Three months ago in this space, I wrote about Wisconsin governor-elect Scott Walker, who was showboating by making bogus demands and proclamations even though he was still two months from being inaugurated.
It’s probably no surprise that actually taking office hasn’t diminished Walker’s ambitions (via TPMDC):
In an interview with the Associated Press, Scott Walker proposed stripping nearly all government workers of their collective bargaining rights…. Under his plan, which he’ll include in his forthcoming budget proposal, most state workers would no longer be able to negotiate for better pensions or health benefits or anything other than higher salaries, which couldn’t rise at a quicker pace than the Consumer Price Index.
… He also says this plan is non-negotiable — as in, he’s cut off negotiations with prison guards, teachers and other state workers.
Walker’s budget proposal would also reduce employees’ benefits by mandating substantially higher contributions, even though state workers accepted below-private-sector wages in exchange for those benefits in previous labor talks.
And remember what I said about showboating? The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel adds:
The governor also said the National Guard is at the ready to take control of state prisons if correctional officers strike or take job actions. No union official has endorsed such a job action, but Walker said he was prepared for any contingency.
The Capitol news conference where Walker announced his plan had unusually high security, with four Capitol police offers stationed outside of it and checking on who was attending the event.
This self-orchestrated air of crisis is simply the Republican governor’s way of introducing the shock doctrine concept to state government. Meanwhile, with much less fanfare, Walker is hurriedly pushing though other extreme elements of the right-wing agenda, from eliminating a money-saving birth control program to already-signed legislation “making it harder to sue businesses for harmful products and nursing homes for abuse and neglect, while another bill dismantled the state Department of Commerce, leaving the exact new whereabouts of numerous agencies and programs still unknown.”
Consider it a preview of the GOP will do if they get a grip again on all three branches of the federal government.

Scott Walker is an asshole with a capital A-S-S-H-O-L-E.
*heh* I’ll betcha those Guardsmen will cost more…! ;-)
Scott Wanker is an ideologue, not a genius.
Fucking fascist.
The last commenter in my diary seems to think America will need someone to light themselves on fire in front of the White House to spark a revolution. FML.

Serious question. What has happened to Wisconsin? The state that has such an impressive history of progressivism and justice for labor? It has seemed so implausible for Russ Feingold to have lost his seat and now this obvious kook governor.
Agreed. Evening.
Sure, the GOP will happily and speedily do this once Obama and the Democrats throw the election next year. Who here had any doubt that they will? But Obama and the Democrats are already in the process of implementing these and other extreme right-wing policies. This is why it is imperative that the Left in this country put up a strong left-wing candidate to challenge the duopoly.
What has happened is corporate graft has reached every corner of our nation.
When will We have an Egyptian event?? These Right Wing Crazies will destroy our country, and all in the name of killing Government and allowing Corporations to Rape the public of everything including their dignity..
GOP shock troops = Like Mubarak’s thugs. Same mentality.
Exactly my thought. Are the guardsmen giving up their retirement or healthcare? Hell no. Walker and what army?
But the voters seem to have had all the education level and the progressive traditions sucked from their brains. It is hard to believe corporate money and greed can do all that.
Is that legal?
as horrible as this kind of news is (and being repeated everywhere), in another way it might be good. rightwing republicans and “business freindly” democrats like biden, clinton and obama seem to be disconnected from reality. they can push the shock doctrine, and they will hurt lots of people, but those people and thier increasingly desparate need arent going to dissapear. state county and city workers in states not named New York , are really all thats filling out the American middle class. the private sector, as far as incomes are concerned, is not going to pick up the slack. As those workers are increasingly abused and abandoned, they are forced to the left.that stooge can threaten the workers of Wisconsin with destitution (and the National Gaurd), but that only creates more pressure.
The voters have been terrorized. Plain and simple. People in power jump up and yell “Booga! Booga!” and everyone cowers.
That and also they have been so turned against the minorities and the poor that they will put up with losing income and safety nets as long as they can believe those “others” aren’t getting anything for free.
Can we all just go down to the WH tomorrow and set ourselves on fire?
A sort of reverse ‘Keeping up with the Jonses’, eh…? If I’m hurting, they need to hurt more…?
it would be ignored as the act of an isolated troubled person… but peaceful crowds the size of those in tahrir square might get their attention
My sorrow exactly,..what has happened to Wis.? I have no answer and neither do my relatives in Wis. It seems like a coup has been pulled in Union Town, USA.
Isn’t that what sparked the revolt in Tunisia? A kid setting himself on fire?
You first…!/s ;-)
I’m deeply afraid of burning to death. Can I use pills?
Sure was…! He did die btw…!
Gosh, you spell pretty ;)
Hard to believe anyone can be against regulation/protection for nursing homes….talk about harming grandma. I was going to say family members rich and poor end up in NH….that will not be true, however, if they cut back on Medicaid.
yup, and that is what lead to the tunisian president abdicating which then encouraged the egyptian revolt.
tis sad that a person doing that in tunisia created more of an uproar there than would a person doing the same here — our media is well trained in their role as pravda
It’s certainly the case here in the old Confederacy, but it’s been that way for a long time. I really thought Wisconsiners were smarter and kinder. The nation really is becoming overcome by hatred. It seems the motivation for so many now is not to seek the good life but to be certain the groups they hate don’e have a chance. It’s depressing if not suicidal.
Thanks for listening.
I don’t know if we can hope for such a thing without a massive wave of Egyptian immigrants.
We’ll wear fire suits. It’s a symbolic gesture.
We could import them. We import everything else.
I bought you surreal estate

