Dudley Moore and The Electric Mayhem — How High The Moon, from episode 407 of The Muppet Show.
What’s on your mind?
Evening Suz, from the land of the frozen lakes.
Damn, Suz… bittersweet.
hey nonq — how ya doing tonight?
hey newton — how’s the west bay tonight? i was impressed with dudley’s piano playing — i had totally forgotten his musical stuff
Every time I see Dudley Moore this tune always pops into my head…! ;-)
Awww, nice. I love playing that tune so much.
aloha tut — how’s paradise tonight?
He was a star…
hey kelly — how’s denver tonight?
hey ce — how’s ohio tonight?
Hi Suzaroo – still overly warm here.
Assuming facts not in evidence, namely that I have one.
steph sent me her forecast for monday — tis -10
A chilly, blustery day, all day…! However, I shall not bitch about it…! ;-)
hey ecahn — how ya doing tonight?
Hey,all. The winds passed through with vim and vigor and nothing fell down. I’ll take a “local’s” view over Accuweather every time. :]
hey openhope — tis good news :) how’s that beer?
Just stayed up a bit late, economic outlook sucks, and congress continues avoiding doing anything substantial to help hurting citizens.
I’m doing OK, though, and you too, I trust.
i am — just gotta keep putting one foot in front of another and keep on going in spite of the forkers
Thinkin’ it’s getting time to retire. Gonna throw another log in the woodstove & z out. Night owls!
Dud could play.
Waiting for the “storm” in Cleveland. Pretty beautiful here today with snow sprinkles. Each day prediction is two to four inches — six to ten inches total. Not so much here in the land of Cleve. 80% chance of snow all day long.
Bottled and fermenting for 5 [?] weeks. My job has been terminated. :] Actually, not quite. There was an extra 1 cup leftover. I squirreled it away for beer batter onion rings. It’s a Porter.
Watching a repeat of PBS News hour from earlier, talking about long termed unemployed and no one seems to be able to bring themselves to say age discrimination. Oops one pundit just said “age,” but not in terms of, “discrimination,” in hiring.
no ice today?
Hey CE – how did CEjr’s hand surgery go?
oh yum! beer batter makes just about anything better
It’s not about age. Most of the youngbloods I know are either unemployed, underemployed, or working off the books on odd jobs. We need to find out what’s happening outside of our comfort/social zone. IMO
None, but it was trying really hard.
How many bottles did ya make…?
Oh love, thanks for asking. The hand specialist opened the wound, repaired the tendon and some nerve endings. He gives it a 50/50 chance of repair. My mothering instinct makes me cry.
Been recording a bunch of Cat Stevens tonite, and in keeping with the theme tonight, here;s a link:
Yeah, but the dipping is a big part of it. I just can’t do ketchup. Well, ketchup reigns, but there has to be more interesting dips.
we just had a big (for the size of our company) layoff on monday. All but one of the workers were a long-time employees, middle-aged, good workers. Fuck. (the exception was a 30′s-something incompetent, no one was sorry to see him go. Surprised they didn’t make him an upper-level manager, considering what an idiot he was.)
My last two jobs i got laid off … i temped where i’m now employed for a year, dyed my hair because i read an article about subconscious age discrimination, and six months later they hired me full time. gah. shallowness & stupidity abounds.
as people may guess, i’m forkin cranky tonight.
We got your snow. So pretty.
50/50 is better than it was before surgery ce — doubling down on the warm positive thoughts and prayers for a full and speedy recovery
He, not me. I held the dumb end of the syphon. 52 + test ounces + the 8 oz. beer batter thing.
hey starbuck — how’s your side of the coast range?
Thanks and yes, I worry about my HS frosh daughter and what schooling/career choices will be awaiting her, too.
Hoping for the best results, CE…! *fingers and toes crossed* *g*
Rained a lot.
hey ndfg — well fuck fuck and double fuck
Thanks Suzanne and Margot!
He can’t remove the bandage and crafted splint for 13 days.
hey margot — how ya doing tonight?
only picked up .33″ here… the valley had it much worse than the coast this time
CT thanks so much! Hoping for the best, and the wedding is 9-10-11!
