The Muppets — Auld Lang Swine/For She’s A Jolly Good Porker, from episode 502 of The Muppet Show.
Hippo Gnu Year everyone! What’s on your mind?
Best wishes for 2011, Suzanne. Let’s give the idea of hope another chance!
Hi Suz, happy 2011, it will be great for you!
hippo gnu deer dearie — how ya doing tonight?
hippo gnu deer bg — how was your day?
I feel exhausted, no good reason for that. 2010 wore me out, I guess.
Happy New year pups.
Smooch Suze.
i say good riddance to 2010 — whatta sucky year it was
hippo gnu deer busted *smooches back* is ng recovering well?
Weee! 54 minutes till the New Thang here – party!
hippo gnu deer kelly — how’s denver tonight?
You have much to look forward to in the grandmommying arena in the coming year, Suz. Sometimes it is good to simply ignore the messes that our politicians create for all of us and just enjoy the joy of family. Yeah.
And friends, too. And community. And firepups! On to 2011 with enthusiasm!
i’m planning on ignoring the fuckers in politics as much as i can… and i am looking forward to april and meeting baby julianna — a very good thing
Just droppin in to wish my best LLN Pal Suz and hers a Merry New Year N Happy Missletof!
You Pups, all, one and all . . .

We hope on!
*G*
hippo gnu deer larue — how was your day?
There is Nothing like a New Baby. I mean that, sincerely. It is the renewal of everything, all the promise of tomorrow, and beautiful skin.
Happy New Year!
Here’s a n interesting site on which to ruminate:
http://triggerpit.com/2010/11/22/incredible-pics-nasa-astronaut-wheelock/
bestest smell ever is new baby smell — even better than freshly baked bread
hippo gnu deer starbuck — wow, gorgeous eye candy — how was your day?
It’s COLD here – gonna be -5 or -6 tonight!
But I’m running HAWT! :)~
Yes, forgot that. Soooo exciting, Suz.
very well. Continued going over the crop of photos from all this year. I especially found some good stuff from a trip to Steens in October, a harbinger to the cold snowy winter under way there. 70″ of snow up in those hills, and -16 in Burns last night.
I alos noted a passing of an age:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40853048/ns/business-the_new_york_times/
Kodachrome is now completely gone (Sniff!)
I cut my photo eye teeth on K10.
brrrr makes my 35.8 seem warm in comparison (but i’m still forking freezing)
May a baked ziti dish zoom yer tummy and keep ya filled for daze.
*G*
I have lots of slides of my work, it sorta gives me a horror to think that the film era is dead.
Hey LLN Sistah . . . good day, one more with honey.
I can’t ask for more.
;-)
There’s still Fujichrome.
indeed… give her my regards dood
Digital is the only way that it is seen any more. My film camera is dead. I finally bought a digital, but I know it is not really very good, only for snapshots. Still need a professional for the documentation.
Nikon D90.
Hey Larue, I want to ask you some questions about demi glace.
Love your threads about professional cooking!
Ok, I can speak of this now.
Back in Nov. honey was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Since then, n 4 MRI’s, 3 biopsy’s n 1 ultrasound and a surgery, she’s ok.
Likely minimal radiation therapy for a few weeks . . . no chemo, some pills for a few years.
We got lucky, she got lucky, I got lucky.
I’ll take it. Gift.
Dawg Bless My Honey . . . . n here’s to any others who need our blessings.
We all fight on . . . we always have, we always will.
Bless all of you and yers . . hug them close, like it never ends, ups.
Namaste.
straight no chaser
Hey y’all, Happy New Year. No gig so I stayed home. Just as well.
Suze! Pups! Hippo gnu deer 2 ewe!
i’m worn out from babysitting tonight. We put together a starwars lego set, then played an intense game of Transformers Monopoly, and read aloud 3 chapters in the Narnia series. whew.
(((larue and honey)))
yay for getting lucky dood
hippo gnu deer that guy — how ya doing tonight?
hippo gnu deer ndfg — sounds like a fun time!!! exhausting but fun
Good news, Larue. Thank the stars and the universe, whatever it takes. So glad for you.
I’m fine, got happy kittens, happy oldsters and just a damn nice evening.
yay!!! a fine way to start the new year dood
Hey, Happy New Year, everyone.
Wow, Larue. Wonderful news for 2011.
Glad to hear things are good now.
hippo gnu deer cujo — how’s seattle tonight? you gonna watch the fireworks on NWCN? tis my plan…
Looks like a beauty. Over my head for now, but I will keep a mental note of it, thanks.
{{{ mrs larue }}} i’m so glad to hear that the outcome was positive. Cherish that woman! Hugs to you both.
It’s been my front line camera for about 2 years now. I may be moving on to a D7000, but I need some $$$ first. But I also need to upgrade my monitor, and that’s about $2200!
