Very small government-y!
In a span of eight days, Ohio Statehouse Republicans will have introduced five separate bills aimed at restricting access to abortions, including a controversial measure banning the procedure as early as six weeks after conception.
The latest proposal — set to be announced today — would make Ohio the first state to consider the so-called “heartbeat bill.” It would outlaw abortions the moment a fetus’ heartbeat is detected — among the earliest stages a state has tried to ban the procedure.
“We are Ground Zero of what I believe will transform the pro-life movement,” said Janet Folger Porter, president of Faith2Action and an architect of the bill which is also expected to be similarly introduced in other states. “It will be the most protective legislation in the country.”
Get big gubmint out of my wallet and back into my sister’s uterus where it belongs!

The Culture of Life™ is growing in the Petri Dish of the States.
When government enables “corporate scum buggery,” its OK in the eyes of the GOP. When government tries to hold corporations accountable for activities which are criminal in nature, government is to big? GOP sounds like crack addicts, Wanting their crack, while eating you!
What about the fucking jobs, GOP?
The fucking jobs are being exported overseas to fatten the corporate bottom line and sweeten the bonuses of the execs.
It’s much easier thowing red meat to the uninformed than dealing with real issues.
It was rhetorical. They promised jobs you see. Guess they didn’t promise US jobs.
Mornin’, BT, pups
Jobs for Americans means either the govt or the private sector have to create them. Creating jobs is at odds with the corporate culture of wealth accumulation. Profits go down when American workers have to be paid a living wage. Profits go up when Chinese and Indonesian workers can be paid less than $5 a day. See Naomi Klein’s No Logo.
Pro-lifer = misogynist patriarchal control freak
My thoughts exactly. Since the GOP has been in the majority not one piece of major legislation from their side has addressed the country’s jobs crisis .
Very good description.
Morning BT & Firepups:
Robert Scheer is up…
o/t
I think you have implied or stated that you are in FL. Did you know that Sen Bill Nelson is a member of The Fellowship (The Family)? I did not know until last Friday.
And really going after Planned Parenthood…Crazy
Jobs, Schmobs. It’s much more important to establish legislation that permits government to get between women and their doctors.
Oh, and keep your gubmint hands off my healthcare.
Asshole hypocrite MFs…
Because everybody knows that planning and prenatal care are socialist plots. My country sucks ass. I want the years I spent serving it back.
What will it take for the exploited here to wake up?
Yep, I’m in Gulfport, FL on St Petersburg’s southern border and yeah, I knew. Never been a Bill Nelson fan. Hoping for a primary candidate for 2012. Send him nastygrams alla time.
And for some entertainment, here’s Rude.
And if you’re listening, Rude: How about fixing up your website so specific pieces can be isolated? Other than that, you’re firing on all cylinders.
There are more Amish in Ohio than in any other state. The Amish are all about control, and although they don’t pay into Social Security or serve in the military, they do vote. It would be interesting to learn how much influence they have in shaping Ohio’s restrictive abortion policies.

And bullshit form letters back, right?
When I send my legislators hate mail, I specifically state that I want a personalized response, or please don’t burn more franking privileges. So I get a form letter back, of course. Idiots.
Beck is a virus…..
Yep, but at least his staffers get an eyeful. Prolly on their blacklist by now. Oh, well, what’s one more list? I’m on so many lists they need a separate database just to keep up.
I send Cornyn nastygrams, he sends me fundraising emails. Douchebag. I send Hutchison nastygrams and she sends me back responses about entirely different issues. Idiotic douchebag.
707!
707 Again!
Are you people trying to make me fall out of my chair?
Did we think they would?
I don’t get fundraising stuff anymore. Switched back to No Party Affiliation right after the 08 primaries. Got really tired of givin’ hell to semi-innocent phonebankers.
The video rips your heart out and makes it real.
Gotta think globally, dontcha know.
Makes me wanna jump on the next ship heading in that direction and join some folks with guts. Why a ship? Figger I’m a charter member of the no-fly list and can’t swim that far.
True.
I’ve never been aprty affiliated and certainly never as a Republican. Writing Cornyn to complain was all the trigger needed.
Robert Kuttner:
I always get replies written in spam from Nelson. Later, I get panhandling e-mail from the Dem Senatorial Campaign Committee.
Yet for some reason, ghost feels it necessary to shove that video into MY face over and over despite knowing that I’ve been unemployed for two fucking years due to those same kind of policies. I can’t imagine why someone would think that a victim should be forced to watch it over and over.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.

