Via Greg Sargent, the New York Times today offered a look ahead at President Obama’s political preparations for the next two years:
Mr. Obama discussed the pitfalls — and opportunities — of divided government with former President Bill Clinton during a long meeting this month. . . .
Despite all his time studying the Clinton administration, Mr. Obama told his aides that he had no intention of following the precise path of Mr. Clinton, who after the Democratic midterm election defeats of 1994 ordered a clearing of the decks inside the White House, installed competing teams of advisers and employed a centrist policy of triangulation. In fact, several advisers confirmed, the word “triangulation” has been banned by Mr. Obama because he does not believe it accurately describes his approach.
This has the potential to be the most notable linguistic self-deception by a Democratic president since Clinton claimed that oral sex wasn’t really sex. But Sargent, at least, seems willing to buy the administration’s spin:
Triangulation just isn’t Obama’s style, and his scolding of liberals seems to be rooted in genuine frustration with them for disagreeing with him about what’s politically possible, given today’s realities. To whatever degree Obama is using his disagreement with the left for positioning purposes, it’s more about temperament than ideology: His role is that of the voice of sanity trying to talk sense into uncompromising partisans on both sides. This just isn’t Clintonian triangulation in any sense.
Actually, that “voice of sanity” posturing was what Clinton’s version of triangulation was about. For all the symbolic hippie-punching Clinton may have done, he also stood up to the Republican attempt to shut down the government in order to force spending cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, education, and the environment. In the process, Clinton defined those issues (where public opinion was solidly behind the Democratic/liberal position) as the core difference between him and the GOP, and thereby cemented his re-election in 1996.
Frankly, we would be fortunate if this was the lesson Obama learned from Clinton’s experience. And for those interested in grasping slim reeds of hope, the NYT story does float this possibility:
Mr. Obama intends not only to extend a hand to Republicans but also to begin detaching himself more from Congress and spending more time making his case directly to the American people.
“In a world of divided government, getting things done requires a mix of compromise and confrontation,” said Dan Pfeiffer, the White House communications director. “What are the things you can do without Congress? In some cases, that involves executive orders, but it also involves using the bully pulpit of the presidency to make a political argument about the direction of the country.”
Well, golly. If only he’d figured that out before his party lost its clout in Congress!
In the meantime, progressives who feel like Obama has given them nothing but lumps of coal in their stockings all year are hereby informed that the administration has banned the use of that term as well. Please use the phrase “victory nuggets” instead. Merry Christmas!

They may be right, that triangulation is not Obama’s style. I would say full on capitulation and appeasement of his enemies is more his style.
He is getting ready to sell us down the river on social security and everything else. Anybody who protests the raising of the age on social
security will be called a leftist extremist.
i wonder what other words are ‘banned’ at the white house?
Principle, integrity, fight, “take a stand”, commitment…
How about “horse nuggets” instead?
Merry X-Mas folks. Let’s all hope Barry has a change of heart this X-mas. Maybe, his mother will come to him like Marley to Scrooge and try and turn him back toward the light and away from the Dark forces of the Empire.
liberals
He ain’t got no nuggets neither.
Yeah. This isn’t “spin”. It’s bullshit.
Progressive,
I know it’s a stretch to have Obummer read any Zinn, but, c’mon… Ray-Gun…? 8-(
Here in Kansas, one of our Democratic state senators has just switched parties and become a Republican, making the Republican majority in the State Senate 33 to 7. Frankly, the Kansas Democratic Party should just dissolve itself, and make Kansas a one-party state, being a Democrat here is a waste of time and money.

Merry Christmas, everyone :-)
To paraphrase Thomas Frank, “What the fuck is wrong with Kansas?” I thought Montana was bad, but that is beyond insane.
I kind of like the term ‘DIY diamond’ myself. Gives a better sense of just how much work it’s going to be to get anywhere in the next couple of years.
Paul Krugman, Joseph Stiglitz, Dean Baker.
I’d say he wants to be on the winning side. It’s still insane, even for KS.
Merry Christmas back. :)
Oh, I know what motivated him, but what motivated the voters of Kansas to elect 33 Republicans and only 7 Democrats? I know Kansas has always been a pretty Republican place, but when I was growing up just south of the border in Oklahoma it was nowhere near this imbalanced.
Soul, decency, human.
The word “fight” in any sentence with the word “Republicans”.