Aloha, M’dear…! We might have another kindred soul sharing a birth day with us…! ;-)
Brewing up a cup of chamomile and lemon balm (dried from my garden last season) tea. These little things are keeping me sane as possible. I might need to put that crank on once in a while, myself. Sometimes I feel I’m too complacent.
Edit: I’ve got less and less hair up there to worry about what color it is.
a sequential day! easy to remember
I managed to make it to the library and grocery before we got more snow. Got a new Paretsky novel, “Body Work.”
*heh* those ounces can really add up…? ;-)
How much did it cost for the materials…?
*heh* That’ll be easy to remember, eh…? ;-)
Oh Suzanne we had such a lovely engagement party in New Jersey. I love her parents, and we even got all the aged grandparents there.
yay — tis peace of mind knowing ya can hunker down and ride it out — and not go batshit crazy in the mean time
Alright, one Latte coming up…! Here ya go, Suz…!
oooo foam art of the peace symbol.. thanks dood
Gotta go back and review comments but:
How High The Moon was (beyond Les Paul N Mary) the original bebop tune.
The bebopers would take a pop tune and use the same chord changes and then jam the shit out of it . . . without making a lot of reference to the original melody.
That way, newbie musicians and newbie listeners would think it’s new.
How High The Moon was the first and foremost tune to be used this way by the bebop hep cats.
Huge jazz dudes and dudette’s played and sang this song . . .
None ever did it any better n Paul N Mary Ford:
i like beer
De nada, M’dear…! ;-)
hey larue — how’s sac tonight?
i heard the news, congrats, grandpa! I’m babysitting tonight so The Daughter could go out and listen to live music with friends. You just lurv lurv lurv those grandkids when ya get them!
Grandson will be 7 next month, he’s edging to the age of EEEWWW, KISSSES! Tonight he pretended to be smearing pizza on my face with his allegedly pizza-covered mouth. So of course i had to hug him tight and rub my cheek clean on his hair while shrieking about ewww, pizza on my face! A good romp was had by all.
I’m an alternative Mom who prepared for the day the State discovered my children weren’t under the guidelines for the Education System. Not documented, ergo, no Fed money.
I kept them aware that at any point the Education System will find out they’re not registered, so they should be ready for tests. And it’s going to cost us $900 per child. So, maybe no vacation if that happens.
I have several pounds of hops in the deep freeze, but I’ve never tried brewing beer.
So do I.
…only picked up .33″ here…
I presume your new-fangled weather station is fully functional now…? ;-)
*heh* I still think the best part will be “here take ‘em”…! ;-)
yup… still figuring out the navigation of the base station, etc but its up and working :) tis a kick to watch the wind gauge spinning fast and thinking it must be really blowing outside, look at the gauge and learn that it is only 7.8mph…. lardy, i am looking forward to watching it during a 50mph blow…
My son just got interested in brewing. The hops is only 2 oz of a 5 gallon batch Maybe a bit more as a final bouguet.
. I’ve been dehydrating as a hobby lately. 2 oz of hop dried is worth growing a row.
are hops used for anything other than beer?
I’m already in the no vacation ever situation and really don’t have a clue how I am going to get her into a college. I am debt free with minor assets, but I cannot fathom getting any loans for schooling and get into that potential student loan/penalty/interest trap at my age. Education help, we can only DREAM, I guess.
42F all day, me and honey tahred, car’s breakin down.
N we’re still hangin in.
I guess we is ok . . . . no whinin allowed.
Graft the hops vine to cannabis root stock and smile a lot. ;)
Does she have to go to college? Why exactly?
hanging in and hanging on — i so hear that. how’s honey doing?
When and what did you get a new weather station?
You gotta be Happy!!!
i did not know that
Sure, jumping vids . . . what!?!@?!?!?
jen. christmas. oregon scientific
Are you going to put the data on line?
Very cool. I wish I could garden cannabis. I won’t because it’s still stupidly and profitably illegal in my community. And we rent. Not cool.