The US government has to clamp down on the press… or it will be exposed that we supported the repression, torturing and killing in Eqypt.
All their effin lies will be exposed. The veil will be pulled from the pretty face of US foreign policy called “foreign aid”.
Of course the rest of the world sees what American does … on the ground without the filter of the US lamestream media. Understandably they HATE the US for its policies.
Their reaction is predictable and correct. Fight oppression.
Ghost has so many conspiracy theories and so little time in which to pursue them. Tight schedule, doncha know.
Don’t forget about making elementary school kids pray!
Oh, and we can’t leave out “Intelligent Design”.
Did I mention ten commandment statuary at government buildings?
I also wonder how far government/police power will be expanded in order to enforce the re-criminalization of gays and lesbians.
If I was 30 years younger, healthy, and single I would want to be there as well. I can only hope in my heart that will persevere.
It’s really annoying though, having things like that pushed at me over and over like I was responsible for it instead of being a victim of it. In fact, it’s starting to seriously piss me off. You’d think I was the lost Koch sister or something.
It is the first time I have seen it. I didn’t know it was shown to you over and over again. Yes those policies have affected me as well. I have been unemployed about nine months, not as long as you have been though. Have you confronted him about it?
He’s been pushing that thing like a crack dealer for months. Confronting him is pointless. ghostof911 has never been interested in facts.
Republicans love Big Government.
Democrats love Big Business.
The irony continues…
Btw, the Democrats might as well come out against abortion, too.
(And Rachel Maddow stopped being interesting a long time ago.)
I still like her, and I miss Keith, too. JMHO (although I usually agree with you, Knoxville).
I guess I will learn the longer I am here. I have a lot of catching up to do in politics and world affairs. I have been working my ass off for years raising my kids. I am one of those sleeping Americans that has woke up.
Might be old news to most of you, but I heard yesterday that Keith is going to Al Gore’s network, Current TV.
I’m glad you did! The more, the better!
From Wikipedia’s entry Current TV:
Looks like Keith will have better material to work with at Current TV than he did at MSNBC and will turn that network into something far better than MSNBC ever was.
Honey, I’ll be late getting home today. Got to stop off at city hall and pick up junior’s heartbeat certificate. It’s the new law that is based on the beliefs of some people. Their faith, they call it, and the law is their faith put into our action. Unconstitutional? You mean the part about Congress making no law respecting an establishment of religion? Forget it.
I especially follow what you have to say. You are direct and to the point and have your ducks in a row. That’s the way it should be.
Is Janet Porter one of the women Boehner is alleged to have had an affair with? See the MyFDL diary re Boehner’s position linked on FDL’s front page.
CORRECTION: Looks like I misremembered the info. Here’s the link to the MyFDL diary re the allegations of a Boehner sex scandal.
I am sure that someone else has already proposed this but I think you are onto a good idea here.
Why don’t we create a calendar on FDL that shows the number of days that the GOP has been in control and each day numbered that they have not introduced ONE bill for jobs like they promised.
It will be a great visual and may get some legs in other venues. Jmho.
Bill Nelson sits on SSCI. There is a letter from 12/2 on the committee’s website from Sens Feinstein and Bond to AG Holder requesting Julian Assange be prosecuted for espionage. The letter refers to the release of 250,000 documents. WikiLeaks claims it has released 4,000, even now, more than 2 months’ time later. I told Nelson this letter makes the Senate look stupider than usual. No reply.

Government cannot create jobs. But they can legislate against the murder of hundreds of thousand unborn
Government creates public schoolteacher, policeman, fireman, and soldier jobs. For example.
I’m totally loving all the angry responses to MS! The video of Rachel re yesterday’s vote on the unPatriot Act paints a whole different picture of what the opportunities are for the true believers in freedom (that’s us!) might be with the help of people like Nadler and Kucinich. Margaret, you’re situation is indescribably painful and my heart goes out to you. A suggestion: don’t watch the video!!!!!
Don’t feed the troll, please.
I know it’s frequently pointed out whenever restrictions on abortion rights come up, but it’s always worth mentioning that making abortions illegal doesn’t stop them, and it doesn’t save fetuses. It simply kills kills young women who attempt risky abortions.
