In the wake of the unspeakable acts of the past week, I feel it important to our great nation that I speak out and reassure all the wonderful people who have supported me throughout this tragedy that Mamma Grizzly is still the fighter you have always known and loved.
I think we can all agree that the worst thing to happen in the past week was not the indiscriminate shooting of 20 people at a Tucson supermarket, or the death of a 9 year-old girl and a federal judge — it was the fact that people opportunistically used the event to score political points on me, Sarah Palin. Imagine. Our founders would be shuddering in those big white wigs at the very thought.
We must condemn this outrage if our Republic is to endure.
You might not be familiar with the term “blood libel.” I was going to spring it on Katie Couric because I was pretty sure she wouldn’t know what it meant either, and then who’d have the last laugh. “Gotcha,” Katie. But now seems like the right time to bring it up.
For over a thousand years, Jews have been falsely accused of murdering young children and using their blood to make matzos for Passover. It has been used to justify the persecution and massacre of Jews from the Crusades to the Holocaust. And there is no better way to describe the injustice being visited on me, Sarah Palin, right now, than to equate it to the murder of millions of Jews over the centuries.
Just because I put some little old map up last year, with a symbol over Gabby Giffords’ district that some are calling a “crosshairs,” and Gabby Giffords herself said that it was an irresponsible act that frightened her, some journalists and pundits think it’s fair to incite hatred and violence by asking me about that. I sent an aide out immediately to tell Tammy Bruce right after the shooting that these were nothing more than surveyor symbols. So what if I called them “bulls eyes” and when I released it told people to “reload, not retreat.”
In this moment of terrible tragedy, any journalist who wants to ask me about that is committing an outrage worthy of Joseph Goebbels.
I had one of my people go through my old campaign speeches, and they found this bit where I said that violence was not the answer when I was in Arizona once, and you think that would be enough to satisfy everyone. But no. Just because there had been a dozen or so incidents of vandalism and death threats against Gabby Giffords and other Democrat members of Congress at the time I put up that map, and John Boehner and other Republican leaders were condemning the violence while I was egging people on, the socialist media wants to ask me if it was the absolute smartest thing to do.
It’s obscene. There, I said it. Talk about your pogroms.
In summation, I didn’t really know Gabby Giffords. But right now when she’s lying in a hospital bed, holding her husband’s hand and unable to speak, maybe ever again for the rest of her life, let’s not look back to what she actually DID say. Rather, let’s take a moment while I, Sarah Palin, interpret for you what I think she probably DID mean when she read the First Amendment. I am confident that she would be as offended as I am when, less than a week later, one of her fellow freedom-hating socialist Democrat members of Congress proposed a law that would make my map illegal. Being Jewish and all, I’m sure she knows what “blood libel” means.
To my supporters who have stood by me and Todd and the kids in the midst of this crisis, which I would compare to 9-11 but I don’t think that’s quite strong enough, I want to thank you for your patriotism, your wisdom and your tolerance. I didn’t know the founding fathers either, but since they all ran round shooting each other’s heads off all the time as a way to settle disputes, I’m certain they would consider these questions being raised about my character, my judgment and my leadership at this moment to be nothing short of treason.
So now that we all understand that the real victim here is me, let’s stop this mindless finger-pointing and temper our wild accusations and come together as a nation in a positive manner. Let us strive to be a country of personal responsibility, where people stop blaming everyone but themselves for their problems. America will be a better and stronger country if everyone just remembers to respectfully engage me whenever they want to ask me a question. We must all strive for a better future for our country, and as we all know, what’s good for Sarah Palin is good for America.

About Firedoglake
Good job well done Sarah. Who was your speechwriter? It does have a certain coherent flavor to it.
The woman is an absolute waste of oxygen.
Jane, how gracious of you to give Sarah Palin space on FDL to state her case. Yes, we all must come together for a better future.
Oh, and Sarah, enjoy your bag of salted dicks.
Brilliant!
Absolutely unhinged.
Would welcome a clinical psych eval of this speech.
Interesting Russian reference too. Must be due to that backyard influence.
These words reflect a complete void of responsibility, wisdom and self-control.
Did you steal Sarah Speech Jane? WOW
Just why can’t the victims sue Sarah and hate Media? If I yell fire in a crowed theatre and people die I go to jail and can get sued.
But if 24/7 I lie and spread hate on the media knowing that crazy people with guns will act (because crazy people with guns have acted before several times) then its ok?
My freedom of speech does not protect my right to yell fire in crowded theatre so can someone explain why Sarah and Hate Media are not being sued?
Shorter FreepTards:
People saying true things about my nutjob ways is equivelant to the murder of millions of innocent people!
Can even Media Matters give us a number of how many times Sarah has suggested violence? Or is that number to high to count without a super computer?
Now Jane, some people are going to think this was really her speech without a snark tag at the end of your post!! Alot of crazies out there. You betcha.
Palin shows a lot of courage in coming to FDL instead of hiding behind Face Book.
And
And
This is over the damn cliff. Holy Jeebus.
Oh Jane, I see the Roseanne Rosanadana in this speech. Brilliant.
What a disgusting person and proof that God made more horse’s asses than horses.