you said that I could stay

that day became a year

aeroplanes and crashing cars

Also, I don’t like to be critical of peoples’ physical appearances,..but Scott’s face is so asymmetrical that he looks like an alien who didn’t pull his Human mask on properly.
Yes it is a sorrow. As I indicated above, you might expect it here in the deep south but Wisconsin!
Not at all. Regulation and protection get in the way of obscene profiteering, and that’s all the Republicans, most Democrats, and much of the nursing home industry care about.
You may just be onto something.
A-yep. It’s bad enough that they already have the House.
Bring telescopes and read the stars

Um, can I point out that the GOP does have a grip – one might say even a death-grip – on all three branches of the federal government.
Does China make Egyptians?

Yes, but you have to sing protests songs and roast marshmallows.

Ah, Kris, we’d only get them as far as Poland and Bulgaria [we have made in USA re-education camps in Bulgaria?]. Importing requires papers.
Marshmallows and a stick.
And Weiners. Don’t forget the weiners, for the love of God.
And who will do the Guardsmen’s jobs while they are called up?
if we make it cocktail weinies, we may even attract a villager or two
So, God loves weiners? Hadn’t heard….
Then I vote for footlongs.

I wish I was an important state employee in WI right now, just so I could quit & walk at the moment Walker gets his way. (“walk” & “Walkwer”, heh heh)
The man who wore the heartache
that lived on the stairs
passed me in the night
whistling “memories of you”
I stared-too frightened to move’
for fear my eyes shone a light
on the darkness he drew like a cloak
all around his shoulders
and the church
on the corner
marked the time for the mother
who was giving birth to a child across the hall
and I waited
half in anger-half in sadness
for an answer
to the call for help I had written on the wall
and the rain
fell like jewels
on the heads of all the fools
who wandered crazed
with their souls ablaze for me
and the blessing of the hour
was the twilight
and the tower
with it’s golden bell
from the bottom of the sea
and the moon
through the window
marked the bedroom where lovers slumbered
making silver dancers of the dust beneath the bed
and I waited
for a moment
in the love light
crystal gazing
listening to their hearts and the changing of their breath
Marg, are you ok? Nothing against poetry, but it’s a bit grim and I do worry about you…
Maybe grim but I like it. :)
Nothing wrong with grim… Just checking girlfriend : )
Thanks for the concern but I’m fine. It’s when I stop caring about music and poetry when you have to worry. Besides, it’s not my work. My stuff is grimmer.
Thanks for the Be Bop Deluxe/Bill Nelson. Here’s a video for Surreal Estate. Didja notice the strange percussion effects? It was recorded at a French Chateau & the drummer is playing pots, pans & tuned wine bottles all looted from the kitchen…. Also here’s Banal, probably his last true guitar solo.
Sh*t, meant “Walker”….
Good to know, whenever I need something for a gray day I’ll be sure to ask you first ; )
Night Marg.
I’m hip! Train whistles, pots and pans, bottles, cowbells and le voom-voom whistlers. Yay! Another Deluxe fan!
more cowbell!
more cowbell
Don’t forget: an awful lot of Democrats (including Andy Dillon, the Speaker of the Michigan House last year) pandered to low-information voters by coming out for cutbacks in state employees’ health and retirement benefits. Dillon was honest–or arrogant–enough to write that the idea would appeal to voters who’ve worked in the private sector and seen their wages and benefits shrink. Misery loves company.
doG loves weiners.
Yep I have that one too.
Yeah, we’re into that in Wa. state. Misery loves company. The Company loves misery.
Why haven’t I seen darms around much? We have a whole lot in common. Tech skills but no job. Expired UI and best of all, Bebop Deluxe! We’re even very close to the same age.
And obama can be thanked. The midwest was especially ticked at him and the congress and senate that went along with him even after making promises to their constituents.
Maybe they’ve terrorized themselves, retreating into a world of reality TV, celebrity gossip, and Fox “News” rather than take a critical look at what’s been happening around them. A depressingly high percentage of people I’ve run into have basically put their brains into cold storage and lost the ticket needed to retrieve them.
Don’t forget that Wisconsin sent ‘Tail Gunner” Joe McCarthy to represent its interests in the Senate.
Walker sounds like a Middle Eastern despot – is there a rumor he’s a radical Muslim; there is now, so per Cokie’s law, “it’s out there” – who is so determined to assume dictatorial powers that he will manufacture a crisis in order to assert them. That’s much easier than managing a real crisis that would publicly test his metal.
