Chilly tonight, but a warm-up is on the way; 50′s and even 60′s this coming week! Hopefully the last of the snow left over from “Commutageddon” on Jan 26th will melt away…

Hiya peeps, how’s the baby, Suz?

hallooo kelly — how’s denver tonight?
yeah it was!
There’s a girl at work whom I don’t know very well, on another shift. I was on her interview panel when she was in the hiring process last summer. Anyway, she is from Egypt and the next time I see her I want to ask her how she feels about what has transpired.
aloha tut — sure did — picked up 1.21 inches today and my strongest sustained wind was 32.2mph. how’s paradise tonight?
Warm now! 62 tomorrow. Weird!
bet she has an interesting perspective on it for sure ll. how long has she been here?
that’s colorado for ya :) from blizzard and below zero to 60′s in just a few days…
Not sure actually, but I remember during the interview panel she speaks perfect English with no accent. And she’s young, 20′s, so obviously she’s known nothing else but Mubarak during her lifetime. I’ll see her Monday evening and try to get her perspective :-)
Never saw that before. It’s mesmerizing. Thanks.
hey gw — how ya doing tonight?
We are still recovering from the freakin’ freeze here. It is supposed to be really nice tomorrow.
Surprisingly dry, considering what’s brewing nearby… Btw, I also see what’s hitting ya too…!
wow — its gonna continue to hit me sun and mon too…. it swings south and then back north again.
yay! how did your pipes fair?
That ‘Pineapple Express’ has been a bullet train of late, eh…? ;-)
Been listening to a lot of country lately, and this guy knocks me out — what a voice:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU6SWRWGrlk
its been unusually sunny warm and dry up here so its nice to have a return to the rainy season
The Egyptian American woman I know happened to be in Egypt with her Mom (who lives in Chicago) when the uprising started. They were very worried about leaving and being able to get out. Mom’s back in Chicago and the woman I know is visiting in London. Still haven’t had any communication since she left. I just heard that she was able to get out.
Hi Suz, bg, LL and everyone. Love Pixie and Dixie.
yikes — i remember your concern when the uprising first started about your friend. good to hear they got out
Thawing. It’s supposed to go up to the 70′s for the rest of the week.
hi gw, I’m glad she was able to get out — and hopefully you’ll hear back from her soon :-)
hey margot — glad ya liked it. how’s ohio tonight?
hey Margot! :-)
I had a few small problems, overall nothing crazy. But trying to get a plumber for anything has been hell. They have been working their asses day and night for the last few weeks.
How you doin’ Suz?
i bet they are swamped — ya’ll just don’t get that kinda cold down there….
Speaking of which, any word yet from Ruth Calvo…? I haven’t seen any of her posts since she announced her visit to Cairo, before the tumult…! 8-(
i’m doing well thanks gw. token is snoozing next to the fire and bailey cat is curled up in the corner of the sofa.
yes, i was worried about her. now i can just worry about the egyptian army. less personal, more far reaching.
Forgive/forget the ad up front on this youtube clip
Just Think Aunt Toby…
sounds quite homey. good on ya!
she was in the comments yesterday tut. as far as i know, all is well.
Whassup firekittens?
hahahahaha
The cold plus no gas for heat, those are the people who really had problems. At least we had heat everywhere I worry about. I had some frozen pipes, but nothing busted. I had a flood on a roof the other day, we used swamp cooler pumps to pump the water off the roof. I was able to fix that leak, but it took a few hours to pump the water off.
I was worried about the feral cats, but they seemed to manage the cold OK too.
hey thatguy — how ya doing tonight?
and ruth had an art diary up today tut
sounds like you got off lucky bg. and ya for the cats!!!
/mini rant
On Friday I was working a little overtime when the news broke that Mubarak was out. In the section I was working, the tv had been tuned to The Price Is Right (gak) when CBS news broke in with a special report. I commandeered the remote and switched to MSNBC to watch their coverage, and the people in the section with me just couldn’t have cared less about what was going on.
I know people have preferences, and their own choices, but to go through life being uninformed or underinformed just kinda baffles me.
/endrant
knock on wood. I will be enjoying the warmer weather this week, that’s for sure.
Kewl…! I hope she’ll write about her trip…! ;-)
Doing ok, getting sleepy a lot earlier than list night – which is dandy. Hank and Kaz are growing like weeds. A wonderful pair of kittens.
Hey, Margot. Howz it w/you?
