Nothing is more delicious than the sweet, sweet taste of right-wing bitterness. And in the wake of yesterday’s historic civil rights victory for gays, the reaction across wingnuttia has been tasty to watch.
RedState totally ignored it as did the Quitter, Putz passive-aggressively linked to an NRO post crediting Republicans for striking down DADT, the Anchor Baby could only manage a swipe at Harry Reid under her foul breath, Ace of Spades called the 8 Republicans who voted for the repeal “lying traitors” (31 Senate Republicans voted against — three didn’t vote) and Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association screetched that allowing “sexual deviants” to serve in our military will usher in America’s demise.
Finally, there was this impassioned plea from Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council.

It seems his prayers went unanswered.
Why does God hate Tony Perkins?

There’s something you won’t be seeing on a Westboro Baptist picket sign any time soon.
Interesting the only D not voting, Manchin (sp?) of WV. Prolly best he could do.
“Buck Up” Joe Biden on Meet the Press today.
Yea Joe, such a pity that the lives and occupations of people in other parts of the world are now in “jeopardy.” Boo-fucking-hoo!
Every time a Chritofascist cries an angel gets its wings.
You got the spelling right, which is better than the little chickenshit deserves.
That’s a whole lotta angels.
Will all the post-DADT babies be lining up for Apache duty now?
Like we need another reason to glorify bloodthirsty militarism.
The only thing that could possibly have been a reasonable excuse for Manchin to miss this vote would be a death in the family. That was not it and he just didn’t have the spine to be there. Blue Dog?
The military was the first section of the US to racially desegregate. The country then followed. There is actually far less resistance to equality for gays and lesbians than there was for racial desegregation. So here’s hoping the Defense of Marriage tripe is dropped next.
DADT repeal is just a distraction from the atrocities of the new tax cut law. I’m so glad that the aristocracy decided to throw the people a “bone” and right an obvious wrong that should have been dealt with 2+ years ago if not sooner.
Sorry, I can’t get all excited for this. It doesn’t renew my confidence, faith or desire to support any Democrats in 2012. It was a gamble on their part to get our support. They can go take a jump off a short pier.
That’s just what we need, more people in our military (regardless of sexual orientation). We need to extract ourselves for our conflicts and take apart our interventionist machinery. We need to focus on ourselves as a nation, not make the military a more lucrative option than taking care of our crumbling social fabric and infrastructure.
Whoopie. The Democrats decided to do something that should have been done a long time ago. It won’t be enough to save Obama in 2012. Such an obvious carrot.
The Anti-Gay Industrial Complex is about to go bankrupt. Now that’s something to celebrate.
Watch for them to get more outrageous in their downward financial spiral. It won’t surprise me to see them call for the death of all LGBTs.
We must remember that their livelihoods are at stake, and they’re not going to take this lightly.
Pity the religious thugs that used their anti-gay rhetoric for personal financial gain. The party is over, guys.
See you in the unemployment lines.
But diaper-wearing unfaithful Republican senators are great for the country and conservative “family values” no doubt.

Diaper spelled backwards is?
Diaper Dave’s photo is in the dictionary next to the word hypocrisy.
he is a sleazeball of the first order. and he’s the tip of the iceberg with these repressed bastards…
A bitter defeat for conservatives? Hardly. A small pittance compared to the billions their campaign contributors will get from Obama’s extension of the BushCo tax cuts. The DC powers could care less about “culture war” stuff beyond its ability to divide and distract the rabble from the how they’re getting totally fucked.
Probably because Perkins is on the wrong side of everything God wants us to do.
Also, it may help to remember that these are the same people who were against integration and against women’s rights. (Used the same arguments, too.) Always behind the curve….
Yay, we have DADT repeal!! Meanwhile, The One is planning to cut Social Security, and why isn’t FDL turning on the sirens?
Tony Perkins – “Ya can’t be a real Christian unless ya hate somebody real good. Oh yeah, pray every once in a while too.”
You forgot “send money”.
ooops. Obviously, I’m not cut out for Tony’s job.
“… not make the military a more lucrative option…”
Or in some cases the only option for the jobless.
Um….because he refuses to come out of the closet?
Maybe Jim Morrison is right: you cannot petition the Lord with prayer.
“A small pittance compared to the billions their campaign contributors …”
I am sure some of the “christo-fascist) organizations will also see a significant uptick in contributions over the next few weeks.
Um….because he refuses to come out of the closet?
that particular closet may be so crowded he can’t find the door…
I’m all about whatever gives conservatives a poke in the eye but I’m not sure how bitter this is to them. I haven’t heard a lot of whining about it yet.
Ah yes, the power of prayer.
yep. Used that option because I was jobless in 1985 but it’s no longer open to me. :/
Here’s a stupid headline:
Funny. I think it’s much more likely that Obama being a conservative douche is going to complicate things for him.
“..there stood Rita lookin’ just like Tony Perkins…”
While I don’t agree w/the impulse to gloat about “right wing bitterness”, glad the vote went the way it did, since victories will be few and far between for the next two years. Also, it still has to be implemented by the military branches, some of whose commandants are clearly opposed to the repeal, and who will prolly drag their feet as long as possible before final implementation. Don’t count ANY chickens before they’re hatched, these days.
And of course, the issue of gay rights in a larger sphere has yet to be secured, and a ruling on Prop 8 is still a ways away, and NO guarantee the right on the court will strike it down, even tho it’s a CLEAR violation of the equal protection clause of the 14th Amend of the US Constitution. Plus, if such a ruling is made, look to the right to reintroduce a so-called “”protection of marriage” amendment. With reapportionment up to Rs in a majority of states, such an amend COULD pass 37 legislatures. Why it’s so important to vote in mid term elections…
Here’s my two cents –
Latest FaBlog: Fait Diver “Hello Sailor!”
I’m not so sure how much Mainstream repubs hate this. They don’t like it, but I think the only goopers who are really frothing at the mouth, at least, honestly, are the snake-twirling flatearthers.
I mean, it comes two days after Obama signed a bill into law that helps protect and sustain their greed and power, the “tax-cut” bill. I think that will have far more implications for preserving this miserable status quo, than freeing gays to openly serve in our armed forces, will threaten it.
Allowing gays in the military the same rights as “straights” was long overdue. Culturally, and morally, it was a given. Now, Obama can use it to polish his credentials as an agent of change, as he goes about the same old process of caving in on the issues that will perpetuate the strangle-hold on america that the right-wing has, via it’s control and power over so much of our economy.
I think the smart repubs are sitting in their penthouses and mansions and smiling, and saying to themselves:
“Yeah, Mr. Preznint…you really kicked our butts on this one, and boy, does it evermore piss us off. :o) Now, after your big win, let’s talk about turning over the keys to the Social Security lockbox to Wall Street, shall we?”
Short of it: I’m glad it happened, but I think I’ll hold off on the frabjous-daying for a few more months, and see how the withdrawal from Iraq, just to pick one example, proceeds.
Manchin is as corporatist as Capito (who just loves Greenvest) but not as clueless. I hope for West Virginia’s sake he isn’t as corrupt as her daddy, Arch A. Moore, Jr.