Earlier, I had considered editing the whole We are better than fingerpointing comment, with We are better at fingerpointing, but then I thought it might be too snarkish.
Loved this post So Much. Especially in light of the posts about SP in the last two days. Jane – you are your own straight guy, setting up the punch line. (Not really, but sometimes it works that way.)
Palin from the link: “Like many, I’ve spent the past few days reflecting on what happened and praying for guidance.”
To whom, I wonder.
Next paragraph: “President Reagan said, “We must reject the idea that every time a law’s broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.” Acts of monstrous criminality stand on their own. They begin and end with the criminals who commit them, not collectively with all the citizens of a state . . .”
This is the essence of a sociopathic philosophy that has the potential to affect not just sociopaths but also the inclinations and behaviors of otherwise decent folks. It insists that no one is accountable to anyone else, there is no community, no shared responsibility, there are no cause and effects to reason through, the Good Samaritan is the principal villain, the word citizen has no meaning, there is no way to collectively fix problems, and the only recourse to individual deviance is punishment and control. “You’re on your own, fuckers. Now go out and shop!”
Hilarious.
Does she realize she’s not an elected part of our government anymore? It’s impossible to commit a treasonous act against her?
What the fuck? This is just shamelessly self-indulgent. Does this woman have a fucking brain?
On edit, the last line is the best!
“It’s a bitter irony that this country shines brightest in tragedy.”
Her statement is false. This country shines brightest in triumph, not tragedy. But Palin wouldn’t know about that. Abandoning her gubernatorial office, losing on the presidential ticket, with policies that would be a tragedy for this country, the concepts of triumph and success are foreign to her. She can only think in terms of disaster and failure and tragedy. Her rhetoric, her concept of citizenship, her entire philosophy reflect this negativity, her tragic real perception of this country’s purpose. Thanks to people who think like her, this country has experienced far too much tragedy and failure in recent times, and far too little of the triumph and success that this country should enjoy. There’s no doubt she was born here, but Sarah Palin is far from a true or loyal American.
I’ll see that, and raise you
What an incredibly funny — and incredibly sad, because of its accuracy — “quote” from the Quitter.
In summation, I didn’t really know Gabby Giffords
Sarah you might not have known Gabby but you did know and endorse Jesse Kelly to run against her. The same Jesse Kelly who had the shoot an M-16 with Jesse to remove Gabby from office political fundraiser.
The Jesse Kelly who had ties to racist anti Semite groups? Although no links yet to the racist group Jared that put out the anti Semite racist newsletter Jared read. Tell me Sarah that reading that newsletter did not have any effect on why Jared decided to kill.
http://dccc.org/newsroom/entry/jesse_kelly_supported_by_groups_tied_to_white_supremacists_neo-nazis/
Jane obviously just ate some matzos of blood type Taibbi. Yummie.
And people think the right has a monopoly overheated political rhetoric…..Here you are suggesting that she should be terminated.
Sarah’s world is very small (along with her mind) and everything revolves around her. Everything! We can expect that she will continue to do this no matter what the incident is because she’s fighting for her political life now and she knows it.
From the real S.P. Facebook post
She will need to be reminded of this in the 2012 POTUS election when she brings back Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers.
Jane, I’ve told you before and I’ll tell you again: you rawk.
Jane, this is spot-on. I grew up with an abusive rage-drunk father and heard all these same justifications a thousand times over. I know now what they mean.
My personal favorite went something like this:
LOLOL!
Reagan made up a story and lied about a Black welfare mom who bought a Caddy and ate steak with fake welfare payments.
Just how many African Americans have been beaten up and killed by racists over the last few decades who believed him?
holy frigging crap, did sarah just say she suffered more then people dieing?…did she really say a 9 year old girl and a federal judge getting assinated was not as bad as the criticism against her?
doesn’t she get anyone to read this stuff before she says it?
if she didn’t end her political career by making believe she had surveyers cross hairs where she put gun sites, and if this didn’t end it further, then this country is beyond hope
(re-posted from my comment at DD’s earlier thread):
Anyone know if there’s anything to the rumors about the kingfishers in Alaska saying they wouldn’t prosecute Palin — something about how she bought her home? — if she resigned and beat a hasty retreat? Ain’t that obstruction of justice?
Excellent, Jane, excellent.
Wait is Sarah really arguing Reagan should be held responsible for all those deaths?/s
Yes, yes, it’s all about you isn’t it Sarah? Or should I say Joan (of Arc)? I think your speech was way better than her though Jane.
Life is too precious to spend any time on Sarah Palin. Sucker that I am,however, I just did. I think the press continues to just feed the troll. As they say, any publicity is better than no publicity. And FDL is playing Sarah’s game. Don’t feed the narcissist.
wow, quite a stretch there, saying she is a waste of oxygen means she should be terminated, this is your method for claiming equivilancy?
even if your interpretation is justified, (hardly), the difference would be that we have a person blogging vs a public figure in sarah palin who people follow as if she is the female masiah.
Sound of clapping hands and much gleeful laughter!! Thanks, Jane, for brilliant snark, even if the way you write is far too coherent even for the speech-writers who do all of the writing for Sarah Palin these days.