Aloha, TG…!
Hello all Firedogs!
LLN even later tonight for me. Nice dinner party for MrCE, who turned 60 earlier tonight.
it was nice while we had it too. i got up to 62 thursday — all that sunshine made my eyes hurt *laughing* guess i’d gotten used to the overcast
“Despair is a narcotic. It lulls the mind into indifference.”__Charlie Chaplin
aw, kittens — I luvz them :-)
got any new pix of the little guys — bet they ain’t so little anymore
hey ce — how are ya feeling?
THe vast majority of people don’t give a thought to much of anything beyond what beer they’re buying that night. Being a thinking person is often a recipe for a lot of misery in life…because you see the wrong and can’t do crap about it and it’s frustrating. But you have to learn to let it go, as well as letting people go. It happens.
hey robert — how’s southern pa tonight?
Spot on.
I’ll shoot some tomorrow. No, they are not tiny KITNZ any more. They are BIG boys, esp Hank.
hippo birdies two ewes
hippo birdies two ewes
hippo birdies deer mr ce
hippo birdies two ewes
….. and mini s’mores…..
You are exactly right!
Not south enough….
Two orange kitnz. Very adorable.
gotta friend down in la who is looking at getting an orange kitty
hiya margot, CT
happy birthday to MrCE! Hi Chris!
Orange kittehs are so cool, very friendly and laid back in my experience. At my vet’s office there’s a live-in orange tomcat named Jerry, and he is such a nice guy.
we had orange kitty after orange kitty when i was growing up. for whatever reason, they were all serially named figaro.
Tell your friend to get two – so the kitten has a pal. That’s why we adopted two. Well that and we could NOT leave Kaz behind.
Hi all – Joe Bageant update in case nobody’s posted it
Boy I hope his body mends and he keeps writing his extraordinarily necessary essays .. doubtless he’ll figure out how to add this harrowing experience to his wisdom
years ago a friend of mine moved down the block to a bigger house from where he used to live as he got more prosperous and his family got bigger. he rented me the smaller house and the huuuuuuge orange cat wasn’t so sure he was going to make the move. i loved that. he was seriously affectionate, purred reallly loud and drooled. he and i were both in heaven.
I wish I could have another kitteh in the house, but when I adopted my Suze the rescue people told me that she had to be the only cat in the house; she never got along with other cats. Pity, because she’s so friendly with humans you’d think she’d be okay with another kitteh…
she had two cats and they both ended up passing with a rare cancer within a year’s time. she got miss g after the first one passed and just had no interest in another cat until she saw a pic of an orange kittah a friend sent her. she’s not sure if its a him or a her but she’s real drawn to it. and miss g could certainly use a playmate.
The Gazans only have one request of the Egyptians, LL…
But we have one request: Open the Rafah crossing.
hey sharkbabe — how ya doing tonight?
Rather beat up — got through the day yesterday with aspirin, and did get out the ice packs last night (more LLN). Worked like a beast today getting the dinner ready, and really didn’t have any pain, or painkillers all day. Sore tonight though. Kept me from eating too much!
bailey cat is too skittish to be around other cats. she’s really blossomed now that my landlady took her cats with her to portland. she’s a lot less skittish about being outside now
Happy B’day to the Mister…! ;-)
you are gonna be sore for several days but the worst is behind ya. keep icing and that will be a lotta help. if the dds said it was ok, rinse with warm salt water, gently of course, to help sooth your sore spots
Nice diary CT, recc’d!
Aloha, PPD…!
Oh that’s good, she can explore her territory and broaden her little horizons :-)
Warming up nicely here, too. I read somewhere that spring will come 4 weeks after you smell the first skunk. Never heard that before, have you?
Thanks CT! It was gentle, full of great food and lots of candlelight. I even bought balloons and dollar store banners. Dinner for 8 — good Irish music and a roaring fire.
We have a main coon named Merlin. He climbs in bed only after I get under the covers (pestering me until I do)and falls asleep on my chest. He snores….
Hi PPD
happy lucky 100 margot!!!
He did say, rinse with salt water. And since I neti pot — salt all there for the using. Must get ice, now.
I have a desperate love affair with orange kittehs. Mr. Sadness, who lives with me, I adore, but he’s a wild one, and I can’t touch him. I have caught him a few times, but he is so frightened. He keeps his distance, and I keep trying to get him to give the fear up. I am in heaven if he will get on the bed with me in it.