Here’s some music to celebrate the season and for Mrs. Larue:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4nLZ12q2Fo&feature=player_embedded#!
I don’t get cable, so unless they’re on free TV I don’t think I’ll be seeing fireworks.
It’s freezing cold here tonight. To make things perfect, there’s a burn ban in effect.
oh dear…. nwcn is cable — and other than msnbc, tis the only news cable station that i watch. i love watching the seattle show each new years eve
tis freezing cold here too but no burn ban — and even if there was, since wood heat is my only source of heat, i would be exempt
I’m a little worried about pipes freezing in my world tonight, I am so hoping not.
I been WAITING for that news, you bastard!
Good to hear!
Smoochey smooch
my landlord has assured me that i do not have to worry about freezing pipes unless it gets down in the teens… how cold is it?
For what it’s worth, Happy new Year!
Supposed to go to zero or thereabouts tonight. Nothing I can do now.
Tillamook is 29F
Happy New Year, Margaret. I hope it is better for all of us.
hippo gnu deer margaret — so good to see you at lln :) how was your day?
Be sure to run water in a slow drip from all your faucets. But I expect you know that.
brrrrrrr that’s forking c-c-c-old
the bay has mitigated the cold to 35.8 here.. thank goodness
Bless y ma’am . . . thanks for all yer good thoughts . . . they were and are solid for us. Lucky is as lucky can get, n we’re lucky for your thoughts.
*bows*
Tiz the tenants who will not do it.
until she gets a clean bill of health from the doc she’s still in my prayers and i’m still sending her positive healing thoughts dood..
I’m here, how can I help ya . . . it’s a delight to serve . . .
YOU have been a bastion of light with many of yer comments, and I thank yo ufor that.
*bows*
Let’s cook! *G*
fuck
Ummm….well pretty good. My friend is home from Japan and he wound up not in Austin as per usual but in SA just across the valley from me so I got to go see him and some other really good people. Cut out before the bars closed though so I’d make it home safely. Still saw at least one plastercated driver but kept my distance. How was yours?
Let’s think positive, I am trying.
Happy New Year Suz and all you pups! Been lurkin’ tonight, a little bit buzzed on some very nice Champagne, and headed to bed soon.
Special ((( hugs ))) to Larue and his honey, so glad that things will be okay :-)
Happens with the help of you and those like ya, thanks all along the way Suz . . .
Bless ya.
yay — seeing distant friends is good and having them be close is even better. mine was quiet with nary a phone call nor a visitor :)
ok… i’m thinking non freezing thoughts for your pipes bg
counting down now.
hippo gnu deer ll — sounds like you had fun — who could not with champagne :) i take it you are off duty tonight?
Thank you, Suz! Imagine the water staying inside them!
dry on the outside and only wet on the inside of the pipes — which will not freeze
Exactly! Perfect, and Happy New Year!
Wow! (blushing!) Thank you, Larue. I resonate with your delight in the slow bubbling of a well made stock.
The puzzle to me is where to get veal! I mean real veal, not baby beef. The butchers under age 50 hereabouts don’t know the difference.
I have a veal dish, a Veal Picatta for which I am tired of substituting chicken breasts, and have yet to make a demi glace! Supposedly Sauce Espagnole uses a brown stock derived from demi-glace, at least according to Larousse Gastronomique!
Hmmm, Larue, Larousse. Good cooking.
It’s not that bad here. It just feels cold because it’s humid. Do you have some sort of cover over your outside faucets?
It’s NEW YEARS HERE!
*weee! Champagne corks – (glug glug glug)*
Yes, my squad got lucky this year and we have this weekend off…back to work on Monday. I can’t believe how fast 2010 flew by, and I for one am really looking forward to a much better 2011 — on a deeply personal note, 2010 was a crap year for me…it’s gotta get better, no?
Thanks . . . we all got our travails, I sure was worried about this one.
26 years with a love . . . to think of losing her . . . others have worse problems.
But for me, for us . . . ah well . . . we might be safe.
What can i say . . . I can only be what any spouse would be . . . wracked my brain.
LeSigh.
Best to you and yers.
Ditto Suzanne! Fuckity Fuck, fuck, fuck!
Wonderful news Larue! So glad to hear it! :)
*virtually clinking flutes with Kelly*
My half-bottle of Montaudon is gone!
Hey, tomorrow is the Rose Bowl Parade. About 20 minutes into it is a float that honors people who have given the gift of life, ORGAN donors. My brother was an organ donor in 1976, and my college roommate received a heart from Ben Kopp, a soldier who died in Afghanistan. His photo is on the float, his heart still beats. If you get a chance, have a look, and give the gift of life on your driver’s license.