Indeed, this is how this flim-flam grifter is presented to the public. Ever the victim. Never responsible. Just the way her elite overlords wish to depict her. Oh, and always the sociopathic narcissist. It’s all about Sarah, just as it’s all about conservatives all the time.
Nailed it!
As did Jane.
With that performance, the Iron Law of Celebrity is one step closer to catching up to her. Celebrity inevitably leads to over-exposure which, in turn, leads the public to turn its short attention span to newer, younger, and flashier celebrities.
Cash in while you can, Sarah.
Giffords is Jewish, is this “blood libel” talking point another dog whistle?
Hmm, maybe it’s not such a good idea if she’s prosecuted and does time. She’ll just get herself a Rudolf Hess to ghost Mein Kvetch.
You rock, Jane!!I laughed so hard I think I wet myself…
I started writing it thinking “oh the snark’s just going to flow,” and it was so outrageous paragraph by paragraph there really wasn’t much further to go.
This is so believable, Jane, that some even on this thread seem to believe this really did come from SP.
Again, positively brilliant!
Outrage deflects substance. It is unfortunate that Palin can concoct a statement using the term “blood libel” which every liberal now feels compelled to explain while Palin crudely attempts an escape of sorts under the camoflage of an analysis of what is “blood libel”.
Thanks, Jane, for the truth and the fun. We surely needed a laugh.
Sarah Plain for President in 2012!!!
Will she run to bring back lynching (aka: Southern Attitude Adjustment)?
I need to laugh 0′lot.
Why should we care what Sarah Palin thinks is important to our great nation?
She’s a quitter, a money-grabbing opportunist, and a world-class moron.
Why can’t thoughtful people agree that she doesn’t deserve the attention that the media continues to give her?
Literary hyperbole was all it is. But Palin’s putrid CO2 is the real issue. She should cover her mouth, put a sac over her head, and go take a shit in the ocean.
That’s why I have a wooden desk chair. :)
That’s not what he suggested at all. He simply voiced the opinion that she has done nothing of worth in her life.
I disagree. At the very least she’s brought children into this world. And I believe people, for the most part, are inherently good.
Who cares if the Murderer was directly influenced by Sarah, Glen etc given his views on abortion, states rights, Gold is the only real money someone or someones connected to them did directly influence him.
The idea he independently got these ideas is as much legal cover as a saran wrap fig leaf.
That’s funny. I freaking love that.
At least we know she can use a teleprompter. That’s about all it takes to be Presidential these days.
Jane,
You made the smartest choice to simply post the transcription. Nothing needs to be said. Her words sink her all on her own.
Although, her speech writer’s abilities project an image of a Russian mole.
Tears in my eyes! Thanks! I needed some humor…and I also needed to know what “blood libel” is…
Well I can think of two dead giveaways that any reasonable person would spot this can’t be a Palin speech: First, it’s too coherent but you can’t do anything about that other than lobotomize yourself and second, there isn’t a single “you betcha” or “donchaknow” in the whole thing. It is a masterpiece of snark though and you captured her perfectly.
It was, at best, insensitive and tasteless.
Tina ought to let Jane hold her Emmy for a day.
Sarah really has an authoritarian persecution complex. Sarah and the whole GOP hate when we speak up or stand up to their lame bullying and then accuse us of hurting them???
Deep down they want to be victims and want us to feel sorry for them? Just how abused were they as kids?
Mom’s who were anxious during pregnancy producing anxious nervous authoritarian kids should get more research.
Let me see if I can manage a shorter “Sarah Palin”: Take responsibility. However, there is no responsibility to take. Evil is Evil. Criminals are Criminals. Leaving one with the forced conclusion of eradicating punishment for the “other.” This is the trajectory by which one arrives at an explanation of Loughner. A Christian for whom the Sermon on the Mount is anathema
Palin offers a better explanation for the connection and effects of the fear-mongering hate speech concomitant with the isolating and starkly dichotomous Good versus Evil worldview of the sociopath than one is likely to find anywhere else. “I, the truth, speak.”
And also tell her which end of the trophy is up.
uh oh the more we learn the more holes in the blame the media story…..
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/jared-loughners-friend-says-suspect-did-not-watch-tv-disliked-the-news_b48040
You damn betcha.
The focus is on her. What person in their right mind would paint themselves as a victim of a tragedy germinated in an environment of hatred she herself helped foster?
She displays all of the empathy of a snake in the grass.
With modern divorce laws, birth control and abortion freakanomics has shown that less criminals were born from unhappy homes.
Given the older skew to the TeaBaggers/GOP support I think less Authoritarians were born.
Don’t get your hopes up Dems because with Obama managing the economy like he was the third term of Bush well even well adjusted people have no reason to vote for him.
Thanks Jane. Saved me from a Photoshop session producing a “Help us survey Sarah” poster
Brilliant, Jane. It’s a keeper, like Tina Fey’s parody.
Are you saying Sarah didn’t say this? O no.
Probably just pure ignorance on the part of her writers, who thought the word “libel” would not suffice. But, forget not that the actual blood of an actual Christian 9 year old girl stained that parking lot.
Palin simply cannot resist the violence allusion.
Jane, good for you! Echanomics and I had a super sweet Palin conversation this morning. We both stated how sorry for Palin we felt. ;-)
We were hoping that MSM would pick it up and note that the Left is also sorry for Palin. HA!
