Nearly eight in 10 Americans favor allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The results signal continued widespread public support for ending the military’s 17-year ban on gays in the military and come as Congress prepares to vote again on legislation ending the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” law.
Overall, 77 percent of Americans say gays and lesbians who publicly disclose their sexual orientation should be able to serve in the military. That’s little changed from polls over the two years, but represents the highest level of support in a Post-ABC poll. The support also cuts across partisan and ideological lines, with majorities of Democrats, Republicans, independents, liberals, conservatives and white evangelical Protestants in favor of homosexuals’ serving openly.
Wonder what Willard, Huck and the Quitter are going to say after it passes in the Senate — since they all think gays in the military should stay in the closet.

About Firedoglake
They’ll say the world is going to end.
But you see, it already did. Think it was May 04? When MA legalized gay marriage.
Good Morning all! Someone share some good news this morning, please…
This is the best I can do on that front. From the previous thread
I’m off for the day’s activities.
Be well.
We have to take our small victories where we can find them nowadays! Be good to yourself.
It stopped snowing.
Evidently Gomer doesn’t realize that the Greek heroes of the Trojan War all had gay sex when they were away from their wives to fight the war. And I think Greece lasted pretty long after that.
You speak the truth. Small victories. Tiny pleasures.
It rained yesterday. I made soup. I saw a huge white rose in my yard, at least 7 inches wide, with rain drops all over the petals. They looked like diamonds.
seemingly good news, pending final outcome:
“1.05pm: Justice Ouseley has upheld the decision to grant Assange bail, according to Sky News. There were cheers outside the court.
1.10pm: The court is now thrashing out the details of the bail conditions, Luke Harding reports in this Audioboo interview.”
guardian liveblog
That interview Rachel did with Murphy made me smile. It’s good to start the day with a smile.
Crumbs or not, I deeply hope that the Senate passes the repeal. We need this.
Mornin’, BT, pups
It’s said that Spartan warriors were closer to their comrades than their wives, whose primary purpose apparently was to bear future warriors. They certainly weren’t slouches at Thermopylae.
Can we rejoice in the small victories of others as well?
The new American mantra:
Bravo that all the gays can be joining the party.
Eight in ten Americans would probably be opposed to basic training, short hair, making up their beds every morning, chow hall food, spit shined boots, and saluting officers, too. But the military requires that sort of thing.
I realize how anti-war you are, but that’s no reason to deny gay people the same rights as straight people. It’s two different arguments. That’s like saying gay people shouldn’t be allowed to marry because then they won’t have to get divorced.
Pfffffft.
HuffPo is carrying a live blog of the Assange bail hearing. It’s reported that the judge has denied Sweden’s appeal. Hooyah!!
Morning BT and Firepups:
I gotta admit, I really enjoy Louie Gohmert’s stand-up routines.
Wait. Those aren’t comedy bits? Are you absolutely sure about that? Well alright, then.
I stand corrected.
On the other hand, has anyone seen this asswipe prick sonofabitch little twit MF on WJ right now? I’m about three ticks away from pulling an Elvis on the TV Machine.
Julian Assange granted bail by high court
You could just turn it off, or watch something else. Music is always good. Silly wabbit. :)
We don’t think the US exerted any pressure on the UK to lock Assange up, now do we?
I’ve found it helpful to have a big basket of rolled up socks near where I’m sitting. I can’t afford to keep buying new teebees, no matter how much that would help our economy (sorry, Wall Street), and with the socks you get the satisfaction of throwing something without damaging the teebee.
That would NEVER happen!
Of COURSE not. Why on earth would you ever think such a thing? /s
At the same time the Associated Press continues to characterize it as “Sweden’s bail appeal” the Guardian reports that the Swedish authorities say they’ve “got no position on bail” and that the appeal is all on the Brits. For extradition hearings, only the domestic agency (where the fugitive is currently located) apparently has a say on bail.
Good point. Thanks.
Do you really think it’s going to pass BT? Maybe I’ve become a pessimist but I don’t think it will.
You’re right, Marion. That was a better response. There’s no catharsis in merely turning off the tube. But, if I kept balled up socks in the LR, I’m afraid my dog would think that they’re them for him to chew. It’s always something, isn’t it?
Thanks demi. Well said. Not everybody has the opportunity to go to college and the services are one avenue that is still open to accomplish that. Pulling one’s self up in any way possible is something more privileged people just won’t ever get.
And in two parts.
One.
Two.
I have a very hard time these days watching or reading the news. It’s all too depressing.
Oh, Shoto. That’s just lovely. Soothing. Gonna save that and play it all day. Thank YOU.
You’re welcome. Hey, you! Gotta stand up for what I believe.
