Happy Thanksgiving Firepups and FDLers of all stripes and persuasions!
I thought it would be a great idea to have a special thread this morning. Some of us are preparing to have guests. Others of us are preparing to be guests. Some of us are not doing either of those things. And, because I did my cooking last night, I plan to be here, too, until we leave about noon… Paul and I are going to spend the day with my daughter’s family… Theressa (daughter), James (son-in-law) and Michael (grandson), along with their two cats, Snowball and Cat, and their dog, Max, as well as an assortment of fish. And, I may be able to check in from their tech-savvy home, too, and maybe Paul will let me see what’s happening in the thread on his iPhone while we’re in the car.
Theressa is preparing the turkey and some side dishes, including a mushroom soup, which she cannot eat, since mushrooms cause an allergic reaction for her. She’s also making pastry crust, since dessert will be small tarts. I’m making butternut squash soup, which she can eat, as well as roasting Paul’s tofurkey roast. Given my dietary restrictions, I’ll probably make some mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes, too, and maybe some stuffing for Paul, with those small cubes of potato bread that he likes. Theressa usually has some sort of sausage in hers and Paul doesn’t eat any meat or fish.
James will probably be cleaning, since he’s better at that, and Michael will, if I’m lucky, ask me to sing later on when he plays Beatles Rock Band.
Usually, there will be another guest or two, but not this year. They have a friend who often comes to holiday dinners and with whom I love to discuss politics, but he won’t be with us this year. Instead, he’ll be visiting his family.
If Paul and I leave on time – around noon for the 45-minute drive – we will get to listen to Arlo Guthrie sing the long version of Alice’s Restaurant, about a half-hour’s worth. We love it! Of course, we both came of age during that time.
What do you have planned for today? Are you going to dinner somewhere? Are you staying home and watching movies or preparing dinner for family and friends? If you are watching movies, which ones will you be watching? Or, maybe you have an iTunes list or mixed CD prepared for the day? Please tell us!

Happy Thanksgiving! I just looked out the window, it’s snowing a little here in eastern PA.
I’m in southeastern PA… and I just looked out the window, too, but I don’t see any flakes yet.
Good morning, Firepups & Lurkers!
It turns out that there may be two other guests, after all, a knitting student of Theressa’s and a friend of Paul’s and mine.
cheers all – it’s cold & clear in Denver. gotta run to the bakery when it opens here in a minute sp that I got *bread* for the big feast.
Good morning KarenM and Koinu. Just a quick hit and run on my way out the door. I’ll be back and forth for a few minutes but I hope everybody has a good holiday.
Happy Turkey Day. Here in Northwestern Pa., it’s raining and the temperature outside is 33 degrees. Bird has been in the oven for an hour and calls are continuing to extended family giving thanks and to all here, too.
I think we’re just below that snowline that crosses Pennsylvania.
Morning Karen and firepups,
I have been lurking more than commenting on the site, but today is a day to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.
We are traveling to our oldest daughter’s house about 70 miles away, but it will be a good day for family.
Still have to make my son-in-law’s favorite Creamy Corn Casserole before we go so I do have a little time to enjoy the thread.
My wife is still in bed, lucky her, but she was up baking late last night so not a problem at all with me as we all need our quiet time.
Had to check the BBC just now to make sure that bug man is still guilty – last nights news had a deam like quality.
The thermometer says 37°
I’m blessed to be sitting with my lovely granddaughter this damp and chilly morning in Chicago: her first Thanksgiving, and I am giving thanks for that among many other things.
This one.
Here, Delay’s TX, it’s in the 70s, but to get cooler later. Ive just had hour + of no electricity…funny way to pad around, see what can get done…sure thankful for the power. Have a lovely day….
Absolutely…congratulations…
Happy Thanksgiving Y’all
It’s a cool 45 degrees here, which is chilly burgers for us Angelenos. Glad we’re not camping this year. Brrrrr. And, the wind is back, which really doesn’t matter, since we’ll be inside most of the time. The dry air is not my hair’s best friend, but since I’ll be with my mom and sisters, who love me any way they can get me, the hair won’t matter all that much. I’m just grateful to spend another Thanksgiving with mom.