Wait till somebody in the Palin camp sees this and accuses Jane of plagerliberalism.
Ding!
Would we expect any different from her?
And the winner is …
Sarah Palin
Sarah will now collect tons of money from her mindless fans because she is so abused and only money will fix it.
In 1965 I stood guard at Spandau Prison where Rudolph Hess and Karl White were the last of the Nazi convicted war criminals still alive. These names are no joke and the mention of them should bring revulsion to anyone who glorifies them. This is not intended to criticize you but just to set the record straight.
That lowlife peice of human excrement (Sarah Palin) was just on MSNBC spouting off. It convinced me to turn off the TV.
Keep peace in your hearts especially in times of tragedy. It is all around us.
It really is wood, oak, I think. The solid old office type with slates in the back and wheels on the bottom. There’s a little metal plate afixed to the back of the seat that says Douglas Aircraft. Maybe from the 40′s or 50′s.
Thanks for dropping by the Lake Sarah. BTW this post is to long, it won’t fit on both of your palms.
Shorter: ME ME and ME ME
With her ill considered blood libel remarks Sarah Palin has at long last jumped the proverbial moose.
As Jefferson Starship said in the opening line of Sarah: “Go now.”
When I read the title of this post I use my Don Pardo voice.
Her macaca moment or just one among many?
Ok. I’m sorry and please excuse my ignorance, but I showed up late to the party. I want to humbly ask if this is real? Did Palin actually say this, or was this a parody written by Jane?
That’s very patriotic of you.
And just how many years ago were the two in high school together? It would appear that since high school he’s made few, if any, friends. Ignored the kid next door’s attempts to form a friendship according the the kid’s dad.
Oh, that would be grat.
It is a parody. There’s a snark tag at the end.
Jane,
You are nicer than I am.
I would be honored. But I could only imagine what the master will do with this.
You should email this speech to FOX “News”. I’ll bet those pre-programmed pvc idiots on the morning show will run it as the real thing.
I thought so! Afterall, anything we say or do must always be solely about us, right? Oh well, the right can see now that we do feel sorry for Palin.
Sheesh!
I saw the tag, but it sounded so dead on I had to make sure.
Hint: Sarah says “pundints” – not “pundit” as it appears in this *speech*.
I find it interesting that Sarah’s concern for Gabby is that she may never be able to speak again. This is a real insight into Palin’s own most deep seated fear, to be never heard again.
As an Arizonan, I find her words cold and offensive to me.
blood plagerliberalism perhaps.
Thanks Jane. I read the bulk of her statement and it actually reads as you typed it. Well done.
That was EPIC!
Oops! Palin meet new shark
She shoulda just said macaca
It was a parody. A very, very clever one by Ms. Hamsher.
But do note the parody is not far from the reality…
http://www.ww4report.com/node/9317
A non profit I wonder who donates to them?
http://dccc.org/newsroom/entry/jesse_kelly_supported_by_groups_tied_to_white_supremacists_neo-nazis/
I’m waiting for her to say that the last few years have been a fugue (giving her total absolution for everything she’s said and done).
Well, since she doesn’t seem to be able to pour piss out of her shoe with the directions written on the stiletto heel I’d have to say one of many.
Oh yeah. As I said, really captured her.
Spectacular. Great work, Jane.
The “blood libel” comment, along with the equation of health care legislation with Hitler are revealing. People like Palin and Beck are obviously (and probably proveably) the children of the hardest of our hard-core anti-Semites. It’s why they are so eager to dilute the meaning of terms like “blood libel” or the historical understanding of Hitler. They’ve got to efface that part of their past in tandem with introducing their updated ideology of bigotry and incoherent paranoia.
Indeed. I remember the climate in the ’80s in the wake of this kind of nonsense from Reagan. His stories were taken seriously my many.
This quote, which Palin reiterates on Facebook, is a wedge by which citizens may be divested of their community, collective responsibility to one another, and their useful participation in a democratic system of government. A purely fascist meme.
If she says she’s been in a fugue, Todd will think she’s been cheating on him in Europe.
There’s no getting around it, as a ‘leader’ Palin green-lighted those killings.
It’s because Integrity can’t be maintained by quibble that leaders are held to the higher standard of being beyond even the appearance of impropriety.
She rabble-roused and put cross-hairs on Giffords…
…Giffords got shot by an extremist.
No amount of hair-splitting, ‘blood libel’ bright shiny objects or talk about our exceptional country can erase the associative connection between her talk and the shootings.
Literally speaking, she got what she asked for – and now she’s running from it like a coward.
Caribou Barbie just screwed the AIPAC pooch…
Jewish Groups: ‘We Are Deeply Disturbed’ By Palin’s Use Of Anti-Semitic Term ‘Blood Libel,’ She Should Apologize
Good luck on that prez run now…!
___
What I want is for some tort attorney to be able to document that Loughner dug Palin’s crosshairs map. And, that wouldn’t have shit to do with the First Amendment.
But but but, Sarah thought the term ‘blood libel’ was fungible.
I want the media to ak Sarah if she her statement means that she thinks Reagan should be held accountable for all the African American deaths he caused with his lies.
