Within three hours of the unannounced demolition beginning, two containers were unloaded onto the site for use by the settlers. Security guards also erected a white corrugated iron barrier around the perimeter, already protected by a fence and barbed wire.
The demolition comes just days before Bibi Netanyahu plans to fly to Washington to discuss renewing peace talks with Obama, peace talks that ended when Israel would not stop the establishment of just such settlements. This timing is pretty reminiscent of the decision of Israelis to approve settlements at the start of Vice President Biden’s visit last March.
Only a few days after Biden’s 2010 trip, Irving Moskovitz, the Florida based settlement funder, received Israeli government approval for the demolition and at the time a spokesperson for the Obama administration said:
“We believe this is a final-status issue, and that both sides should refrain from acts that could undermine trust or prejudge the outcome of negotiations. We are seeking clarification on this and other issues from the Israelis,” the official added.
Today, Secretary of State Clinton – who is beginning a tour around the Middle East to try to get Gulf countries to support American sanctions on Iran – criticized the demolition as “disturbing”:
“This disturbing development undermines peace efforts to achieve the two-state solution,” Clinton said in a statement in Abu Dhabi, where she is on an official visit.
“In particular, this move contradicts the logic of a reasonable and necessary agreement between the parties on the status of Jerusalem.”
It’s worth noting how different this mealymouthed statement is from that of Catherine Ashton, the foreign policy chief of the EU:
“I strongly condemn this morning’s demolition of the Shepherd Hotel and the planned construction of a new illegal settlement. I reiterate that settlements are illegal under international law, undermine trust between the parties and constitute an obstacle to peace,” said Ashton in an official statement.
“We recall that East Jerusalem is part of occupied Palestinian territory; the EU does not recognize the annexation by Israel,” she added.
Sheikh Jarrar resident Nasser Jawi was even more succinct:
Israeli actions, said resident Nasser Jawi, were “torpedoing the peace process”.
The Shepherd hotel is an iconic structure in East Jerusalem:
The hotel was declared “absentee property” by Israel after it captured and annexed East Jerusalem. The title was transferred to an Israeli firm, which sold it in 1985 to Irving Moskowitz, a Florida bingo king and patron of Jewish settlers.
Adnan Husseini, the Palestinian Authority-appointed mayor of Jerusalem, said knocking down the historic building was an “act of barbarism”.
His family claims ownership of the property and had been using the Israeli courts to challenge the steps that had led to its sale.
Israel’s decision to thwart legal attempts to stop the demolition – and go ahead at precisely this time certainly makes Mr Jawi’s words look like the most precise.

Mrs Clinton’s lame ass statement will be all we hear from The Empire on this.
In her diplomacy world what does the “disturbing” word mean? Any intensity? Im guessing it does not mean outrageous or illegal…Even close?
I expect her to apologize monday.
Well, it certainly does not mean we might pull some of our funding for Israel until they shape up, eh?
This is bad, and bad faith. Netahanyu treats the US the way republicans do: as a source of money, with no duties in return.
Isn’t funding illegal acts even if done by a nation terrorism? Shouldn’t we be cutting off Israel’s funds? Just how many war crimes has Israel committed in the last 10 years?
Yep – and as I was looking at it, I kept thinking of the chasm between the bold truthtelling of Sheriff Dupnik and the lame comments from Obama et al.
Hilary is being made to look weak to the Left and mean to Israel I guess she won’t be running for President ever. Just why did she take this job?
And why is some American Bingo King allowed to dabble in these international affairs….Because he can, I guess.
Again with sanctions on Iran. If Clinton would like some support for that or anything else from other nations in the Middle East (or anywhere else), she ought to try calling for sanctions against Israel. As long as the US does not vehemently oppose Israeli aggression, it might as well be the US government tearing down buildings and evicting residents in East Jerusalem. It’s really depressing to US citizens and people the world over to watch the US government once again take sides with the most brutal, oppressive regimes we can find (or install). I guess AIPAC must hand out giant wads of cash to Congress and the executive branch to buy their support. It’s all about money, and it’s ONLY about money. Unfortunately, it’s probably OUR money, our tax dollars which were handed over to Israel as “foreign aid”, then recycled via AIPAC back into the pockets of Congress as “campaign contributions” (i.e., bribes).