YOU!
(Hugs unmercifully!)
Happy New Years my mt time zone friends
it has got to be fucking better ll — i’m not sure we could handle another fucking year like this past one….
Bless ya SB, thanks.
So many FDL Pups I appreciate reading and you you are one of them.
We hope on, I hope . . . thanks. *G*
Thank goodness it’s a new year!
Thanks Suz and everyone else for being such good company.
Very nice thought bg; I’ve been listed as a donor on my license ever since Virginia gave us the option.
Thanks TG . . . yer another I appreciate reading every day . . . here’s to you and yers.
i will watch for it bg — i have designated donor status on my driver’s license — told my girls to donate what can be used and play the gift of life forward…
ooooh yay, a fuck thread! Fuck yeah it’s gonna be better ;-)
:: watch out Suz, 100 is looming ::
It is so easy to do, so many are waiting for a chance, and this should be a good consciousness raiser for it. My room mate is working hard on the issue now too, of course.
hippo gnu deer margot — how’s ohio tonight?
Heh – you beat me to it. She HATES that!
Well, that’s great news.
26 years is as long as I have been with my SO, Larue. When I read stories like yours, I breathe a sigh of relief, and a bit of dread also creeps in.
Sigh.
happy fucking lucky 100th comment kelly!!!
Congrats on the first 100 of the year 2011, Kelly!
Congrats. Nerve-racking but mostly behind you.
Happy New Year, Suz and all!
;-)
That’s what I meant to say!
hippo gnu deer newton — how’s the west bay tonight?
Ah dang it, you . . . a dear fav from Betsy’s Place . . . thanks lady, bless ya and here’s to yer eyes and THEIR best outcomes.
*sniff*
You hold up hard up there, it’s cold!!!
*G*
With love, both of us.
Same to all Pups.
In WA you can designate if you want to be a donor on your driver’s license. I figure why not, when I’m dead I’m not using them anymore.
Happy 2011 newton!
Fucking AAAAYYY!
Well, Suz made it past 100.
Can’t win ‘em all. Congrats, Kelly!
judas fucking priest — burns in eastern oregon is minus 15 at the moment according to the weather dood… they hit minus 25 for a low last night
Cold, wet, wintry.
And lots of loud music.
Lovely, n bless you and yers . . . *bows*
I am fucking tired, so saying goodnight to all, best to everyone this year. Suz, thanks for being such a fucking fine hostess all fucking year!

Weird about Burns. Frenchglen is +2F. I don’t know any other place in OR that is as cold as Burns
Oh yeah, looks like it’ll be in prime time tomorrow night because of the weather? Should be a blast…go Caps, rock the Red!
Well, let’s just say I’d rather bg had our current temperatures..weirdly warm. Then it will plunge into the 20s again which is just freaky.
hippo gnu deer tut — how’s paradise tonight (and if you say 70 or warmer i’m gonna fucking swear — lots)
g’night bg and Happy New Year :-)
Happy New Year CT!
Take care, thanks for good thoughts, Margot. Nighters. Happy happy.
Nite bg, I’ll be looking for that float tomorrow.
Smooch sweetie! Happy New Year. :)
Thanks, ll. Same to you, best of the morrow and all the year.
Wow! Sorry. I missed a lot. I was reading about the invention of optical telescopes.
be right back — gotta put some more brandy in my coffee. i’m outta fucking pot :(
My other favorite place, Joseph OR, where I came close to moving to, is at -6.
http://www.josephoregonweather.com/
*heh* My weather doo-hickey says 70 even…! Am I safe…? ;-)
Fuck, I didn’t have you on the email?
I am SO sorry . . . I’ll see if I have the original and send it to ya.
Fuck. I am SO sorry.
N now that we’re out in the open about my honey’s issue, I gotta say that Kelly is like a lot of Pups and I love him dearly for his kind eyes . . . .
I can’t BELIEVE I left you out of the latest info . . . I’ll go look for it now . . .
N Kelly, you are one of the best humans I ever met on the nets . . . yer heart to take care of others is big, bold, and grand.
N frankly, I guess so are most FDL Pups . . . what a town, what great people, all of yas.
*sniff*
Yikes! Currently 30F about 40 miles west of DC, where I am…enjoying some relatively balmy weather for this time of year.
Did you know that people were making crude lenses out of rock crystals before recorded history and that it was Ptolemy who first described reflection, refraction and color?
grrrrr
I now pronounce the Gay Irish Atheist Blessing Upon All Ye Readers of This Here Blog:
May the Year in front of you be filled with:
-Your Wisdom
-Your Solace
-Your Candid View Of The World
-A great buzz with your buds
-A sharp tongue when you need to hear those stern words
-Soft ears when those sharp words are a-coming
-A loud voice when you speak the truth
-A soft heart when you hear it
-A hearty laugh as you absorb all the above
SLAINTE!
edit: And I forgot – may you look FABULOUS during all of that! WEEEEE! *clink!*
i did not know that.. i always thought galileo was the first
slainte
I just checked, and it looks like NWCN has a live stream feed. For some reason, they don’t show commercials, but at least right now I see what you see.
