And the GOP weeps.
One of the main critics of the original House bill, Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma, expressed satisfaction with the legislation’s final cost.
“Every American recognizes the heroism of the 9/11 first responders,” Mr. Coburn said. “But it is not compassionate to help one group while robbing future generations of opportunity.”
Right, like say — putting hundreds of billions of dollars of tax cuts for millionaires on the country’s credit card.

About Firedoglake
Mornin’, BT, pups
To my way of thinkin’ this is one crazy dawg
Almost as good as readin’ the comics.
Gotta luv us some Coburn. Not.
Coburn and Kyl. What a pair.
How long did the dog sleep after the coke wore off?
But what happened to all the rubble? Didn’t Rudy have it all shipped to China so FEMA couldn’t investigate?
thanks to conservatives we are on a hellbound train to quickly becoming a third world feudal society and coburn has the nerve to say we are robbing future generations of opportunity? really?
Assange slams
fakeAmerican journalism. Best remark was about Mike Huckabilly.Schumer gets all choked up over 9/11 bill: democracynow.
He’s choked up hecause he didn’t get his end of the deal for being part of the coup — the presidency.
Really.
If they’re going to do kabuki in DeeCee, they ought to take acting lessons.
Posted yesterday by DDay. The Ashes lost their ashes.
He is really pissed that Reid retained his seat. Wall street had promised him bazillions if he had become leader.
News you can trust from Rap News.
Can’t wait till they report on the Vatican sex scandal.
Noun-verb-9/11 did not advocate for 9/11 bill. Nor Pataki, nor W.
Been away for while. Any reason ever to watch TRMS again?
Would ballet be an acceptable substitute?
Good Morning, BT And All Early Risers
I was really busy yesterday so I didn’t get any news. What did I miss that I really need to know. I see Margaret’s Incredible Diary got a lot of attention. Belated Kudos to my friend, and beloved Peggy.
Morning all,
The structural steel was shipped to China and India I believe. The rest of the buildings were reduced to dust. The rubble was removed to a landfill in Staten Island. There were reports that some of the rubble was mixed with asphalt and used to fill potholes.
Yesterdays bill would not have been necessary if we hadn’t been lied to about the air quality. A rookie fireman knows about particulate matter in smoke and the dust clouds were constantly stirred up by the vehicles and the rescue effort.
No surprise there. Regarding W, have you ever read about his “disappearance” the weekend JFK Jr.’s plane was lost?
The question is raised at the 50 second mark.
That’s pretty funny & something I didn’t already know.
One of the hostesses at the ski lodge I used to stay at also traveled with, and did travel arrangements, for the male ballet troupe who did all the female roles, in toe shoes & all, in Swan Lake. I’m listening to democracynow on another window, otherwise I’d search out a link. I actually saw the movie before I met the woman in question.
Thank you for that. What information do you have about asbestos?
Fixed it for you.
Good morning Lake!
Hiya stranger! How ya been?
Gosh, I used to defend Rachel but I tuned in day before yesterday and had to tune out fairly quickly. It’s turned into the Barack Obama Praise Shower Power Hour.
Thanks demi! :)
I was commenting on that last night. I’d say no, unless you feel like watching the cheerleading routine. Sad, really. After all the things that have happened, one single easy bone was thrown (after much unneccessary work, kabuki, and more), and now all "our" media talking heads are grabbing their pompoms.
Hope I do this right.

Huckabee propelled the story that Obama was spending $200 million per day on his trip to India, et al. That’s a rate of $73 billion per year. NASA has 18,000 employees and lots and lots of contractors and an $18 billion annual budget. 4 x 18 = 72. Huckabee is too arithmetically challenged to live or be Prez.
Spot on. What I was looking for. Thanks.
You’re welcome. Want some left over cold spaghetti for breakfast? There’s one piece of pudding pie and some Baskin Robbins ice cream cake left too. There’s also a half a bottle of beer in the fridge.
Fine thanks and you. Have missed commenting as I fell into some lurky funk.
Seem to be shaking it off.
Anyone listen to Thom Hartmann or read Chris Hayes’s twitter or practically any of the other semi-rational “Progressive leaning” outlets in the past 24 or so hours?
Have they all lost their goddamn minds? Obama “the comeback kid”, I loved Chris Hayes’s twitter:
“…One of the lessons of DADT repeal is that the gay groups did not shut up and simply trust the WH. They kept pushing noisily…”
What the hell is wrong with our media? Such ass kissing over such politically obvious bills? My God, starve the progressive media to death and they’ll cheer for a peppermint flavored bit of dental floss.
Pathetic.
Ozark moonshine isn’t known to produce math geniuses.
cHuckabee is too reality challenged to be president. His math issues are just a symptom of much larger ones.
I can understand that. I’m getting pretty much in a funk myself, looking for all kinds of nonpolitical ways to spend my time, as the real world just gets more depressing every day.
Nor good bass guitar players apparently.
I really think that was what all the “Professional Left” shit was about — to rein in the likes of TRMS and KO. Maybe that’s obvious to everyone at FDL.
Rachel has lost ALL credibility.
It amazes me that some of these folks have enough brain capacity to support respiration…
You too? Me Three. Since there’s no sunlight in my side yard where I have my garden, I haven’t been planting much out there. Was working on creating a little patio area, but then it rained every single minute for over a week and that project got shelved. Am looking for a new non-political hobby. Last night, as my sisters were leaving my party, I said, Whew!, can I stop cleaning now? Har har.
Christmas miracles just aren’t what they used to be.
For me, a Christmas miracle would be “Obama decides to investigate Bush-Cheney, pull back on illegal exective powers.”
A half a bottle of beer? That sucker’s gotta be flatter than a popcorn fart.
Good morning Margaret. Thank you so much for your diary.
I am getting into cooking in a big way. Started 3 years ago, but being single, there was only so much I could do. Within the last half year or so, I’ve met a lot of new peeps in the country, several of whom are foodies. So I’ve been able to cook a lot more & palm off portions to sympatico recipients. It’s been fun.
You have to take inspiration where you can find it. This did a lot for me.
Just a special thank you to BT and Attaturk and all at FDL, esp. all commenters, for all of the brilliance with my breakfast.
Or the ability to take their morning poop without instructions being shouted at them.
I’m glad you enjoyed it nom. :)
Prolly. I didn’t check. There are four unopened bottles of Hornsby though and a bottle of Shiraz that wasn’t opened. We went through the white wine. You can tell my family members are not drinkers. :)
Somone noted in another thread that with an executive order he could nullify Citizens United. That is, if he cared.
I found a stopper at a liquor store once that is supposed to keep undrunk beer palatable but other than using it once to try it out, it’s sat in the bottom of my drawer for several years unused. I drink much less beer these days than when I bought it and I almost never leave it unfinished. It worked pretty well though.
The garlic and Italian spices bread I baked for last night was a heeeeuge hit. No one else in my family is really into cooking. My SIL was impressed with all the sides. He said when my daughter makes pasta, that’s it. Hopefully last night inspired her.
I used to have one of those thingybobs for champaign. I wonder if they are the same.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.

