Americans have been watching the Teabaggers for almost two years now, and as it turns out, unbridled, spittle-producing rage isn’t very popular.

How many times have you heard Democrats claim that “this moment” will be the magical opportunity when they convince the American people to like the new health care law? The newest “opportunity” to win the public over is apparently the House Republicans’ push for repeal.

A week from today, the Senate will reconvene, and the first item of business will be how to deal with the rules for the 112th Congress. Three Senators – Tom Udall, Jeff Merkley and Tom Harkin – will spearhead an effort to change the Senate rules that would attempt to achieve two goals – 1) make it faster to complete legislation and confirmations on which there is broad agreement, and 2) make it harder for obstructionists to carry out filibusters, or at least to make it opaque who is doing the filibustering and why.

Why, if the U.S. prevented Duvalier from returning in 2006, they were either unable or chose not to prevent his return this time?

While the media fervor has subsided around Bradley Manning’s conditions at a Marine brig in Quantico, VA, we all need a reminder that nothing has changed for Bradley. He still spends 23 out of 24 hours alone in his cell in severe isolation, with severe restrictions on his social contact, news consumption, freedom to exercise, and ability to sleep.

That’s why it was encouraging to see the LA Times editorialize last week on Bradley Manning’s conditions, calling his imprisonment “inhumane” and “indefensible.”