Maybe Obama will grow a vesitial soul.
Or maybe all the green around christmas time will make the chameleon revert to his natural lizard skin color and all of america will see him for the corporate lizardman he is.
If they cannot see that Obama is very corporate friendly now, they never will.
Obama’s “Art of The Possible” =
Forgiving War Criminals; 10 years of Continuing Wars costing billions per month; Ran away from closing Gitmo; Dealing away the Public Option and Drug Reimportation and lying about it;
Robbing Grandmothers’ retirement funds; Rewarding the Players who crashed the Economy; Leaving Judgeships vacant, retaining Karl Rove Republican Operatives like Luera Canary;
Expediting Home Foreclosures; Increasing Bloated Pentagon Budget and Military Contracts; Privatizing Schools; Expansion of Surveillance State; Sucking Joe Lieberman’s Twattle…
Impeach Obama!
Oooh… well said.
Silence!!!!
Heh.
Triangulation, triangulation, triangulation…
It must hurt to pass those “victory nuggets.”
as in: I just passed some “victory nuggets” on the DFHs.
No, he’s no Clinton. As a matter of fact, he’s studying Reagan while on vacation in Hawaii. Seriously.

Maybe instead of the old.. “Fitz” or “First”, etc., “triangulation” would be in order…tee hee… ;-P
Merry Christmas to all the Lakes Swimmers ☺ ☺ ☺
May you all grace us all with your wisdom in the coming years!
Same thing here in Georgia. I lost count after the 8th elected Democrat to the General Assembly switched to Republican, including the minority leader!
I think that, from his perspective, he figured it out just in time. Now all Obama has to do is talk about what it would be nice to have, while having a handy excuse why it’s not happening. It was a lot harder to make that case when his party was in control of Congress.
What happened to Oklahoma?
Krugman was supposed to have been one of those economists Obama “consulted” recently on the tax cut fiasco. It remains to be seen if he’ll be invited back.
AFP seems to not know very much about American politics. You’d think they were an American news agency. Obama’s on the “opposite political pole” from Reagan? No wonder most Americans don’t understand their political system.
Agreed.
Sure he is! He’s on one end of the pole, Reagan’s on the other and Rahm’s on the unicycle working without a net.
Mele Kalikimaka, Ya’ll…!
We’re the last to see Santa…! Ho-ho-ho…! ;-)

You are a BAAAAD man!
It’s all these dirty fucking hippies. That’s why we can’t have nice things.
Obama is such a disappointment because we didn’t elect him to tinker around within the existing political realities. Those of us who drank the Hope & Change Kool-Aid were led to believe that we were part of something big and dramatic and profound, and what we’ve got instead is a bunch of old style horse trading with the Republicans. During the campaign Obama sold himself as a game changer, a rare breed of politician who would transcend the smallness of our current politics and re-define the possibilities. He was going to challenge the status quo, not sustain it. Oy….
Theme music?
Lieberman has a twattle? Is that the nickname for the insect wrapped around his brain stem?
I’ve heard that. People say it so often, it must be true.
Dirty fucking hippie music. Have a damn flower.
I’m sure that there are a great many sycophantic press members willing to spot for Rahmy.
You need three sides to make a triangle, but with this president there are only two: His side and the Republican side. Our side is completely left out of the arrangement.
Ordinary working people, their lives and their needs are not a factor in the political game they play. Ours is to shut up and take what is given.
Very good post, I’ve got you bookmarked.
Merry Christmas all. I love FDL and I thank everyone for helping to open my eyes over the last few years. Though sometimes I wish I could go back in time to when I just watched Sportscenter. You all do a great service to your country annnnnnnnd I appreciate all Of you. Hope everyone has a great holiday.
Edit: Almost forgot. Great read Swopa… as usual
Yes, but the clown posse never catches anyone. They just spray them off with a fire extinguisher before all 80 of them jump into a Prius and spend the rest of the evening driving in circles while honking the horn.
Obamas’ a turd who couldnt possibly win in 2012 if he were running against anyone but republicans. Of course, that may be part of the Big Picture anyway. The monopoly capitalists who own the place have done much better under Obama than they could have ever hoped to do under a republican. They dont need republican presidents as long as they have Clintons and Obamas and if a Republican ever happens to manage to get elected POTUS again, from their POV, yay. whoopee.
that should be enough for a Yglesias endorsement.