The Greeks also had the concept of the atom. Also the man in the machine idea (clinamen)
Nope. Turns out that the first telescopes were in the mid 15th century in Europe no less and the first practical optical telescope was made in 1608 in the Netherlands. Gallileo greatly improved the instrument.
Thought so…! Besides that, M’dear, how’s the weather…? Oh wait… never mind…! ;-)
Slainte!
yay — cisco the gardener will be done any minute and telecast starts at 1130
Hate to admit it, but I had to look that one up. Anyway, health back atcha, dude.
Yeah, but we’re close . . . damn yer a friend we love . . . thanks so much.
Hugs to ya from us both . . . we’re kinda visiting it all tonite . . . n hoping.
I made bigass dish of baked rigatoni for her . . . full of bad shit, n some really wet n cheesy garlic bread. Salami, sausage, veggies, meat sauce and white cheese sauce and pesto green sauce layered on rigatoni . . . mozzerella cheese in between to bind, n asagio cheese to flavor . . . there was ricotta and more in the white sauce . . .
It will be the last we see of that shit for a year . . erpppppppp.
Had to give half it away to the neighbors . . . just to save ourselves.
LOL
*G*
Blended veggies n water from here on out . . . lol
If I still went out on New Year’s Eve, this would be the perfect musical accompaniment:
Settin’ The Woods On Fire
I’m watching sports (from the Seattle station). Apparently, I’m not seeing what you are…
UPDATE: Apparently, the local women are kicking ass in curling.
Apparently Gallileo heard about the telescope in 1609 and how it was put together and he designed a much better one. That’s what got him a patron for life.
don’t make me grrr you twice on a holiday dood
Slainte!
I just did too!
Health as well to all. May your days be smooth sailing and may the wind at your back not be your own.
what? none for me? betcha the fucking tubes got clogged with all that cheese
Happy New Year, everyone!
Thirty more minutes to donate to the FDL Writers Foundation for you left-coasters with tax write-off needs! The rest of you richie-riches can donate tomorrow as I’m sure you’ll start your 2011 tax planning early.
Best wishes to every single one of you. Thanks for all the wonderful laughs, Suzanne.
Happy, happy. Off to bed, now.
*heh* That reminds me a lot of the old Chinese ‘blessing’… “May you live in interesting times…” ;-)
Slainte…! *g*
Who’s CTuttle?
i think maybe they do a simulcast from king5??? still weather dood on the air here but they should get to it pdq
Heh. Wind.
Peg, isn’t that fucking hilarious giving me old blog name?
Uh, demi glace is from veal bones . . .
Sauce Espagnole is from beef bones.
One can reduce any bone stock to get a geltin like base
Is there a question I can answer for you?
hippo gnu deer teddy — smooches to you and patrick and g’nite
Not gonna stay up for the PDX New Year welcome?
Stay up, you old queen!
Heh. You’re a lot nicer than me.
Suz, I was hoping to make it to your left coast New Years celebration but I’ve hit the wall…so I wish you the best ever new year, in advance, and g’night and peace to all!
cujo, they just said they are awaiting the live signal from king5…. starting now they said
Thanks for trying. Goodnight, LL.

*G*
I imagine it’s on by now. The show just started here.
They’re doing a report on the installation of the fireworks they will be using tonight from the Space Needle. I don’t think I could do that. I’m deathly afraid of heights. I’m nervous inside the Space Needle.
Aloha, LL…! I wish ya the best of luck in the New Year…! *g*

All the best, Larue.
Fuckinggg BBBBBBBBBBBB!!!
*G*
Ewe got any other letters in the NY Alphabet?
*smilessmugly*
hehehehe
from teddy’s facebook status:
I pulled down a copy of Larousse, and I got it wrong. He does refer to “demi-glace or light brown stock” in the instructions about Sauce Espagnole, and when I looked up his prep of brown stock, he uses veal bones as well as beef. So that’s where I got it veal reference.
Haven’t looked at it for maybe 15 years!
Anyway, no veal to be had around here.
Thanks anyway.
And today is 1-1-11…
Dayam, I’ve got several shots of tequila in me to insure I’ll make the pumpkin hour and the better half, with an empty nest, tonite, is snoring away on the bed…! *sheesh*
I don’t give a rats ass phook how fabulous I look but I WILL hoss, tell ya this.
SLAINTHE MTHAH!
