Hopefully, you’ve been too busy in recent weeks following real news — like the ongoing events in Egypt — to have heard about someone’s lame attempt to relive the Clinton years by writing a gossipy pseudo-biographical novel about Barack Obama.
If your awareness was inadvertently cluttered by this information, though, you can take some comfort in the news that the book appears to be bombing miserably:
“O: A Presidential Novel” … failed to make The New York Times’s top 35 hardcover fiction list. And USA Today reports “O” didn’t even chart on its list of the nation’s top 400 best selling books.
“O” sold only 2,000 copies nationwide, according Nielsen BookScan.
Adding to the schadenfreude over the novel’s sales flop is the growing certainty about the identity of its author: Mark Salter, former speechwriter for Sen. John McCain and the man widely credited for manufacturing McCain’s public image as an honor-driven maverick. (The titles of the books Salter ghostwrote co-wrote with McCain, again if you’ve been blessed enough not to know about them: Why Courage Matters, Faith Of My Fathers, Worth the Fighting For, Character is Destiny, and Hard Call: Great Decisions and the Extraordinary People Who Made Them. Yes, you can puke now.)
Of course, there’s nothing honorable about writing a bitchy, revenge-fueled fantasy. And even less to do so and then pretend you didn’t write it, hiding behind weaselly non-denial denials. (Hint to Salter: Those non-denials would be more convincing if you hadn’t used the same editor/publisher as for the McCain books, and let it be known after the 2008 election that you were going to “try [your] hand at writing fiction.”)
But then, as Bill “Book of Virtues” Bennett might have told Salter — in between slot-machine benders at casinos — when you’re a Republican, there’s no need to live up to those values you pretend to champion when you’re writing op-eds or speeches, or preening in front of cable TV cameras. The bottom line is all about creating a brand, not an actual quality product.

swopa!
Swopa!
You know that the Devil stopped buying Republican souls at retail once he realized he could pick them up on the remainder table for pennies on the dollar.
Yo!
swopa!
So Salter was going to “try his hand” at writing fiction, huh? After the McCain books, he should have gone for poetry and made it look like he was actually broadening his horizons.
Or, hell, just pick them out of the dumpster after the remainder sale.
swopa!
Or Salter could try his hand at surveyor maps.
I think the health department makes them burn them.
Could make for some good kindling.
No crosshairs allowed. :-)
Well, they are so small and withered that they really aren’t much good for even that.
Was this the same book that had all of those really annoying flashing graphics all over the toobz a couple of weeks ago? LMAO! How appropos.
Is one of your links to this piece from the LA Times? If not, this is must reading…absolutely scathing about the book and the publisher. Which is key. We can rail long and loud about the creeps like Beck or this author, but the real villains are the douches who sign the checks.
Fat, bearded douchebag
Incapable authorship
Delusional twit
I have a very small fireplace.
Saltar doesn’t even seem to have the value to inspire a butt load of jokes and criticism. Maybe we’s just all too tired. Was a long week, wasn’t it?
So, it’s Satan or the health department, but they burn either way…almost makes you feel sorry for Republican souls.
See, I don’t think that would make The new York Times’ top 3,500 hard cover fiction list. 2,000? We’re really not missing any zeros?
In all fairness, how do we criticize or mock Salter any more than having been McCain’s ghostwriter already does?
I wonder if they demanded a refund on the advance they paid him.
The cover’s dopey. Making fun of someone’s ears seems pretty juvenile. Maybe the cover turned people off.
Or, on second thought, maybe people just aren’t in to him.
True enough. It’s all been said. Booooooooo……
Perhaps Obama’s ears were all the designer could think of to caricature without going obviously racist…
I hope so! I guess this is what happens when a right wing author fails to make the conservative recommended book list, when hundreds of thousands are bought by bulk and given out to people who don’t actually read them.
“when you’re a Republican, there’s no need to live up to those values you pretend to champion when you’re writing op-eds or speeches, or preening in front of cable TV cameras”
Ouch!
True. Looks like the glamor is wearing of McDroopyPants.
Maybe so. I’ve seen some interesting oped cartoons and they pretty much always use the “ears” which is kind of interesting. People wonder if he’s hearing us. Hm? Or he hears fine but is just conflicted with other issues that get in the way.
