hi eCAHN, big differences for sure…Liverpool is great fun but it’s definitely a working-class town, doesn’t quite have the sheen of parts of London. Along the Mersey waterfront though, lately there’s been lots of renewal and there are some great restaurants and hangouts.
Is the son or the father in charge? The son seems to be doing the talking?
Never got to Abbey Road while in London — maybe someday!

Can anyone translate State Deptese what does “all appropriate actions” in response. ” mean? Also Libya was on the terror watch list they blew up a plane why do American companies have any dealings with them?
If you ever get the opportunity, I’d recommend a visit. Still plenty of roots to be found there! And it’s in a good location to be able to get to the Lake District, Peak District, North Wales, etc in a fairly short time.

totally fucking full of fucking snow. gah. During daylight while shoveling the end of the driveway, i couldn’t even see the stop sign at the end of the street.
as i said over at the beach house, “Damn snow. I shoveled 3 inches. Waited a few hours. Then i shoveled 6 inches so the Daughter and g-unit could get in the driveway. Daughter reports roads were awful. (She was out ‘n about because she works on sunday.) I didn’t use the snowblower because i have not yet tried to operate it, and i didn’t think me kneeling in a dark garage, peering into the innards of a snowblower whilst trying to decipher a manual by flashlight could possibly end well.”

My mom’s roots are Welsh (Gladys Lee). Had an uncle Robert E. Lee, a navy cook who was on 4 ships that were sunk in Pearl Harbor. On the one occasion that I met him in my adult life, I asked him why anyone would want him on their ship.
Have copy of Samuel Lee’s civil war discharge certificate (war ended & he got sumptin like $8 discharge reward). Northern side.

heh … eye is fine, but still wearing an eye patch til i get a new lens prescription for my glasses. And GAK i will have bifocal lens for both eyes. But currently, with drug-store readers perched on my regular glasses, an eye-patch on one eye, difficulty adjusting to darkness, i just couldn’t see coping with the snowblower without my daughter home to coach me. Next time *g*

To be sure. I launched the totally unscientific Mubarak leaves pool. Phred chose the first Friday night. Which turned out to be a couple of weeks premature. So I suggested she got dibs on every Friday night. Which meant she eventually won.
Surely we could launch another totally debased unscientific poll on dictators.
Force show you will punish one and either they will fold or fight to the end. If some fold you have less to fight they respect nothing but strength and if you don’t use strength they will tell you anything you want to hear while doing the opposite.
Unless of course they need help getting a plane to Saudi Arabia because their plans have all failed.
Right now I bet that in exchange for help they are telling Obama they will boost oil production and save our economy.

I’ve been looking for a diary too I want to hear about efforts to recall GOPers in Wisconsin I think we should try and do this in every state like Ohio for one that we can. The GOP crashed the economy by not regulating banks. Obama is not regulating banks either or creating jobs now they want to cut our SS and if we are Union stop people from striking?
FDR taxed the rich 90% that worked in the real world 2 years of Obama and Helicopter Ben have not worked so we are going to have to fight.

Now that he’s volunteered to be a figurehead preznint; with he and the democrats having become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the repubican party, the idea of the U.S. being able to stumble along with two more years of this political clown, while maintaining a superficial resemblance to a functioning presidential administration, is simply ludicrous.
What a fucking disaster he’s brought on himself, and us.

Just gravitated over here after re-reading the entire Eric Alterman Book Salon thread. I participated in it for a bit today, but left because I thought he was such an arrogant asshole, and i didn’t want to add to the comment numbers.
But I see it got up over 400.
I tried, early on, to explain to him that his response of “read the book” could appear snotty & condescending. He then basically said that he didn’t want to waste his time “talking” to anyone who wasn’t thoroughly familiar with his work.
When I hopped away to Google him, and saw that he was a “professor,” I understood: he assigns the reading and gives the lecture; you just take notes & nod “uh huh. That’s brilliant.”
I also modeling a non-snotty response, but again he said basically he didn’t want to waste his time and “shouldn’t have to re-write the book in a discussion here.”
Nice to meet you we have lots of pups in OR I used to live in Portland myself and my brother is still there.
Whats would you say was his problem was the thread a big fight? If the thread was at least interesting I might read it.