The orange ones are special, for sure.
Mahalo, LL…! *g*
Nobody loves me but my mother…and she could be jivin’ too
this spring will be lotsa fun — she didn’t spend much time outside since she was the ‘new cat’ and lowest on the totem pole. i expect she’s be like she was at the cabin and coming home as the sun sets to eat
RA-coon?
I had my first hairball of the season today, and I figured that means spring will be here sooner or later. Never heard the one about the skunk.
cute….
That’s a great song!
heh — out on the prowl!
like you do
A little BB will do you no harm :-)
Our Elvis, the big orange, left us a few years ago. We miss him so much. He loved everyone in the neighborhood! Would throw himself down on the sidewalk begging for a belly rub.
Hey guys! We had an adventure today.
Ron feel out of the shower this morning-backwards. I mean, all the way. He took the shower curtain, liner, and rod with him. I swear, he is the luckiest man on the planet today. He wedged himself between the toilet and the sink. There is only about ten inches of space for his head to fit in there. I heard this big bam and ran to the bathroom but the door was shut. I couldn’t open it cause his big Slovak body was in the way and he was non-responsive for about five more seconds. It took him awhile to get up. Tonight he is really, really, sore.
Geez. forkin’ scary.
good enough, thx – just hangin with the kitties, gettin sleepy, my domestic partner always has to work late as hell on weekends (manages a large event hall) so she’ll be home at some point .. the usual .. life’s ok except for my hatred of existence :)
btw thx for all you do at this place .. nobody should take you for granted
He never gets old ;)
maine coon cats
Being a cat lover that has had a few cats over the years, I really want my next cat to be a Maine Coon… I’ve heard so much about them… The snoring would only blend in with the Better Half’s…! ;-)
lawd lawd, did she ever have some pipes…don’t hear much about her these days, hopefully she’s gotten herself back on track
Dayam, Senator. That is freakin’ frightening.
fuck — dayam mary did he slip?
Tucker is a Maine Coon kittah. He just tried to beat up The Little Kittah. He cannot get used to a new feline in the house.
jayzus! thank gods for happy outcomes. even sore ones.
wow! send him my love, please and give him some very gentle hugs and kisses from me. are you still freaked out?
hey Sharkbabe, do you live in the DC area by chance, or am I misremembering?
Suze! Pups!
It was above freezing today in Minnesnowta, i was blissed out! Didn’t bother to zip my jacket when i went out because it was up to 36 frikkin degrees! John Scalzi summed up my current feelings about snow in this blog post.
LoudounLib … do you think your work acquaintance would let you do a diary on her perspective (or maybe even write one herself)?
i heard she’s off the wagon again. i love this duo she did with mary j blige
Look kinda evil, don’t they?
omg mary, I’m glad Ron is okay!
That is scary, Mary…! Thank goodness he’s only sore…! *g*
hey ndfg — such good news! how ya doing tonight?
Yea. He has peripheral neuropathy in his feet. He can’t feel them so he tends to slip in the tub. We had some of those strips on the bottom of the tub but many of them had come off. Today I went and bought a special liner for it.
they don’t take no shit from no body or thing…
god, that cat is gorgeous! i never heard of them before. didn’t know what to make of robt talking about his coon.
If I haven’t told you already, in my imaginary perfect band, you are my bass player.
hey ndfg! I’ll see how it goes when I’m able to talk with her next week, and see if she’s receptive to the idea (which is a great one!)
lardy.. he’s gonna be needing some ice packs for sure…. frozen peas work really well
Oferchrissake is he OK?
I wasn’t really freaked out until much later. I had to go searching for pain killers from the neighbors for him tonite. Found some.
well just drivin by, really – night everybody
aw thanks sharkbabe…. i still pinch myself about how lucky i have — i still can’t believe jane lets me play backstage and host.
*heh* Just the way I like my Pussy-cats…! ;-)
He truly is the luckest dude on the planet today. An inch in either direction and he could have killed himself. I think the shower curtain bundled him up just enough to cushion him.
I can’t tell you the number of times The Sweety has climbed the stairs and Merlin galluped after her, takes a leap and bites her ass.
Never tried that with me, though….
Funny (to those of us who had one inch of snow for one day)! I remember feeling that way about rain when I lived in Oregon. I’d wake up yelling every morning.
minus 12 F here this morning. Cold through the weekend, but it is supposed to warm up.
My student Eric and I made a “marching machine” today. It is for Morton Gould’s Symphony.
