DADT, DREAM Act Votes Today

By: Jane Hamsher Saturday December 18, 2010 7:56 am

As of Thursday, it was unlikely that either the DREAM Act or DADT was going to come up for a vote in the Senate in this session. Talking Points Memo was reporting that the White House was “stalling the DADT vote” by insisting that the START nuclear reduction treaty have priority, which meant that there would not be enough time to bring it up this session.

Dear Senators Hagan, McCaskill, Pryor, Conrad, and Baucus: Our DREAM Is in Your Hands

By: dreamermatias Saturday December 18, 2010 7:40 am

What if a US Senator could share a meal with a young person who has grown up American, excelled in school, given back to their community, and only needs the DREAM Act to pass so that they can fix their immigration status?

Pull Up a Chair

But mostly, I worry about those people who will suddenly find themselves without any financial resources in the middle of this winter… how will they feed their children and pets? What will they do for shelter? Do they have family or friends who will take them in? And how miserable is it for children not to be able to celebrate with a few presents… whatever holiday it is that they celebrate?

Late Night: Years Later, Judith Miller Is Still Doing Scooter Libby’s Laundry

By: Swopa Friday December 17, 2010 8:00 pm

A couple of days ago, I managed to stumble across Judith Miller’s review of Fair Game, the movie based on the Plame leak scandal (via Valerie Plame Wilson and Joseph Wilson’s books on the subject).

Given the source — and especially that she wrote the review for the Wall Street Journal editorial page — I figured the review would be a masterpiece of unintentional comedy, and I wasn’t disappointed.

The Lucky Bystanders

By: Eli Friday December 17, 2010 6:01 pm

Steven Pearlstein just can’t understand why Republicans are so obsessed with cutting taxes for rich people. It’s “one of the great enduring mysteries of American politics.”

In Tax-Cut Capitulation, House Democrats Again Redefine Pathetic

By: Jon Walker Friday December 17, 2010 5:20 pm

The House Democratic caucus is truly pathetic. They are, in fact, so pathetic that I’ve been forced to use a thesaurus to find new ways of describing their pathetic behavior: weak, impotent, pitiful, feeble and toothless. Last night, they again folded completely and passed the Senate’s version of the Obama-McConnell tax deal–as is–even though only a week earlier the House Democratic caucus voted to reject the deal.

Why Fanboys/girls Want Net Neutrality

By: Lowell Peterson Friday December 17, 2010 4:40 pm

The WGAE represents content creators – people who write programs for the internet and other digital distribution systems (e.g., to mobile devices). We have argued in favor of Net Neutrality because our members want the opportunity to reach audiences directly, without major studios and other large corporations deciding what to distribute. But what about the audience? The public? Why should they care about Net Neutrality? Because there is an important aspect to the Net Neutrality debate that people should keep in mind: “paid prioritization”.

Jon Stewart Leads Lonely Charge on 9-11 Health Care Bill

By: David Dayen Friday December 17, 2010 4:00 pm

It’s fallen to The Daily Show’s JON STEWART, of all people, to make an issue of the failure to pass the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which would provide needed funds to victims of the environmental and health hazards at Ground Zero.. He basically turned his show over to it last night.