Listen to Shoto’s Metheny link. It’s about as soothing as anything I’ve ever heard.
well, i confess to having mixed feelings about this whole mess. DADT is utter bullshit, and i’ve always thought the reason it sticks is because the high brass like to have it as a political tool. sort of like that part in “GI Jane,” in which they really, really wanted to wash her out and in the end the only way they could was with pictures of her and another (straight) woman having a good time, which “implied” she’d broken the DADT clause.
but really, i don’t want my People joining in the torture and slaughter circus in Afghanistan or yemen or anywhere else we’re fighting pointless, illegal wars of choice. i grok that in this economy, the military is often the only option people have. but it’s still not a “good” thing to see how an economic draft basically allows the political leadership to continue its low grade genocide. the wiki cables demonstrate that our diplomats are well aware there is nothing to be “won” and that we have no chance of “winning” in Afghanistan. our military basically functions as cover for corps like Xe and Halliburton, as they continue to rip off the taxpayer and electrocute our soldiers in showers and run little drug and sex slave kingdoms away from western view. it’s nothing but endless horror and i’m never going to be exactly “happy” if gay people are allowed to openly participate along with straights.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
US KIA Afghanistan: 1,436
US KIA Irak: 4,430
Iraki, Afghan and Pakistani casualties: estimates vary to over 1.5M
US MBS 2010: 43,276 and counting
See Shoto’s links at 27 for today’s tune
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things
Namaste
Namaste, SoDrag.
Good morning all.
Good Morning, oldnhot.
Ohayo oldnslow.
Points taken. I look at it in terms of social classes–i.e., certain people are simply born to be warriors. They may be men, women, straights, or gays. These people will go into the military because it’s in their nature. They’re here to kick some butt. We can’t ask them to deny their true nature, even though. as you say, the military is being used to perpetrate the most horrible crimes these days.
I want LGBT people to fully participate and that’s it. Not everybody in the military participates in slaughter. Personally I was an airframe mechanic and wasn’t even issued any weapons. I wouldn’t have gone to college otherwise. Yep, you make some very valid points but like so many other things in this world, it’s hardly a black and white issue.
sure baby, i understand what you’re saying. but in the end, there were no “good” nazis and that’s what this country is turning into. we all have blood on our hands, in or out of uniform.
You can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Ya gotta take da bad wit da good.
And, no one said life is fair.
Good morning demi and Margaret.
Yeah, I’m hip. I fought the cold war though so my perception is skewed in that direction.
LMAO! I missed that one.
(she makes me blush)
Okay, freaks, I’m outta here for now. Make sure you go upstairs and watch the clip Teddy has posted. You won’t be sorry.
You’re even hotter when you blush.
LOL. You funny! G’morning, anyone still here?
Good news on Assange. I wonder why some video clips on the news show him with white hair, while in others it’s brown?
Gotta clean my house today, so I’m stalling…
I’m still here but won’t be for long.
M: I have been (home sick)looking at newspaper…the Sunday paper seemed to have a lot of jobs…It’s a special section, but I assume it’s online. Cheers ;)
Good morning and goodbye to all the dawn patrol. I was over at guardian(dot)co(dot)uk catching all the gutsy coverage by British reporters. Very obvious MI5 and MI6 are corrupting the British courts. There will be consequences. Amazing, though, that they got away this long with the cover story that “it’s the Swedes” who insisted on locking up Assange.

Nope. The jobs tab online takes me direct;y to hotjobs and yahoo jobs. I have to get a physical paper for the local ones. Stupid, eh?
Guess what? The military works for us, not the other way around.
USA has a lots and lots of blood on its hands since its inception. Although we are presently going through an insanely bleak period, this nation has been engaging in and indulging in genocide of Native Americans, to begin with, and has been interfering with lots of other countries, esp in Central & South America. While I appreciate commentary about how the military is the “public face” of our killing machine – so why *should* LGBT *want* to join in the carnage??? – it’s just one aspect of how this country gets all of our hands bloody.
The stupidity surrounding DADT & the insane resistance to permitting LGBT to serve openly can only be explained that there *has to be* some kind of money changing hands somewhere to keep pushing back on this. Our big ally, Israel (amongst many other nations), has had gays serving openly for quite a while now (if memory serves). Without going down the tangent about pro/con Israel discussions, let’s just say the Israeli military is plenty tough (whether you agree with them or not, one has to concede on their military capabilities).
So: who’s making money off of this??? The very “reverend” Rick Warren?? Doug Coe (of the Street Crime “Family”)?? Pat Robertson??
I doubt this will pass. Just don’t see it happening. Think Obama’s homophobic, imo, and clearly Obama’s goals appear to be to oppose ANYTHING he “promised” in his campaign. Pres. Opposite Liar.
Yuk…they do something like that with Sudoku also….sorry about the link. There was a big piece about Samsung opening in Austin….many jobs coming with it. You may find that just in the news section.