I’ve never tried it, just a rumor that I heard decades ago, but from Wikipedia:
The genus Cannabis was formerly placed in the Nettle (Urticaceae) or Mulberry (Moraceae) family, but is now considered along with hops (Humulus sp.) to belong to the Hemp family (Cannabaceae). Recent phylogenetic studies based on cpDNA restriction site analysis and gene sequencing strongly suggest that the Cannabaceae arose from within the Celtidaceae clade, and that the two families should be merged to form a single monophyletic group.[
hey tut — cheap trick on pbs’ austin city limits this week
I like Chet Baker’s version of How High The Moon
i had no idea they were in the same family. i really don’t know much about alcohol botanicals and never paid much attention since i’ve never really liked alcohol much.
I fucking hate white man speak.
*duh — lightbulb going on* hence the term ‘hopped up’
Now that Obama reformed the student loan racket, stripping the banksters of origination, student loans are made directly from the government. The costs are now much less and with a variety of ways to pay off the loans through service work…
I tried it in college, but never inhaled. I wouldn’t mind seeing it decriminalized and am waiting for the deficit hawks to be honest enough to admit huge dollars could be saved from the prison/court systems.
hey robert — how’s pennsylvania tonight?
tis a home station and not a ‘professional’ which is the kind that has the software interface for recording long term and posting online, like with weather underground or weather bug. only keeps track up to 24 hours at a time
…car’s breakin down…
Dayam, dood… That always bite’s the big wienie…! 8-(
Dang, it’s been awhile since we’ve crossed threads…! ;-)
Little Alabama is at 19 degrees right now and getting prepared for the new Rethug governor….
Hiya, pups. Just finished our last holiday season party – for friends who traveled away from Alaska for their holiday vacations and are now back. Great Latin American feast with lotsa homemade stuff. I made the margaritas.
Very beautiful weather this weekend. About plus 5 F right now with no wind. Went ice skating on the lake two days in a row. It actually got up to 26 F in my greenhouse this afternoon from the sunshine.
The reforms expand federal Pell Grants to a maximum of $5,500 in 2010 and tie increases in Pell Grant maximum values to annual increases in the Consumer Price Index plus 1%. It would also end the practice of federally subsidized private loans, using all federal student loan funding for direct loans
Ends the process of the federal government giving subsidies to private banks to give out federally insured loans. Instead loans will be administered directly by the Department of Education.
Increases the Pell Grant scholarship award.
For new borrowers of loans starting in 2014, those who qualify will be able to cap the amount they must spend on loan repayment each month to 10% of their discretionary income (current cap is 15%.)
Also, for new borrowers after 2014, loans will be eligible to be forgiven to those who make timely payments after 20 years (the current time-frame being 25 years).
Will make it easier for parents to take out federal PLUS loans for students.
Several billion will be used to fund historically poor and minority schools, as well as increasing community college funding.
Thanks Robert, she’s got great grades and is doing college level music already, there is a nearby college with a strong music program and that might get her in the door. Convincing her that she can could in the door by continuing to build on her talents is the trick at the moment.
hey et — that sounds beautiful. i loved the ice photos you posted over at your place…
happy lucky 100 robert!!!
Any pick up hockey games played yet on the lake…? ;-)
I want peach ice cream and an old fashioned root beer…
To sound an urgent alarm. We need it legalized NOW. In Wa. we have gangs from Mexico moving in and growing in a paramilitary style. It’s not about illegal immigration. It’s about a good crop that was grown through the ages that was demonized to create a police state. Get over it.
Legalize it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only radiation therapy left . . . n that’s left to be consulted Monday.
We’ll see . . .
Bless ya my fav sistah online.
one order peach ice cream and old fashioned rootbeer sliding down the counter to ya
I saw that. Thanks.
Here they are, pups.
These tough times for employment combined with the student loan reform make going to college a shrewd way of avoiding low wage frustration. By the time she completes college, the economy will be ready for her–even in the field of musical science….
With you there, 100%. Have some friends that live out that way, who used to live here.
Ummmmm, that root beer goes down so smooth….