Ya pagan . . . dawg bless ya . . .
LMAO! Yep. Just another synonym for it.

Heh, yah, clogged tubes!

Yo-ho-ho, got a bottle of rum…Out of Coke…
Damn, another hero I forgot to acknowledge . .

GodDAMN there’s some fuckin heroes in this town.
*G*

can we get another round,
of bandages for these clowns,
there seems to be a swarm of bees in this town
I know it takes so long,
but if we hold on,
It’ll be alllllll gone…
thanks dood
If you do the numerology it’s 1-1-2011 which sums up to a 6. 1-1-11 is a 4.
It’s common to drop the whole year and only use the last two integers. It doesn’t really matter to me for the most part but when they come prophetic based on that it’s dead wrong.
Been doing numerology for a number of years now. Correlations do not appear to arise from such figuring, which is why I said it really doesn’t matter!
WAKE HER UP!
With a gentle kiss here n there, a whisper in her ear.
A hint of scent from a candle or flowers.
N then duck! N run!
*G*
Happy New Year CT, thanks for all you do . . . . n bless you and yers.
;-)
Happy New Year!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR to each and every one of ya — thank you for spending your new years here tonight. it means a lot to me
Okay. What does 6 mean? And the 4 in numerology?
I hope the luck runs to the missus recouping her wallet-book, that seems to have been snagged today at our local grocer… The $70 in it is no big deal, but, all our ss cards, etc… went with it…! *gah*
Hence, the tequila…
Happy New Year to those in this time zone!
oh yuck dood.. that blows
The upper limit of a refracting telescope is not much more than 40″ because the lens has to be held by it’s edges and gravity will make the center sag. I’m thinking that this should be re-visited with new materials. An objective lens at that size could also be manipulated by alternately squeezing and relaxing the edges of it, making a much simpler version of adaptive optics.
Sounds like a battlefield outside!
happy new year spurious! how ya doing tonight?
actually to everybody else too. love ya all
I think we’re ok . . .
Now, our thoughts are to you.
Take the help you been offered . . . n again, who was that hottie in black in them pics ya posted? That’s a lovely woman . . . . IMHO.
*G*
Here’s to a better ’11 for ya Margaret . . . . ya deserve it, dammit.
falling asleep, as usual, but looking hopefully at the new year
Achromatic lens technology should be much improved too. I’ll bet it wouldn’t be a problem to focus green into the same length as red and blue now either these days. It sure would save a lot of weight over a reflector.
Want to make a mint. Buy up a bunch of RFID chips and sew them into wallets so they can be tracked when missing or stolen.
That was cbl and the big guy on the other side of me was her hubby oldnslow.
And thanks. :)
some sorta plastics maybe?
*heh* Keck’s twin domes and Gemini’s adaptive lens have put Hubble’s pics to shame…!
amen.
To you too, spur, and to you all.
*smooch*
Use some nutmeg and cinnamon . . . ;-)
*G*
Heck with today’s materials and adaptive optics I’ll bet you could build a practical aerial telescope with a longer focal length to correct for chromatic aberration. It would be possible to get all of the colors at the same point really much easier than it was back when. No guessing. Objectives of a few meter should be possible.
crawling off–nite all, and happy 2011!
Just think that a thirty-meter diameter scope is in the works too…! ;-)
Yep, gunshots n some fireworks here . . . Happy New Year dear friend.
We do it again, eh?
*G*
g’nite spur
Gemini is at the fore front, Peg…! ;-)
twas quiet as a church mouse here — except for me blaring the music from the seattle fireworks show on the teevee machine…
As a coating only but yep. With an objective of a few meters and no tube, think of the advantages in savings. Mount the lenses on ball pivots on a rail and mount the rail on a shaft also on a ball pivot and control the whole thing with adaptive optics. Place a video camera at the focal and watch on your computer screen. You could build a very good telescope for a third the cost.
Dang, sorry to heat that . . .
That shit goes down in the isles? ]
I pity the phools who get caught for doing it.
*bows*
Someone just told me about new (to me) bifocal lenses. They’re made to have oil in between lenses and when you need magnification, you flip a little lever on the side of the glasses and zoom in.
The 6 is the number of Service. It is also a creative number.
The 4 is the number of Work.
In numerology, we have just entered the 6 Universal year.
1=Pioneer, the most personal number
2=Diplomat, Co-operation
3=Expressiveness, creativity
4=Work
5=Change
6=Service
7=The Hermit
8=Large Endeavors
9=Brotherhood. Universality
3,6,9 are creative numbers.
This is highly simplified.
But after all is said and done, the numbers don’t add up to well for me. OTOH, the Old Testament has the book of Numbers.