Think you nailed it, Howard. In substantial measure, it’s a cosmetic makeover. One step in the right direction, but it comes at a time when Obama needed (past tense; I think this is the last “big win” we’ll see for a long time, and maybe, the last one for Obama, period) to already be at the 17 mile mark, in the marathon of change that we so badly needed.
Oh Tony, nothing fails like prayer.
You just didn’t send enough money to enough congress critters.
Better luck next time.
I would like to think we have at least until the new UI benefits ends in about a year…then when the Administration tries to extend further, he will “forced” to give up something in return, like retirement age at 70, or reduction in benefits. Or maybe even both!
It really has nothing to do with “more people in the military”. It has to do with allowing Gay and Lesbian members to serve with honor and integrity, something they have never been allowed to do until now.
The promise of equality that they anonymously sacrificed their lives for is now one that can be fulfilled by the military that many of them love and chose to serve, protecting us all. As a former Naval Officer who was involved in having to work on administrative separations for gay members I can promise you that it was painful for many folks, not just the serviceperson getting booted out to see them be forced out after sometimes many years of honorable, valuable service.
So yeah, while there are a lot of other overriding issues with the economy, tax-cuts for the wealthiest Americans, unemployment and a host of other problems, this is huge and will have a social and generational impact that is hard to measure just sitting in your basement eating cheetos. Sorry.