For sure…my mom died right now 4 years ago….Ive begun to feel much more peaceful; we were very close. I’m going to wear a piece of her jewelry today…a gentle reminder. Enjoy.
Hey, Bev. How come you’re without power?
Happy Thanksgiving KarenM and Firedogs !
our children (save one) are scattered about – so we will be with friends today – bringing along oldnslow’s to-die-for sweet potato casserole and a coupla desserts
am sincerely grateful this is my sixth Thanksgiving splashing around in the Lake’s waters and all the bounty it has provided
We had a little flurry of flakes for a few minutes, but they’re mostly gone now.
I agree, cbl! We can be plenty grateful for the lake!
Some city thing; Im in an apt. There was a big bang, in the dark. Took them a while to fix it….took my bath in the dark;)
Oh, happy day, cbl. You two enjoy yourselves today.
We’re doing something a bit different this year. My husband is going to his mom’s instead of going with me to mine. His sister, who was born with MS, is not doing well at all and so he’s going out to see her and his brother, sister and mom. His mom has taken care of his sister at home for 53 years and this downturn is, understandably, freaking her out. I’m sure his family will especially enjoy his being with them today.
Some people have thought that it’s weird that we’re not going to one of the two places together, but I think it’s just fine. As he usually works from home, we spend an extraordinary amount of time together, including 3 meals a day. Ha.
Thanks for delurking AppleCanyon2! I hope you come back on some Saturday mornings!
Great choice, econobuzz!
Sounds like a transformer thingy. But, you had candles going in your bathroom, right? Very romantic. :)
a cult film in this house as well – it’s simply not the holdays ’til that Taurus hits the sign :D
Sounds like a great plan, demi!
My son likes the part where the cat gets fried.
I hope the holidays become more peaceful for you, RevBev! Both of my parents have been gone for some time, my mother when she was younger than I am now, and my father in 2003.
I think that’s great for you both and esp for both moms….Enjoy
That’s wonderful, masaccio! Congratulations on the new addition to your family!
Thank the goddesses, that he finally got his well-deserved comeuppance!
I don’t know how your body handles nuts, but I found something new and organic at the store that I’m taking over to mom’s. Cranberry Nut Crunch. Peanuts, almonds, cranberries and cashews all “glued” together with brown rice syrup. (no additives or preservatives)
Thanks. It’s a very odd ride, but everyone goes thru it. My mother was really old, so I had her for so long….was never without her for so many years. Her spirit is so with me, also. I know you know.
I hope you had some candles, too!
I love nuts, but cashews take a toll on my digestive system. Don’t know why, but they do. I know someone else with the same birthday as mine, but years later, and she has the same issue.
I’ve had the almond version… no problem with that one.
We might have to ask you to post that creamy corn casserole in the threads some day soon. Might be good for the more wintery holidays, too.
This scene?
perfectly understandable. and how lovely for the mister’s mom to have him there today
we now have an MS family in our circle of good friends – now dealing with a serious downturn after years of being relatively symptom free – cruel in it’s capriciousness. and I’m a little taken aback by how little progress has been made in our understanding and treatment
mad love to you and yours
As we’re still a one vehicle family, the mister is dropping me and sonny boy off on his way out to Claremont. We’ll be there a little early, but as my mom’s housekeeper didn’t make it this week, we’ll vacumn, dust and tidy up. Also, we’re taking the monopoly board and will play for a while before supper. Easy Peasy. It’ll be fun for us, but, there’ll be a noticibly empty chair where my dad used to sit. Life goes on. It’s different, but it still goes on.
I did; a real blessing. Angela is very confused….
Yikes! I can almost smell the fur burning…
I’m usually a peaceful kind of gal, but the sound that cat makes just cracks us up. Thanks, ebuzz!
have to step away for a min. brb
Same here… have to check on my roasting squash. I was too late getting back from errands last night to do all of my cooking.
