely on political opportunism, not what’s best for the sate or his constituents.

Hi, y’all.
In Krugman’s defense, he was travelling this week, and not posting his column or blog.
In fact, he was here in San Antonio yesterday, and in Oklahoma, too, so if his schedule was like that every day, I can see why he wasn’t posting.

Yes, the public outrage over what Walker is trying to do in WI is a bright spot.

When the revolution starts, the mantras will include “Remember Citizens United!” and “Remember Madison, Wisconsin!”

I think there are a whole lot of commentators here who don;t give the American people enough credit. You can’t expect more than 10 percent of the population at most to pay attention as closely as we do. I don;t know what or when the match will happen but I am sure that eventually it will. One thing about oligarchs and despots you can count on: they always go too far.

I agree. It’s been very sad over the last decade to watch the lack of public outrage over the looting of America.

But that seems to be changing.

First, many were waiting out the Bush era. For the last few years of that mess, there were bumper stickers with 1.20.09. Obama grabbed the energy for change and got elected.

But since then, nothing has changed and shit just keeps getting worse. Many more people are paying attention. Many are voicing their anger.

I think the American people are seeing things go from very bad to much worse and aren’t going to take it anymore.

Several recalls are in the works for eligible Republican State Senators and several requests for criminal investigations were filed yesterday, because Walker’s punked phone call appears to have him soliciting campaign donations using State facilities, a violation of campaign laws. There are also requests for criminal or ethics violation investigations concerning exactly who discussed endangering public safety by considering deploying agitators.

I don’t know what you have against Krugman but without him we’d have Greenwald…. and that’s pretty much it. Glenn isn’t interested in kissing ass for msm access. He’s late off the mark on this one but nobody’s perfect.

And you think that’s unique to Americans? That’s a bias. Look how long the Egyptians put up with Mubarak. He’s been a despot there for thirty years.

Folks want things to change overnight. Not. Gonna. Happen. We’re a large segmented country. If one is not prepared for a long, protracted struggle burnout comes quick.

People will engage when policies begin to affect them or those close to them.

Yup. When it starts landing on your front doorstep, you suddenly become much more focused. The trick is in trying to effectively channel that energy. FoxPac (and fellow wingnut travelers) are pretty good at that game. Given their malicious agenda, we’ve simply got to be better.

Glenn has not been late on the issues that are his specialty.

Being dense & late on the issues that are Krugman’s specialty is what I have against him. And at the meeting I attended where he spoke several months ago, he actually mentioned that he was astonished that the 97% (he didn’t use the #, but that’s what it is according to a survey of AEA) of economists weren’t speaking out against the neoliberal policies they disagreed with.

Exactly. Just because we follow politics doesn’t mean that everybody does. There are tens of millions who vote out of duty but do so entirely reflexively either out of partisan habit or out of pack mentality. A lot of people voted Republican in 2010 because the media kept talking about what a shellacking the Democrats were going to take. They wanted to be on the side of a winner. And tax breaks for the rich are all well and good…until people start paying 6 dollars for a gallon of gas and five dollars for a loaf of bread.

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863. The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964. I’ve been struggling against the status quo for close to 40 years and there haven’t been a lot of bright spots in that time. When I’m gone or no longer able to fight there’ll be somebody to take my place.

We’re the canary in the coal mine, face it. We pay attention so they don’t have to. It’s up to us to keep doing so and to keep trying to call attention to it. I know it gets frustrating but it isn’t unique to this time or this society.

Krugman like so many others left of center, believe that the basic system can be made to work with some regulation and enforcement.

But we’ve gone past that point, and have laws legalizing bribery and as a nation we worship wealth and protect those who have achieved it.

The left is now quite disabused of the notion of reforming the system… the pendulum thingy. It won’t be swinging back. The oligarchs won everything. They own or can buy the government and its policies… they own the media to put out propaganda and poison minds, and re write history and current events to fit their fantasy… they control energy, food, jobs, banking and have turned the US into a huge plantation.

Time for a slave uprising.

I was also pretty disgusted with his Nobel speech which was: U.S. econ development in 19th century took place along the RR lines. That’s it!

Not sure whether you were around in 12/08 when 3 of us on book salon with him argued strenuously against his defense of O’s economic team.

And the 3 of us (me, Hugh, selise) got roundly criticized by other FDLers for daring to stand up to and criticize the expert.

I believe that the governor hasn’t been in office long enough to be recalled–seem to recall reading that can’t happen before he’s in for a year. Some of the republican state legislators are eligible though.

I agree -

I rarely disagree with eCAHN – but do on this – Krugman is solid – just too polite.

And I fear I also do not see how there will be change – the media has sold out – voices against the rich, even at 100,000 strong are equated to 800 bussed in Tea Party folks.

There can’t be a law against collecting signatures on a petition, can there?

Coming late and someone may have already answered this, but there is a definite timeline and procedure for recall petitions. Here in CA you have to draft the petition in a certain format, get it approved as to form by the appropriate supervisor of elections (County Clerk, Sec of State, whatever), then you have to publish it in a newspaper. Then (most states) the target of the recall gets to have their response (in CA, 200 words) added to the petition. Only then can you start collecting signatures and you have a specific window in which to get enough qualified valid signatures.

I imagine that most states have similar regulations. And I’m pretty sure the law says that you can’t start the recall process until someone has been in office a year.