I looked at my favorite stick and a puck before I went out yesterday, but decided Id get my skating technique back up before I go crashing around. Best midwinter ice in four or five years.
Uh oh, the suckers Lucky winners are getting picky in their selection of prizes, eh…? ;-)
That’s sort of what I’ve been telling my kids and their friends – stay in school until this economy gets better. I’m not very sure about when that might be, though.
We all have a good thought for Mrs. Larue.
Thick and dense, eh…? Any chance the Arctic Ice Cap might get a boost this winter…?
I really would have settled for a non-lite beer….
yes, but we sure know what it’s like now…
My thoughts and prayers to the missus…! *g*
There is very, very little sea ice in the Bering Sea right now, which is causing problems in coastal communities that usually don’t get nailed by freezing salt water in midwinter. This winter in Alaska is not setting cold records. Moisture records for November, but no cold records. Yet.
*heh* A real man, eh…? ;-)
Great pics ET. We usually get a big snow cover before the ice gets that thick. About five years ago a shallow inland lake froze glass clear, 3-4 inches thick and we were skating around looking at bass and northern pike through the ice. Way cool.
Yep, but with old balls…
On our lake, the trout skitter around in November and early December under the ice, but they slow down by now, until the lengthening days stir them again in early March and they get ready for the ice to go out of the creek so they can go there to spawn.
Thanks. I could probably have an exhibit of all the ice pictures I’ve taken over the years. Each year is different.
We truly need a good cold snap to take out the excess moisture in the atmosphere…! All that excess moisture doesn’t bode well…! What truly gives me the willies is all that permafrost melting and unleashing all that captured methane…! 8-(
I can almost see melting methane from my house in Wasilla. Seriously, a friend is studying the increasing outpourings. Does not bode well.
Nice, ET. I was going to post a comment but it’s either anon or the Google account and no way do I give out the PW for it. Why in earth does that matter? The blog “Down With Tyranny” has the same arrangement.
I nearly spit my root beer at this line in Dear Penis:
If we put our heads together,
We’d just stay home forever…
tis a funny song and the animation is dead on hysterical
Go with anon and type in at the bottom of the comment ‘Starbuck’…
Keep a diary and when the methane finally escapes, write a book or article and call it “The Day the Earth Farted”
Goes with the territory if you let google host your free blogspot.com place. You can post as anonymous and then put your fdl handle at the bottom as a signature.
I’m going to get a web site going with audio hosting so I can put my music back up on the web. As soon as I find the time….
The worst methane pocket escape events from formerly permafrost-dominated terrain are in northeastern Russia, not Alaska.
So who gets to see the PW? The owner of the blog?

Best layman-level short article on this – it includes a great graphic.
Spent a big part of my day sorting, rearranging and cleaning the laundry/storage room and I am fading fast. Have a big load of recycling ready for the twice a month drop-off in my town tomorrow later today, which I get to about every other month. Always nice to chat with you LLN’ers. Thanks Suz. Everyone be well.
No actually, a young friend, fish and wildlife employee, saw a man with the full face tattoos of an assassin in the drug cartel in downtown Olympia,Wa. This guy with a full face tattoo. Not the little tear drops from the eye that signify a kill.
Legalize it. No one cares if you smoke, have smoked or will smoke. These are scary people taking over a really good agricultural crop. For no reason other then to create a police state. And politics.
’bout time for me to head out folks. thank you for letting me hang out with ya tonight and i hope to see ya tomorrow night for a special toon
I think I’ll join you. I seem to be up on my high horse tonight.
Just fuckin’ shoot me !!
Pleasant dreams, M’dear…! *g*
CTuttle, I’m going to ask a really ignorant question.
On the top banner there’s a Notifications thing. What does that mean? Is it Twitter or Facebook or something?
I couldn’t agree more with this comment, or your earlier one. Some aspects of the War on Drugs make sense. Most don’t.