Thank you Karen,
I found FDL in 2005 and made my first comment on Christmas day since the family had everything on Christmas Eve.
The commenters here are awesome and FDL helped me get through the Bush years and somehow keep my sanity.
I read you every Saturday and thank you for the invite.
back from the italian bakery w/some fresh twisty bread, still warm…mmmm…and that turkey photo up top with the rosemary sprigs looks delish! perhaps my favorite holiday of the year, all about the food.
Not done yet.
It is my favorite, also…maybe something about the simplicity. I am truly getting out of the Christmas machine this year….have been aiming that way for awhile.
Also for Karen/Demi about loss…life does go on and in someway oddly is enriched, if that is the right word. My a PUAC topic about loss/memory; something everyone experiences, infused with nostalgia.
My only child was a near Thanksgiving birth, so for many, many years the birth story was somewhat tied into the Thanksgiving season….all in the
“fabric”….
Yummm. Maybe we should have a virtual potluck here. I’ll trade you some fresh sweet potatoes (they’re actually still boiling) for a slice of that bread. Anyone else got something to share. I’d truly like some egg nog right about now.
Regarding loss, I have a stained-glass heart theory. Every time my heart breaks, I pick up the pieces and put them back together and each time that happens, there’s more pieces and colors in the composition.
Well, I baked a lasagna last night (store-bought) and cooked Paul’s tofurkey roast early this morning. Now, my butternut squash soup is roasting. Would you like some soup when it’s ready?
That’s lovely, demi… might make a great blog post on myFDL.
Happy Thanksgiving to all. The turkey breast has been soaking in brine overnight and I will throw it on the grill in a bit. I made the green bean casserole last night, it’s just waiting for the toppings. There is a deep cultural divide in our family on that one; my wife believes it should be topped with crushed potato chips and I’m a purist for the dried onion rings. We compromise by going half and half on the toppings (but as the cook, I win because I also mix onion rings into the whole thing!). Last night, my wife made the “sauced” cranberries that are cooked in the oven with lots of sugar and brandy. Today, she’ll make the sweet potatoes that have lots of rum in them and are topped with marshmallows.
It will be a quiet dinner with just the four of us and then we’re off for a family trip to a weekend horse show tomorrow evening.
Lovely…the church where I grew up had a beautiful, fine stained glass window…that is a fine image; there are always the broken places/so they belong as well.
I was just thinking that I’d love some of KarenM’s squash soup. Thanks.
Holding out bowl.
I’ve noticed the same thing, RevBev… when you lose someone, there are often new people that come into your life, or people who were already there, who take on greater importance.
We lost a coworker last February, and a close friend of hers (also a coworker) and I have become much closer after that. We took on one of her responsibilities together.
Oh, thanks. I’ve always thought that eventually I’d make that thought into a song.
Hey, Jim! I truly admire the way you can be so magnanimous, even though you seem to be in charge of a lot of the cooking.
I bought some green beans last night, but they won’t be in a casserole. My daughter has a recipe calling for bacon, shallots and sherry. Delicious!
That would be great, too. If you post it on youtube, then we could see it here.
[[[[slicing up some bread for the gang]]]
Anyone hear about the air travel tribulations yesterday ? Very glad that I stayed put this year…
Was up late last night playing a gig, brain is still kinda fuzzy but am enjoying the *bread thread* cheers all
Theressa was planning to brine the turkey, too. I’ll find out later, whether she did or not.
I need to make that soup again soon to properly enjoy it. I made it a couple of weeks ago and thought that I had done something horribly wrong. It turns out I had a case of pine mouth from some pasta I had put pine nuts into a couple of days earlier. As the link says, the condition does resolve on its own, but its very disconcerting for most foods to take on a horrible aftertaste.
I love bread, but now I have to eat the wheatless variety. Fortunately, there are some pretty decent versions available now… though, I should start making my own, I guess.
I love pine nuts, but they do have an interesting after-taste.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
For me and for those of you who remember this group “Blood, Sweat and Tears” in the kitchen :)
No, about the travel….where were the glitches?