Here’s my youtube of the result.
Here is my Maine Coon. I have shown this pic before.
My friend has one, and old Maine Coon, 14 years old. Lately he has taken to trilling in the bathroom at 3:00 almost every night!
OMG. that is scary stuff … my old roommate had a fall like that, but in the garage, wedged himself in good. I hope Ron is ok, no need for stitches, no dislocated shoulder or anything.
I think I would have been pretty freaked out. Hugs to you both.
hey et — that’s way cool dood
he’s sorta orangish even :)
Glad for both of you, Mary Mc! That is just too damn scary!
Today is the 2nd anniversary of when my Dad died. I thought I would just dip my toes back in the water tonight, nice to see everyone. I’m kinda pooped.
LM is snoozing, I think, so I’m off to dreamland myself.
take care everyone, and thanks for being the super hostess of LLN, Suz!
Hmmm.
We’re supposed to place it on a 4′ x 4′ piece of 1/2″ plywood on top of a big steel garbage can to get the right reverberation.
Cheers Loudoun L – I live in Indian Head MD, work at Lib of Congress – have lived all over MD DC VA – so yep, sort of a lifer here :)
g’nite bg
Doesn’t look like much, does it…
yep
Kelly, stop trying to make me marry you .. it won’t work .. we’re both queer, remember?
:)
sorta like a hybrid of a steel drum like is used in the carribean?
Boots never collide on a surface exactly simultaneously – needs a bit of “clackiness” but asymmetrically. Tough job for an instrument!
A little Pogues for you all, bejaysus…
Kelly, hey!
cheers neighbor, I’m out here in Loudoun County VA :-)
Love ya, but we’ll never do it. Meanwhile…
FUCK! YEAH!
Ma. Chere. !!!
Here are some new pics of Tucker. Click through to see them all. He js huge.
nite bg
gnite bg. i know you miss your dad. have sweet dreams.
Stuck in the Middle
I am trying to stop watching tv and read more. This weekend I have a new book: Versailles – A biography of a Palace.
oops. pressed submit too soon.
((((((bg)))))
Hey Margot!
Steel drums are tuned to pitches. This is plain old untuned percussion in a very primitive way. Morton Gould calls for it in his West Point Symphony, which we’ll be performing in April.
When you get to the Chapter about Chuck Todd – call me. We could vomit together. (heh.)
love his monorail cat look… bailey does that one when she’s not curled up into a ball
how cool…. i can’t wait to hear yours
Heh, heh, will do! What a twerp.
I need to do that, too. I used to read constantly. Books, I mean. But when I started working on the computer I stopped reading. Plus, I attempted to write a book and got about 50,000 words done. After that I could see when writers were taking the easy way out. I became much more picky.
isn’t chuck todd the dood that tweeted that snow wasn’t a big deal — right before snowzilla hit the east coast last year?
Oi! Saturday night
Hi Chris! Hope you’re feeling better.
Last song of the night, then I gotta split:
Fist City
Gotta love Loretta and her drinkin’ and fightin’ songs, and that Kentucky accent when she threatens to lift her rival by the “har of the head”!
Time for me to turn in. Nite all.
50,000 words is very impressive. Did you finish the book? Was it fiction or nonfiction?
that be the same ‘twerp’ tweeting…!
hey kris — how ya doing tonight?
g’nite gw
I used to be a huge fiction reader. Since 911, I can’t get interested in anything that is not real. I’m constantly reading social history and city biography. My favorite book this year: “The Discovery of France A Historical Geography from the French Revolution to the First World War” by Graham Robb.
oi! Sunday morning here ;-)
Good. Video-gaming my life away. You?
ET – why not make the percussion section do some sort of drum trill, like a paradidddle on a tom, or whatever, instead of making a new instrument?
Although I can see the value in making a “marching” instrument. Curious.
sweet dreams gw!
It’s not a new day if you haven’t slept!
kd and roseanne covering loretta
mr not weather *spitting*
i’m hanging in. when’s the big move?
It was fiction. I took me a year. I wrote everyday for about four hours. It was about a woman who was widowed three times before the age of 55. She was an art professor in Memphis. She found out her 3rd husband had cheated on her. She went to the cemetery and ran his grave stone over with her car and got taken to jail for reckless driving and grave desecration. That was the first chapter.