He paid for a war crime he is a terror sponsor he should go to jail he is like the Nazi’s who bought Jewish homes cheap after the SS took the Jews away.
His family should be ashamed Israel should build high rise apartments if they need space stealing other people’s homes is wrong.
“…a little.”
three dot journalism…Love it, Siun!~ :o)
You’re a baaad lady. :o)
Its even more depressing when we look at the track record for keeping evil governments in power what happens 50 years later. Our allies always get overthrown and never become strong nations.

I’m a serious ellipses addict I have to admit.
“Just why did she take this job?”
Good question.
Maybe because she would have her own fiefdom in what was (wrongly, very wrongly…) expected to be a powerhouse administration with an historic opportunity to effect some badly needed changes in this country, whereas, if she turned it down, she was the junior Senator from New York, who just lost an election that she was expected to win, who was $30 million in debt.
And whatever happened to that debt? Did Obama help her retire it?
On and on it goes with no end. It started with the transfers under the Ottoman Empire from whom deeds to property were obtained by Zionists to displace Palestinians. The hotel property “transaction” is quite in keeping with this beginning.
Maybe so, but you don’t duck the tough issues, and, my 2c, I think that’s waycool. :o)
By the way, I hope folks are following the posts GorillasGuides are putting up weekly at MyFDL providing an introduction to Islam. The authors are Islamic scholars and they are working very hard to go step by step so we get a full view. In the comments, they’re answering our questions and the discussions have been great – and they come back the following few days in case they miss any questions.
Here’s today’s:

Excuse me, Hillary didn’t lose an election, she lost a nomination that she was expected to win. Accuracy…accuracy.
I emailed links to the first 9-10 parts to the hosts of True Talk on WMNF, a talk show about the Middle East and hosted by an Egyptian man and a Palestinian woman. I’m disappointed that I’ve not heard back from them.
Thanks for doing that!
I was thumpin’ meself for not doing it sooner. Ahmed and Samar seem to be paying more attention to the show’s FB page than email. I’m gonna email ‘em during the show next Friday with a heads up.
Agreed but why is she keeping this job then we know she wants to run for President. We know she wants to impact history being Obama’s Bitch and doing his dirty work is not what she signed up for.
I’m not sure why all of these comments are so anti israel. If israel can just remove these recalcitrant Palestinians from the contentious territories, real peace talks can begin. It just means removing all of the Palestinians from every square foot of territory that israel considers theirs, as well as any territory in Lebanon or Syria that they may covet for “security” reasons. We know that the israeli government and the idf would not do anything that was not of the highest moral caliber.
I expect Clinton to announce her resignation shortly. Can’t have her going off the reservation like that.
Maybe she did it so she can run against The Tool.
Hmmm…not sure I would support her either. Much more likely to than Obama though.
If she would go Left this time I would vote for her in the Primary.
“highest moral caliber”
This is why we have given them $114 billion dollars over the years.
They reflect the same “high moral caliber” as our own (U.S.) government.
All of them warm, loving people.
http://wrmea.org/component/content/article/245-2008-november/3845-congress-watch-a-conservative-estimate-of-total-direct-us-aid-to-israel-almost-114-billion.html
I really think we should redesign the American flag to replace the 50 stars with 50 Stars of David to accurately reflect our status as a client state of Israel.
Obama’s legacy peace process is moving right along.. Hillary’s “not helpful” is upgraded to “disturbing” for the destruction of iconic buildings on occupied territory. I hope she threw the back of her hand up to her forehead in a dramatic fashion when she said that.
This is ethnic cleansing of the history of the Palestinians. Pathetic.
Actually, Israel acts as if we are one giant ATM – and we let them.
I think there are a lot of people who would welcome that, entirely without irony.
I think that would REALLY piss off the citizens of Arizonistan.
Somebody might get killed…
Question: How many Israeli soldiers gave their lives in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Maybe the answer is none, because they were too busy killing almost defenseless Arab men women and children and expanding their real estate land grab. Same old same genocide. Thanks Hillary, you can join the hall of infamy with Kissinger, Albright, Holbrooke, etc., etc. Soon we will be bringing our brand of democracy to Iran. It might cost thousands of lives but what the hell we will pay for it out of Social Security. By the way Barry is the Commander in Chief of all this debauchery.
Right on, good one.
No doubt it will be “determined” that he was a terrorist anyway:
These people are deplorable.
