I’ve been listening to all the speeches so far, and basically, they ca be summarized thusly: “Obama’s a socialist, taxes are evil, freedom is good, Reagan is teh awesome. Also, U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!”
My favorite line so far was from Ron Johnson (T-WI) who bragged about how much Reagan cut taxes for rich people. I’m paraphrasing here, but it was something like, “The highest tax rate went down to 28%! We were 72% free!”
Pat Toomey’s wingnut version of “The Little Red Hen” was just painful.
Here’s a couple more highlights:
“…we have seen President Obama usher in socialism under his watch over the last two years.”
Raul Labrador, on being a US citizen:
I have the birth certificate to prove it.
Meanwhile, CNN’s Erick Erickson sulks because CPAC let the gays in.
Those groups and people who have sat out CPAC this year have done so not because they hate the gays, as Grover Norquist and GOProud would have you believe, but because GOProud is not a conservative organization and its agenda is not a conservative agenda.
For that, they are called losers and nasty bigots.
These losers and nasty bigots have done a lot more for the conservative movement than GOProud. And I am very happy to call them my friends.
This week, I’d much rather be with them than be at CPAC.
Barry Goldwater weeps.

A meeting of the teh Crazies!!
Jeebus BT. What are you doing to prevent psychosis? If I was chained to the computer listening to that, I would surely chew my own foot off.
Really BT Peg is spot on!! What drug do you take to raise your threshold to such vitriol? I know I could never take more than a few seconds of their crap…
Oh wow. Did Erickson just gaybait Norquist?
Oh Erick, son of Erick. You homophobic asshole. Shame on you. I’m sure there’a KKK meeting for you to attend somewhere.
I think he “You’re married to a Mooslim”-baited him.
As for CPAC, I know it’s a cliche to bring up the Star Wars cantina scene, but then again sometimes there’s a reason why cliches are cliches …
I think copious amounts of Lone Star might be involved.
He’s been vaccinated by his exposure to wing-nut conservatives at the local level? You may have something there.
Barry Goldwater weeps.
Yes, but our children often disappoint us.
And the competing Vapues Voters Summit being pitched by Erickson and Co. will make this look like a quilting bee.
He’ll be getting a Nathan Bedford Forrest license plate from Mississippi no doubt.
Eww! I haven’t seen a Lone Star in ages. I think they outlawed selling horse piss disguised as beer…
Or by consumption of fermented beverages such as Lone Star.
I scanned through a number of the posts this morning re events in Egypt, and then I read – and nearly weep – this post about the lunatics attempting to run this asylum.
Really it almost makes me want to conf call David Koch, Rupert Murdoch, et al and holler: UNCLE!!!
These people are in no way “conservatives.” They are out and out freaks. That the nutbars can crow so self-righteously about their racist sexist homophobic crazed fringe stupidity and feel so proud about it says something, I guess, but I’m not sure what.
Someone in a prior post called USA: Dead Empire Walking. That might be applicable to these flaming foolish jerks.
BT should get combat pay for this.
Got it. I’m not a drinker, so that one flew right over my head.
“The highest tax rate went down to 28%! We were 72% free!”
So it’s official – the only actual freedom will come when
no one paysrich people pay no taxes whatsoever. That’s cruel and unusual punishment. I’m pretty sure you’ve violated a few articles of the Geneva Convention.
As for Erickson…that he is allowed to remain on the CNN payroll tells us everything we need to know about “the most trusted name in news.”
Conservative Political Action Cesspool, fermenting new ideas!
Yep. But better not cut their streetlights, police protection, fire departments, military, etc. They deserve that stuff. Unlike those poor, shabby welfare queens…
Seriously, it was that bad. I tried to find the actual text of the speech, but it wasn’t online yet.
Absolutely. As a kid I remember watching shell-shocked WWII vets with metal plates in their heads wandering around the neighborhood. Let’s all hope BT is able to avoid that fate.
On the one hand, I enjoy watching the Repugnant Party splinter into high-value comedy havoc. On the other hand, I can envision a scenario wherein Jeb Bush gracefully waltzes into the Repugnant convention to act as the level-headed mediator…and ends up walking away with the nomination. Is there anyone else who is similarly floating above the fray? If so, it could be them, instead.
