Al Jazeera reporting American citizen (who’s daughter is apparently Lybian and has spoken to Al Jazeera) was petitioning/demonstrating and arrested at the main courthouse in Tripoli…maybe yesterday.
The daughter Rahma is interviewed by phone in the first clip at http://blogs.aljazeera.net/middle-east/2011/02/17/live-blog-libya#
No news about the father. I could not catch the name, but something vaguely like Jubani Tuvani. Help was requested.
Thought someone here might be in a position to make an inquiry (though AJ probably has a huge readership).
hi eCAHN, big differences for sure…Liverpool is great fun but it’s definitely a working-class town, doesn’t quite have the sheen of parts of London. Along the Mersey waterfront though, lately there’s been lots of renewal and there are some great restaurants and hangouts.
WASHINGTON, Feb 20 (Reuters) – The United States on Sunday issued its strongest condemnation yet of Libya’s violent crackdown on protesters, citing what it called credible reports of hundreds of deaths and injuries and threatening to take “all appropriate actions” in response.
Libya is a major energy producer with significant investment from Britain’s BP (BP.L), Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) of the United States and Italy’s ENI (ENI.MI) among others.
Can anyone translate State Deptese what does “all appropriate actions” in response. ” mean? Also Libya was on the terror watch list they blew up a plane why do American companies have any dealings with them?
If you ever get the opportunity, I’d recommend a visit. Still plenty of roots to be found there! And it’s in a good location to be able to get to the Lake District, Peak District, North Wales, etc in a fairly short time.
Short version: Cold, cold, cold. Fall down stairs. Cold, cold, cold. Snow, snow, snow.

Siun’s thread we were reading tweets that people in hospitals were being killed I don’t think the Saudis or France can let him flee there now. I think who ever is in charge is crazier than Dick Cheney with a shotgun and a few beers in him.
totally fucking full of fucking snow. gah. During daylight while shoveling the end of the driveway, i couldn’t even see the stop sign at the end of the street.
as i said over at the beach house, “Damn snow. I shoveled 3 inches. Waited a few hours. Then i shoveled 6 inches so the Daughter and g-unit could get in the driveway. Daughter reports roads were awful. (She was out ‘n about because she works on sunday.) I didn’t use the snowblower because i have not yet tried to operate it, and i didn’t think me kneeling in a dark garage, peering into the innards of a snowblower whilst trying to decipher a manual by flashlight could possibly end well.”
My mom’s roots are Welsh (Gladys Lee). Had an uncle Robert E. Lee, a navy cook who was on 4 ships that were sunk in Pearl Harbor. On the one occasion that I met him in my adult life, I asked him why anyone would want him on their ship.
Have copy of Samuel Lee’s civil war discharge certificate (war ended & he got sumptin like $8 discharge reward). Northern side.
SINGAPORE — Oil prices jumped above $87 a barrel Monday in Asia amid investor concern that the violent protests spreading in Libya could disrupt crude supplies from the OPEC nation.
On Sunday, Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, son of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, warned protesters that they risked igniting a civil war in which Libya’s oil wealth “will be burned.” Libya exports about 1.0 million barrels of crude a day.
If he blows up his own oil wells…$87 a barrel will be cheap. I have no ideas how much oil prices should go up the Fear Premium of another Arab country doing this Iran comes to mind as well as the inbred Saudi Royal family well once an act has been done others sometimes copy cat it.
He was quite elderly at the time, so not sure he understood the full snark of my Q. Think he got it on the margin, but couldn’t quite garner all his intellectual capabilities to respond.

So after 9/11 everyone but Iraq, Iran and North Korea were our friends and now our friends with the exception of Pakistan and Iran are all having protests?
I wonder if the Arab states knowing Bush didn’t care about torture as long as they were al Quieda all decided to really crack down?
Could that be a cause along with higher food prices, fuel prices, and well more torture means more corruption Government officials don’t have to pretend to be nice so much and can ask for more bribes if they threaten to tell everyone your with Ossama which means you disappear and all your stuff becomes theirs.
How will the various Arab leaders react if they see that even crazy violence can’t stop the people will they create jobs and tax the rich more or will they decide that Gadhafi just was not violent enough?
To be sure. I launched the totally unscientific Mubarak leaves pool. Phred chose the first Friday night. Which turned out to be a couple of weeks premature. So I suggested she got dibs on every Friday night. Which meant she eventually won.
Surely we could launch another totally debased unscientific poll on dictators.