I don’t get the reference.
shit my nose is numb… i’m such a cheap drunk… two cups of coffee with a splash of brandy and my forking nose is numb
The best optics are corrected to Red, Green and Blue, known as apochromats. I don’t know if this extends to telescopes, but the best camera optics are apochromats. They are not too common, as they are expensive.
Service Work. That sounds rather positive to me.
2011 will be the year of doing service work. That may bring back what this country stood for before Reagan.
yowza. i come back from doing a few dishes and the thread is about 200 comments further along. Dang, didn’t realize i was so slow these days …
the temp is dropping rapidly here, causing the snow/ice on the roof to make a loud “CRACK!” every once in a while. I jump each time.
The meta materials holds the objective len’s shape, a sphincter (okay giggle) arrangement changes the shape of the lens to adapt the optics to cancel atmospheric turbulence. The computer keeps the focus perfectly on the plane that the video camera receives data. No temperature differential to fog the lenses, no inert gas needed, easy access to both sides of all lenses.
holy moly i would jump too…
In essence they utilize the full spectrum in observing…
Yes. The problem in telescopes is that when big refractors were in vogue, the focal lengths had to be enormous to correct for this and get the red, blue and green to focus in the same plane. Achromatic lenses will get red and blue into the same length but not green. This can be solved though now I think. As can the problem of focus that plagued aerial telescopes. I think what was an impractical idea centuries ago can be done pretty easily today and only hasn’t been because the idea was abandoned early on.
Don’t see a thing about it, googling…I think he misunderstood somthing pretty wildly…
i thought of plastic because jen wore glasses with plastic lenses as a child — her vision is sucky and glass lenses wudda been like coke bottle bottoms and too heavy on her wee little nose
last night at work, when i ran out to grab some food at my 8:30 lunch break, it was 44 and raining. Now it’s 3, with a windchill of -17. gah.
I’m talking to Gregory L on the phone. He says “Hi!”
The birthday of the Union, 7-4-1776 is a 5. We are the number of change, which is an auspicious number for things like immigration. It is also the number of selling, and of sex.
Oh cool. I didn’t know that. I was talking exclusively in visible light though and fixing the problems with big refractors.
N yer the other hottie!
*G*
Wishin ya well . . . we all need a break this year . . .
You do what ya gotta, but damn, Margaret, take some help from Pups as has been offered.
If I and mine could help, we’d toss money yer way.
If I had a job lead I’d toss that yer way, too . . .
We just hope you and everyone has hope soon . . .
Bless ya Gal, on this new year’s eve . . .
Hi Gregory! Happy New year!
Aww. You’re a sweetie. :) Yeah, I just didn’t want to turn Jane’s platform into a money making venture. That’s not cool. I wrote it to inform.
brrrrr that’s a hella temp drop ndfg
YOU included.
Thanks for all you do and comment.
*bows*
I’m all for that “selling sex” part.
Just kidding a bit. I’m actually fascinated by all this…
I’ve ALWAYS said you have the cutest nose …
LMBO!
*G*
So far as camera optics are concerned, the push is to aspherical lenses, especially large aperture optics. I seldom see references to apos any more, but they are around.
Software corrects so much these days. I use a program from France, DXO Pro, that provides corrections for a great number of optics, coupled to the respective cameras, for a full correction of distortion, CA, vignetting soft focus, and sensor noise. One click and you are optimised, allowing for additional corrections for atmospherics and other resolution destroying events separate from the hardware itself.
Neat stuff!
The thing is that centuries ago, they tried a way to solve the problems of resolving objects and making practical, very powerful telescopes. Practicality eluded them, though the theory was sound. I’m just speculating that those problems could be solved with current materials and technology and there would be some big advantages over reflectors. I don’t think you’d be able to top reflectors in objective size but for mid size telescopes, they could be built far cheaper and lighter and less maintenance intensive.
Karma will catch up with them…! It’s the first time it’s ever happened in 18+ yrs here for her…! 8-(
I guess times are tough…! *gah*
Yeah, I know . . . still, there should be some latitude for help IMHO.
Blessin ya, and yer cat . . . be well Margaret, in this new year.
In fact an “aerial” telescope in space would be pretty close to perfect. Smaller and more powerful than Hubble. Or I think adaptive optics could be re-invented using a ring of actuators, designed to work on the edges of the lens rather than the backside of a mirror, allowing for completely unobstructed light.
Happy New Year.
Just got home. Heading for bed. Good night and may 2011 be a banner year for all!
Edward Teller here? His new year starts soon. CTuttle has a bit longer to wait.
Google Numerology and you will get more than you could imagine. But like I said, I don’t seem to fit the bill. Same for astrology. If there ever was truth to these predictions (determinism?) it got lost somewhere along the path. And I don’t believe in determinism.
happy new year wmd — and g’nite
Think about it. Theoretically one could have a two or more piece telescope in orbit with a focal length of kilometers instead of feet on synchronized platforms. There’s no theoretical limit in a microgravity environment. You could resolve continents on Gliese581h.