Shit. Now I’m gonna have nightmares for a month…
Wish somebody would show up at CPAC and inform the massed wingnuts that Reagan raised taxes in every year of his presidency but one and that Ayn Rand was a medicare/social security welfare queen. They gather not to discuss ideas but to reinforce prejudices and ignorance.
I could see that happening. Wouldn’t make me throw away another vote for Obama though. No more votes for Vichy Dems.
On the contrary. Watching the arrogant Bush family overplay its hand is something you might want to look forward to.
Agree with you, but otoh, wouldn’t matter. There could be dozens of people wandering around CPAC with sandwich board signs, plus having tweets and other digital ways to advertise the TRUTH, along with power points, and so on and so forth, and people making announcements daily…
Such factual truth would never budge these fools from their proudly fictional fantasy land. Clap louder, Tinkerbell!!!!111!!!
I did manage to find some good news today. I’d sign up right away. The seats will fill up fast…
I’ve been predicting JEB for ages now. As I watch these idiots descend to ever more debased levels of nuttiness, one can see the PTB rubbing their hands as they fluff JEB for his staring role.
Time will tell, but…
Yep. Like a bunch of right wing Kossacks. The truth about their leaders and icons is irrelevant and in fact, must be part of a vast conspiracy to besmirch their names.
Sadly, it’s completely believable that they’d say that… and the fools in the audience will clap, cheer, yell and whistle. Dolts.
Exactly. It’s like there’s a sign outside the Conf Center door that says: Abandon Truth, Facts & Logic all Ye Who Enter Here…. or else!
I’m not going to attempt to predict how it might turn out. There is just too much irrational thought and emotion out there when it comes to politics these days. I don’t know if the ‘baggers would support JEB. I’ve been thinking that if the Repugs nominate an “electable” candidate, the ‘baggers will run somebody else as an independent. The Ron Paul faction is still extremely pissed about McLame getting the nomination.
Perfectly sums it up.
They use bigotry and discrimination as tools to manipulate the ignorant and stir them up.
What they want in reality amounts to privatizing profits and subsidizing corporate stupidity on the one hand and, on the other, screwing over the average taxpayer.
Doesn’t look like “freedom” to me.
Of course, Obama and the Democrats claim to be the voice of reason and tolerance. What they’ve done to women’s reproductive rights alone should make blood boil.
And then there’s the sad truth that what they want in reality amounts to privatizing profits and subsidizing corporate stupidity on the one hand and, on the other, screwing over the average taxpayer.
Democrats have proven that they’re no better than the Republicans.
Holy canoli … I can just imagine the Faculty .. ’50′s mannequins with Formica table tops ..
Is Sharon Angle going to speak? No doubt it would be nuts on steroids.
Not sure if she is there …*shudder* .. I did hear she was tourning the early primary states trolling for idjits …/s
I wrote to the NYTimes editor attending. Michael Shear:
Michael: I just heard you on KQED in SF. Please ask leaders at CPAC the following questions.
Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot last month. At CPAC will there be any discussion about the mentally ill getting guns or closing the gun show loop hole? Or will the leaders continue to support the gun lobby as they always do? Why are no real leaders willing to stand up to the gun lobby?
Could you please ask them if they are ever going to do anything or are they waiting for a Republican politician to be shot to do something? (Remember what it took for Reagan’s press secretary, James Brady, to get started in the anti-gun violence business?)
A supporting side note: No handguns are allowed at the CPAC convention hotel (except for uniformed guards). The District of Columbia has strict rules against handguns in public places too. So the GOP chose a strictly “no citizen handguns” place to have their meeting. They ARE in favor of gun control– when it comes to their big meetings.
Oh look over there, Right-Wing-Freakshow!
Still not a reason for anyone of sincere principle to vote (D), ever again.
Reid was vulnerable. Angle should be way too ashamed of herself to appear. But she’s not all that ashamed. She’s had something to say re this conference: Sharron Angle Backs GOProud Presence At CPAC: ‘I Am Always In Favor Of Freedom’ (EXCLUSIVE VIDEO)
That’s a cute fairy tale about the little red hen by Toomey.