Oh, that makes it all okay then.
The IDF isn’t going to go anywhere where there are large numbers of people with guns who aren’t fond of the IDF or any other foreign invader. The IDF prefers killing old men, women and children on the pretext of seeing an Arab with a gun.
I believe they’ve taken an advisory role in those matters.
However there are reports of Israeli advisors with US troops in the Kurdish areas of Iraq – and some reported as interrogators in US prisons in Iraq.
Already done.
That doesn’t surprise me.
If she bails early, she has no chance of winning the nomination. Too many Obama followers would be outraged. Hard to blame them, after he gave her State.
Of course, if she waits too long to distance herself from him, then she’s tarred with his failures, and that’s a big problem with the voters.
There is the possibility that his numbers in mid-2012 will be so low that’ he’ll be pressed into doing an LBJ, and if that happens, it’s Ollie-Ollie-in-free. And then there’s Biden…
The situation is fraught. :o)
Things;
I think and HOPE that she’s got some people who are exponentially smarter that Mark Penn and Terry McAuliffe, the engineers of her political crash. If she does, they’ll tell her that nothing has changed with republicans: they loathe her as much as they ever did, and that, coupled with the blowback from a resignation to run at Obama, would doom her chances at the nomination.
Again, if Obama does an LBJ, then it’s an open field, but I think for democrats, nominating Hillary would be out of the frying pan into the fire. We need a new face, and one that will confront the GOP, instead of schmoozing with them. We’re getting enough of that from Obama.
Another slap to the face by the israelis, the U S has been encouraging the israelis for over 40 years, overlooking evry crime they have committed, vetoed every condemnation at the U N,the U S has wasted billions in aid to israel and our prestige has suffered with our “israel can do no wrong policy”, just look at where we are and what has happened in the last 40 years, supporting a racist apartaid regime for fear of being labeled anti-semitic, the israeli lobby aipac has been leading this country by the nose far too long. Nothing will be resolved and we will continue to waste wealth and blood, Iraq, Afghanistan, where next?, Iran?, Syria?, Lebanon?. we have become the lap dog of israel.
A bit of detail : The “historic” Shepherd hotel was built in the 1930s by the mufti of Jerusalem Haj Muhammad Amin al-Husseini (1921- 1948), and was bought in 1985 by American millionaire Irving Moskowitz. As to the rest of the settlement area, lawyers for the Jewish families involved in the dispute argued that documents from the Ottoman Empire show that a Jewish Sephardic organization had purchased the land in question in the 19th century.
The documents are valid.
The Palestinians claim the words should be read to mean the Ottoman Empire rented – not sold – the area.
The court ruled this “rent” reading was invalid.
Historic Arab occupation seems to be dated back a few decades to a Jordanian settlement of 26 families in the area. The court ruled the families had indefinite renters rights to stay as long as they paid the rent. The families a few years ago decided to not pay the rent – losing their rental rights.
Beyond the above (noting that all land disputes never end with claims of fraud and mistaken interpretation the standard response to any decision), I agree a portion of East Jerusalem must be treated as the eventual capital of Palestine – and efforts in the EU and by Clinton are going on to make that more formal before a peace agreement. BiBi may be getting more than a slap on the wrist from Clinton – but we will see if Obama pulls Clinton back so as to give BiBi free rein and thereby please the GOP.
I agree – besides the left turned on Hillary and pushed a center-right black fellow so as to not nominate her. She owes nothing to the left – except her views are center left – indeed well left of Bill Clinton.
I don’t see the left pushing her – heck, the old Obama lies and smears against Hillary (and against Bill), despite being easily disproved, are still published on left wing sites. Blacks deserted her and now get annoyed at the idea of a challenge against Obama – seeing it as racist.
Obama will be the 2012 candidate in an election where the results will have little to do with advancing or stopping the progressive agenda.
My problem with Clinton isn’t left or center, my problem is being a corporatist. She wants to run, show me she won’t bend over backwards for big buck campaign contributors.
And I say that as someone who voted for her only once for Senator. I cried the day she voted for the MBNA written gift to credit card companies that was supposedly a bankruptcy reform bill. That someone who knew this was disastrous and wrong as First Lady puts her seal of approval on it just a few years later let me know she was running for President and had sold her services to the highest bidder.
Her biggest problem isn’t left or right, it is who owns you baby.