I think the solution is at some point the American economy will become too much like Egypt and there will be rioting then either we win or the country goes Nazi.
Given the direction we are headed its only a matter of time and if Libya falls higher oil prices means it will take less time.

His basic problem was that he takes as a given [and thinks everyone else should too] that Obama is “a good guy trying to do good” who’s just been held back in all his good works by a “bad” system.
When some of us [like moi] asked him to list a few of Barry’s “tries” [things he'd "tried" to do, but been vexed], he had no response.
He also said it was useless to think Dems could run anyone else in 2012, that 3rd parties were useless — I dunno, just on & on in that vein.
And, as I said, folks would ask him questions [this was at the beginning before things got heated], and he would snap “read the book.” He did this two or three times, and I then wandered in with my Helpful Suggestion.
At one point he said that if we weren’t going to accept his premise [Obama = Good Guy hamstrung by Bad System] then we should just go discuss the moderator’s book.
I think he was This Close to calling us F*&^ing Ret#rds.
Wow i quit at 200 you are strong. I almost left at 50 but had to keep lookin. That was not a very connected conversation. Frustration over whelmed clear thought. I think Eric was not well informed as to what he might face.

You’re right on a couple of levels:
** he seemed shocked that this wasn’t a “book group” -type discussion, where everyone HAS read the book. I even commented to him that he should check some prior book salons to see that that’s NOT the case. While many pups have read the book, a large number come to the salon to get a feel for the book, to see if they might want to buy it. [Unless, of course, it's Matt Taibbi, in which case you WANT to read the book before the discussion.]
** he also seemed to think he could dictate — although not explicitly — the “terms” of the discussion, specifically, as he said about mid-way through, that everyone should be operating under the premise that Obama was a good guy, trying hard, and that a bad system was blocking him. Hey, THAT’s not gonna fly at the Lake, and asking folks to accept it on blind faith sure isn’t the way to go. When people asked him for some “proof” of this “premise,” his response in effect was, “well all the Very Important People Who Understand Things know that this is true. [Thus how could you question it?]“
To think he’s a Nation journalist too…! My how far our MSM has drifted right…! 8-(

I read the intro at the top of the Salon, and the first thing I thought was that he had written the book for a very narrow audience – the remaining o’Bots – and he had a catastrophic scheduling fail when he booked this place, this crowd.
Mauimom: a fine post, and a perfect assessment of Alterman. I couldn’t stand him, either. I’ve seen enough of this “intellectual” already.
His core idea; that circumstances and the big, bad, republican party thwarted Obama from his cherished wish to take the bull by the horns, is such “centrist” blather, and Alterman presents it with such media arrogance, that it’s nauseating to read.
Ass-covering for this hack, who can, and did, fuck up a political opportunity of historic proportions, has become a cottage-industry for “moderate” democrats.
No president has ever come into office with as much clout as Obama, and then utterly failed to comprehend that he was in an either/or situation:
Either he confronts the assholes who’ve dragged us into this misery, or he sinks like a political cinderblock, into history’s dustbin.
Alterman and the rest of Obama’s apologists can pimp the notion of the big, bad, republicans stealing poor, progressive, Obama’s political mojo, but it won’t wash with the voters, and there’s a kind of perverse democracy-in-reverse in watching the ongoing process of more and more of us refusing to applaud while Obama runs around the deck of the Titanic frantically shuffling chairs.
The media can flack for the let’s-make-the-best-of-this-situation bullshit, but at this point, reading anyone who’s so much as farting arond with the notion that we need, or are obligated, to reward this political Buster Keaton with a chance at a second term,is like watching an animal eat it’s own waste.
I want none of it, and I believe that if we’re lunatic enough to present Obama to the voters in 2012, the democratic party will deserve anything that happens to it.

I glanced at the Alterman Book Salon. I had thought about participating, but frankly, something about the opening description of the book made Alterman sound like a jerk. It wasn’t anything blatant – more like a sixth-sense kind of thing – but did I ever make the right decision.
Compare that with the Book Salon on Wendell Potter’s Deadly Spin.
I think hating on sight the very important people line is something everyone at the Lake can agree upon.