If it’s going to be morning in America again, will Obama prosecute the torturers? Reagan hated torture.
Good post, Swopa.
Margaret — Hope someone in your family or circle of friends is making sure you have a semblance of Christmas, a present or two under the tree. (And a treat for the kitteh.)
Obama has done exactly what the Republicans want every time and he has done pretty much none of the important things that the base voted him in for.
Obama is a really selfish insincere person who thinks his flimsy excuses for not fighting for anything he promised to do in his campaign doesn’t show. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows that he had everything he needed to pass *real* health care reform that would protect all Americans from the misuse and exploitation of the health care industry. Then after he sold us out, he acted like nothing the health care industry was doing to us was really bad. Played oblivious and then gave the health care industry more power and they have made sure to rub it in our faces as rate continue to sky rocket.
Then with tongue in cheek, the bald face liar looks at us and tells us that we are unrealistic and ungrateful as Americans across the country continue to suffer and die in silence.
And we’re suppose to fall for this poser crap. I will never vote for Obama or his puppet masters, Goldman Sachs, again no matter who runs against him. Not gonna happen even if the devil himself runs for GOP. Im voting third party no matter if my vote is thrown away or what. Nothing will make me check the box for Obama because he is nothing but the face for Wall Street.
Pragmatism is the new Triangulation.
Eduardo Galeano wrote in one of his books that pragmatism is actually a code word for Opportunism. When I read that , Obama flashed in my mind. (Galeano wrote the book years back).
blowjob
And progressives can’t figure out why the Democratic Party doesn’t welcome them with open arms.
Merry Xmas, y’all!
Hooverville
Preface: I’m deeply skeptical about the questions I’m about to ask.
I’m wondering: What do people think the chances are that some Democrat with a modicum of credibility (perhaps a Governor or ex-Governor) will/would recognize the opportunity to capture the support of the traditional progessive Democratic party base, mount a challenge to Obama, and then follow through after elected? I’m not talking about someone who necessarily truly believes in progressive principles but is astute enough to realize that he/she could become President, make history as an FDR-type, and get re-elected purely from following a progressive playbook as a rational strategy? In other words, turning Obama’s pragmatic playbook upside down by basing their assessment of pragmatic on popular public policy, not insider special interest preferences.
To reiterate, I realize this is a longshot, but anybody think it might happen? Anybody think enough of those disillusioned with ObamaCo would be willing to give a challenger the benefit of the doubt? Any ideas on how a challenger could overcome the “skepticism deficit” left by President Zero?
Progressives, Progressives, enough already. Who’d you vote for?
I think you missed a subtle point. Triangulation requires that you work with the left and the right to define yourself and your policies as centrist. Obama has already shown that he is not interested in courting any favor with the left. The Obama administration asked Harry Reid to not put DADT before the break. He never spent any capital on it. He did not push for the 9/11 compensation. He did do a tax deal that had the unemployment Insurance included. It was a small part of a gigantic debt increase and with the payroll tax cut, places the social security system in jeopardy. Look at the signing ceremony for the tax plan. The Repub leadership was present. Mad Max Baccus, the Presidents handmaiden, was the representative for the Dems. To have triangulation, he would need to start working with the Dems.
Yes he is.
Obie is reading Lou Cannon’s fawning Reagan “bio” The Role of a Lifetime.
Our shithead president is boning up so he can cheerlead January’s Reagan 100the birthday corporate extravaganza. NBC among others plan to go all-out with it. It’ll be even more sacchrine than was the aftermath of Raygun’s (finally) dying.
I couldn’t even begin to verbalize how the pipsqueak de facto Republican Barack Obama turns my stomach.
Not very likely Obama can be challenged. First he has the black vote as a block. While his approval rating is in the 30′s with whites, he still enjoy more than 90% approval with blacks. Second, he can count on the support of the blue dog democrats, another big block. If he governs the next 2 years as we anticipate he will, ‘triangulating’ even with another word for it, he will solidify the blue dog vote even more. And lastly, he can count on the financial support of corporations he has helped so much.
Now that Obama has lost any semblance of credibility he wants to take his case to the people. What a joke! The only difference between him and Boehner (Republicans) is that he uses them as fall guys to pass vastly unpopular right wing legislation.