But of course–it’s JUST a fairytale.
In the REAL world the little red hen is a big corporate fat cat who gets free wheat from the government and has the other animals harvest it and bake the bread while they’re lucky to get 40 percent of the product and the hen gets 400 percent.
What a bunch of whiney nutjobs.
And yet—poor ignorant people will vote for these guys.
Yes–sadly, I’m from Pennsylvania and we voted for Toomey.
Toomey!
That’s how bad things are. This is why I’m losing hope.
dont lose any sleep over something like that. its already happened, if its going to. If GE, Goldman Sachs, Shell Oil and a few others, want jeb to be nominated he will be. If they want him to be president, he will be.
Yeah, It’s hard to listen to these people, know that their myths are winning and NOT despair.
We could try to turn that despair into action. And not to elect “more and better democrats” I want people to think about this. “What actions can we take that will defund the right wing nuts? What actions can I take that will cost their funders money? When we look at who is pushing these insane ideas we find the Koch Brothers, Scaife, Pete Peterson, NewsCorp (as well as several others).
Are there actions where we can legally cost them money? Because money is what drives all this.
So, for example, if we looked at the Koch Bros industries (energy) and found OSHA violations at their plants, let’s demand they pay those fines and fix the safety.
NewsCorp makes money from Advertising. We are currently making the Glenn Beck show an unsafe place for advertisers. This hurts the bottom line. But Murdoch denies it. We need the institutional shareholders to demand better quarterly returns. That would lead to him getting rid of Beck, since he is not earning revenue for the company. It’s not about winning an argument at the level of Beck, it’s about looking for and finding the vulnerabilities of these people funding the Movement conservatives and making them pay in the pocketbook. And I’m not talking about boycott actions. They don’t have our business now. I’m talking about actions that really have a financial impact, some, like the Beck Advertisers leaving, have already happened, but need to be made clear to the investors that they will not tolerate it forever.
If you hate BT’s posts so much, don’t read them. Or go write your own blog so you can gripe about whatever you want to gripe about. Or both. But it’s aa real pain in the ass to have to anticipate your daily shitbombing.
I agree. I won’t say never again, but not again until I see results. Better sounding rhetoric isn’t good enough.
Those are good ideas, some of which you helped, I believe, put into practice in terms of getting businesses to boycott Beck’s show. All worth a shot, imo. Thanks for offering solutions.
Oh margaret. Calling someone a welfare queen because they took government assistance. You shouldn’t.
Just once I would like some one the ask Bachmann what specifically Obama has done to usher in socialism, or even to define socialism.
You do realize that she’s mocking the official conservative position, don’t you?
I realize M wants to take shots at Ayn Rand. But now I have to question your use of the phrase “official conservative position”.
Can you source that for me?
Can you say St Ronnie of RayGuns catch phrase, or have you conveniently forgotten the “welfare queen driving a Cadillac” meme?
This is not something I should have to “source” for you — take a look at any one of the CPAC speeches today, for starters.
This is something you can’t “source” for me — You made it up.
I don’t have a big problem with a lot of over-the-top commenter’s adding cheering points on to topics. But I think (I know, who cares) those given the power to post should stick to facts.
I took your challenge and listened to the Little Red Hen clip above. It snarked around like an entertaining FDL thread, but it definitely did not establish an “official conservative position” on welfare.
Now I ask again, is there an “official conservative position” on welfare or not. You asserted there was. [There might be, but I can't find it, and I've searched]
Back it up, or back up.
And don’t forget Teh Ghey!
Yeah, you’re right. No conservative has ever suggested that welfare recipients are lazy, that we should abolish the welfare state, that Social Security and welfare breed “dependence” and amount to “slavery” — that Democrats use welfare to destroy families, that women have more babies to get more welfare checks, etc.
Nope, never happened. I’m obviously mistaken.
