GI Joe likes to play army man.

The US vice-president, Joe Biden, today likened the WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, to a “hi-tech terrorist”

As though we needed further reason to disrespect the Buck Up fuck.

With some prominent Republicans angry over passage of legislation ending the ban on gay men and lesbians serving openly in the military, the mood in the Senate turned increasingly divisive

But the good news is, the gays can now plug away at the civilians.

Re: when zombies win.

I was amused to see Republicans are now trying to take credit for the Clinton economic boom, even though the Clinton budget was passed without a single Republican vote. In fact, they needed Al Gore to break the tie.

At the time, of course, the Repubs were predicting the apocalypse from the socialist Bill Clinton raising taxes on the rich. The right are cataclysically wrong every time, and never aware of it. If their policies fail, they just hire one of their right-wiong think tanks to cook the stats and publish an article proving they were right all along. This is what happens when white guys have too much money.

Grab a spoon. We’re gonna Eat the Elite!

That Peter King is some crazy nut. I don’t get it. If he’s worried about Al Quada recruiting for their cause, why is he worried about the good old USA? The largest population of Muslims don’t live here, anyway. Not that I have a problem with anyone living here. I thought we were supposed to be a big melting pot.

Best System in the World(TM).

These men and women put everything on the line, and then get chiseled for proper health care when they get home? Shameful

And quoting, “Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who has complained over the past year about the growing cost of the Pentagon’s health care budget, declined a request for an interview.”

Could this have anything to do with the endless warz?

The Senate Armed Services Committee prohibits its staff and presidential appointees requiring Senate confirmation from owning stocks or bonds in 48,096 companies that have Defense Department contracts. But the senators who sit on the influential panel are allowed to own any assets they want.

I wonder if Obama’s review of Afghanistan mentioned that for every civilian killed, particularly women and children, an entire clan holds the US military responsible and in a clan-based revenge culture that’s not a good thing.

There was something (forgive my undercaffeinated state) in either the Tax Cuts for Billionaires bill or the pending Omnibus Spending bill (and I’m pretty sure it’s the former) that limits or flat out pre empts a Federal Bailout**

now. . . couple that with what they were saying about Muni(cipal) Bonds – oooh boy, there was a diary here several months back that addressed this – scared me so much, I bookmarked it – you can read it here

all this as we are about to enter our All Austerity, All The Time phase –

** gonna have to go back and re read my Dayen to see how that worked out

Exactly. But I guess the label is useful when it’s making a distinction, like in the college presidents group video. Without the distinction the video and group would be unremarkable. College prexys get together all the time.

It’s interesting to me, because years ago at a university where I was employed we had a gay president. He wasn’t exactly “out” but it was common knowledge, I think, and IIRC he had made a point of letting the trustees know it when he was hired.

I later became friends with his EVP (also gay, but they weren’t in a relationship), and I remain so to this day, more than 10 years later.

Yeah, it was really only when people stopped hiding and putting up with being randomly jacked up that the “Christians” got pissed. Look at Robert Reed. Everybody who worked with the guy knew he was gay apparently but he himself kept it quiet. There were (and are) many others whose close associates knew they were gay but it just wasn’t discussed and if they dared show public affection, more often than not they got beaten by the police.

I think maybe it’s a generational thing, too. The university president I mention was older, retired and then took a presidency at another university and has since retired from there. I think being out was less common among the previous generations and it has evolved in the last decade….but then, what do I know? I have several gay and lesbian friends who are out and it doesn’t come up at all — they’re just friends.

Fun stuff, huh? Spiritedness works better than rantings and ravings some mornings, I think.

My little town of Gulfport is a haven for the gay community. Many of my friends and acquaintances are gay. A lot of them moved here from St Pete Beach cuz the beach peeps were all sorts of intolerant.

Wow, it’s good to know some things never change. Send people off to die halfway around the world in some shitty war, and then fuck them over when they come back.

I’m surprised that I’m handling this so calmly. Usually I get nervous, but, hey, hopefully they won’t be wearing white gloves. But, still, I want it to be perfect.

note to Shoto

Build America Bonds was one of the items I mentioned above – this is the program that allows cities and states to borrow at extremely low rates for infrastructure projects – still googling to see if it was included as I don’t think it was

but there was definitely a no bailouts to cities & states provision included in the Tax Cuts for Billionaires bill and will have to do further digging to see if it was passed – I recall this bill was passed pretty much as it was initially offered

I can’t recall any amendments being passed, only heard about ones that failed. And those were weak as hell.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repealed

But not effective for 60 days while the military works on implementation. So, what happens now? Let one gay per base or brigade come out? Or anyone can come out to one friend every other week? The discrimination is over. Gays are already serving their country. Let the truth be told.

Semi-related to Krugman but semi O/T too…

The SS payroll tax “holiday” makes the rate go from [approx.] 8% to 6%. That’s a 25% cut to the revenue stream for the entire Social Security Administration. Congress promises to pay for it using their budget. But such things must be FUNDED, and with Republicans in control of the House, there is zero chance that it will get funded unless Obama makes more “compromises”.

And even then, the House will probably choose to fund it only partially, so they can come back to that same hostage later.
And even then, it will increase the deficit, so they can come back to that same hostage later.
And even then, it will cause the debt ceiling to be reached more quickly, so they can come back to that same hostage later.

Happy signing day, and welcome to

“Appearance” rather than “substance” is as “Murkan as apple pie, and the nation wears it proudly, even if everyone with eyes to see realizes that there is nothing there, merely the naked truth … which is always unfashionable when compared to the emperor’s new clothes, Margaret.

[BTW, what goes on here? I leave, to take out the garbage and shovel some snow ... only to return to discover that I, lil ol me, has become a "topic" of discussion. The "stuff" being shoveled around that mercifully brief "excursion" into the weeds was amazin' and esplains why muh ears wuz gettin' so warm ... ;~)]

Let’s all complain about the evil elite and the fascist oiligarchy. But let’s never place the blame where it obviously belongs. Which is at the feet of those who prop up the elite and the oligarchy. The young people who volunteer to join the military machine because jobs are scarce. And their parents, friends and neighbors who support that decision. Peace