I want the Media to ask Sarah if she should now be held accountable.
Without directly comparing the current situation in the US to prewar Germany or other places, the suggestion that political rhetoric has no effect on a populace, that it has no role in fomenting violence is either pig-ignorance or propaganda.
To borrow from Mr. Beck and his incessant ranting on National Socialism, it’s useful to note that the Nazis were very adept at turning a significant portion of their population against the “other”. It was a keystone in their rise to power, something Beck manages to neglect in his bizarre Progressive = NAZI formulation. In more recent times, consider the well documented examples of ethnic cleansing in Yugoslavia and Rwanda. Seems to me whipping up the base on fears of existential threats posed by the “other” pretty much defines these horrors.
The more time passes; I find it harder to determine if Beck is the most cynical, callous performance artist of all time, or whether he is really the embodiment of a Howard Beale, a delusional, charismatic savant used by his corporate masters for political and financial gain. The question nags at me, but I suppose it’s a distinction without a difference.
Until the “responsible” journalists and the corporate interests that pay them begin to confront this stuff rather than co-opt or emulate it (CNN/MSNBC respectively) I see little hope. Cheer-leading for culture wars, drug wars and real wars is both entertaining and enormously profitable. It’s difficult to predict how bad things have to get (for enough people) before it starts to hurt the bottom line, or provoke a populist response the corporations and politicians cannot adequately control.
After all, Fox News is not the disease in American political culture, simply its most flagrant symptom. Popular journalism no longer represents the interests of a citizenry, but those of an ever-narrowing clutch of corporate owners. Until that somehow changes, tea-partiers and lefties will never be allowed to see how similar their human interests actually are, and who really stands in the way of their peace and prosperity.
For a while I figured the Internet might become the great equalizer, however, since Obama’s support for the net neutrality principle just got smothered by lobbyist cash, I’m no longer sanguine.
Blue Texan’s regularly scheduled post is up: Sarah Palin: Criticism of My Sniper Imagery and Gun Lingo is “Irresponsible,” “Reprehensible”
She’ll likely just double down yet again.
The Reagan quote and the “blood libel” term are why the Republicans love and hate Sarah – they love that she will go over the line and say what many of the Republicans wish they could say (and they use her quite well for this) and they hate that she exposes their beliefs, at the same time. Palin is a sad case – a stupid, mean girl who never matured beyond the age of 18.
“Democrat members” — you can HEAR that! Jane’s better than David Frye.
Can’t join you there. I’ll bet Loughner’s seen “Taxi Driver”, too. Ban it?
and your point is?
you do know, that FOX NEWS is not really news :)
so Jared probably watch phony FOX NEWS all day, or he may be old school and just listed to Beck on the Radio
HeadedWest
explain Jesse Kelly? please tell us all how he is not a NUT
Okay. I thought this was her actual statement. Label me a dumbass.
It seems Sarah endorsed a racist, uses violent language herself but claims the shooter was not influenced by her directly. But given the shooter’s Tea Bagger views it does seem he agrees with Sarah and every racist on the issues.
OY VEY !!!!!
Seconded!
Thanks Jane! You took the real words right out of Palins mouth!! Best of all you didnt need to use a tele-prompter or jot the words Blode libal on your hand.
Straw Man. This is not about people arguably incited by a work of fiction. This is about someone alluding to the need for actual political opponents to be shot.
I don’t think you’re a dumbass – I just think Jane wrote a brilliant piece.
Unfortunately, it plays well to folks with little power over their own lives. “I am like you,” says Palin. Another page from the Reagan playbook: Dress yourself up like a cowboy Mr. Smith. It also contains an element of self-flagellation as the isolated, hyper-individualized victim is confined to dewll on their own Sin as an explanation for their lot in life–well, at least in the absence of an Evil “other” to beat up in pursuit of purification.
Sarah number 1 number 2 and numer 3 fans Obama, Axelrod, and Plouffe are pissed at Sarah for doing this.
Obama and Axelrod are disgusted the main reason they brought the GOP back to life was to run against Sarah Palin.
Nah, youse just wasn’t payin’ close enough attention. *g*
misswildthing–
lovely sentiments . . . sorry, but I MUST save (and share) your last line!
She’s approaching perfection asymptotically.
It is a damn brilliant piece of snark. And it encapsulates Caribou Barbie so well. Alas, I was misled.
Palin deserves to have lived in Paris in the Summer of 1940. Up close and personal.
Makes perfect sense. And the authority-lovers kowtow to the Mean Girl. The nerds and geeks smile when the she is taken down a peg.
What is the difference between Beck and Joe Pyne or Alan Burke if you are aware of those luminaries?
IMHO, MickSteers, this rant deserves a diary of its own. Why don’t you write it up and try it sometime (so the saying goes, anyway).
Isnt it a conflicting position that Palin has put herself into? First shes all in an uproar because People are Claming her words might incite nuts like Loughner to violence. Dismissing that causation as ridiculous. Then she goes on to state the criticism of her may be the cause of Violence. In short; Her Incitement to Violence – No causation the idea is ridiculous, Then she makes an about face and claims Criticism of her or “her Incitement” can lead to violence. Mind Boggling. I guess IOKIYAR!