Someone without a pulse is called a war criminal….
about 1:30 into clip.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385×552675
I know this is tiring. I’m done if you are, but your bar for an
“official conservative position” is
A
Imagine what you would have to accept as the “official librul/progressive position” just on these pages alone.
Have a good evening.
Hate to burst your bubble, but many conservatives, like Rush Limbaugh and numerous rightwing thinktanks, frequently and regularly pump out the “all liberals are lazy” “all liberals want a nanny state from cradle to grave,” it’s “welfare that’s driven this country into the ditch,” and finally: “cadillac welfare queen” was not: a) a “suggestion,” b) it presented as a statement of fact by then POTUS Ronald Reagan, and c) it has been quoted *often* since then both by the rightwing noise machine and by people I know.
The other comments about the laziness of liberals and the nanny state from cradle to grave has been flamed out here *regularly* by conservatives who swing by FDL to chide us dfh’s… and give us what-for. If these are just “random” comments uttered “once” by “one” conservative, then how is it so that so many conservative bloggers say nearly the same thing in the exact same wording (and what’s more, when I visit my rightwing family, I get the same exactly worded statements hurled at me by *numerous* members of my family… how ’bout that).
Seriously, you make it sound as if, one conservative just one time *happened* to make a random comment, and now everyone at FDL is taking it all out of context. I double-dog dare you to listen to Rush or watch Glenn and then try to push your fictional meme that “A” conservative “happened to suggest…..”
That’s hardly at all what’s being discussed here… and furthermore, I think you darn well know it.
But: keep clapping louder!
Laugh at CPAC but the right wing has been organized for a very long time and if not mistaken the country continues moving further and further to the right. Progressives, leftists, and liberals continue to laugh at the crazies while the crazies continue their take over of the country. The real joke is on the left.
I’m not laughing, but I’m equally unhappy that, as you state, the “crazies” have taken over the country.
I would argue that the “crazies” have been “set free” by the corporate Oligarchy to *distract* everyone no matter how they vote from how much we are ALL being ripped off and taken advantage of by the elites.
The so-called “rightwing” IS incredibly well organized, but they are also being *run* by the wealthy and the powerful. Although many conservatives appear to be quite self-righteously *satisfied* with this nuttiness on parade, what, indeed, have they (as in: the “small people”) really gained?
That’s the rub. Conservatives are quite happy to diss us here at FDL whilst extolling the wonderment of Ronald Reagan who, according to conservative *lore,* constantly lowered taxes for everyone. In FACT, that’s not at all what happened, and most middle and lower class voters had their taxes *raised* by Reagan.
So what did conservatives “get” from that, except their very odd fictional version of some fantasy that includes Ronald Reagan telling them that it’s “morning in America”????
What did conservatives personally *gain* from the years of GW Bush?? Not much, as far as I can see, other than some weirdly skewed sense of values that says: even while I am personally getting screwed and hammered by this Administration, I remain ever *victorious* because it is a rightwing Admin.
W Bush did less in terms of getting rid of a woman’s right to chose than even Obama did (NOT that I’m happy at all about that). Bush took a budget that was well in the black into the red; Bush LIED to conservatives just as much as he LIED to liberals about the WMD in Iraq, which led the USA into a costly and deadly and completely unnecessary war, which has only made the USA less safe from terrorist attack.
How did conservatives personnally benefit when GW Bush approved torture? How is that such a great thing? Or were conservatives hoodwinked into ignoring that and/or thinking it’s no big deal. IF so, how does that square with conservative voters “getting their way”?
How *well* did conservative voters *benefit* from that??????
Time to take the blinders off and figure out that whether a politician *claims* to be liberal or conservative, the *proof* is in their actions. And the real questions are: a) am I personally benefiting from these programs, policies and statements, or b) am I being screwed?
No love lost on my part about what passes for “Democratic” politicians these days. But how conservatives can fool themselves that somehow they are “victorious” or “gaining” or whatever when conservatives are in power is quite beyond me.
Well, I didn’t realize that constituted the “official” position.
To me, “official” would be part of the party platform, or at least something written down, not something the family members that don’t like you that much say.
I’m also embarrassed to say I don’t know what “keep clapping louder” means.
Sorry.
