Pinkard and Bowden — I Lobster and Never Flounder.
What’s on your mind?
Smooches on you anyways Suz!
hey kelly — how was your day?
hey ce — how ya doing tonight?
Slow and low. About four inches of snow, light and lovely.
Put Belch’s sis on the train tonight.
I already miss her. She was helping a LOT with the Old Ones.
sounds so pretty ce — but then again, snow means brrrr to my wussy self :) is mrcejr’s surgery tomorrow?
how long was she there helping?
Bless her. I need help too.
Yes surgery. I hate and love it.
will be sending him warm positive healing thoughts and prayers for a full and speedy recovery. please let me know how he is doing, ce.
Mid August to Halloween – then first week December till now.
The fam gathering happened during Christmas week when all the miscreants were here.
But Sniff (Belch’s sister) is just a champ.
Goodnite all == powering down.
Bye! (thinking thoughts about happy thumbs and hands for CEjr.)
blue hair driving in my lane
tis a heavy burden ya’ll are dealing with kelly… tis good that she was able to help for that long
Love Sniff, but there’s a thing here; we’d do it without her.
I wouldn’t quite call it a burden though. And “chosen obligation” doesn’t seem right right either. Bit of a writer’s block in terms of descriptors.
how about a lot of responsibility?
What does one call it when:
You can’t imagine choosing a course of action, but it seems impossible that when faced with it, that you couldn’t do anything BUT it?
And “fate” is not the word either.
duty? doing the right thing? love…
A duty of love…?
hey rond — how’s the great swamp tonight?
It’s just a situation. Nothing can be done one way or another. Situation.
ron — i was listening to this today and immediately thought of you
hey loohoo — how’s socal tonight?
damp, cool, but better than most. One more day, and this miserable week will be over. You?
Duty was my word of choice. That ,or, ties that bind.
hey openhope — how’s the sound tonight?
Something like that.
But it’s you don’t HAVE to, yet somehow you are COMPELLED to.
Probably I’m splitting too many hairs here. But there really are differences.
Hi! It’s finally drying up here a bit. How’s almost-grandmasville???
Awww…that’s sweet. Thanks. I have our version of that up on our page, too. Strange-it’s one of the biggest hits, but most of the views I’m getting are for some of the more obscure and/or epic songs.
RonD, aren’t you enjoying work??
started warming up after 10pm last night and ended up warmer than the daytime temp was. today was a day of gray clouds… weather dood says there is snow in the forecast for sat nite/sunday but only down to the 1,000 ft level so i’ll probably be just above freezing.
Loo Hoo! I was just wondering about you-hadn’t seen you in a while!
jen’s 26 weeks along today… baby julianna is as long as an english cucumber and around 1 2/3rds lbs per this week’s size descriptor
Not working right now, at all, except on the house. Finished my second bachelor’s in Dec, as prep for grad school in august, and they’re laying off teachers here as fast as they can. I am truly dreading what I’m going to have to do if something doesn’t break loose soon.
I know. Now that I’m on the total freedom schedule, life is wonderful!
The Sound is good. But, the tigress in the sound is pacing in her cage. Was your stuff contagious??
Having a special ed credential used to be a sure-fire job. Is that still true?
Aloha, Suz and lln pups…! It was a gorgeous day here, so ya’ll can hate me straight away…! ;-)
*laughing* aloha tut — you are safe (at least from me) for tonight. how was your day?
Done deal! Ice on the pavement here in NorCali!
To split hairs; if you or your partner-in-life loves the person who needs care, it’s no longer a choice. It’s just what you do.
shit weather dood is saying that in addition to the snow on sat/sun, the really cold wet stuff is doing another round wed/thur next week and that one is gonna be even worse
hey newton — ice? holy moly dood — that’s a rarity. how was your day?
Um, better, but no. And Secondary Social Science people like myself appear to be a dime a dozen There are so many of us with long experience looking for jobs that recent grads have little hope.
Grumpy, cranky and the gang from a few nights ago.
I think they came to my house. :]
It’s Just What You Do.
ahhh fork, i’m sorry hon. tonight i’m back to usual so the good news is that it doesn’t last long.
This is the weather that scares me. Wet, frozen ground with wind. I’m hoping the wind is a non-item. Just a rumor.
fork. teaching, nursing, and public safety were always considered recession proof back in the good old days
Busy morn then mellowed out after that…! Schooling my daughter on the importance of prenatal vitamins and getting her scheduled to see an ob/gyn etal…! ;-)
Nice and cold.
i’ve not heard anything about wind mentioned so far. usually that gets predicted closer to the event instead of in the long term forecasts unless its blatantly obvious so there is room to hope for a non-wind storm.
when is she due tut? sure seems like a lotta folks are going to become grandparents lately
I know. I have literally been hearing the system screaming for teachers for my entire life. So, I walk away from a twenty year career to become a teacher, and….