What might most annoy Mr. Walker is that he’s not John Gault, but an ordinary civil servant on a short term contract. His job is even less secure than the teachers and state bureaucrats whose jobs, livelihoods, security and well-being he’s already threatened for no reason beyond personal ambition.
Mr. Walker’s threatening theatrics seem designed to distract attention from what he’s been hired to do, and whether he can or will do it. His job is to manage public resources in order to further public ends, not his own ambitions. If ever there was a need to recall a state governor, Mr. Walker would be a prime candidate: he’s failed before he began.
Der Speigel http://www.spiegel.de/international/ The West Loses Its Favorite Tyrant
Just so apt a description.
Does the public ever tire of governors who start running for president before they start or finish their own terms as governor?
Yes but the fucking press never does.
No. Neither do they tire of public officials whose only qualification for office is that a close relative held the same office.
I filled out a stupid poll today. I say stupid for a couple of reasons: First, it seemed designed to elicit specific responses, like it was designed to get teabagger approved results and second, because it asked my religion and when I said “atheist”, the next screen that came up was “how often do you attend religious services” and the one after that wanted to know how important religious services were to me. Come on. I can see that sort of thing back in the days of polls printed on paper but this one was entirely electronic.
That’s true. Why do we even have to know Liz Cheney exists? Or Meghan McCain? Or Bristol fucking Palin?
Man! This is one dead late night thread. Oya all! :)
No, that’s what makes them exciting governors. The aura of future stardom. They’re not just some losers who’ll settle for running some little fucking state. They’ve got dreams!
g’nite margaret
Hey! Just in at this late hour.
Interesting comment… buried in bullshit or working to many hours to watch/listen.
Yup
Nope. Many people will think, “great, less job competition for me.”
???? I been here off and on about 10+ as a lurker, 6+ as an occasional commenter (Yeah, I remember when FDL was a solo gig). 38 f*cking years as an etech, 23 years as a pwb designer, almost 3 years as a worthless unemployable POS as tech work has left Austin & I don’t wanna deliver pizzas or sell used cars…. I prefer Bill Nelson’s solo work to BeBop DeLuxe and really wished his “Red Noise” band had been a success, bought the vinyl when it first came out plus my copy of “Banal” was in his two disk 7″ collection. (also bought when new) Loved his work on David Sylvian’s “Gone To Earth” (along w/Fripp’s, & ‘BTW”, the vinyl has four more (BN) tracks than the CD). BTW I’m now playing bass in a 13th Floor Elevators cover band….
Yes, but more like Stepping on the Joneses(tm).
OT– CPAC: conservative video site PJTV interviews Sarah Palin impersonator (Slate.Com, Feb. 11):
What on earth has happened to Wisconsin???
Okay, back in the 50s they had McCarthy, but they’ve had good Representatives, Senators, governors.
What happened? How and why did they go so crazy?
I want to see lots and lots more Palin impersonators. In a weeks time nobody could tell who was who.
The repuke union haters are now more scared shitless than ever after seeing what the unions in Egypt were instrumental in accomplishing. I hope Scott walker shits in bed and dies with a hardon.
Obviously Republicans have bought the Libertarian/Tea Party mantra to simply smash government. Sure glad I don’t live in Wisconsin. Happy to live in my West Coast State.
What has happened in Wisconsin is this: Voters grew tired of a government out of touch with concerns of the citizenry where “tax and spend” has been the mantra. It became one of the least favorable places in the country for businesses to locate (and, of course, to expand or even stay).
So, in the case of Walker, they put in place a guy who has a reputation (having been the CEO of Milwaukee County) for “tough love”, for saying what he intends to do and then actually DOING it. A person who sees the folly of deficits and the crippling effect of runaway taxes and regulations.
Walker is inviting businesses to chose Wisconsin. Like any effective turnaround executive, he knows that bold action is better than incrementalism when change is urgently needed. Like many others who are retired and struggling to pay state taxes and outrageously high property taxes, long after the state’s reputation for good government has been flushed down the crapper, I hang on here rather than move away where taxes are more reasonable and the climate more desirable. For the first time in a long time, I am encouraged that I can do it.