My thoughts also
I love the fact DADT was repealed. And if it pisses off right wingers, well that’s icing on the cake IMO.
But IMO last week is still leaving a bitter taste in me. That I heard beforehand the how, the why, AND most especially the follow-up in advance proves to me just how cynical the bastards are. That they took somehing so big, so RIGHT, so basic a HUMAN RIGHT, and used it to simultaneously try to rally the base AND to get them to STFU is just so WRONG on so many levels I don’t know where to start.
They realized they had reached a critical mass point with their catering to the rich on the tax plan, and then agreed to use this. They knew it would be no biggie to TPTB because no money is involved, AND they knew they were very likely going to lose the issue in court anyway.
So what did they do? They quickly changed gears, made out like they were doing some fantastic thing (which was likely going to be done in court anyway remember) AND then followed that up with their minions hitting the blogosphere to make sure that any and all that called foul on their bullshit would look like the assholes for denigrating something as right as DADT.
And it worked. The folks on the left that saw it as an important victory are now pleased, and those that saw behind their cynical manipulation are seen as whiners and the “purists” they’ve kept making up.
I don’t know what to do in the face of such strategy, as they are, if nothing else, damned good. But the fact they continue to use those talents for real evil (DADT is good but was going to happen anyway, the tax cut solidified trickle down economics forever and was step one in the end of Social security. THAT’s real evil) is just disgusting.
And when you see their minions following through for them, that makes them just as big an asshole as the ones performing the strategy. Some may not know any better and are just defending the D’s for a really good piece of legislation, but it’s obvious some are part and parcel to the con, and it’s disgusting.
Never underestimate what we’re up against, because these assholes are, if nothing else, damn good.
Ugh, BT that most DEFINITELY was NOT aimed at you. NO WAY anyone can doubt where your heart is, and it’s in the right place. Should’ve worded that way better. It’s just I had a bit of a run in with one yesterday who I am now convinced IS part the of the con.
But it’s NOT you. My sincere apologies if that sounded like a bomb at you. Nothing but respect for you.
I flew on a plane across the country today sitting next to a young man in the Navy. He’s in his early twenties; said he’s fairly “conservative,” but said that repealing DADT was “long overdue,” and that, from his perspective that vast majority of the enlisted personnel “could care less what someone’s sexual orientation is.”
This is way long overdue, but I’m not counting my chickens yet. I hope nothing derails this.
That said, this was an esp horrid week. This *crumb* tossed out is a good thing but merely a crumb. I’m so horrified by how our nation is being run into the ground…
Stopped at an outlet mall after the plane ride, and it was a ghost town. No tears for outlet malls, don’t get me wrong, but just see stores and other businesses closed all over, the roads and bridges looking very shabby, and citizens, frankly, look pretty beaten down. SIGH….
I think it is great that this passed. Now if we could just cut the military budget in half, then we would really be accomplishing something worthwhile.
Hey, does the photo above mean that the “crybaby conservative” meme is catching on? I’ve been promoting it for at least a few years now. South Park character Eric Cartman is the archetype.
Ah, no, Bryan Fisher, you and Westboro Baptist Church are not going to get away with that. The seeds of demise were planted just as soon as America became ascendant in global power with the creation of the military-industrial complex. Reagan and every president since has accelerated the process in other ways as well.
I suspect this is going to be a very dangerous time to be gay in the military.
When blacks were “allowed” in the army during the civil war, then the war of expansion west then the World Wars, they were still discriminated against.
It took an entire “march in the streets” and fight and die and a superb leader, MLK to make it OK to be black in America.
As we have seen, blacks have lost much progress since Obama’s election with the rabid racism just under the surface for years rearing it’s ugly head again.
I submit that this is not social change at all for gays, but merely a way to get more bodies into the the bloody maw of the elite’s war god.
Thus, I wasn’t as celebratory as some and I didn’t think that that repeal of DADT made up for all the punches we’ve taken from this administration.
Be careful out there brothers and sisters..esp sisters
LGBT Groups Warn Gay Servicemembers: Don’t Come Out, Re-enlist Quite Yet
Why would pleasant homosexual people want to be in the military, where their job is to kill people or assist others in doing so? It is, after all, a voluntary force, why would you want to join up if you know it’s going to be nasty?
And where does the Congress get off telling the military how to do their job? If the military thinks that left-handed redheads are what they need, who’s to tell them otherwise? What’s next, Congress designing the uniforms and drawing up the menu in the chow hall?
It’s called civilian oversight. The Congress sets the broad patterns of life for the military for the military leaders to implement.
Or do you think the military runs the country now?
(and for the record, I am an USAF veteran who served with both gays and lesbians when I was on active duty in the late seventies/early eighties)
And if the military thinks they can do the job with only left handed red heads then they should so justify. But if right handed red heads and left handed brunettes want to volunteer and can show they can do the job just as well if not better than left handed red heads can do it, then the military can’t justify demanding only left handed red heads.
Tom, I think there are Gay people who sincerely want to serve America, and who would like to do it in our military.
While you and I seem to agree that enlisting to go to Iraq or Afghanistan is counter-productive to real peace, and morally corrosive to us, as a nation (to put it mildly…) I can’t fault the people who do that, too badly. I wish they wouldn’t, but OTOH, their serving, and their insisting that their sexual orientation NOT be a cause for discrimination or prejudice, is, in it’s own way, fighting the good fight.
As I said up-thread, I’m glad we’ve “won one”, but after two years of Obama’s wasting more political capital beating up on progressives than doing it to republicans, I’m enough of a realist to think that, in pretty shore order, we’re going to have some other fish to fry, and that they’ll be the size of Bluefin Tuna.
Well you can’t say the conservasquats didn’t try. They were hating just as hard as their twisted minds would let them. They hated extra hard. They probably prayed to God to give them the strength to hate even more.God’s Hate Hotline was probably jammed with teascrotes and inbred bible beaters. While they thought they were actually talking to God their calls were being forwarded to St. Peter.
Nothing is more delicious than the sweet, sweet taste of right-wing bitterness.
I really disagree. That sounds disturbingly like what the right-wingers say about loving to annoy liberals. We have nothing to gain by making already hateful, irrational people even more upset.
Instead, we should be concentrating on communicating with the many basically decent people out there who, for one reason or another, have fallen for the lies and distortions which are constantly streaming out of the right-wing corporate press. Those people are being sadly deceived. They need and deserve our participation in getting the truth through to them in any way we can. That means supporting honest publications and broadcasts that inform a few more people each week about Republican deceit and betrayal of the nation.
In BT’s piece, he linked to Malkin, RedState, Palin’s twit feed, Tony Perkins, and pajamas.
If you want to argue that they are worth the effort, you are at your leisure. But keeping a straight face with this listed crew will be a problem.