Adding to the schadenfreude over the novel’s sales flop is the growing certainty about the identity of its author: Mark Salter, former speechwriter for Sen. John McCain and the man widely credited for manufacturing McCain’s public image as an honor-driven maverick.
McCain’s PR person writes an Obama novel thats a flop let me guess this is suppose to be proof obama is not popular?
First of all what Dem, Lefty or African American wants to read GOP anti Obama propaganda no matter what are feelings are for Obama?
Second its GOPers who would buy an Obama book from one of their own. Why they are not interested in an Obama book beats me….but I suspect they don’t read. I suspect wing nut welfare didn’t buy bulk copies? I suspect the wingnuts maybe going broke in this economy and can’t buy bulk copies like they used too.
WooHoo! I just got an email from “Western@Union” saying that my funds have arrived! I’ll bet all they are waiting for is my bank account information to transfer the funds!
You know, what’s astonishing to me is that there are people who fall for this kind of thing but apparently are smart enough to work a computer.
But then, as Bill “Book of Virtues” Bennett might have told Salter — in between slot-machine benders at casinos — when you’re a Republican,
Did you read my diary?
Anyone who gambles between Midnight and 6 am for ten years. Is not staying home making whoopee with the wife and considering he has a day job Bush 1′s Drug Czar tv personality, writing books one wonders just when he spends time with his wife.
One also wonders how Bill with such a huge gambling problem made it past an FBI check to work at the White House. Gamblers often are prone to blackmail to pay their debts.
One does not wonder though why we lost the war on Drugs with him in charge.

Better than the Nigerian bank scams.
Have I mentioned that I’m from Nigeria…?
Heh – I am highly amused. See, a while back I clicked that “O” link from here at FDL, because I wanted to see who the author was, as if it was anything like other “real” critiques of Obama.
I saw it was anonymous and went “meh.”
So Jane got an ad-click on this one. :)
Oh, yeah, I owe you a drink on this one.
A bit more imaginative but come on. I’ve gotten much better stories from live panhandlers.
I guess I’ve been too busy. Having to move because the landlord heard from her friend that she could sell the house for far more than she had ever dreamed if she just put it on the market, never mind that there are six vacant houses on the street and the landlord only watches Fox News for information. Never mind that the same house was on the market with no showings for over a year before the bitch approached ME to rent it.
This article’s subject is irrelevant and unimportant. Chattering class crap. Latte’ liberal larder. BARF!
(MODNOTE: Disagree with the message but do not insult the messenger. Continuing to do so will result in your comments being moderated)
You clicked it? I didn’t click it just because it so very annoying.
Meet you ’round the corner. In a half an hour.
A microbrew amber ale would go nicely.
I know, but Mencken and Barnum were right.
Actually I think I’ll withdraw that comment and be nice. :)
I’m thinking I could come up with a much better scam. I’ve always said that I was blessed with a criminal mind but cursed with a conscience.
After they clean up the barf. Somebody open a window?
I haven’t scanned the comments yet, but I did notice the obnoxious ads, which I successfully ignored.
Devil with the blue dress on?
Coming down the bar!
Hmmm, I don’t think I own a blue dress, which is odd as it’s my favorite color. I have a blue suit though…
Hey, ya gotta throw the blog a little love now and then.
I ALWAYS click on the BP ads. I lurves making them pay.
Forgot to mention this the other day, but one of our graduate students just told me that she is 7 months into transitioning and will undergo full reassignment in the fall. She has been talking to my trans colleague and is now telling a few faculty members in the department. Have to say that, while she is not the last person I would have expected, she is at least in the neighborhood. Vietnam era special forces, pro football player, part-time sheriff’s deputy, etc.
Trying to turn over a new leaf and be a kinder, gentler Peggy. It’ll probably last most of this thread anyway. >:-D
Danke!
AJ special sez that Egyptian dictatorship dates to the pharonic era.
Bwahhahahhha.
And the earth is 6000 years old.
That’ll do, Peg, that’ll do.
Yeah, how could we NOT know about the damn thing. There were ads for it plastered all over even THIS site a few weeks ago.
Fine, but who’s going to clean up the barf? That’s what I wanna know.