Susan Wicklund wrote a book called This Common Secret about her life as an abortion provider. In the first chapter, she shares a conversation she had with her grandmother. Because of a television interview she did, she realized she would have to let her grandmother know exactly what kind of doctor she was, rather than let her find out when she watched the interview. Ms. Wicklund’s grandmother explained that, when she was 16, her best friend came to her for help: the friend’s father had been “at her” and she had become pregnant. Abortions were illegal at that time, but the two girls and another friend had heard you could cause an abortion to happen if you inserted a sharp object into the uterus and decided to try it in their desperation.
The girl bled to death.
I think what bothers me the most is that Republican law makers are aware of this, and they’re ok with that. It’s about “punishing those dirty sluts who can’t keep their legs together”. Ironically, when their own daughters turn up pregnant, these same law makers will procure safe, illegal abortions for them without a hint of empathy for the millions of women denied the same right. In their minds, it’s not the same: “those other women were sluts, my daughter just made an honest mistake”…..
I like to leave this idea in all the abortion related threads:
Let’s stop calling them pro-lifers and legitimizing their frame. Call them the “forced birth movement” instead.
Just an idea.
Looks like your computer’s hypocrite check is on the blink, BT.
I think you meant “your sister’s uterus” (and your daughter’s, and your wife’s, etc., etc., ad wingnuttium).
You know most of these very same folks will be the first ones across the state line “visiting their cousin” when their own lives/families are affected and they need to find some place a bit less “protective.”
HeadedWest wouldn’t know anything about those kinds of jobs.
Much appreciated. Guess I’m a Luddite…
I have a friend who works at a Planned Parenthood clinic that provides abortions. This in Fresno CA, which is the Bible Belt of CA and has many rightwing self-righteously indignant so-called pro-lifers often protesting outside the clinic and such. Plus indignent sermons from the mega churches.
Bc Fresno’s a smallish city, people tend to know one another. My friend has *often* had the experience of seeing some ranting rightwinger hurling insults outside the front door one day, and then the next day shuffling their daughter in the back door of the clinic to have an abortion.
I could go on & on with other stories about hypocritical rightwingers who rant and tirade and push for draconian laws, all the while paying for their wives, daughters, sisters, nieces and mistresses to have abortions somewhere safe.
It’s total b.s. and just another way for conservatives to try to shove their hypocritical double-standards down the throats of poor folks, who will be the most negatively impacted by such b.s. laws.
PTOUI!!!!!
Besides which those kind of *dreadful* “govt jobs” – I mean seriously who wants to pay for a strong police force or fire dept or good teachers??? *what* a waste of money (/s) – are being cut by the thousands across the nation. So I guess the conservative who posts here must be doing a happy snoopy dance over that! Yay: more US citizens out of work! Yippeee! Yay!!! Go TEAM USA USA USA!
Dolts.
Nice to see Rachel point out the double standard. The key to understanding the apparent dichotomy is in interpreting the “Don’t Tread On Me” motto to actually mean “Tread On Those Other Guys.” The social cons want big govt to be their Moral Majority/Jim Crow attack dog; the business cons want to see the libertarian face. They are not mutually exclusive in practice because their respective turfs hardly overlap; hence you see the likes of the Koch Bros, e.g. supporting, and thereby controlling, the tea freaks.
There already is one of those:
Speaker Boehner: When are the jobs?
This will create the most government intrusion in a family’s life . It will create a sense of criminality when the heart beat stops for reasons beyond the control of the doctor or mother. Especially when the birth mother does not spontaneously abort.
Pregnancy is a crime with a bill like this.
The American Working Girl Party opposes the GOP-encouraged outsourcing of f***ing jobs.
I believe that there have been cases where women suffering ordinary miscarriages in Guatemala have been prosecuted. Have to find a cite, though.
What Rachel highlights in her piece is the crucial in understanding the political climate today.
That most US citizens are sheeple, who believe what the MSM and MOTU say, and fail to discover for themselves that the rhetoric does not match the reality.
Until and unless that situation improves, we can hope for little positive change, as the voting public is merely dancing at the end of the marionette’s strings.
In her own partisan way, Rachel assumes that she can only point out how the Republicans’ rhetoric does not match reality.
She thinks that it’s perfectly fine for US citizens who support Democrats to be sheeple. In fact, she encourages it and stands up to make herself part of the problem.
“Ohh noes, those scary, scary Republicans.” Rachel, look at what your buddy is doing now:
Obama to cut energy assistance to the poor
