Colin Powell, the US secretary of state at the time of the Iraq invasion, has called on the CIA and Pentagon to explain why they failed to alert him to the unreliability of a key source behind claims of Saddam Hussein’s bio-weapons capability.
Because the time to do that is definitely eight years later, not before you personally go out and base your case for war upon it.
“It has been known for several years that the source called Curveball was totally unreliable,” he told the Guardian . “The question should be put to the CIA and the DIA as to why this wasn’t known before the false information was put into the NIE sent to Congress, the president’s state of the union address and my 5 February presentation to the UN.”
Oh it’s “delightful” how willfully naive old hands get to appear in this country for the sake of their own reputations. Somehow all the policy-makers are both blameless and guileless in manufacturing this crap at the time. And then they pretend to demand answers a generation later.
This is modern America Mr. Powell, the one you helped make. The Village never looks back on the old lies, they just move on to pushing the new ones.

About Firedoglake
Isn’t it about time that looking back and finding out exactly what happened from about 2000 on…without it being some kind of hideous taboo to do so?
Powell is a victim of circumstance.
He did, without questioning, what he was told to do like a good little soldier.
He knew it was a bald faced bloody lie, or if he didn’t he should have been in our household or in thousands of other ordinary households across the world that knew it was a bald faced lie. He was told it was a lie by the UN inspectors but he would rather do what he was told than question the veracity. He was, as is popular in Washington, a willing whore. Well fuck him and the rest of the corporate pricks.
Good morning all,
Except for an occasional ting of guilt, colin seems to be living the good life, along with the other thugs, who are worshiped in this country for their war and the lies that made it all possible.
A stark case of DCS (Delayed Conscience Syndrome.)
It’s a living.
What a shocking photo of a matureless, soulless POS.
I’ll carry that image at work today. Great, just great.
have a good one.
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins and Kristof today. Ms. Collins addresses “Mrs. Bush, Abstinence and Texas,” and says everything’s bigger in Texas, including the birth rate and the weight of political decision-making. Mr. Kristof, who is in Manama, Bahrain, sends us “Tunisia. Egypt. Bahrain?” in which he says he is in the gulf kingdom while a brutal crackdown unfolds.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got a variety of bagels wtih cream cheese this morning. Now I’m off to prowl around the tubez to try to catch up on what I missed while the ‘puter was in the shop. Lard knows I can’t get news in the Savannah Daily Disappointment… Have a great day.
he lied to keep his job. pure and simple
Who would have thought that a source called “CURVEBALL” would tell a lie? Shocking, I tell you.
General, this is called “taking one for the team.” You new damn well as you sat in your Waldorf Astoria hotel room before the speech that this was bogus intel. Then was the time to resign. You missed it.
Victim of circumstance–Just like the thousands of US soldiers and the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians who are now silenced.
Just another case of wingnut revisionist history.
Powell still wants it both ways. Henry Clay said “I’d rather be right than President.” Powell is mush. He never did fall on his sword. The US invaded in March of 2003. By July 1, surely it was obvious to Powell that he had been had. However, he kept on keeping on. Surely, he must have had some doubt before the war. 1%? 2%? 5%? What per cent, General? It was certainly more cautious to be a lemming and find shelter following the herd. History will not be sympathetic to Powell.
30 years from now, wingers will be talking with reverence and wonder, about the great Bush presidency, his liberation of Iraq, his great fiscal policies, blah, blah, blah.
Oh, how they will long for the wonderful Bush years!
first of all, the cia DID known the information was unreliable, but cheney wasn’t happy with that finding from our cia so he brought back into force his fake cia, “team b” to tell his lie
powell’s hands have blood on them, of COURSE he knew curball was lying, he even said himself his presentation was the biggest regret of his career
we knew curvball was lying, the cia did, the president did, the vice president did, colon powell did and rice
they are all in this, all of them
It doesn’t really matter that Powell lied. Everyone knew Powell was lying but didn’t care. People seem to forget that the politicians were mimicking the voters, who wanted blood for 911. Anyone’s blood. That is the bottom line. Doesn’t matter how much finger pointing at an obvious corrupt, lying administration that is done. Even today, there are many Americans that really don’t give a sh*t how many innocent Iraqis have been killed, or Afghans. They just don’t care. The indestructible United States was attacked by someone (up for debate) and the aura of “we are the best and greatest at everything” came crashing down to reality. Egos were severely bruised and someobody must be punished. Americans just could not come to grips that the world’s greatest nation could be damaged by anything. Hell, Bush got a second term! Even with election fraud, that would be impossible if enough people didn’t agree with him to even make an election close. Now, those that did not want war/invasion, and who actually feel guilt, are forced to apologize and point for the majority of their countrymen. Cannot imagine what would happen if an actual foreign military invaded the US and actually did damage like the US is doing in the MidEast.