- Saudi Arabia said Sunday that it stands ready “with all its capabilities” to shore up Bahrain’s ruling royal family
Kuwait’s emir, Sheik Sabah Ahmed al-Sabah, also called the Bahraini king on Sunday and stressed that “the security of Bahrain is the security of the region,”
did norske make it back down to madison? I haven’t seen any more comments from him (not that i read every single thread), i’ve been hoping he’d do a diary.
I’ve been looking for a diary too I want to hear about efforts to recall GOPers in Wisconsin I think we should try and do this in every state like Ohio for one that we can. The GOP crashed the economy by not regulating banks. Obama is not regulating banks either or creating jobs now they want to cut our SS and if we are Union stop people from striking?
FDR taxed the rich 90% that worked in the real world 2 years of Obama and Helicopter Ben have not worked so we are going to have to fight.
I had thought that with Obama’s determinedly squandering all that mojo that the voters gave he and the dems in 2008, the full-on collapse still wouldn’t come until late this year, or early 2012…
No more. The denouement of this wretched little “centrist” political soap opera isn’t going to take that long. Now that he’s volunteered to be a figurehead preznint; with he and the democrats having become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the repubican party, the idea of the U.S. being able to stumble along with two more years of this political clown, while maintaining a superficial resemblance to a functioning presidential administration, is simply ludicrous.
What a fucking disaster he’s brought on himself, and us.
People want what money cant buy. Sad the price though.
Looks like i should watch the oil markets in the morn and decide on new electrics. Lookin like summer gas could be off the charts.
I have the solution. Someone needs to get hold of the car used in the Twilight Zone episode which forced it’s owner to tell the truth against their will. Mail it to Barry and tell him it’s a present from the Republicans. He’ll be behind the wheel in no time.
Just gravitated over here after re-reading the entire Eric Alterman Book Salon thread. I participated in it for a bit today, but left because I thought he was such an arrogant asshole, and i didn’t want to add to the comment numbers.
But I see it got up over 400.
I tried, early on, to explain to him that his response of “read the book” could appear snotty & condescending. He then basically said that he didn’t want to waste his time “talking” to anyone who wasn’t thoroughly familiar with his work.
When I hopped away to Google him, and saw that he was a “professor,” I understood: he assigns the reading and gives the lecture; you just take notes & nod “uh huh. That’s brilliant.”
I also modeling a non-snotty response, but again he said basically he didn’t want to waste his time and “shouldn’t have to re-write the book in a discussion here.”
I think the solution is at some point the American economy will become too much like Egypt and there will be rioting then either we win or the country goes Nazi.
Given the direction we are headed its only a matter of time and if Libya falls higher oil prices means it will take less time.
His basic problem was that he takes as a given [and thinks everyone else should too] that Obama is “a good guy trying to do good” who’s just been held back in all his good works by a “bad” system.
When some of us [like moi] asked him to list a few of Barry’s “tries” [things he'd "tried" to do, but been vexed], he had no response.
He also said it was useless to think Dems could run anyone else in 2012, that 3rd parties were useless — I dunno, just on & on in that vein.
And, as I said, folks would ask him questions [this was at the beginning before things got heated], and he would snap “read the book.” He did this two or three times, and I then wandered in with my Helpful Suggestion.
At one point he said that if we weren’t going to accept his premise [Obama = Good Guy hamstrung by Bad System] then we should just go discuss the moderator’s book.
I think he was This Close to calling us F*&^ing Ret#rds.
Wow i quit at 200 you are strong. I almost left at 50 but had to keep lookin. That was not a very connected conversation. Frustration over whelmed clear thought. I think Eric was not well informed as to what he might face.
Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has left the country for Venezuela and his son has warned “a bloody civil war” is looming, as violent protests spread around the county despite a heavy crackdown, according to media reports
I think Eric was not well informed as to what he might face.
You’re right on a couple of levels:
** he seemed shocked that this wasn’t a “book group” -type discussion, where everyone HAS read the book. I even commented to him that he should check some prior book salons to see that that’s NOT the case. While many pups have read the book, a large number come to the salon to get a feel for the book, to see if they might want to buy it. [Unless, of course, it's Matt Taibbi, in which case you WANT to read the book before the discussion.]
** he also seemed to think he could dictate — although not explicitly — the “terms” of the discussion, specifically, as he said about mid-way through, that everyone should be operating under the premise that Obama was a good guy, trying hard, and that a bad system was blocking him. Hey, THAT’s not gonna fly at the Lake, and asking folks to accept it on blind faith sure isn’t the way to go. When people asked him for some “proof” of this “premise,” his response in effect was, “well all the Very Important People Who Understand Things know that this is true. [Thus how could you question it?]“
Mauimom-
on March 15, 2008, Alterman was before this very audience, with his new book…
And this is pretty ironic… Why We’re Liberals.
If he didn’t know what he was walking into, it’s because he was not feeling at all well the day he accepted the invitation. He certainly wasn’t on his game today.
Wow, didn’t know that. Did he get the same “warm” reception? But of course at that point [March 2008] he couldn’t have been defending Obama to a bunch of folks well versed in the myriad ways Obama has screwed them.
