If I should fall from grace with God, where no angel can receive me. Ten Commandments: 1. DEMINT: Well, you can’t be a fiscal conservative and not be a social conservative. A large part of the expansive government is to make up for a dysfunctional society because our culture’s falling apart. The family’s falling apart. [...]
AK-Sen: The Case of Miller v. Bad Spelling |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday November 10, 2010 7:10 pm |
Joe Miller looks destined to lose the Alaska Senate election if all the votes are counted. Naturally, he subsequently wants to make sure all the votes aren’t counted. Miller wants to force a change to the stated intention of the Alaska Elections Board on how they will count write-in ballots.
Cutting Social Security Would Prove Disastrous for Democrats at Polls |
| By: Jon Walker Wednesday November 10, 2010 6:25 pm |
While more and more prominent Democrats slowly joining President Obama’s drum roll in support of Social Security cuts “reforms,” like those just put forward by the co-chairs of the deficit commission he appointed, this most recent election should give them serious pause before pursuing these recommendations.
In this last election, Democrats performed terribly with senior citizen voters. National House exit polling shows only 38 percent of those over 65 voted for Democrats while 59 percent votes for Republicans. This is the worst showing for Democrats among seniors in decades and a big part of why Dems lost so many House seats.
According to a Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research memo (PDF), it was concerns about the “cuts” to Medicare in the new health care law that caused such a huge swing away from Democrats among the elderly.

In what is now a week-long count of provisional and absentee ballots for Arizona’s Prop 203, which would bring medical marijuana to the state, the latest tally shows the tightest margin yet. It’s crazy close – Prop 203 is losing by just 2,376 votes.
As Foreclosure Crisis Deepens, Another Servicer Scam Exposed |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday November 10, 2010 4:55 pm |
To hear the big banks tell it, the crisis in foreclosure fraud has abated. They’ve checked and double-checked their documents, replaced the forms where necessary, and are now ready to move forward with the conveyor belt to evictions. If that’s the case, why is another top mortgage servicer suspending foreclosures?
O’Donnell and Greenwald, Round 2: Success of Dems Tied to Policies, Not Labels |
| By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday November 10, 2010 4:00 pm |
The bottom line is, either you believe in your theory of change or you don’t. If you believe that progressive policies such as a bigger stimulus package, or more banking regulation will have a greater impact on restoring the economy and creating jobs, then the people who won’t let you do that are hobbling your ability to succeed. Because the public doesn’t really care whether the change is happening because of liberal or conservative policies, they just care that it’s happening. And they make their choices at the ballot box based on what is happening in their lives.
Third Way Says Cutting Social Security and Public Health Care a Sign of “Leadership” |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday November 10, 2010 3:15 pm |
This is a really vicious proposal. But just because it has a few tax increases doesn’t necessarily mean that Republicans won’t take it and run with it. And there are enough Democrats in the Third Way side of things to be swayed by a “get serious” approach.
Hell, No! Tell President Obama and His Catfood Commission: Hands off Social Security |
| By: Michael Whitney Wednesday November 10, 2010 2:31 pm |
Social Security cuts are coming for “virtually every American alive and those yet to be born,” in the words of Eric Kingson, co-chair of the Strengthen Social Security Campaign.
And for what? Corporate tax cuts. Every member of this commission, every member of Congress, and President Obama himself must reject these insane ideas. We’re starting an emergency petition to President Obama and his Catfood Commission to take Social Security cuts off the table.