Excellent post, love the satire.
Gotta save this one!
So raising more ignorant, hateful, rascist children is a good thing? I wish I had your optimism
That is the general wingnut circular rhetorical problem. Inflammatory political speech alluding to the need for violent action against opponents is not dangerous, BUT calling critical attention to that rhetoric IS.
More generally, w/respect to this bullshit 1st Amendment beg-off: Grab a photo of the White House or the President. Photoshop
surveyor’s marksgunsight crosshairs on it. Post it on the internet. See who visits you in short order.Well I’m sorry bringing children into the world doesnt do it any more then telling us about all the children goebbels brought into the world. By the way he was a loving father when he murdered all of them.
racist
You are so right. I can only imagine what would happen if a muslim posted that exact target list on his FB page! KNOCK KNOCK lets take a little trip to Guantanamo!
Why does Faux Noise allow Jonah Goldberg on to defend the Jews (kinda) and not mention Snowbilly Grifter is a anti-semite and his wife is her ghost-writer?
Inconvenient news item:
-Zach Osler (reportedly Jared Loughner’s best high-school friend) in ABC “Good Morning America” interview
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/jared-loughners-friend-says-suspect-did-not-watch-tv-disliked-the-news_b48040#
Those kids will have an opportunity to make their own way in the world.
You’re right, I guess; well argued. I just wouldn’t go so far as saying it was incitement to violence. I really feel like it was an incitement to threaten. Without a doubt, though the general incitement from the right made a political murder more likely.
C’mon you guys, I’m sure we need to give poor Sarah a break. After all, I’m sure her heart was in the right place when she was inciting violence against Obama at her campaign rallies and I’m more than positive she meant no harm putting up shotgun cross hairs on those Democratic districts. She didn’t get the memo:
http://www.uslaw.com/pop/rightwing-extremism-current-economic-and-political-climate-fueling-resurgence-in-radicalization-and-recruitment/?p=181
Inconvenient news?
Why do we take every little snippet and turn it into some kind of ammunition for one side or another. We are gonna get a lot of STUFF tossed in the air from now on. Some will turn out to be true, some half true, some false, some half false. This school friend is telling her STORY thats all. I dont see how inconvenient fits.
Or I should say, fueling extremism in the political climate during her campaign rallies.
Sarah,
I am so pleased you took the time to ‘splain things here before such a hostile audience.
May the Republic be saved by your grace, and may a statue of YOU eventually replace the one of Eleanor Roosevelt, now perched on the capitol dome in Washington.
I’m new to this site and don’t usually bother to read anything that has to do with Palin, I keep hoping if we ignore her enough she will just go away. But this article is priceless. Love the satire!
I prefer to err on the side of the First Amendment in considering the target map, though I want to see as many public figures as possible loudly place the moral, as opposed to legal, blame on Palin and the tea-partiers. But put things in perspective; we don’t have a lot of political killings; one or two here and there seem to be the price we pay for that First Amendment freedom, while an order of several thousand more are the wearisome price we pay for the freedom the Second Amendment gives. Meanwhile, the country is on collective killing sprees in Iraq and Afghanistan; I’m less disturbed to see that at home, in places like Arizona, we’re the same country of rage-filled fetishists and fantasists we’ve always been.
I decry this escalating practice of allusive, tangential incitement to “threaten” political opponents, and while I’m no fan of using the tort system to push back at free speech, crossing the line from the “merely” threatening to actual violence is all too easy.
There’s probably not gonna be any actionable emergent evidence linking Loughner to “crosshairs.” It will suffice for me, as a practical matter, if this “blood libel” thing is Palin’s torpedo below the waterline. I am not one bit sanguine about the threat she poses to the nation. This was — I hope — her real gift to the nation, this one. A real doozy.
Exquisite Parody lives!
Why, I merember when nuance was officially declared extinctulated.
Jane, you is gonna git a reputation fer puttin’ words in Sarahterms.
(Of course you string them together with far greater facility and with a screamingly accurate irony …)
I admit, I read the piece, looked at the dog and laffed for five minutes before I could decompose meself sufficiently to manage writing … ANYTHING.
You is gonna be accusulated of gosh-awful stuff, Jane …
Heh, heh, heh.
;~DW
Hilarious, Jane! About the only thing you left out was the image of Michael Moore and Jane Fonda lashing her to a crucifix while the members of SEIU and MoveOn.Org stoned her with copies of Mein Kampf…all the while George Soros is washing his hands in dismay.
I would also like this “blood libel” libel to open up a public exploration into the overtly anti-Semitic antecedents of Palin and Beck.
Uh, no, that’s in retching bad taste, unlike Jane’s Twainian snark.
The general argument is more along these lines:
Leftwingers maintain that Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, and O’Reilly are largely to blame for the Tucson shootings because they have said and/or clearly implied that those responsible for adoption of legislation that they deplore — e.g., members of Congress who voted for Obamacare — should be physically attacked. But i) they have neither said nor implied any such thing and ii) there is no evidence that Loughner was inspired by anything that any of them did say or anything he thought they said.
That comment “tops” it off, to an incredibly perfect “tee”, stevo67.
Superb!
;~DW
It’s “matzoh”.
