Greetings from South America, where the news about the valiant Señora Hamsher comes as no surprise. It is what thugs in a thugocracy do.
Mornin’, BT, pups
Hey, BT, the link to “Land of the free?” goes to Krugman’s op-ed.
That SOTU Obama-can-write-his-own-term-paper “preview” was such an incredibly vacuous piece of self-congratulatory mirror polishing that I could barely make myself read beyond the first two paragraphs. NYT– why bother?
Jane and House’s experience getting out beyond blogs specifically.
Thanks — fixed.
So Obama’s SOTU is likely to include a nod to Social Security cuts, big promises on gutting billions from government spending, nothing on common sense gun control (even when the country is demanding it)…
The Republicans ought to love this speech …
Thanks alot….a reminder of I did not detain that woman, that man, or the car…..What word would the authorities use?
“Greenland to quiz Denmark over CIA renditions,” (IceNews.is, Jan. 24, 2011)
Has anyone explained what Jane’s car papers have to do with not letting House make a visit? Seems they certainly could have let him go right ahead.
It gave them an excuse where there wasn’t one before.
Sickening isn’t it? I know next to nothing about the military; certainly does not help the image.
With my luck I’d have been stopped by the VA state troopers before I ever got to the base.
Morning BT & Firepups:
He’s waiting for The Quitter to fully implode.
And he wants to keep that FoxPac money rolling in as long as he possibly can. And speaking of Chucklehead Huckabee, what’s up with the “repeal” commercials that are airing all over the place? They offend me. (Then again, all commercials offend me to a greater or lesser degree. That’s what the mute button is for, right?) I don’t suppose it ever occurs to the average viewer that since these spots are ubiquitous, there must be some pretty big financial interests pushing “repeal.” Let’s see…1+1 = um…what was the answer again? Can I buy a vowel?
Hedges is up…
Peter Orszag openly hoping for a budgetary trainwreck (subscription required for full piece):
…The bottom line is that there may well be US public debt tremors this year, both during federal debate over raising the debt ceiling and with at least a limited number of crises in local and city governments. The bigger problem, though, lies beyond 2011, as the unsustainability of the federal government’s fiscal trajectory becomes increasingly clear. I hope it does not ultimately require a crisis to restore fiscal sustainability at the federal level, but I fear it will.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.

Be good to yourselves, and all other living things
When the banks, corporations or politicians are involved in criminality it’s imperative in the interests of preserving the status quo to “look forward” and not backward. Mr. Bipartisan has taught the nation this valuable lesson.
The Republicans will pan the speech allowing Obama to move further to the right. If he moves any further to the right there’s no reason to believe that the Republicans wouldn’t nominate him for their candidate in 2012. Now that would be “bipartisan.”
Yep, I suggested to the Guardian that they read some of the specifics from Jane’s Twitter to Q authorities, avoid the word “detained” and ask if it is true that her car was towed and that Mr. House was “delayed” by repetitive tactics in order to make him miss his scheduled visit which he was aloud to have on previous visits.
Supporters of suspected WikiLeaks leaker Bradley Manning were prevented from visiting him on a technicality.
This is the cutline on the photo in the Guardian. What was the technicality?
Per The Guardian “Hamsher’s car impounded after guards found the vehicle’s license plates had expired and Hamsher was unable to produce insurance papers.”
That applied to Jane who was not visiting. It did not apply to House.
What was the “technicality” for House?
The article never clarifies that concern.
He was riding in a car with expired plates? You are right that it is not explained. But the point was the delay, not to make sense.
Yep, I understand that. My point is the Guardian fell down on the job in terms of all the facts. Jane was not visiting Manning. The technicality Quan used to “explain” the delay did not apply to House and the Guardian failed to get to the issue of why House was delayed.
Morning Pups. A couple of points on Krugman’s column. The first is that he fingers what is perhaps the most common error in conventional economic reasoning (always assuming that it is in good faith, which I often don’t). Individual companies compete with each other, so it is true at a micro level that lowering costs increases their competitiveness. This is not true at the aggregate level — i.e. competition among firms situated in different currency areas. The exchange rate and the price level provide two additional degrees of freedom for achieving rough balance of the value of exports and imports (setting aside capital flows for simplicity). This is simple economics; most people and obviously most businessmen who dominate our political discourse, simply don’t get it.
As to the other point, Simon Johnson points to a paper by Acemoglu reviewing research on the huge alteration in American economic policies vis-a-vis the middle classees over the last half century. Acemoglu is another prime Nobel candidate and has written on (among many other things) how oligarchies in countries we used to think as backward (US becoming one at a rapid pace now) managed to screw up their economies by tilting the rewards of effort and ambition in their favor. Oligarchy plus thugocracy. What a deal. Don’t you love it?
Your comment would make a great diary. Please consider posting your comment as a diary.
Do you have a link to the Acemoglu paper?
Who would have guessed. Conservative Ben Stein has said Obama should be nominated as the Republican candidate for 2012.