I don’t have the expertise to be able to render a judgment on that but of course he won’t nullify it even if he could. He (and the rest of the Democrats) want a piece of that pie. They don’t want to nullify it. Even after this last brutal election cycle, they harbor fantasies of enormous checks written them by big business. They’re fucking morons.
Yep. Just a bit smaller.
Damn it. Toys everywhere. Catnip mousies, dangling strings and Neko is instead entertained by batting around an empty pill bottle cap. What a kitty.
Whoa. That’s a flashback.
Ping pong balls!
PS, how’s the kid’s nose doing?
You are correct, Citizens United is not something Obama would be interested in overturning.
What is interesting is that there are comments in right-wing blogs over concern with Citizens United. What was not anticipated is the amount of foreign money flowing into campaign chests. That presents unexpected competition for US corporations. That is an unintended consequence.
She’s doing much better, thanks.
Again, only a fucking moron wouldn’t have anticipated that. The worst legacy of Bush wasn’t the wars, (which Obama could have stopped had he wanted to) but the Roberts court which we’re stuck with.
Fucking Morons United, we should call that decision.
Good morning all. Work laptop is dying. Will be lurking as long as possible.
And as far as I’m concerned, the jury is still out on the two BO appointments. I’m gonna go ahead and take a SWAG that they’re “centrists.” I’d like nothing better than to be proven wrong on that assessment, however.
She certainly has stroked Obama the last 2 shows. Big live audiences, big name guests. But it doesn’t surprise me about MSNBC, lean forward my ass.
New post up top: Bradley Manning Speaks About His Conditions
Wouldn’t want to stray too far off the GE reservation…
Oh noes…best of luck with that.
Good morning, I hope you are doing better today.
I think Sotomayor will be centrist but Kagan is going to be Roberts’ BFF.
Shouldn’t work be responsible for fixing it?
Lean right maybe. Lean forward? I take that as a veiled reference to supporting the Obama position on not prosecuting war crimes. Just another little subtle bit of cheerleading from them.
I wonder what her motivation is. Do you have a feel for what it might be?
I just threw up in my mouth. I suppose this is payback for the “Palin riding a dinosaur” pic from yesterday, huh? ;-)
I think I’ve said this before. You lean forward right before you grab your ankles and then you know what happens, right?
Forward into the Past. Or lean far enough forward to fall flat on their faces…which, in the case of “MJ & Crew” would be a decided improvement. To say nothing of some Class-A entertainment.
WD-40. That’s the Key. And if you’re still having trouble, get a bigger hammer.
I am sure they have a pretty tight leash on them.
Yup, especially the suits and lawyers up on the top floor…
I had my doubts about O, being from Chicago and after reading “The Shock Doctrine” twice he really worried me. Then he reversed on FISA then I was sure he was a Neo-Liberal. I feel like s**t because I voted for him. Sigh!
Rachel likes to throw Obama a couple of Bones, “she plays the good cop, from time to time”
KO is not that into this WH, and the WH knows it!
Rachel and KO and others in the media know OBAMA is a TROJAN HORSE!!!
The Bradley Manning Facebook link leads to the South Kora NAFTA issue.
It always invariably takes a few years for them to develop their Supreme Justice personae, I would submit that will be especially in true Kagan’s case.
Seems like KO has taken the gloves off (relatively speaking) post-election. Good for him…
I look for KO to be terminated or replaced. IMO
KO only realized that he worked hard to help get this sellout liar elected by the end of 2009. I commend him for speaking up now, but much of what we’re seeing now is KO trying to do penance. In 2008, he twisted reality in ways that are worthy of Fox News in an effort to talk Obama – the unknown candidate with no record of having accomplished anything – up in order to help him get the nomination. For much of that year, I found it hard to watch his show. But now he’s realized his error.
Olbermann should make himself the voice of all those who were betrayed by Obama by listing at the close of his show each night Obama’s biggest failures since taking office.
A list of Obama’s unkept promises should be repeated until election day 2012 so that as many Americians have heard it as possible before they go to vote.
