MUELLER: FBI bigfooting this one now. Expects a filing in federal court this afternoon in the case.
Do not believe the photo they released today was necessarily part of the shooting, but need to talk to him as a witness.
Gun purchased in November last year, a Glock 9mm.
Now a joint investigation, working out of one command center since late yesterday afternoon. Wow, Muller really swept in like lightening and made sure Dupnik wasn’t talking much any more.
Suspicious package sent to Giffords’ office did not contain explosives, but too early to report that it was not tied to the shooting incident. Need to test for fingerprints, etc.
With regard suspect Jared Loughner’s postings, the FBI will be looking at them to see if he or any of his associates present a threat, but does not believe at this time that they do.
Indication that Loughner attended a similar event with Giffords in 2007. Muller thinks the details of that will come out in the legal proceedings.
Premature to say what the motivations were as to the individual in this case, but the ubiquitous nature of the internet means that hate speech and other inciteful speech is more available to peole than it was 10-15 years ago and that presents a challenge for the FBI. Especially when it’s lone offenders. Muller’s “blame the internet” quite a different tune than Dupnik speaking yesterday — radio and TV pundits.
Photo that has been released of second suspect is someone in Safeway, close to the man who has been detained.
How to increase security against such threats is something that is being discussed in the halls of Congress now. Capitol Police, Sargent at Arms working with members of Congress to discuss what steps may be taken.
Charges filed today based on the shooting of the Congresswoman, the killing of the staffer and Judge Roll. Does not preclude “terrorism charges” (Muller’s words) being filed in the future.
DUPNIK: Twenty people shot, six deceased. Woman is the first person to approach Loughner after the shooting. Loughner was reloading, and was able to insert magazine. She was injured but grabbed him to stop him. Then two men grabbed him.
More satisfied in their own minds that the “second suspect” not involved in the crime, but they still need to talk to him as a witness. Based on information that they have developed since last night they now think he may not have been involved. Still do not know who he is.
Threats against law enforcement by Loughner have been within recent months.
First magazine had 31 bullets, as did the second he was reloading.
There was correspondence between Giffords’ office and Loughner regarding the 2007 event, and he was apparently invited.
Judge was very close to Giffords when he was shot.
On his “Freedom of speech does not come without consequences” comment from last night — “I think that when the rhetoric about hatred, about mistrust of government, about paranoia of how government operates, and to try to inflame the public on a daily basis 24 hours a day, 7 days a week has an impact especially on people who are unbalanced personalities to begin with.”
Did Loughner’s history of problems with the law come up on the background check when he went to buy the gun? Dupnik does not know.
Does not advocate letting everyone have a gun at any time, thinks it’s ridiculous that the AZ legislature won’t let colleges make their own rules.
