Impressed that the President was able to take the early but necessary steps to finally put this country’s economy back on the right path. This should have been what his first stimulus package consisted of rather than $800 billion of pet projects. However it is indeed unfortunate that he did not have the intestinal fortitude to do away with the death tax once and for all.

Hopefully this patchwork of tax policy can be further tweaked in the coming year to create real tax reform including a much needed decrease in the corporate tax rate, the elimination of the death tax and lower individual marginal tax rates. Hopefully the new congress is willing to address the real problem in this country…spending… Tonight I’ll raise a glass and toast to a country that believes individuals can better spend their dollars than Washington.

I’m assuming you are referring to capital gains and dividend income tax rates? The real travesty is that these sources of income are taxed at all. Dividends are already taxed at the corporate level and the company should be incentivizing investment, not taxing at 15%, let alone ordinary income rates.

Millionaires or minimum wage workers pay the same rates on the same sources of income. Seems fair to me.

So why don’t you tell us what country’s tax system you think we should emulate? Who has the better system? Because frankly the western country doing the best economically is Germany that has higher corporate taxes, a better safety net and higher income taxes – not to mention real rules protecting their working class. (Oh, and some real banking regulation.)

And if your suggestion does not include a real middle class, tell us why you want that as your ideal as well.

How bout:

The longest periods of sustained economic growth in this country were when the top marginal tax rates were around 90%. This forced companies to reinvest in workers because they could avoid paying the high taxes by leaving that money in their business instead of buying new expensive toys or gambling on Wallstreet/Mortgages/Derivatives/etc.

It’s always better to reinvest in business and the worker than to gamble on made up things. How you come to the conclusion that lower taxes make companies reinvest more into their business is laughable at best and disgustingly dishonest at worst.

My father, who passed away a number of years ago, was a “peace activist”… actually out in the streets with signs protesting the Vietnam War (even though he was a veteran of WWII and active in the VFW). He would have been very sad and angry to see the direction our country has taken…as have I. In some ways, I’m glad he doesn’t have to see what is happening.

Good news! The average incomes in Bangalore should rise a small amount over time! We may be stable at $9,000/year!

Yet in Bangalore there is need for outsourcing to China as some needs are better served with even less expensive labor.

We could as an alternative introduce aggressive tariffs. That will definitely piss off China and other nations and will lead to inflation. We’ll only be selling to ourselves as our goods and services will be WAY too expensive for the rest of the world to buy.

Or we could say to hell with it and dump capitalism.

NOTE: If we don’t dump capitalism, we have the nasty business of owing bankers, the Chinese and the House of Saud quite a lot of money.

Unfortunately, you may be right. The world’s economy is changing. As with any evolutionary process, those insisting that things stay as they were will be disappointed.

If a person in the United States has a job that can be replaced by a machine or performed by someone elsewhere in the world at 1/5th the cost, they will lose that job. Some will fight it (and some will “win” – for awhile) by insisting that society subsidize their position. But for the vast majority of people in this changing environment, the only options are to retrain, relocate, or downscale.

It’s not fun to think about because it will be hard for a lot of people, but it is reality. It’s happened before, it’s happening now in other parts of the world, and it will happen again.

As Speaker of the House, she can control what is and isn’t brought to the floor. Had she really stood against Obama, she would’ve prevented it from coming to the floor in the first place.