How sad that narcissist Sarah will never get Jane’s point.
Ms. Palin is a performance artist whose only reaction is the Rovian one of doubling down on any behavior she’s accused of, and like Bush, claiming she knew what she was doing all along, that’s it’s really the right thing to do, and that anyone who sees it differently is mistaken, misinformed, and out to get her for purely partisan advantage (which describes her to a T). Great formula for making a million, at least when a few billionaire rightwingers think she’s got great legs, dontchyaknow.
Copy that.
You’ll have to spell that for Sarah; she probably thinks it’s what she should take when she has a cold.
Or what the intended outcome of Reagan’s and her rhetoric is (as another FDL commenter has suggested recently). Did they intend nothing? And if not, to what degree is a politician responsible for their framing, persuasion and advice? If they are not responsible are we then to consider them powerless? A worldview that posits Good and Evil as essential, individual conditions for which there is no social remedy or collective responsibility begs the question, “What then is the purpose of public political speech?” What goes along with a fundamentalist ideology that sees the world in terms of Good and Evil is that “reality” leaves little room for action, thought or choice. Political “leaders” expect no one to act on their public pronouncements? They want the power and rhetorical benefits of the Good v. Evil meme but none of the responsibility for this perspective’s consequences to society? Well, I guess if society can’t be faulted according to Reagan and Palin, then they, likewise, can’t be faulted for shaping society . . . ?
Edi:
“Ms. Palin is a performance artist whose only reaction is the PavRovian one…”
Thank you Jane and everyone else, i haven’t laugh so hard in long time.
Let’s not forget that Mr. Obama is in the process or proposing rules that would require – require – a government-issued license to use the Internet.
Like a driver’s license, it would make clear that use of the digital highway is a privilege, not a right, that the government could withdraw for violating its rules of the road.
Sarah Palin is a blatherskite who is obviously unelectable to the office of POTUS. Nominating her for that office on the 2012 Republican ticket is the best gift anyone could possibly give to Obama and the Democratic Party.
On the other hand, blaming her for the Tucson shootings is absurd.
Where is punaise when wanted?
She’s not being blamed for explicitly motivating Loughner to commit murder. She’s being blamed for being a stellar example, along with Beck, Limbaugh, Coulter and a passel of GOP officials, for freely using violent, death-dealing imagery as if acting out those images would be a responsible thing for a “sovereign citizen” to do when they felt their “rights” or existence were threatened by a government that, by definition, is the problem and threat, not a part of the cure.
OH! shhhhhhhhhhhhhh. so ashamed of you, i am. heh.
Just whos General argument are you posing? It seems to me you are posing the wingnuts false argument. In fact they are deliberating changeing the argument the left is making to avoid the issue. Palin and her cohorts know exactly what the argument is and they know they are guilty of promoting violence. This is why they are so defensive and aggressive to the extent of threating violence against those who press the issue.
Blaming her is an appropriate political response to her incendiary political speech. Pundits have given the “blame game” a bad name, at least when it comes to blaming Republicans.
Great comment!
One of the fascinating things about the rhetoric from many on the right is that words like fascist, communist, democracy, family, liberal, conservative, progressive, Christian, anarchist, (well the list goes on) do not actual function as descriptions; their definitional meanings are irrelevant. Rather, they are used as categories in order to determine whose side one is on (e.g. democracy, family) and as ad hominem attacks (e.g. liberal, socialist). The destruction of language is part of the destruction of thought.
it is very hard to believe but the females in the Repuk party are nothing but a bunch of DIP SHITS
Unfortuantely, I think that for many of Palin’s worshipful authoritarian followers (see some of the comments on her Facebook page) these glaring contradictions are unnoticed and irrelevant. If they like the conclusions, how one got there is unimportant.
He lept from to contributing an atmosphere of hostility and incitement via allusion to “largely to blame.” Pretty weak. I, for one, never claimed the latter.
So now Sarah say she is the victim and forgets about the 20 who were shot and the 6 who died and never once mention that her cross hairs oh survey symbols could have caused this nut to do his dirty deed which led to the death of a 9 year old school girl. keep up the good work Sarah the right wingers love you.
Copy that. Were I to “Like” her FB page, I’d probably last all of 10 seconds before being blocked. Only her Choir need apply.
I don’t know, but it might be important for a liberal, when blaming someone for their actions, to get it right about what those actions instigated, what they contributed to instigating, and what they had a tangential, if any, effect on. Just thinking out loud.
The destruction of civil society requires that words lose meaning … and thereby the power to reach both hearts and minds, otto, words must be turned into little but hammers or empty nothings for sociopaths to control the thoughts of people … and thus, the world …
DW
Sarah Palin apparently cannot refrain from portraying herself as a helpless victim, even in the midst of a tragedy that her crosshairs-on-a-congresswoman imagery helped to foment. No responsibility whatsoever…
http://www.sunstateactivist.org/ssablog/
It’s more a case of the establishment needing to suppress “blame”, i.e., investigations of crimes and blunders, like the invasion of Iraq, say.
I guess there have been many of his ilk.
I find Limbaugh very predictable, all bluster and bullshit. Being in soviet cannuckistan, I don’t get all the radio talkers, except as mentioned in the blogs or webcasts.
