Just finished reading Swedish author, Henning Mankall’s, excellent police crime novel “The Man Who Smiled.” Recommended if anyone wants a more “entertaining” look at the black market “trade” in human organs. This novel was made into a British tv production with Kenneth Brannaugh:

British tv has produced a number of Mankall’s Wallender police crime novels lately. They air on PBS, but you may be able to borrow them from your local library, if it’s still being funded that is… (better hurry). The productions are quite good, naturally, but the books make for compelling reading and contain more detail.

Interesing that you bring up “the farm”. My money is on organ farms for the rich. They can already produce organs in the lab so Darth probably just has them make new organs for him. Only the uber-rich and powerful can afford it but someone has to be funding the research and for a reason.

Technical description.
Basically, the Galil assault rifle can be described as a modified Kalashnikov AK-47 design. The key differences between the Galil and the AK-47 are;

the Galil featured a machined steel receivers of the original AK-47 rifles, but of slightly different shape.
The AK-47-style safety – selector switch at the right side of the gun is complemented by the additional smaller switch at the left side of the receiver, above the pistol handle.
The cocking handle is bent upward, so it can be operated with either hand.
The sights of the Galil featured a front hooded post, mounted on the gas block, with the rear diopter sight, mounted on the receiver top cover. Rear sight is of the flip-up type, with settings for 300 and 500 meters.

Granted, the only weapon listed is the Galil, but the Galil is technically an AK-47 variant and was made based on the original plans for the AK. Dealers and weapon historians classify it as an AK-47 VARIANT, not an entirely different weapon.

To stay within the fictional universe, which is reflective of real life, there was an excellent book called Never Let Me Go, written by Kazuo Ishiguro (who wrote Remains of the Day, which was made into a great film but that’s another story). Never Let Me Go is actually set in an “alternate universe” 1980s England, where cloned humans are “grown” up into adults and then used to harvest their organs for “real” humans.

Ishiguro writes in a very spare style, so he leaves the reader to make up your own mind about the morals, etc, of such practices, but it’s a really thought-provoking book on this topic (and not so far away from what could happen some day). Here’s an interesting review of the novel by Margaret Atwood, also noted for writing an excellent novel about a dystopian future (The Handmaid’s Tale):

I believe that there have been 6 of Mankell’s novels made into tv productions by the British so far. Three were shown on PBS during the 09/10 season (I *believe* in the Fall of 2009), and three were shown recently on PBS, like in October.

The series is simply called “Wallender,” because the author, Henning Mankell, has written a series of police crime novels (perhaps about 10 or 11 so far) that feature a small-town police detective named Kurt Wallender, who works in the Swedish town of Ystad.

You can check out the PBS website for more info, but my guess is that the three shown this year have already been “aired” on your Chicago affiliate. I have no idea whether they’ll be shown again as a re-run. All of the episodes feature Kenneth Brannaugh playing the part of Kurt Wallender. Brannaugh is excellent as always.

The novels, though, are the real “gold,” as Mankell really highlights the nasty underbelly of Swedish society (which is the same everywhere), and in particular, the venality and criminality of the wealthy oligarchy, who exist everywhere, and who are just as greedily opportunistic & manipulative in other countries as they are in the USA.

Israel? Most of the semi-auto AKs on the civilians market come from former Warsaw Pact countries (Bulgaria and Romania most recently) selling off inventories and exploiting a new, free, capitalist market for their arms factories. Since it came out on top in the Cold War, I think we should blame the US government for the supply of guns. :)

Part of the problem for “legitimate” business in Mexico is that the drug dealers are getting in the way of the far more lucrative (and powerful) business of the legal pharmacies selling cheaper prescription drugs to US citizens. The drop in the number of folks from the US to Mexican border towns I’ve seen over the past several years is stunning. The streets in places like Juarez, Acuna and Nuevo Laredo used to be packed with gringos. No more.

Agent Brian A. Terry, 40, was waiting with three other agents in a remote area north of Nogales, Ariz., late Tuesday night when a gunbattle with the bandits began, said National Border Patrol Council President T.J. Bonner. No other agents were injured, but one of the suspects was wounded in the shootout.

The FBI is investigating the shooting. Border Patrol spokesman Eric Cantu and FBI spokeswoman Brenda Lee Nath declined to confirm Bonner’s account, but said that authorities have four suspects in custody and are searching for a fifth.

Terry had served in the military and was a Border Patrol agent for about three years. He died early Wednesday.