But I’m not bitter.
those are not two words that i tend to associate with each other newton
i’m glad that i’m retired and my job is not under attack… but then again, my retirement is with that socialist ne’er do well, calpers, which is under attack.
they are out to gut everything and don’t give a rats ass about who is hurt as long as they can make a profit.
*heh* The clinic told her Aug. 26th… the day before my b-day, the missus swears it will be my b-day…! ;-)
Hush now…! ;-)
babies rarely arrive when scheduled…. jen’s due april 14th. both of my girls were 6 days early.
If I didn’t own my home, I would be in very deep trouble. Not debt-free by any means, but got it better than a lot of people.
I heard the storm was going hit from the N.W. But, who the hell knows? N.W. is a kickass storm, usually.
i know i’m lucky to have my pension — and even tho i’m hurting, i am nowhere as bad as a lotta folks.
its those south winds i hate… this place faces southwest and there is no protection on that side.
I’m sorry about that. I’m a Homeschool Mom so I think we need more alternative education, less institution.
Shit, no money in that,either.
Same here. It’s just my humble little hovel out on the edge of the swamp, but it’s a lot to be thankful for.
It’s a steady number to work with.
openhope.. here’s the latest from the weather blog i follow about the storm. his last paragraph is worrisome… one of us is gonna get hammered
yup — knowing i’m gonna have x for the month gives me a place to budget from — but i gotta admit i had a hella time adjusting from an every two week paycheck to less than half of that only once a month. had way too much month left over at the end of the money
I have conflicting opinions. Some of my students who have been homeschooled are pure blessings, while others appear to have been taught by the mother from Carrie. The thing is, I think the institution is doing as well as any institution could after being under sustained, concerted attack for thirty years. Homeschooling, imo, is great if pursued by parents truly concerned with the school environment-and really bad if used for non-stop religious indoctrination, which is, sadly, often the case, at least here.
Yeah, our income just dropped to 1/4 of what it was. Plus med. ins. plus a shitty new ins. program.
But, that said, we enjoy a rich life of food, art, music and companionship. My son is a beer brewing explorer these days, which does his old mum’s heart good. Being a cook and a rebel. He’s been teaching me the basics tonight as he bottled 53 bottles.
He understands kitchen hygiene. I’m so proud!!
i had ray-gun as gov in the late 60′s and early 70′s — he was going after schools back then.
Like anything else, I suppose. A good parent can make up for a substandard school, but a school cannot makeup for substandard parents. In the end, it’s the parents.
fuck. you certainly made the right decision to stock your larder and be as self sufficent as possible before things went sour.
and yahoo for good kitchen hygiene… and beer :)
I agree, there’s good homeschoolers and bad homeschoolers. We were liberal, with a great support base. And the ability to travel as a family. I’m so glad, forever, that my kids and I had that intense amount of time together when they were developing. Many times I panicked that I was going to cripple them. It made them stronger to grow from the roots.
There are not many joys in life like children to be proud of. Congratulations to you!
Yeah, kitchen hygiene rocks!! Nothing better than to eat a meal in good company that you KNOW won’t kill you or make you sick.
Civilization at it’s finest.
teach your children are still words to live by
opehope… when do ya get to taste the beer?
Hey, that snow made my phone and internet connection go out for a while. Good to be back online and “see” everyone.
yuck margot — that’s so frustrating! glad to ‘see’ you are back online. was that indicative of the rest of your day?
The cruise leaves tomorrow…without me.
that totally blows dood :( how was your day?
does this help perk ya up thatguy?
No, rest of the day was fine.
The first bit of snow was that weird little styrofoam ball snow. Grappel? something like that. Slick as anything.
I am not good company tonight. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
Goodnight, all. The best of all possible tomorrows to you all.
grappel is what i think they call it… not hail but not snow either
Thank you, Suzanne !! I laughed so hard. So apropos! As soon as my son gets off the phone with his soulmate I’m playing that for him.
Ah,..RonD, the Grumps and the Cranks and their gang are at your house. too?
glad ya liked it — its a kpig classic from when i was in boulder creek but ya gotta watch out that it doesn’t become an ear worm.
i think this has just been a forking crappy week and i will be happy when it is over. too much bad mojo in the air or something
FUCK.. i did it again.. hell and shitfire, i shudda noticed the numbers
Absolutely. Shitty, dirty, crappy fucked up week. And then my son announces he’s going to go for a job on the fishing boats. Fuck. It’s like having your kid decide to be a hard-rock miner. I was so hoping he’d go into his gift of motorcycle/engine. In a warm garage. On land.
He’ll get on a boat, he’s got connections, respect and “It”. The thing that it takes to be a fisherman.
fuck. fishing boat is such fucking dangerous work.
Oh man. Hugs openhope.
