The Sheriff’s office believes the second suspect arrived at the location of the shooting with Loughner, and Dupnik indicated that police have pictures of him. Dupnik confirmed in the press conference that the man is a white male, in his 50s, and they do not believe he took part in the shooting.

As more details are revealed about the background of purported 22-year-old shooter Jared Loughner, who is in custody currently for the shooting in Tucson today of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, Federal Judge John Rell and a number of others, at least five of whom have died, a number of people are speculating about his possible mental illness. One diagnosis that keeps arising is schizophrenia. It’s worth looking into what that might mean.

Sheriff Clarence Dupnik: Suspect is a white male, 22 years old, won’t divulge his name, recently the subject of police interest. Has a troubled past, and Dupnik is not convinced he acted alone. Some reason to believe suspect came to this location with another individual, and that there was an indication the other individual was involved. They have pictures of him. But cannot, on advice of council, give more details at this time. Says it is a male, white, and they are “actively in pursuit” of him.

Gabe Zimmerman, one of three staffers of Gabrielle Giffords who were shot today at her Tuscon community event, has been named as one of those who died. The other two are expected to survive. Zimmerman was a former social worker who served as Giffords’ director of community outreach.

Gabby Giffords was clearly a very courageous woman talking with MSNBC so calmly after her office was vandalized after her health care reform vote, in March of 2010. Note in this video Chuck Todd’s idiotic “defense” that campaign rhetoric has borrowed from war rhetoric over the years. Giffords brushes him off, noting it’s much worse now than it ever has been. Care to walk that defense back now, Mr. Todd?

Loughner encourages people to read the Constitution in order to “apprehend of the current treasonous laws.” He appears to be more paranoid than political, however, and concludes “The government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar.”

As many as 12 people, perhaps more, have been taken to the hospital. The reports are sketchy and conflicting, but it seems that at least four people have died at the scene, including a federal judge, John McCarthy Roll.

NBC is reporting that Chief Judge John Roll has also died in the shooting incident that also targeted Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tuscon, Arizona today.