Too many of us spend far too long trying to “prove” our genders “to the world” but it’s really just trying to prove something to ourselves. I didn’t spend much time in that head but I recognize it’s seduction.
I’m hoping it will be the barfer. We’re just the barfees.
Hey, Margaret,, tell me again what “black cat” is in Japanese? [“Kuroneko?}
The feral cat I’ve been enticing has become quite tame. We’ve been calling him “Midnight the Cat,” after a character in a tv show from when we were kids, but I was pitching for the “kuro” name.
And Sarah PalinTM rides a woolly mammoth to work.
That is what my colleague said. It is really nice to see how delighted and happy the student is. She is about my age and has been hiding this from herself and everyone else her whole life and it seems a joyous release to finally be herself.
It is indeed Kuroneko. Pronounced Coo (rolled r) row neck oh.
Well, golly gee. Who coulda predicted.
It almost always is. I hope it is accompanied by a minimum of rejection pain from others in her life.
You mean Prada Palin?
Ohiogringo Fox is saying the housing market is booming? Link please because I’m in shock!
Also debunking GOP lies and GOP claims they represent the masses are as much a part of FDL’s job as debunking Chicago School Economics.
McCain ran on Joe the Plumber a made up GOP creation, a GOP plant who just happened to run into Obama while he was on the street who wasn’t even a plumber.
Joe the Plumber and this book raises all kind of questions about what morons run the GOP PR machine.
That seems to be a mixed bag. Her wife is divorcing her, but her kids seem to be OK with it (that was one of the first questions I asked). She has support from her dissertation chair and a few others of us in the department that she has told and the department generally took it in stride when our colleague transitioned. I am not sure about other friends or how many she has told.
She’s got some tough times ahead and is going to have to find more strength than it took to be special forces. A sense of humor is very important here because if she didn’t know it before, she is going to learn humility. Give her my best. If you or she has any questions, don’t hesitate to ask them.
Time for me to toddle off. Don’t know if I have mentioned it, but the father of one of my colleagues is a urologist (long retired) who helped pioneer sexual reassignment surgery. Take care all.
Night DrD.
g’nite dr dick
Thanks! I think she has a good support network and I know she has a good sense of humor.
Thanks for mentioning that — I didn’t have time to get into the reviews, but that LA Times piece by Tim Rutten is outstanding. First, just to nail down that Salter is obviously the author:
Can you get more disgustingly self-serving than that?
And then, as you note:
So true.
Silvio Berlusconi lurvs him some Hosni Mubarak. How….okay, that’s just weird.
Right? I’m thinking somebody got their ass chewed out over this. (I hope they printed millions and serve them right!)
Wow! This thread died. Guess I’m going to go to bed. Night all.
g’nite margaret
Swopa, I thought John Wayne wrote all them books you listed in yer diary!
*G*
Nice read, thanks . . .
. . . so sad about ‘O’ not selling . . /s
Dang, you quit easy gal!
Wake up!
*G*
‘Dey don’t GOT no souls . . . ;-)
Hey Larue!
What’s cooking this weekend? I’m thinking something with couscous…
Howdy CE! *waves*
Heh, low profile here due to calories and such . .
But Sunday, for Da Game . . . we got a birfday package we saved for this (our Birfdays were 17 and 24 Jan for us both).
From SeaBear in WA state . . . . smoked salmon, smoked salmon pate, and more. All from exotic WA and Alaskan salmon . . . so I’m gonna get some cocktail loaf pumpernickel, a small variety of stinky and not stinky Italian cheeses, a lil cream cheese for mixing.
N a couple of avacados, not for guac, but to slice along with some thin slice red bermuda’s . . . n of course, my FAV expensive treat . . . some German Stone Ground Whole Grain Mustard!
*smackinlips*
Thank you!!
OMG that all sounds so wonderful! I’ve been buying avocados, slicing them with a funky metal stringed instrument, and layering them with red onion, goat cheese and oil and vinegar.
Thank you, Mark I’ve been to Morocco and Algeria within the past 15 years and spent some time in Tunisia. Always meant to get to Egypt.
I love the work the Gorilla Guides have done on the Qu’ran. Keep safe and keep up the good work.
A nice pasta dish is ditalini, crushed tomatoes, chick peas, garlic, and cumin mixed together. Delicious, healthy, and filling.
