As we watch on Al Jazeera the thousands and thousands in Tahrir Square pause for evening prayers, Mubarak is in crisis meetings and has sworn in “the spy chief” Omar Suleiman, nation’s intelligence chief, Vice President. Suleiman is from the military and has been considered a presidential candidate in the past but it’s unlikely the people in the streets will see this as sufficient change and Al Jazeera reports that protesters who heard the announcement are responding with chants for Mubarak to go and insisting Suleiman is not enough.

The people in Tunisia, Egypt and Yemen are fighting for basic freedoms we here in the US take for granted. The teabagger types and their fellow travelers riled up by their rhetoric are fighting against — traffic laws.

It’s long past curfew, but Tahrir Square is filled with Egyptians of all classes. A funeral procession for a victim wends through the crowd.
Will the army crackdown? Will Mubarak step down?

We are still dealing with snow, snow, snow… Here are a couple of photos I took on my phone on Thursday, after Wednesday’s snow storm dumped 15 inches on us… and after I shoveled out the fourth side (both sides of that gate) and the front walks. This new phone takes much better photos than my old one did.

Late Night: Egypt the Prize |
| By: Swopa Friday January 28, 2011 8:20 pm |
At this instant of unresolved tensions in Cairo, it’s only natural that a prominent foreign-affairs pundit step forward to say… well, I’ll let the headline tell the story: “Egypt protests show George W. Bush was right about freedom in the Arab world.” And naturally, since the article is written by a diehard neoconservative (Elliott Abrams) who worked in the Bush administration, this argument is made not in an obscure blog post or an ideological-fringe magazine, but on the op-ed page of the Washington Post.

Obama Misses the Point in Egypt |
| By: Siun Friday January 28, 2011 5:30 pm |
Once again, the Obama administration is unable to catch up with events in Egypt and unwilling to take a strong stand on behalf of the people who call for democracy and human rights. From Vice President Biden’s comment last night that Mubarak is not a dictator, Sec. Clinton’s weak words of “concern” and now President Obama’s statement which, while claiming to understand the “grievances” of the Egyptian people, relies still on Mubarak to bring about change and grants Mubarak a legitimacy clearly lost in the streets of Egypt today.