This is really interesting.
Science rules.
*thinking about further statements before I make them*
All our love and best wishes to you and yours CT . . . from now to eternity!
Hide yer stuff in yer shoes or stockings or undies . . . I guess.
Danged pickpockets . . . there’s always two involved.
Did she get ‘bumped’? that’s where they picked her.
Then there was a second person who had the ‘DROP’ of her stuff. Handed off from the picker.
Maybe into a folded newspaper . . . n THAT PERSON walked away with her stuff, never recognized or noticed.
Major ugly, if you island folks are getting hit . . . local cops should be preventing this. They should know who pickpocket pro’s are, and be on the look out of them, if not for any other reason but for new crime reports of such.
Give ‘em hell CT!!!!!!
holy moly — are we gonna get one of them elusive 300′s tonight?
That would be a kick.
Are you familiar with Richardson-Lucy software corrections for telescopes? Years ago, I adapted it to terrestrial photography. It worked really well for a micrograin film, but was horrible with grainy film. I recall that it is based on the concept that theoretically, a point source will illuminate one pixel only and that any spill to adjacent pixels is due to correction errors.
Today, I simply make use of current commercial sharpening software. DXO is good and Photoshop is quite adaptable. But I have a favorite photo of Mt Hood done with a micrograin B&W film, perfectly corrected using about ten iterations of a R/L algorithm.
…You could resolve continents on Gliese581h…
*heh* You do know there’s a whole galaxy out there, right…? ;-)
Why not?
*Egg nogg? no. Champanski? Yes!*
Heh, one more to the trey! On we comment!
*G*
You dawg, yer into the grapes?
*G*
More than one galaxy!
She knows.
*developing galactic statement*
Funny it comes up just now. I used to give a talk on the first Sunday of the new year about the Universal Year and how it couples into your own Path numbers. That is the only aspect of numerology that actually bore fruit for me. I can backtrack and see it does fit me cyclically.
Barefoot Bubbly. $6.99 at the case price here, and yep, we bought a case.
We’re planning on asking the store to review their tape tomorrow, it’s open for awhile, and, see if any wallets have appeared…! ;-)
That’s an Aussie wine, right?
I like the label, and the wine is good too!
great idea dood
only 15 more comments until the 300… i’m just saying…
Get your fingers off the keyboard, or else!
You’ll get 300 ma’am

happy new year nahant — how was your celebration?
OHMYSTARS… i’ve never seen that.. wow!!!
w00t! just put navy beans and black-eyed peas on to soak, got back to the computer, and Teh Pups are almost at 300!
ABL posted it by request over at Cole’s place. Pretty tasty!
That’s so not fair, nahant…! 8-P
Just us two and Tucker….. but was/is great with the change of the new decade…. Lets hope it is much better than the last debacle…
It is now!
Bingo!
Again!
3 pints of beer, shot of whiskey, patron cafe liqueur with vanilla vodka (black orchid?) champagne.
Leftover mushroom strudel and stuffed pepper for dinner.
Nice way to end 2010.
happy fucking lucky 300 starbuck!!!
Soooo who said I had to be fair???
Happy New Year CT to you and yours…
so if this year is a 6 and one’s Path number is a 9, where do you go from there?
The elusive 300 goes to Starbuck. Congratulations!
I’m going to bed now.
wow, indeed — sure beats my brandy in coffee
I’ll take it!
Funny, but the second post didn’t take until the 3rd try. I thought i blew it!
g’nite wmd
You’re fishing for this.
’bout time for me to head out folks — my totally numb nose tells me it to time to walk away from the keyboard.
thank you for spending your new years eve here tonight. i am humbled by your doing so.
g’nite all
Voila!
The valorous may rest.
The scandalous must remain.
You know who you are.
A hunk of meat with it would top it off properly, wmd…! ;-)
what fascinates me about astrology is the big picture. Pluto moved into Capricorn a couple of years back (early ’08) and Capricorn rules, among other things, Big Corporations, Big Government, and Authority. Pluto stirs up all the dark dirty secrets laying around and kinda makes things worse before it gets better … wikileaks dragging unsavory stuff into the light of day is one of the positives of Pluto’s actions.
stuffed sweet peppers had meat. rice/ground beef/onion stuffing, comfort food for many of us.
I’m still up, can’t cut off jimi!
Night Suz, thanks for being the hostess with the mostest!
alas, i’m too old ‘n tired to be scandalous, but being a 2nd shift worker, i’ll hang in with the scandalous folk. And the especially scandalous ones can come over here and whisper in my ear *pats sofa* i lurvs a good scandalous tale.