Good morning all.
Google Colin Powell My Lai. He wrote the coverup report.
He’s the one designated to fall on his sword for his masters.
He also, like Donald Trump, will always have his fortune & reputation repaired no matter what egregious sins they commit.
How do they do it?
Manufacturing evidence is what these liars do. They got Judith Miller to publish a bogus story and then all pointed to it as a fact.
Total effing liars. Interested in massaging their egos, pushing people around and cashing out.
Simple. He’s a military leader. They are all heroes. I can remember not that long ago, that a great number of blogs online (left/prog) were actually seeking this assclown out to run as a Dem. Blech.
What branch of the military was Donald Trump in? I missed that.
that’s revision, the administration had a fine target in the tali ban that would easily solve the blood thirst you are talking about, they wanted Iraq, bush said so even before he was elected
31 year old Colin Powell,Vietnam,Investingating,Whitewashing the atrocities of My Lai.Colin always been a good soldier for the Goverment not so good for the People.
democracynow: O commissioned a report about democracy movements in ME, suggesting they were more prepared for what happened in Egypt than they let on.
Geez, they sure fooled me.
He was in the Dick Army, Cheney Division
Why are you asking that?Honorable and Dishonorable has nothing to do with being in the mjlitary.
pretty much sums it up.
False witness is the village coin.
It was supposed to be a Q for canadianbeaver who asserted that Powell’s & Trump’s reputations remained untarnished because they were military heroes.
they write their own history, and sorta believe it
Daddy Trump always bailed out Donny,The MIC,will always bail out Colin
Wasn’t aware that Trump’s father is rich. To be sure I haven’t followed his ‘career’ (he makes me barf), but I thought it was the banks that bailed him out.
I know both guys have their supporters, though they differ in specifics. I was trying to get behind that. Why do they have those supporters & how do they keep the reputation intact.
Propaganda would be the obvious answer. But why has it worked so well in those two cases.
What are the sins of Donal Trump? From what I’ve seen for the last 40 years Donal Trump has been a builder.
Why would they target the Taliban, that even the government openly admitted, had nothing to do with 911? No, sorry perris, but it’s not revision. Americans openly wanted blood-anyone’s blood. Every and anybody that tried to calm anyone down, was quickly shouted down and told to STFU. That isn’t revision. I was one of the people on numerous blogs that was told just that.
Trump? He’s rich! American’s love reality tv rich people. Many people consider the Donald the ultimate success story, even though everything he’s touched eventually turned to sh*t.
I need more facts.Where do I go to fine the sins of Donal Trump?
Here’s a start
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump
there was afghanistan and there was the taliban, there was not Iraq.
who told you the taliban was not involved?, they even edmitted housing bin laden, don’t know where you got that from
never there was afghanistan and the taliban, everyone said iraq wa “taking eye off the ball”
sorry, iraq was not in the picture for any blood lust, that was completely, entirely bush and nothing else, you cannot shed blame to Americans, can’t be done
we had real targets, making believe it was american blood lust is nothing but revisionism, that blood lust was redirected to Iraq it didn’t create the Iraq confrontation
How about being so incompetent that he has taken his casino company through bankruptcy at least twice.
To say nothing about his other business bankruptcies.
I don’t see sins jumping out @ wikipedia.Maybe you could point out what the sins of Donald Trump are.I will go back to wikipedia and read closer.Today Donald Trump is the only person speeking the truth about the dammage NAFA and the free trade of the Republicans and Democrats for the last 40 years was not fair trade.I did here Donald Trump say that free and fair trade was when workers from both nations could win.The type of business Donald Trump has been in does not pay Min.wage and usely have benifits.
And he came back to the winners circle.