I find watching Beck painful, but oddly compelling. As soon as he opens his mouth, I find myself trying (and failing) to picture how any sentient being could actually countenance his performance. How is it possible to look so earnest and sincere when you are saying you’ve never uttered violent speech, on or off the air? (Poisoning Pelosi, strangling Michael Moore, mock immolation of someone on air……the mind boggles).
But in answer to your question, the only thing I can think of is reach. This guy reportedly has the White House (or an Agriculture Secretary) firing staff in fear of his name (Voldermort)! How can this psychopath/performance artist have so much influence in a country as large, diverse and powerful as the US?
LOL
And to take a perfect example of that, from Charles Krauthammer’s column today, not coincidentally titled “Massacre, then libel“:
(Of course he doesn’t mention that that editor supported that invasion)
“Our exceptional nation, so vibrant with ideas and the passionate exchange and debate of ideas, is a light to the rest of the world.”
Still waiting to see the Sarah who is “vibrant with ideas.” Vibrant with stupidity is more like it.
Actually the general argument is that a conservative (authoritarian personality type) is more predisposed to act out violently (strict father model) against people who to them, are ‘other.’
Below are the first of five violent incidents in a list of eighteen from just the last two and a half years, in which most, if not all of them, were inspired and incited to carry out these actions by the hate speech on talk radio and/or Fox News
Much more at Dave Neiwert’s blog
Maybe Loughner was psychotic and just happened to come across Gifford’s event and had absolutely no idea who Glen Beck and Sarah Palin are, but the odds are more than likely that he’ll be added to the list above
One of the self crippling features of the Liberal mind is its need to be factual and accurate. As a result they it is overwhelmed by the shitstorm of lies, misdirections, convoluted arguments etc. from the right. Lining up all your duck serves no purpose if theyre just shot out of the water no matter how well they are positioned.
x2
It’s always about Sarah isn’t it?
I think that confuses Mr. Obama’s unwillingness, his inability to fight for what he claims to support, with the liberal preference for facts and truth over followership and tribal loyalty.
I am so glad you included Tammy Bruce…another Mean Girl who doesn’t get enough attention for her mean approach. Mrs. Obama is a very favorite target for her slimy mocking. She is too often left off the list of cruel speech purveyors.
Well, that’s a start, John. Now please quote statements from Palin, O’Reilly, Beck, and/or Limbaugh that a reasonable person could construe as either incting or condoning those (or similar) crimes.
Fail. The woman is as useful as three-legged jeans. You think that means I want to kill her? Correction, EPIC fail.
Not going chapter and verse because I’m busy, but about David Adkisson
If you click on the links in my comment above, whatever you need is probably there
If the “death-dealing imagery” you’re referring to is the now-famous map with superimposed cross-hairs, what Palin was obviously conveying was merely that Tea Partiers and other like-minded people should put high priority on defeating Blue-Dog Dems who voted for Obamacare in the mid-term elections of 2010. BFD
So what was the purpose of the three red targets? Why red? What possible innocent explanation can there be for that?
It wasn’t, and if that’s your interpretation of the Palin cross-hairs map and similar imagery by Beck, Limbaugh, Coulter, et al., I have an eye on land in Florida that you’ll want; it’s dry twice a day and you needn’t sink a well on it very far to have it fill with water.
I clicked your link. All I learned from it is that that a nut shot two people in a Unitarian church because he believed all “liberals” should be killed, and the police found copies of books by Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, and Bill O’Reilly in his house. Does that prove that those authors said anything in those books (or elsewhere) that a reasonable person could construe as advocating murder of liberals or commission of other violent crimes against liberals? No, it doesn’t.

Your reading comprehension skills are sorely lacking if you can’t figure this out.
Someone who construes the following Glen Beck commentary as a “winking” incitement to violence is your idea of a credible source?!
Tremendously funny and sad at the same time, Jane ..so sad that Sarah is the center of attention but that is what feeds the social morass .. anyone who thinks the rhetoric spouted by either side, tho used even “tongue-in-cheek” terms that purport violence in the name patriotism or liberty, are blinded by their own agenda whether they admit it or not .. American exceptional-ism my arse!! .. even Media wankers like Chris Matthews spout crap about how you have a black leader and how “this could only happen in America” ..
Nonsense .. what DOES happen in America far too often, and much more often per ca pita than any other Western Democracy, is what happened in Tuscon .. and anyone who hides from that reality is deluding them self

Not explicit, but 24/7/365 rhetoric has consequences on the disturbed
This discussion is very boring
Newsflash: the world is round
Interesting method. Attack a person, then, when they defend themselves, attack them for defending themselves. Accuse them of things, and then when they defend themselves, accuse them of, essentially, defending themselves.
Unfortunately, it is quite transparent, and so not very effective in trying to bring the person down. Please think of something more creative and less obvious.
Basic message: Don’t disagree with what we say. Don’t disagree with our policies. Don’t disagree with our ideas. Take it and go along.
These shootings or killings occured before Sarah Palin, before Rush Limbaugh, before Teddy Roosevelt, before George Washington, before Julius Ceasar and likely before the first caveman.
the acorn don’t fall far from the tree. You really are an optimist though