And the moderator [Will Bunch] is from The Nation as well.
This whole episode just goes to show how delusional some folks can get when they only talk with their tight little group of like-minded friends inside the bubble.
His basic problem was that he takes as a given [and thinks everyone else should too] that Obama is “a good guy trying to do good” who’s just been held back in all his good works by a “bad” system.
This guy sounds funny belief not facts seems to be a Dem as well as GOP problem. Insisting other share his world view? Sounds Authoritarian
When some of us [like moi] asked him to list a few of Barry’s “tries” [things he'd "tried" to do, but been vexed], he had no response.
Authoritarian Cognitive Dissonance when confronted by reality Check
He also said it was useless to think Dems could run anyone else in 2012, that 3rd parties were useless — I dunno, just on & on in that vein.
Appeal to join his group because its the In Group and all other groups were a joke no attempt to reach out to people or entertain other ideas. Again Check
And, as I said, folks would ask him questions [this was at the beginning before things got heated, and he would snap “read the book.” He did this two or three times, and I then wandered in with my Helpful Suggestion.
Overly defensive does not like people questioning his ideas check
Why did he come here and who invited him from what you say fake Liberal Juan Williams might have gotten a better welcome. I have seen conservatives get better book club welcomes.
I might have to read this thread just to see into the mind of the Obama team and how they think. If you don’t want to explain and or debate your book you should not come to the Lake.:)
I think Nancy Pelosi’s daughter’s book me and two other morning people sat out because we knew we could not keep quiet. We had met her on a previous thread.
She accused me of not understanding politics??? given her Mom’s record of surrender well I stayed away rather than turn the book club into a food fight.
right…
I read the intro at the top of the Salon, and the first thing I thought was that he had written the book for a very narrow audience – the remaining o’Bots – and he had a catastrophic scheduling fail when he booked this place, this crowd.
Mauimom: a fine post, and a perfect assessment of Alterman. I couldn’t stand him, either. I’ve seen enough of this “intellectual” already.
His core idea; that circumstances and the big, bad, republican party thwarted Obama from his cherished wish to take the bull by the horns, is such “centrist” blather, and Alterman presents it with such media arrogance, that it’s nauseating to read.
Ass-covering for this hack, who can, and did, fuck up a political opportunity of historic proportions, has become a cottage-industry for “moderate” democrats.
No president has ever come into office with as much clout as Obama, and then utterly failed to comprehend that he was in an either/or situation:
Either he confronts the assholes who’ve dragged us into this misery, or he sinks like a political cinderblock, into history’s dustbin.
Alterman and the rest of Obama’s apologists can pimp the notion of the big, bad, republicans stealing poor, progressive, Obama’s political mojo, but it won’t wash with the voters, and there’s a kind of perverse democracy-in-reverse in watching the ongoing process of more and more of us refusing to applaud while Obama runs around the deck of the Titanic frantically shuffling chairs.
The media can flack for the let’s-make-the-best-of-this-situation bullshit, but at this point, reading anyone who’s so much as farting arond with the notion that we need, or are obligated, to reward this political Buster Keaton with a chance at a second term,is like watching an animal eat it’s own waste.
I want none of it, and I believe that if we’re lunatic enough to present Obama to the voters in 2012, the democratic party will deserve anything that happens to it.
I do think we should book people we disagree with but they have to be willing to defend their ideas the guy is not my Mom and can’t say I’m right I’m your Mom Authoritarianism doesn’t fly with us and even if it did what makes him an Authority to us?
I do think we should book people we disagree with…
Yep. I think it was a case of booking fail. I don’t think he believes what he was shoveling. He was selling to o’Bots, and there are none to be found here.
I forgot who it was I remember disagreeing with the Conservative a bunch it was a book club but on some points his answers were great it its like Mika’s Dad on Morning Joe the I disagree with him a bunch but he is smart.
Smart conservatives don’t get on tv Jane gives them book club space John Dean for example. What the heck happened to the GOP?
Sponsors of a US speaking tour featuring boycott, divestment and sanctions movement leader Omar Barghouti call on supporters to contact the US Consulate in Jerusalem and the Department of State to fulfill US promise of “Promoting the Global Marketplace of Ideas” and grant Barghouti’s visa:
Effectively canceling a planned speaking tour, the US consulate in Jerusalem has inexplicably delayed the granting of a visa for Omar Barghouti, founding member of the Palestinian Civil Society Boycott, Divestment, Sanction (BDS) campaign, due to tour the United States this April for the release of his new book, Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: The Global Struggle for Palestinian Rights.
I glanced at the Alterman Book Salon. I had thought about participating, but frankly, something about the opening description of the book made Alterman sound like a jerk. It wasn’t anything blatant – more like a sixth-sense kind of thing – but did I ever make the right decision.
“I think he was this close to calling us “fucking retards”.
Insults to out group members that run personal rather than engages ideas check
John Dean would have a field day Hmm liberal Authoritarians how Obama and Rahm destroyed the Democratic party? I think I might have a new book subject for John:) can anyone get ahold of him?
The Shock Doctrine book salon was cool with with her we were all agreeing with everything. John Dean we learned stuff, sometimes we have great debates with authors.
I’m not sure whats worse boring or a person who says stuff but won’t debate?

