When pressure for an international investigation swelled after the killings, Israel refused to cooperate with independent reviews but assured us all that Israel would conduct an inquiry into what happened. And to no one’s surprise, Israel has now concluded that it did nothing wrong.
Along with the report’s release:
Israel also plans to launch an international public relations campaign about the Turkel report’s findings.
That PR plan will be hampered however by the release by Al Jazeera and the Guardian of an immense cache of secret documents which detail negotiations and plans related to the occupation. I’ll be discussing that in another post in the coming days but first, it’s important to note how far from accountable Israel has chosen to be as they whitewash the killing of nine activist on the Mavi Mamara.
The Jerusalem Post lists the issues covered in Part one as:
·Whether or not the naval blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip by Israel conformed with the rules of international law
·An assessment of the actions taken by the IDF to enforce the naval blockade
·An examination of the actions taken by the organizers of the flotilla and its participants and their identity
and after mentioning the limitations on the investigation – the commission was not allowed to question any of the soldiers involved, also noted last night before the release that:
It is almost certain that the committee will uphold the legality of Israel’s naval blockade and its right to board the vessel in order to prevent it from reaching the Gaza Strip. At least two of the committee members, Horev and Merhav, openly defended Israel’s actions during its questioning of some of witnesses, particularly the Israeli Arabs and the human rights representatives.
The report does precisely that with the findings summarized by Haaretz:
Israeli soldiers who took part in a raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla last May which resulted in the deaths of nine people had acted in self-defense, according to the first part of a report by an Israeli panel of inquiry into the incident, which was released Sunday…
The report also determined that Israel had been in compliance with the formal conditions of enforcing a naval blockade on the Gaza Strip, adding that Israel had also complied with the humanitarian conditions for such a blockade.
Defense Minister Barak said the report “proves Israel is a law-abiding nation” while Netanyahu said:
“The truth is simple,” said Netanyahu. “IDF soldiers defended themselves and their country. It is not only their privilege but also their duty and the State of Israel stands behind their actions.”
I’m not sure how you can watch the video above, of Israeli soldiers kicking a man on the ground then shooting him and agree.
Nor can it have any credibility when even Hanin Zoabi, a member of the Israeli Knesset who was on the Mavi Mamara noted that:
she was not summoned to testify by the Turkel Commission. “The commission purposely and intentionally failed to summon the civilian and the only witness to see what happened out of fear her testimony would damage the harmony of the report,” she said.
“The report is a scanty version of the official Israeli version. The report cannot clear Israel’s image as a serial international law breaker,” Zoabi added.
It’s important to remember that this “report” was Israel’s answer to international calls for an investigation – an Israeli distraction from the calls for action under international law, and of course, an Israeli action backed by the Obama administration who has shown similar disregard for legal accountability for its own actions and those of its predecessors.

I am so not surprised that gangsters investigating their own actions produce a report saying that they’re innocent.
I also don’t believe it.
And of course people who call bullshit on this report will be “prejudiced against Israel” and “antisemitic”.
Siun, have you seen the latest bombshell…?
As Ha’aretz noted today…
Fatah, Abu Mazen, Erekat, etal are going down in a flaming ball…! *gah*
Here’s Al Jazeera’s link…
Here’s the Guardian’s…
Look forward, not backward.
So, when Israeli soldiers board a flotilla bound for Gaza illegally, and encounter gunfire, they are supposed to know who has a gun and who doesn’t while defending themselves. The title of this article is typical of the widespread rabid and irrational hatred of Israel. So sick of it.
The matzo balls are flying as they are lying as they are sending those innocents a dying in international waters…
But hey WTF do you think that an Israeli appointed “Panel” would come up with?
A finding that Oh God forbid any thing their Military did was against international law?? tink again.. The victims were murdered and they had every right to defend them selves but did not have any guns…
Honestly, I think this is on a par with the Pentagon Papers and Wikileaks…!
With these revelations there’s no way we can honestly veto the Palestinian plea to recognize Palestine, at the UN…!
So, Israel should just allow anyone to smuggle arms into Gaza at will by whatever means they desire. Never check a flotilla, blame Israel yet again for defending itself. If Israeli soldiers are fired upon, blame the soldiers. I really hate to say it, but this bias has to be rooted in antisemitic (anti-Jew) sentiment.
The Palestine Papers are very important and I plan to post about them – with all the news today, I figured I need a little time to digest them
The Israelis boarded a humanitarian aid boat – in international waters. None of the murdered were armed, there were no guns on board until the Israelis landed.
But I suspect you don’t particularly care about the details.
Do you realize that not one firearm was found on board any of the ships that participated… Including the Mavi Marmarra…? Get a clue, dood…!
*heh* Ditto that…! You know I’ll be busy too…! *g*
And the ships were in international waters!