Whatever state you live in, there will come a day when you realize you will have to pay the piper. Our state is probably giving you the blueprint, and we are glad to do it. Wisconsin, as has been true most of the 50+ years I have lived here, is seeing things clearly and sucking it up before we have a full-fledged disaster.
Good luck.
whats most remarkable about this, and it happened in ohio too, are the jedi mind tricks and outright lies that conservatives used to get people to vote against their own best interests.
I like how those politicians most addicted to “tough love” – an absurd euphemism calling for those with little to do without – rarely have to scurry to find a limo or bottle of champagne. It’s a popular meme that misdirects many into fighting each other rather than those who rig the game; it’s currently all the rage in Downing Street, too.
Funny thing, and it’s amazing what a few statistics will do, but the tough love preached there has the curious effect of hitting the middling and poor the hardest, while leaving the well to do virtually unscathed, a double whammy that makes life harder only for some, while enhancing the position of those who already have one. They don’t need to use a library; it’s easier for them to whip out a gold card at Borders. Who would have thought such a policy, preached as “even handed”, could have come from a Tory or a Republican?
The countries that have molst tax and spend –Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and yes, even Quebec,Canada, are doing better than the `tough love states.` Go figure. And whoever made the comment upstairs, do some reading, and look at the statistics before you shoot off your ignorance in public. People here are informed.
actually, wisconsin has simply joined the other states taken over by conservatives in a true race to the bottom that has no winners.
I hate to make comments about someone’s appearance, but I can’t see any sign of intelligence in those eyes. Is the tea party stooping to running pod people now?
I’ve decided that I don’t have any choice, but to live through the downfall of the US. I just don’t see any alternative at this point.
Also our new Mich. gov. has already done his little study that shows the reason Michigan isn’t competitive is because the public sector workers make too much money. It couldn’t have anything to do with the gutting of the manufacturing sector. No, not at all.
My R governor came in swaggering like Bush on a bad drunk.
But the progressive groups were ready for her and when she tried to undo the cap and trade instituted by the previous gov….they sued her.
I KNOW she’s going to go after Medicaid.
The legislature is in session now ( they only meet once a year!) then she’ll get up to her no good shock doctrine ways her own self
This guy sounds like he thinks he was elected dictator, the rest of the state may have a few surprises for him….like ….recall.
PS: talk about dumb as a bag of hair
Class war, folks. In Oregon, they raised taxes on the fat cats–and lo and behold the earth didn’t stop spinning. These fuckers refuse to raise taxes on the criminal elites. Just like Barry Oilbummer. Barry suffers from the same affliction. They just want regular people to foot the bill for the criminal banksters and puffy jowled bidness men.
Fucked up–but welcome to America, man. Land of the stupid and selfish.
I’m in Michigan and my local state senator has just put up a bill in our Republican house to give the authority to counties and municipalities to create right to work environments thereby destroying public employee unions. These people really are fascists. Our governor is the former CEO of Gateway Computer (we know what a success story that was). We are all going to be starving serfs before all is said and done.
In addition, I listened to one of teaparty leaders this morning on C-Span and unequivically stated that they don’t comment on foreign policy because they really aren’t interested in it and that isn’t part of their platform. Excuse me, but what nitwit votes for someone who has never been vetted for their foreign policy stance? We are in trouble.
I’m in the Southwest part of lower Michigan and our township put a millage item on the ballot last fall for repairing township roads and the damn thing passed. I can’t believe what we are coming to.
Exactly. And they have the highest rates of volunteerism, adding to the social welfare of individuals, families and communities. The reverse is also true that volunteerism is lowest when the sense of community is dismantled, everyone is told to look out for themselves and that ruthless individualism is next go godliness (a character trait not commonly associated with religion generally or the peasant village Jewish carpenter in particular).