It’s only speculation but I can read it differently. It was the Blue Dogs that lost heavily in the past elections. In many of the states where they dominated the Democrat party those parties have virtually ceased to exist, hastened by mass defections of elected Democrats. The only place the Blue Dogs dominate in Washington is the Obama administration, granted a few who did not face reelection are left among the Senate. And don’t underestimate the African American voters. They have the strongest intellectual understanding of the issues, especially economic. though their voting tends to be more uniformly predictable it is not uninformed and I know many who are as disillusioned with Obama as the rest of the traditional Democrats.
I think there is an opportunity to either rebuild the decimated parties with new leadership, hopefully heavily African American. Or possibly let the parties and form new political action groups or parties.
Well, he can ban the use of the word, but progressives put Hillary’s locomotive into the political ravine and did a W.T. Sherman on the triangulation tracks, for her when she decided that the way to political “success” was via sucking up to the right, and we can damn sure do it for him. Let’s get to it. :o)
Suzanne: “I wonder what other words are “banned” at the White House?”
Not sure, but how about we ban “four more years!” and not just the words?
:o)
Beach; it’s a good question. Are we burnt out on enthusiasm for the next democratic, progressive or not?
I’m not, but first, I think we have to do all we can to pull the political rug from beneath Obama. With his using us for whipping-boy earnest-money to the right wing to demonstrate how “moderate” he is, we owe him that.
I have doubts that we can get a democrat into the White House in 2012. Obama has already made the word “progressive” an epithet, and now that the repubs have him by the political short-hair, as more and more democrats are realizing, it’s only going to get worse. I think we’re going to have to take another dose of republican government, with the attendant miseries, before we get the chance for any real change.
As for congressional clout, the surest way we can hang on to enough of that to make SOME difference, is for the democratic party to serve Obama up to the voters like a suckling pig on a platter, and, in 2012, farm him out to some high-paying job with a “centrist” think-tank, where he can, bubba-like, bestow words of wisdom on amurka, while the republicans whom he’s so wonderfully rehabbed, joyfully capitalize on his “biparatisan” failure.
When he started bringing all those Clinton retreads into his administration, instead of going with some bright, new, people committed to real change, who were ready, willing, and eager, to take on the republicans, I was worried that we were in trouble, and practically everything he’s done has proved that out.
Next!
“liberals”…
But “fucking retards” is still very much coin of the realm, in a vocabulary sense. :o)
I hadn’t gotten to that one. Jesus, it’s priceless, Teddy. :o)
I’ll be laughing in my sleep tonight. :o)
IN THE BEGINNING IT WAS SO EVIDENT WITH ALL OF THE CLINTON RETREADS.
OBAMA WAS GOING FOR THE CORPORATE/BANKSTER MONEY$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
HE AND HIS REPUG/DEM FRIENDS WILL BE SO WEALTHY WHEN THEY LEAVE OFFICE.
THE REPUGS/DEMS WERE SECRETLY GIVING HIGH FIVES WHEN THEY PASSED THE TAX BILL WHICH PUT MONEY IN THEIR STOCKINGS(All Millionaires).
I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN AND I BELEIVED WE HAD A CHANGE PRESIDENT. WILL NEVER BELIEVE AGAIN AND NEVER VOTE FOR THIS PERSON WHO LIED TO HIS SUPPORTERS. THANKS FOR NOTHING!!!!!
~~~ModNote: please don’t yell.~~~
Funny to say Obama is not going to do triangulation when he’s been doing it from the start. The abominable tax cuts were from him secretly meeting with the republicans and them coming out and stuffing it down the throats of the Dems.
He’s been doing end runs around the House since being selected
Now, the STATES will have to raise taxes and gut the rest of meager social help anybody gets. I do wonder what the corporations who take most of this $$$ will do when it all dries up? It’s really going to blow a hole in their bottom lines…..or will they just take it all and stuff in their pockets?
Interesting article here:
7 Reasons Why Capitalism Can’t Recover Anytime Soon
There are important social, political and economic developments that belie the rosy predictions of politicians.
The fix is in. It used to be that incoming freshman congresscritters were treated like dirt until they got some clout. Now, Washington acts like they’re terrified of the tea baggers coming in…..the Dem freshmen/women are, of course still treated like dirt. (note: Al Franken)
It’s all a ruse.
And now, we’ll lose Net Neutrality because there is a little citizen organizing going on here…..which is what they’re REALLY terrified by.