It’s the new fdl banner, not associated with anybody else…! Usually it’ll notify ya when somebody wants to ‘friend’ ya here, and only here…! Lurk might be able to elaborate some more if you ask him nicely…! ;-)
Most don’t indeed…! However, Ice needs to be nuked, period…! 8-(
Lurk, dear Lurk, as you may have noticed I’m working on my aggravating tendencies.
So, what is that Notifications thing and why does it seem like a Twitter thing,or is it?
Wow! That they have the feedback mechanism well characterized is equally impressive.
Also the remark ““So many amplifying methane feedbacks, so little time to stop them all” and figure on right).” Caught my eye, especially on the part about getting it right. I have serious doubts we can, except by sheer, dumb luck.
And I pray to Volcano Woman every night. For five more Pinatubos. /s
The sheer amount of methane captured is truly mind boggling and we really opened up pandora’s box with our global warming, and, what we’re doing in the Athabasca Tar Sands is only quickening the speed of our descent over the cliff…! 8-(
And I pray every nite that Madame Pele doesn’t have a hot flash…! ;-)
Let’s not forget Fracking. The hidden resource capture.
We may need to burn it. Methane would be a good fuel, and tapping the source may alleviate the pressure. At any rate, converting to CO2 looks to me to be a serious consideration.
The feedback mechanisms in the cyclic planetary heat exchanges have a negative sign, meaning they serve to regulate and stabilize. This appears to be a positive feedback mechanism.
CTuttle, Lurk is not going to come into play until I spot the C word. I’m thinking.
But it’s not feasible to ‘tap’ it… It emitted from every square inch of melting permafrost… throughout the arctic circle…! 8-(
Maybe if ya toss in some pecans too…! ;-)
Well, I shall bid ya’ll a fond adieu…! Aloha Oe…! *g*
I don’t think reducing our emissions to near zero is workable either. I also suspect that doing so would not make any difference now. Sort of like throwing a battleship into full reverse from cruising speed with only seconds to avert a crash.
Aloha Oe…until we meet again.
So many clunkers like that out on the road right now, eh?
It would be a huge engineering feat, but think of it. Solving both problems together.
Metaphorically speaking, of course!
We don’t DO pecans…we’re Nor’westerners.
Make a killer dark chocolate cake though. I could do a chopped roasted pecan dusting
to accent the glaze of dark chocolate frosting……………..
Lurk, what does Notifications mean.? If you’re an alien.
Here’s a piece on a project in Antarctica.
It sucks to be ignorant.
No matter ow much you know, how brilliant your mind, the degree of ignorance will always out do the degree of intelligence. Just go into the stack room of any great library and you will find a huge collection of things you don’t know you don’t know!
After 1 AM, so off to bed.
Maybe dream of how to capture all that earth fart!
Intelligence is highly over rated. Enough is good enough.
Since I’m probably the last comment… I’m sad to still not know the answer to a simple question. What the fuck does Notifications have to do with FDL?
I am heart broken that this evening is ending and I don’t have an answer. What the fuck is Notifications?
We’re not all tech savvy, and I bet you can’t raise and kill your own chickens. So there.
In case you missed it, you must all see the late great Mr. Moore in the original version of “Bedazzled,” one of the funniest movies ever, which Dudley co-wrote and stars in with Peter Cook.
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins, Blow and Herbert today. In “God Save the Debate” Ms. Collins says we answer to a higher committee. Mr. Blow, in “Religion and Representation,” says increasingly, the face of religion in America is fluid, fluctuant, questioning, nonconformist and in many cases unaffiliated. Mr. Herbert, in “Misery With Plenty of Company,” says policy makers are bending to the superrich while turning a blind eye to the nation’s poor.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got French toast made with challah, with warm maple syrup. And let me second what perrylogan said about “Bedazzled.” If you haven’t seen it, rent it or buy it or borrow it from a friend — it’s sublime. Have a great day.
Brilliant! And what’s left of Not Only But Also. I liked the bit in the Muppet show where he refers to Animal, “I didn’t realise he was president of your debating society.”
Here it is, about 11:30, I’m up at least 4 hours, have no notion about how to solve the methane problem, or if I even had a dream about it!
What I don’t know I don’t know, I guess.