Sorry I’ve missed Liverpool. Guess I’ve always thought about it as being more validly UK than London.
Prolly wouldn’t be more interested in urban renewal & new restaurants in Liverpool than I am in any other town. Kinda betrays the real roots IMO.

Aloha, jc…! Don’t be a stranger…! *g*
Nice to meet you we have lots of pups in OR I used to live in Portland myself and my brother is still there.
Whats would you say was his problem was the thread a big fight? If the thread was at least interesting I might read it.
Aloha, MM…
I caught some of the tail end of it and it looked like he wasn’t prepared whatsoever for the Lake…!
How’s your Isle…? Gorgeous day here in Hilo town…!
I think the solution is at some point the American economy will become too much like Egypt and there will be rioting then either we win or the country goes Nazi.
Given the direction we are headed its only a matter of time and if Libya falls higher oil prices means it will take less time.
The guy comes to our house and hasn’t heard how forceful we can be defending our ideas?
Aloha, Jim…! Welcome to LLN…! ;-)

Crap I thought the son maybe in charge up thread! What do we know about the son he seems Crazy Dick Cheney likes to torture people crazy.
That was my take on it too.
[Thus how could you question it?]“
To think he’s a Nation journalist too…! My how far our MSM has drifted right…! 8-(
Mauimom-
on March 15, 2008, Alterman was before this very audience, with his new book…
And this is pretty ironic…
Why We’re Liberals.
If he didn’t know what he was walking into, it’s because he was not feeling at all well the day he accepted the invitation. He certainly wasn’t on his game today.
Defending the indefensible is hard work.
This guy sounds funny belief not facts seems to be a Dem as well as GOP problem. Insisting other share his world view? Sounds Authoritarian
Authoritarian Cognitive Dissonance when confronted by reality Check
Appeal to join his group because its the In Group and all other groups were a joke no attempt to reach out to people or entertain other ideas. Again Check
…I have seen conservatives get better book club welcomes…
John Dean is one of my all time faves…! ;-)
” well all the very important people who understand things know this is true”
Can i use this in the outhouse?
“I think he was this close to calling us “fucking retards”.
Clack! 8-ball in the side pocket. :o)
I do think we should book people we disagree with but they have to be willing to defend their ideas the guy is not my Mom and can’t say I’m right I’m your Mom Authoritarianism doesn’t fly with us and even if it did what makes him an Authority to us?
Yep. I think it was a case of booking fail. I don’t think he believes what he was shoveling. He was selling to o’Bots, and there are none to be found here.
I would love to see Omar Barghouti on a Book Salon…! ;-)
Can ya tell that to missling…? ;-)
http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article11814.shtml
Yep America land of the brave home of the free. I wonder if the WH press corp will ask him about that?
But seconded I hope Jane books him.
I glanced at the Alterman Book Salon. I had thought about participating, but frankly, something about the opening description of the book made Alterman sound like a jerk. It wasn’t anything blatant – more like a sixth-sense kind of thing – but did I ever make the right decision.
Compare that with the Book Salon on Wendell Potter’s Deadly Spin.
I think hating on sight the very important people line is something everyone at the Lake can agree upon.
Now now, CTuttle…
Yes, Potter’s is the one to beat. Excellent Salon.
Insults to out group members that run personal rather than engages ideas check
John Dean would have a field day Hmm liberal Authoritarians how Obama and Rahm destroyed the Democratic party? I think I might have a new book subject for John:) can anyone get ahold of him?
Evening ct et pups.
Guess I’ll slip over and check out Book Salon. Later.
Aloha, Sunny…! ;-)
Hey Sunny!
Bring galoshes. And a beverage.
The Shock Doctrine book salon was cool with with her we were all agreeing with everything. John Dean we learned stuff, sometimes we have great debates with authors.
I’m not sure whats worse boring or a person who says stuff but won’t debate?
Nite good talk
Pleasant dreams, TCU…!

I swear I thought I saw $87 a barrel oil just an hour ago this is getting bad. Obama and Hilary are getting no sleep tonight with this news.
Ok nite
Well, I shall say Hello Goodbye…!
Mahalo for taking part in tonite’s excellent discourse…!
Aloha Oe…! *g*
Nice rant, tanbark. Someone should make the Great Betrayer read it. Not that it would sink in…