PS: pragmatism is destroying your country for a handful of rich people. I don’t care what the “political climate ” is.
“You don’t need a weather vane to know which way the winds blows” – Bob Dylan
Second that. They can berate me all they want, but what they can’t do is make me vote for anyone whose policies are in opposition to everything I believe. Third party or write-in all the way. I would consider voting for one of my senators (the other one is DNC all the way), but he is quite old and not very well and I doubt that he will run again.
What Barack Obama either didn’t understand, or purposely ignored, is that when he came in, he had the tools and the mandate to define the “political climate”.
That doubling of John McCain’s electoral vote, and the landslide democratic majorities in the congress, were the “weathermakers” that American voters handed him.
The debate among democrats as to whether he squandered the historic opportunity we gave him, because of his stupidity and cowardice, or from some perverse conscious plan to protect the status quo, is almost irrelevant. The fact is, he’s done it, and it’s up to us to decide if we want to reward he and the democratic jellyfish herd in congress for doing it, with continued support or if we want to dump them so that, at the least, they’ll serve as a warning to the next big winners (if there are anymore) of the political blowback that comes from running as democrats and governing as republican “moderates”, especially in the economic and foreign-policy crises that we’re in.
But Obama’s side is pretty much the Republican side…
This made my day! Thanks!
I’m trying to find the most descriptive songs to define Obama’s presidency. Anyone know of a good cat food ad jingle to go with these?
The idea of banning political words creeps me out in a certain Orwellian way. W.H. Auden in the Spanish Civil War, Stalin’s show trials, that entire totalitarian/authoritarian manipulation of language and the masses that was being perfected in the 20th century…
Cat, he’s in deep shit with the most loyal democrats, and he knows it. Now that the repubs have him politically drawn and quartered, all he can do is try to fine-tune his way to a shot at a second term, and that means moving the political goal-posts around like they were a couple of aluminum deck chairs. Didn’t work for the mid-terms, and it won’t work for 2012, either.
Oh so now he’s “talking some sense” into us partisans on the left (and right). Is that what the political ruling class who run the country are calling it these days. First I believe we were called effing retarded, then it was drug addled, and sanctimonious, and now it’s basically that we’re insane.
Yeah talk some sense into the majority of Americans who believe that a tax cut for gazillionaires and a payroll tax cut are Wrong. Talk some sense into the majority people that believe that spying on Americans is wrong, Talk some sense into the majority of people who believe that Wall Street bankstahs shouldn’t be bailed out or rewarded for failure and should be prosecuted for breaking laws. Talk some sense into the majority of people who are ashamed that poverty rates (especially for children) are rising in this country. Talk some sense into the majority of people who believe we need a jobs bill and not another tax cut for bajillionaires. Talk some sense into people who truly believe in shared sacrifice as opposed to those who only believe in shared sacrifice for the 98%-ers. Yeah talk some sense into majority of people who actually have a moral compass, care about people other than their wealthy corporate donors, and are absolutely disgusted by the continued validation of failed repugnicant policies.
Lemme guess…the next “talking some sense into people” is going to come in the form of cuts to social security all in the name of ..austerity for thee but not for me”.
Mr. President….with each passing day your arrogance, condescension, and disdain for us mere progressive commoners, us 98%-ers…us working class stiffs becomes more and more apparent. I don’t care what words or label you ban or don’t ban in the WH, because these words mean nothing when your actions are what is truly causing such a world full of pain out here.
Merry Christmas.
Sing it, emal! A happy holiday to you, too.
Wall Street, deregulation …
My resolution is not to be suckered in by a man on TV lying through his teeth.
Mr Obama betrayed the liberals, betrayed democratic principles and sacrificed our pensions our seniors for the greed of foreign corporations, for the wealthy and for his ease at capitulation while pretending he can fight.
I learned Mr Obama can only fight democratic values and those who live by them. Its like he is fighting liberals because they are his guilty conscience and he is having a tantrum pretending the wrong is right.
My resolution is to never again be taken for a fool by a party that has long lost its principles and no longer represents us. Both parties care only for the graft that big corporations offer them and the people be dammed.
So as a member of the now NON REPRESENTED middle class, I vow to vote against those who fail to represent me and who sacrifice only the People while pretending a compromise must be made. If only they could understand we know the only ones compromised are us!
No more Mr Obama.
I voted for you once, not again.