Colin Powell is a stronza war criminal, like all the executives in the W and Cheney’s admin.
Blaming the American people for the Iraq war is bullshit. Claiming the politicians were just reacting to the American people’s blood lust for revenge over 9/11 is utter crap. It is a well documented fact that Bush came into office with an agenda to attack Iraq.
Sorry but the level of incompetence that has a casino owner having to be bailed out by bankruptcy at least twice tells me that he doesn’t have anywhere near the skill set needed to actually run the country.
Edit: either incompetence or he’s ripping people off.
The incumbents running the USA sold the people citizens out before thay ever went to DC.Thay were corrupt before thay ever got there.Hell thay made it a carrear to sell out the USA citizens R’s And D’s.
Great Post!
It’s virtually boring to anyone who reads my posts, but then I personify and perpetuate the Native American/Chicano Construct. Therefore, I tend to focus my efforts on the Future. And with this in mind, “our” 40-Year Agenda encapsulates another “item” of serious import. Consequently, “our” advocacy includes having Congress spend a one-time allocation of taxpayer monies of $50 million and where each state will receive $1 million and done in order to establish a Monument To “dis-Honor” and located on the Mall at each State Capitol.
Subsequently, Colin Powell’s name would be located on New York’s Monument To “dis-Honor”. And take, for example, in my home state of Arizona, such notable names of ill-repute would include the late Senator Barry Goldwater, the late SCOTUS Chief Rehnquist, Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, and the current cabal of Governor Jan Brewer, Senate President Russell Pearce, State Attorney General Tom Horne, and not bereft of my sensenes, the name of our infamous Sheriff Joe would be included as well.
In closing, our grandchildren would know that during these toxic political times of these past many years, we, in the Native American and Chicano communities, did not rollover and surrender to their particular brand of Hatred and Ignorance that encapsulates these people of “dis-Honor”.

Attacking Iraq was on the neocon agenda before Bush ever illegitimately took office – Kristol, he of limp-brain fame, wrote a letter to Clinton in ’99 advising him to attack Iraq. This should be remembered given that today’s neocon junta is chomping at the bit for an attack on Iran, the same Iran that Iraq fought for, was it ten years.
Trying to follow the thought processes of the neocon-types will definitely lead to the onset of premature aging.
Yeah, Americans suck. But it’s a mistake to blame the mark for the crime of the con man. 9/11 was a false flag attack. Americans fell for it.
I think you may be underestimating the “be afraid,” “mushroom cloud,” sales job the American public got courtesy of the Bush administration and their fifth column media accomplices.
The only “sins” of Trump are of lying – of saying he made it on his own (albeit in the 80′s and early 90′s he did note the money Grandpa and Dad had – with the forever reserved tables at various name restaurants (4 Seasons for one) in NYC – and how he talked the bankers out of foreclosing when his net worth was negative – underwater in today’s world) – and for the last 10 years claiming he never had a negative net worth (that may have been true as Grandpa may have had a trust payment going to the Donald that would have been paid after the bankruptcy would have taken every other dime)..
Trump – and his brother – where given $20 million at age 21 – and his brother blew threw it and ended up working for the Donald until the second part of his inheritance came through. Donald did not build – he bought and sold. Grandpa built and his hundreds of millions hit the Donald in middle-age. The Donald told the banks the mortgage doc’s gave them the right to make him a pauper, but he was old family and could bring back the value so they would never have to see the loss in their earnings – and they bought the never show in earnings bit – and then he demanded a $13 million salary to head the operation to save his holdings – and he got it.
The boom in NYC real estate value moved building value up by several multiplies – and the unchanged loan value made him 10 billion type – about 10 times what grandpa and dad had given him.
He did eventually try his had at building (prior to that he did “renovation” – Hotels in NYC and Merve Griffins casinos – with the latter purchase conning the banks – again – as casino bond holders saw the facility go in and out of bankruptcy).
He claims the very rich in Chicago have bought into his new building “condos” where the old SunTimes building once existed (not a prestige area in those days). The current drop in value of real estate no doubt cost him a few billion – but he uses his real estate as an ATM very carefully these days.
The joke of course is his presenting himself as a master in management on such TV as the “Apprentice”. But he was obviously better at it than his brother!
I think Colin has a lock on the Captain Renault award for the year.
