In a move that is raising plenty of eyebrows, Missouri state Senator Jane Cunningham has proposed a bill that would “modify” child labor laws, eliminating the prohibition on employment of children under 14. The proposal has sparked an outcry in the state but Cunningham defends the bill, saying that it’s important to cultivate a work ethic in young people and emphasizing that kids are still prohibited from working in dangerous professions.
“It’s kind of a common sense thing,” she tells The Huffington Post. “Right now, it’s so over the top with regulations — what businesses have to do, schools have to do. Parents should be in charge, deciding on the work ethic of their children.”
Cunningham says that children are still protected by law from working in “dangerous jobs, like coal mines, with animals, with blades or involving dangerous stunts.” She says that her bill simply loosens an overly broad prohibition on child labor and would allow kids to work at movie theaters, to babysit or to cut lawns, blaming the hysteria on union “misinformation” and politics.

Here is the language in her bill (SB22):
This act modifies the child labor laws. It eliminates the prohibition on employment of children under age fourteen. Restrictions on the number of hours and restrictions on when a child may work during the day are also removed. It also repeals the requirement that a child ages fourteen or fifteen obtain a work certificate or work permit in order to be employed. Children under sixteen will also be allowed to work in any capacity in a motel, resort or hotel where sleeping accommodations are furnished. It also removes the authority of the director of the Division of Labor Standards to inspect employers who employ children and to require them to keep certain records for children they employ. It also repeals the presumption that the presence of a child in a workplace is evidence of employment.

Relieved to say the least, and I’m back to one of my favorites A Saab 900. It’s actually older than the car that blew the engine but my oh my! It’s a tight ship.

Has the niggling problems Saabs can have. They just need to quit doing things like power antennas. (Turn the radio on and get a thumping in the rear because the fucking antenna won’t go up! $140) Quite clean and is in the middle of it’s usual life span. Good price too!

Nice, all things considered. I distracted myself from a three-day nicotine withdrawal hatred with a fire-breathing motorcycle. This one is not mine, but VERY similar.

I’ve been saying this for years: it was a deliberate society-altering push in the 70s to convince American women that outside the home work was more fun than being a housewife–the goal to have both parents working to maximize income, then radically raise the cost of living and stagnate wages so, even with both working, they could barely manage to get by. Then they would repeal child-labor laws to tempt stressed families to force their underaged kids to take jobs.

So, in the next decade, both Mom & Dad and the kids will be working, inflation and cheap wages, however, will continue to delute the extra earnings of the cheap and unregulated child labor market.

God, I love the V65. The 45 was a very capable machine, but that 65 is just more fun than the law allows. Speaking of, some lunatic took a V65 engine, shoehorned it into a V45 frame, and filmed this terrifying ride somewhere in England.

Not quite that version, but it is the 2 door hatchback. Basic model, but why would they included a power antenna and leave out cruise control?

Ok, Sister Suzie, here comes the Norske report on Madison. I’m still recoverin from 18 hours on the ground there Tuesday with 7 hours in a fuckin bus but I got a couple a reports from some of our “organizer” people on the ground there this evening…I’ll try and break up the comments so I don’t take up too much space all at one time.

So…first of all I am gunna use the analogy of Cairo and 1968 to frame my experience. The ride down and back was in a full coach bus with half and half state university students and faculty/staff from UW River Falls. The students all understand not only what the governor’s proposal would mean to them, education and the economy goin forward but they also understand that the “budget crisis” in the state is a fraud. Also, some of the faculty are folks who are moderate to conservative who were very uncomfortable, for awhile at least, about what was happening because they were still convinced that there was a “crisis” but they almost felt guilty about comin’ down to protest because somehow they saw it as “selfish” – until they spent 12 hours learning what they learned on the ground in Madison. The conversations on the trip back were quite different from those goin down.

So we had an interestin’ mix that reflected the composition of the anti-war movement of college campuses as I experienced it from 1968-1975…until we got to Madison!! We got off the bus at 9:00AM and were immediately surrounded by union workers including teamsters, AFL-CIO,AFSCME and firefighters (yes, Firepups, firefuckinfighters!!!…I will tell you a story about a platoon of ‘em that marched in down Washington Ave just after noon but that’s for later). This is important because, for those of you young Firepups, one of the slogans of the SDS, socialists, commies and just plain hippies was “worker-student alliance” but the reason that the anti-war movement took so long to end the war and failed to radicalize national politics goin forward was that the union hard hats were used as thugs and protest “strikebreakers” and were splintered off from the Democratic Party first by Nixon and then by Reagan. That is NOT happening in Madison today and in fact it was/is the union folks who were teachin’ the middle-aged and middleclass college faculty what is really happenin’ to their lives outside the academic bubble.

By 1:00PM there were 5,000 inside the rotunda of the capitol and 17,000 outside…NOT the 10-15,000 that you have heard on Ed Schultz and Rachel Maddow. The union organizers and a bunch of Madison students who were Democratic Party volunteers for Tammy Baldwin and Rus Feingold (what a treat those kids are!!) actually were able to work the capitol and had a very tight game plan for meetin’ with targeted officials. I saw a whole lot of Repofascist elected officials and staff runnin around lookin like they had seen the ghost of John Brown or Joe Hill.

I’ll stop here for the moment with just this last observation: though I think that the best thing we can hope for is that they pull the bill and wait for the smoke to clear and I don’t think that is gunna happen I DID tell all the young organizers and anyone else who would listen that even if we lost and the bill is passed intact, we have NOT lost and in fact this is the first skirmish in the march to Charlotte in 2012. Russ Feingold is gunna be able ta put an umbrella over the resistance in Wisconsin and already the fascists have done what Democratic Party activists haven’t been able ta do for 40 years and that is unify the public and industrial unions and put ‘em back together with what is left of the Democratic zparyty in the state of Wisconsin. Win or lose, Skippy Walker is toast and politics in this state has changed almost overnight.

KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, AND REMEMBER THAT THERE IS NO COMPROMSIN’ WITH FASCISTS!!

Union workers will sue over their mandated benefit cuts when not applied equally to police and fire-fighters.

I’ve dealt with federal funds in local government and stipulations for spending them include hiring at union rates and under union bargaining rules. Federal funds (for highways) for certain public employees (say bus drivers)would have to be returned to the Fed government if not used properly, causing Fucktard Walker to enlarge the State deficit trying to pay back $millions.

I may have missed this, but the Minnesota Republicans want to repeal fair pay for women.