I totally understand that.
happy lucky 200 senator!!!
true! heading that way shortly though. We east coasters kinda poop out early at LLN.
oh that is sweet!
oh Lardy! I wasn’t even trying.
Did you finish the novel?
June. I wish it were sooner, but wifey’s gotta finish a statistics class before she can transfer to the University.
thought ya would like it — from 88 iirc
night all and thanks Suz! Got a big day ahead Sunday, plenty of loafing in mind ;-)
so video games until she does :)
g’nite ll
Now that is fucking awesome!
And I have to turn off the television. Totally. Until Keith come on Current Channel.
No. I ran out of time. I had to figure out a way to earn a living. I had money for about ten years and spent all of my time making art and writing. Well, I learned graphic design, too. I found I couldn’t write and do anything else. Hard work.
mary, i like your main character already. why did you stop writing?
Me too! Lots of papers and snoozing.
Do you still have the manuscript?
never mind… didn’t see your reply to robert
MSNBC is not worth watching anymore at all. never. nada.
i watch rachel … but only rachel
yes, somewhere. I outgrew the story though.
Agreed. Done, over and out.
I like Rachel, too.
I watch Rachel bits on FDL!
Who is Rachel Bits?
Yes, but a lot of readers may have been denied the opportunity to learn by reading your novel on how to get over it.
Would you be willing to email me the first chapter for at least one reader’s opinion?
bits of rachel….as in the rachel maddow show
I’m going to pop in at My FDL to see Saturday Art, and then go to sleep. See you all tomorrow, well, today.
Oh! Thanks Suzanne!
g’nite ce
Sure. I don’t know if I have the computer files though. I know I have a cd with it and several hard copies.
Sleep tight, see you later.
email to xxx@xxx . I’d love to get a peek at it.
*edited per request*
It may take me a while to find the files.
let me know when ya’ll are ready for me to zap that email addy
Just skimming here before jumping into things but a professionally installed grab bar is mandatory ASAP. Don’t f around with relying on just a non-slip surface, it is not sufficient. Websites for recommended grab bar placements for institutional settings should give some ideas as to what might work best.
Morning everyone.
Take your time. But when you send that first chapter, please send it as an attachment file, so the formatting is preserved.
hey nonq — how ya doing tonight?
Just back from an errand. The composer calls for the “marching machine” and even describes how to build it. The snare drums are already doing what you describe. I think it will sound cool on the plywood on top of the garbage pail.
Thanks!
Did you write down my email address so Suzanne can zap my post?
robert i think she got it so i’ve zapped it
Sure did. I emailed you, too
Way late to this party, but if LL is still here . .
I LOVE that song. There’s a killer bluegrass country version of it by bluegrass gal Melanie Cannon . . she and her band just tear it up.
What great lyrics!
*G*
hey larue — how’s sac tonight?
Zap it, Suzanne, please. I just got the senator’s email response.
Great. I’ll be bidding you all my goodnight. I got some reading to do.
tis zapped
g’nite robert
Nice, should be great with the resonators. Have you ever seen/heard stuff by Harry Partch, worth investigating. Actually saw him in Chicago through connections to an art community near my home in the early seventies.
Did a presentation for early elementary students demonstrating strings and resonance. A portable fingerboard placed on a bed pillow will amplify the vibrated strings. Kids had a blast with a fretless fingerboard.
Good thanks, sipping sleepy time and heading to bed soon. As ndfg mentioned we got a break in the temps Saturday.
heading to dreamland, niters.
Nice.
I was just playing with frozen cauliflower. (Stupid, I know, but I was re-arranging my freezer contents.)
If one drops the frozen bag, it’s very “marchy” sounding. Just an observation.
nice :) got my first measurable rain since 1/21 today. twas a nice change
We played with our
fooddrum machine too.The frozen spinach didn’t cut it.
Peas were marginal.
Root vegetables were the UTMOST!
Evening pups – just a drive-by.
We may hit 70 this week – 60s fer sure. Bliss!
hey sunny — sounds wonderful! how ya doing tonight?
You could make a drum machine out of frozen beets. It would work until they thawed.
’bout time for me to turn back into a pumpkin folks. thanks for letting me hang out with ya tonight.
a little birdie told me that tut has something special planned for ya tomorrow night…. hope to see ya then
g’nite all
Aloha, Suz…! Pleasant dreams…!
Doing well.
Met with the painter today and picked up good vibes. Cat wasn’t happy but he don’t get no vote.
Somehow you all are just missing the BEET’S