What we need to realize is that there is less tax revenue because of unemployment because of the wall street fiasco and these idiot governors are looking to short term solutionhs that will create long term problems. Job creation can do a great deal to toward lessening to lessen the debt problem. All they are going to do is create an environment where any new jobs pay less and less, thereby exacerbating the revenue problem. This is what happens thanks to corporate America. They love every minute of this.
The Tea Party was started by pod people. I’ve thought about it a lot, and it’s the only premise that makes any sense.
Wisconsin unions furious with Governor Scott Walker
Read the comments if you want to see how many are being co-opted by envy and hatred…not of the crooks who put us here, but people making a decent living.
Indeed Wisconsin has changed. I live in Milwaukee and it is
here since the last elections when Republicans gained all
this power that I noticed the racist, mean spirited madmen
who call themselves republicans. Older and disabled people
here are terrified of what lays ahead with this lunatic of
Governor. More frightful is that Obama has publicity sounded
his horror trumpet that he will order reductions in the
Home Energy Assistant programs for the poor. It is evident
that he is trying to appease the racist mean spirits of the
Republicans. Is there any place to run to and be safe from
these goons?
Well, listen to Obama today speaking about the virtue of the special education teacher taking a second job. That’s now a good thing! The woman is supposed to be helping her daughter get a college education — for what?! So she can become a teacher and need a second job to pay the bills?
Cut their pensions! Cut their benefits! Freeze their wages! Send them on furloughs! They can always get a second job. Go for it Governor. The President has your back.
And you wonder why this guy can get away with this in Wisconsin? We’ve got the President telling the folks that public workers should be happy to need a second job.
What happened to much of Wisconsin is all those steady paper-making and machine manufacturing and auto-making jobs were either off-shored or automated. Multi-national corps want to bring world wages to their $2 a day maximum standard and US workers are no longer needed or desired. They don’t want environmental or worker safety regulations or health care requirements standing in the way of profits for the few.
Get a f**king clue. Walker can’t create jobs, employment and jobs will never be the same as they were in the past. Blaming and punishing the victims of economic globalization (currently promoted with our tax dollars in the US legislature, with assistance from the best black Republican POTUS, ever, think China via Korea) makes Walker think he is important in his own eyes and that is it.
Wake up. Don’t let us keep you, “hanging on,” in Wisconsin’s climate of joblessness and supposed undesirable weather. You obviously can’t fathom the real problems and have drunk the kool-aid. Leave now, please. If you are near retirement or needing senior care soon, good thing that WI citizens will no longer be able to get damages due to neglect or incompetence by yours or your parents’ care providers. Thank our gracious Republican state-house for that.
So aside from paying off his loyal supporters the Fitzgerald family and hiring, at $90K a year, help that is also pulling in three state pensions already, give me one real example of anything benefiting the general welfare of the people of this state, that Walker has accomplished to date. You can’t.
I don’t believe in physiognomy as a science, but this guy’s facial features seem to denote mild stupidity and sociopathic tendencies. It’s not surprising that he’s an establishment conservative.
That is a flattering picture compared to many. My concern is that his innate high intelligence bundled with compulsive and obsessive drive, paired with (apparent to me anyway) his complete lack of empathy, compassion or cognitive ability for honest self-evaluation or even hearing of honest criticism is ultimately very dangerous to those of us being forced to submit to the consequences of rank megalomania. Having both state houses and a recently purchased state supreme court majority enabling him in an ideological driven, orgasmic frenzy is furthering the madness and ultimate destruction he is showing himself capable of delivering.
D I E B O L D
Seems like right now would be a good time to send the Wisconsin National Guard to Afghanistan.
Except if we have an Egyptian event, the “liberal” media will demonize the millions of protestors as terrorists and our military (national guard or otherwise) would then happily extinguish the life of every single protester.