Sweet Dreams, Ma Cheri…! *g*
I bid ya’ll a Happy New Year, still an hour away here… But, a fond adieu to one and all…! *g*
g’night Suze! Tis an honor for us to have you holding such a welcoming place open for us.
Jimi is done.
Good night!
Seasonality is one thing.
Winter changes to Spring, changes to Summer, changes to Fall, changes to Winter. Repeat.
But if you buy off that stars’ seasonality, and stars’ timelines have the same seasonality, then you buy “determinism” since stars’ timelines are so long.
Do you buy the idea that you have no choice in life?
niters all and happy new decade.

At least we can HOPE…
To find the Personal year, you need the month and the day of birth reduced to fadic numbers. For instance Sept 17 is a 9+8 (1+7=8) which is a 17 which drops to an 8. So 8 +6= 14 and this person is on a 5 personal year, the number of change.
The Path is the number derived from all three of the birth numbers. For personal years, we drop the year of birth.
BTW, notice that you actually do not need the 9′s when calculating. It’s called casting out 9′s.
nice pick!
You believe in numerology?

See ya all next DECADE!!!
absolutely not. we all have free will. and it’s not the stars anyhow … the medieval arabian astrologers did a lot with the fixed stars, now that’s some doom and gloom stuff!
None of this says you actually have to do whatever the stars, numbers tell you. I’m one that thumbs my nose to it. But then, my birth number is 1.
So if these numbers and stars and stuff don’t mean anything, they come up because WHY?
*G*
Bearfoot is a brand out here that’s lovely in their $5 Merlot 750ml bottles!
They make sparkly shit too?
Kewl!
YOU TWO party on, GARTH!
Beans!
Soakin beans!
*G*
Yum!
See 327.
Basically, running my numbers backwards really shows that there are incidental correlations, and mostly with the Personal year. Now if Numbers could be a prediction element, which set of numbers do you use? Gregorian? Yiddish? Mayan?
Then again science is all about numbers and science is supposed to predict, explain and control. I am a believer in indeterminism including scientific indeterminism, so I am between a rock and a hard spot, so to speak.
Why indeed? Why is the sky blue? Why is the grass green? Why the fuck am I always in hot water?
A third shot of tequila and some String Theory goes far…! ;-)
I wanna be scandalous.
I’m just not sure what for.
*G*
Gotta ring off too.
Interesting and delightful to spend New Year’s Eve with all of you. I believe this is a first for me. I just did my numbers and I am on a 5 year, the number of change, and I changed my new year’s process.
G’nite all!
Superstrings for me. That’ll takes 150 proof rum!
Oh, CT, you posted #333. Half the beast!
Love all Pups, bless yas and Happy New Years to all
Damn if we don’t need better than what we’ve had to date.
Buh by.
Well in the end, all I got to explain things for me is at an emotional/musical level.
I can’t say anything more about what I believe, and my life, than this:
Beethoven
I luxuriate in the vastness of the Universe, and require no explanation of it.
Mwahhhaaahaaa. Just because I can. Happy New years.

Happy New Years from the last real time zone…! ;-)
Fist bump.
Morning, and the Firedogs awake from their wild Muppet Orgy.
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins, Herbert, and a bonus from Dr. Oliver Sacks this morning. Ms. Collins has an “End-of-the-Year Quiz” — Let’s see how well you followed the news in 2010. No cheating! Mr. Herbert, in “For Two Sisters, the End of an Ordeal,” says the governor of Mississippi has finally freed the Scott sisters from prison. But that does not mean they have received justice. As a bonus we have a contribution from Dr. Oliver Sacks called “This Year, Change Your Mind,” in which he says don’t leave learning to the young. Older brains can grow, too.
Here they are.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got banana pancakes for breakfast. There’s also some of your favorite hangover remedy over there, should you require it. Don’t forget to eat your black eyed peas and greens today, for a prosperous New Year. I’m going to start the year by being responsible and catching up on my work, which has been falling behind a bit over the holidays. Have a great day, and a wonderful New Year.
Early to bed and rested to meet this New Year day-light head-on, clear and straight. Happy New Year! First light, sliver moon, clear and cold near the western edge of the great lakes.
Marion, thanks for your ever welcome snappy editorials on these pundits. I have buttermilk/buckwheat cakes on the grill, garden raspberries, maple syrup to top and hot coffee. Peace Health Prosperity and Love to be abundant in this new year.
Thanks, and good morning, Marion. Sadly, I do require it.
Another year, another chance to make a better world for the kids from whom we borrowed it. Peace, love and understanding to all, especially the kids.
Wow, good morning and Happy New Year, everyone. 346 comments?
GM, Suz, sleeping it off, almost to the forking 350!