Suzanne. I’m of the new mind that we need to embrace these 100′s, figure out the numbers and buy a lottery ticket.
I just don’t understand the numerology.
What the hell.
who was it.. starbuck? that does numerology?
helen thomas returns to journalism!
Hi Suzanne. That’s very good news. How are you doing?
hey wigwam — it is and her first column is going to be on social security privatization :) i’m doing ok — how was your day?
I needz simpl. Oh, and last comment.
laughing — you certainly have had a monopoly on last comments. i think you have had more than anyone else. when i get up i come to the previous night’s lln thread and read any comments that may have come in since i said g’nite.
This has been the week from hell. I still have a job, but our company has gone all Rethuglican on us. Eleven people laid off … in a company of around 150-175, that’s a bunch. And 9 of the 11 are good, knowledgeable, hardworking people. The common denominator? They’d all been with the company for a long time thus their wages were higher. And all of them were not afraid to stand up to a certain idiot upper level manager. Fuck.
Helen Thomas, rock on.
My day was great, as was my holiday season. My brother moved to this area a few months ago, so there were lots of parties on both sides of our family. Real good parties.
I’m looking forward Jane’s comments Obama’s choice of Daley to replace Emanuel. I expect them to be quite interesting. I can’t imagine a more disappointing choice.
hey ndfg — fuck. how are you doing?
yay! so good to have family close.
According to my Astrology it’s because I’m talkative. I think.
Mason is a very special man. FDL is lucky to have his voice. I thought he was just the go to man for legal discussions at Marcy’s place. But, no. Now he’s bringing more ideas into my life to think about. It’s been an interesting day of thinking about things.
Dehydrating organic apples from Costco helped.
’bout time for me to head out folks. thank you for letting me spend some time with ya tonight.
i’m stressed. i said, fuck this nonsense, and left a little early tonight. Since i’m gonna work 8-10 hrs overtime on saturday night.
At least the people let go were given severance packages, but still. One was my ex – my kids are stressed and sad for their dad, my mom is upset, she adores her ex-SIL, heck, i’m upset. Of the 8 engineers/estimators employed by our company, he was not on the top six list of engineers the artists would have liked to see booted.
Yeah, fuck. Fucking fuck.
fuck… i’m so sorry hon (((ndfg)))
I hate to hear that. I lived through a similar situation at a hospital, where they fired all the long-time nurses who were unit directors, and some other nurses too.
A friend of mine is going through that in Arizona.Labor and delivery nurse. She just LOVED Sheriff Joe and his abusive crap. Now there’s no more of those immigrant babies needing birthing, they’re cutting staff and HIPPA enforcing bullshit to send seniority nurses up for review.
sigh … it’s brutal out there. It always seems just an extra bit worse when it hits so close to home. I don’t think i’m in too much danger … i’m not paid all that great, and i probably have the lowest or close to lowest error rate in the department. But i don’t have a high opinion of Idiot Manager so i’m gonna have to watch my mouth for a while. At least Idiot Manager is head of another area that has no direct bearing on my chain of command.
As the unseen hand flips us the finger.
What happened? The future once looked so bright and rosey. The technology has in fact arrived; my next toaster will be Internet-ready. What happened?
Remember the distopia sci-fi, where automation and technology reached the point where there were only the owners and the lumpen proletariat, and the middle class had disappeared (e.g., Blade Runner)? That day has arrived. These jobs are not coming back. Either we fight or we perish. There is no middle ground.
that’s a succinct summation.
i agree …
Take something like Kurt Vonnegut’s Player Piano. He left out an intermediate step where our wages dropped to those of the Chinese workers as the unseen hand leveled the wage-price playing field. But, our period on Chinese wages is only temporary. Even the Chinese cannot work as cheaply as can machines.
Either we replace capitalism or it will replace us.
I was in a coffee shop last evening and heard a woman at the next table talking about how she and people she knew were being cheated out of their pensions by their employers. I had just read an editorial by George Will (I think) saying that the Federal Government should not bail out the states. It should force them to declare bankruptcy and thus void their union contracts thereby getting out from under their pension obligations, which are not federally guaranteed. Sweet! Just, fucking Sweet!
Unfortunately, I got it from the youngbloods. They are freaking. 8 in 10 don’t have jobs.
Rant off. I apologize.
Speaking of the young, this by Jamie Galbraith is one of the sanest things I’ve read recently. His point is that rather than raising the retirement age, as Obama and his Republican buddies want to do, the retirement age should be lowered. The number of jobs is diminishing, for reasons I mentioned above (offshoring and automation), and the few jobs left should go to the young. Their elders should be allowed to retire earlier, not required to hang onto their jobs longer.
It is Galbraith’s claim (and I tend to agree) that modern productivity has increased to the point where relatively few people can produce what is needed to support all of us, which was exactly the point made in those distopia sci fi novels. But there I go again. Oops!
