Having lived through weeks of 115 degree weather I have to agree.

I have lived in Sacramento proper, North Highlands, Rancho, Carmichael, South Sac… and the only place I would return to in the valley – truthfully – Davis.

Eric Fuller was shot in the knee and the back in Tuscon. He is speaking out against the people who contribute to the violent rhetoric on the right.
So of course Fuller challenged by the leader of the tea party, Humphries, and allegedly said something violent to Humphries. For that Fuller was arrested.

I have been talking to a group that works on gun violence issues and wondered if anyone was reaching out to the victims to see if they wanted help talking to the media about the issues. I know how hard it is to stay on message when you are part of a story.

Mark my words this will be out there on the right just as fast as they put out the idea that the shooter was a liberal because he read Communist Manifesto.

i appreciate the thought tearloch. i’ve been using those compressed sawdust logs (called idaho logs at the fireplace store in town) and they burn hotter and longer than the wood i had been burning. an additional plus is i can stack an easy 80 logs next to the stove which lasts for several weeks — with regular wood, i was able to get about one weeks worth stored inside.

to get the best heat outta this stove, i have to close the front damper and can’t see the fire either. the fireplace store has pellet stoves and they heat their entire facility with one going full blast in the winter. i always go over and warm my hands before i head to the counter — as do a lotta folks coming in.

Phoenix’s KPHO.com reports that Eric Fuller has been involuntarily committed to a mental facility:

Pima County sheriff’s spokesman Jason Ogan said that Fuller has been charged with threats and intimidation and he also will be charged with disorderly conduct.

In addition, Ogan said Fuller has been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility.

We were just talking about how it should be easier to commit someone to a mental health facility. Leave it to the right to try it out on us first.

My friend Rich directed me to a guy who worked on the process of making it easier for Army recruits to shoot people. They have this whole process where they go from abstract to specific. The reason was because studies showed that in some wars soldiers didn’t actually aim, they just shot in the direction of the enemy. They still had some built in hang ups about shooting a human being. The Army developed methods to wring that out of them.

He’s still your son. It’s really hard to see your child make decisions differently than you would want them to; I certainly had to do some soul searching when my son enlisted in the Marine Corps.

I love him. So I had to support his decision. I was there for his graduation from boot camp. same for AOS. It was really hard to have him go to Iraq, knowing that the politicians sending him were lying and that the war could easily end up with him not coming home whole and hale. Knowing he was loved and that I cared for him helped him come back whole.

It didn’t stop me from working to keep the war from starting, and continuing to work against the war.

He’s back. And while he did get re-activated after finishing his 4 years regular duty after two years of college, he’s graduating in May.

Our children are not us. Your son should have good values from the way he was raised and from your roll model. He’s made a choice you never would, nonetheless he deserves your love, not your condemnation.

You don’t have to take the alienation from him you feel from his decision and raise the stakes by telling him “he’s not my son”. Be above that. Remember your love for him. Keep your hopes to his safety and that he not be broken physically, mentally or spiritually. Be strong for him so you can help make that outcome more likely.

Also, we all own guns. I took my kids to gun safety with the NRA lessons when they were young. We didn’t own guns at the time, but I wanted them to know about guns in our society. The NRA guys were really good at teaching gun safety and responsibility. They even overlooked my Impeach Bush stickers. As I overlooked theirs. We are all humans, in the end. They were wonderfully supportive of the military wives and families . me too.
The upshot? we wound up buying guns. I’m not against guns.I like target shooting, I’m good at it and have been since I was a kid. “Annie Oakley”" I’m against guns as a culture. I no longer shoot. But, I would.

I used to teach the NRA hunters’ safety course here. Neither my wife nor daughter like to shoot, and I don’t go out target practicing unless my rifle needs siting. I’ve never had to buy a firearm, as I’ve been given or inherited some very expensive weapons. I’ve got all of them, including my pistols so locked away that if somebody invaded the house we’d be just as fucked as if we didn’t have any.

Haven’t gone hunting in three years, and that was for grouse.

You really need to talk with him. As in listen to him. keep your cool, don’t tell him he’s making a mistake.

Listen. Keep calm. Ask him to help you understand his decision. Let him know you love him and while you’re confused about his decision he’s a grown up.

It’s hard. But both of you will be a lot better off from doing this. It’s a really bad idea to close down communication.

If he ends up serving in a war zone he’ll be much better off knowing he has loving parents back home.

Eric is the head of theory and composition at Juilliard right now. He was in town all week and spent an hour with my TA, looking at my TA’s piano sonata, which he wrote under my tutelage. Eric is really nice – quite unlike me. Wants to come up here in the summer and go fishing with us.

The most Good Mother Affirming moment in my life was taking my 15 year old son to a gun shop to buy his First Gun. Quite an experience in the power of Male Hormones and the effects on society.! I was the best Mom in the world. They were giving him advice, convincing me that going for “concealed-carry” was a necessity, talking about how our 22 rifle wasn’t what we needed to defend The Home. Need a Glock. Which I didn’t like because it was loud and the ammo was spendy. And it was a killing machine. So, we got a 22 pistol. Later, a training rifle ,22.
So, in conclusion, don’t fucking fuck with us. We will 22 you.