Why is it that any time someone says something that is not complimentary of Israel, it is antisemitic? Americans get to say something about these things because our tax dollars pay for these actions. Get sick of it if you want to.
So, Germany should just allow anyone to smuggle arms into the Warsaw Ghetto at will by whatever means they desire. Never check a truck, blame Germany yet again for defending itself. If German soldiers are fired upon, blame the soldiers. I really hate to say it, but this bias has to be rooted in anti-Nazi(anti-German) sentiment.
A sickening cite…
When you act like a schoolyard bully, people sit up and start to question why. Doesn’t matter if you are Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Atheist, or hey let’s throw in Communist for the redneck rightwing low info humans. Israel has been using tanks to kill flies for far too long.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jan/23/palestine-papers-expose-peace-concession is of interest. The Palestinians proposed a Taba based/Taba-Geneva like solution, and Obama refuses to force Israel to accept it.
Clinton pushed the acceptance, but was obviously has been told to back off. Direct talks under these conditions lead immediately to peace – if Bill Clinton was still in Office, But under Obama we have a President more worried about the military industrial complexes need for a reason for contracts than he is in the need for mid-east peace.
As to your video, I don’t see it as proving, or dis-proving anything, but understand if others do. An area can not claim to be a country and declare war, and then object to the legality on a blockade under international law – and those that try to break the blockade like Turkey are guilty of a war like act when they send a ship. All of which is background noise – at least for me – in the fight to get a 2 state solution.
But I agree with Ctuttle – Israel must declare The Palestinian area a separate state – and if they do not, the UN should. If Obama has no backbone, others must step up.
The ships were in international waters, they hadn’t gotten to the area that Israel claims as its territory.
So anything the Israeli military did was illegal: they weren’t in their own territory, they weren’t protecting themselves from an armed attack, and they were killing unarmed civilians.
Israel has every right to enforce it’s blockade of arms smuggling into Gaza. How are Israeli soldiers supposed to know who is firing at them? Clairvoyance? Clearly someone did fire, and was willing to put unarmed civilians in harm’s way to further their own cause.
A schoolyard bully? You mean like all of Israel’s neighbors, including ‘Palestinians’ who have staged many coordinated genocidal attacks, suicide bombed, and relentlessly fired tens of thousands of rockets at Israel? Ohhh, you mean Israel trying to defend itself and stop it. Gotcha.
You’re going to have to come up with something better than the tired idea that objection to irrational criticism of Israel is labeling people antisemites unfairly. I see real evidence of it, why don’t you. the preexisting bias against Israel (I assert it is against Jews first and foremost) is sickening and extremely transparent.
One only has to substitute another nation’s name where Israel is written. What then? Try Iran for example, and would the acquiescent attitude still be the same? What if China were? But it is Israel. Oh, yes there were short lived protests and expression of outrage. Clearly the gears of the imperial hegemony are turning for their own ends and security trumps liberty.
Iran lives under Sharia Law, hangs gays, and stones women to death for adultery. No comparison to Israel whatsoever. Not that you don’t know that, but hey this is a prime opportunity to twist the truth and blame Israel yet again so go for it.
Jim,
The attack on the flotilla led by the MV Mavi Marmara was in the middle of late night. At the time of the attack, the flotilla was headed away from the coast. Had the IDF waited three more hours until daylight, they could have used corvettes or frigates to channel the Mavi Marmara into a pocket between two 15,000 hp tugs with a cable strewn between them. The cable could have fouled the cruise ship’s props. That would have stopped the cruise ship dead in the water, with no casualties.
Had I been in charge of operational planning, something like that would have been done, rather than the potentially dangerous helicopter assault. The IDF failed to plan in such a way as to reduce harm to passengers and to its own men and women. Such a stupid defense force should be more honest about its shortcomings than this farcical report indicates.
The fact that you so blindly are defending such stupid military tactics and concentrating on name-calling doesn’t bode well for people like you actually helping the IDF in the long run, IMHO.
GOD said it was OK.
Oh, I’m sorry. I see this thread has already been hijacked. How appropriate!
I’m just defending Israel’s right to defend itself. Flotillas have routinely been used to smuggle arms to Gaza. Israeli soldiers were fired upon, they did not initiate the hostility. End of story.
@Jim
Yeah, don’t you just love it when those unarmed aide workers in international waters were shot in the back of the head at point blank range 4-5 times with no guns ever found on the ship. If the Israelis had found guns on the ship they would have had every news outlet in the world down at the dock where the Mari Marvara was to hold a Monty Python’s Flying Circus act.
When you defend the indefensible, you merely show: a. your bias making you blind to the truth; and b. your willingness to suspend analytical thinking to attempt justification of an indefensible act with false equivalents.
Right, no guns but shots were indeed fired at Israeli soldiers. I guess they were ghost bullets. The world, it seems, has come full circle and trying to find a way to demonize Israel for defending itself.