Wow! Brandy & rum in your side dishes… sounds heavenly.
Speaking of music, here’s a great song by Mary Gauthieir:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmbqb09mPGg.
Late as usual. We are doing turkey (one of ours) and a salad. Everything else is on my daughter, SIL and their guests. Big fam do at their house.
for some reason I thought there might be folks entering the security lines in their undies, like those wacky german protestors. no such luck
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I’m a guest this year but we share the work so I have a few things to make. I bouught oysters and plan to try a new recipe….scalloped oysters. I’ve got my fingers crossed that it comes out okay.
Hey, Jim. I’m thankful for all the hard work you put into your posts. You’re an inspiration. Hope you enjoy the day from your head to your toes.
HuffPo was showcasing a young woman who wore a bikini
and have y’all seen the T Shirts ?
the FDL’ers here sure know how to cook – I just buy bread and cruise over to my sister’s house in boulder…
Barry Oilbummer indifferent to hungry Americans.
Sorry, didn’t want to rain on the parade. Happy Thanksgiving. Make it a cruelty-free one, if you can.
How wonderful… to be cooking one of your own turkeys!
Ditto what demi said, Jim!
We do our best… no factory-raised turkey.
What kind of band are you in? I assume the “gig” comment means music. Which instrument.
Taking advantage of your delurking status this am. :)
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
Doesn’t it smell wonderful today?
Aunt Toby, Bourbon Red or Slate Blue for the table?
Thanks for that link… also, I tried, very hard, to be a vegetarian, but I only got sick. I was anemic for more than a decade. My sympathies go that way, but my body won’t have any part of it.
Slept in a bit and just dropping in to say Happy Thanksgiving to you all who keep me sane (most of the time)
Just me and the cats watching the parade and wishing for when it was simpler.
That’s a great plan….
Happy Thanksgiving everyone, zipping by between Thanksgiving preps… turkey’s brining (shouldn’t there be a low/no salt way to achieve the tender turkey instead?)
Winter’s blast put us in Plan B mode. 7 below here and snow dumped a winter’s worth and it’s still coming. We can move about in town, but highways? Not for me!
Was missing our planned family gathering at the cabin until I heard about the power outages on top of freezing rain on the highways and, oh, yeah, when will the road and driveway be plowed out? Maybe next year….
Hi demi
I play bass in an instrumental jazz-funk band – kind of like a jamband with sax & keys & guitar. a little project of mine, but we’re not hugely popular, just fun playing greyboy allstars, MMW & other stuff
volunteerfunk.com
it ended late for me, but fun nonetheless – keeps me off the street.
ha ! the turkey is the least important feature for me, I am all about the side dishes.
somewhat surprised oldnslow hasn’t chimed in on his ongoing amusement in watching me surreptitiously ‘interview’ our prospective host as to ingredients. :D
If you’re allergic to pine nuts, try sunflower seeds…
~ Prairie, shameless-hussying a regional cash crop
Stay warm….let us know how it goes;) Im out…later, after we’re all plumper, I guess.
My daughter must have been watching the parade in NY… she was telling me about the Rockettes’ candy cane costumes.
Hi, PS! Lots of turkeys getting brined this year. I just hope that no one is going to try and deep-fry one. That insurance commercial with the burned down house or garage always scares me a little.
I hope you have a peaceful day, RevBev!
“There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.” Thoreau Happy Thanksgiving. Peace
My squash has been cooling… I have to leave for a couple of minutes to scoop it out and turn it into soup, but I’ll be back in a few…
My mister is a keyboardist. We have a B-3 in the livingroom. You’re not in LA by any chance.
Big T-Day hug to you, sweetie.
This year we’re staying home with the kitties (Spike and Butterface). Both of us have family nearby, but both of us decided we didn’t want to deal with 4 thanksgiving meals this year for a change. PIZZA DAY!!
Since so many people are talking weather:
31 degrees in OK City (was 45 degrees at 3am)
I thought I saw a flurry of snow, but could have been imagining it.
Watching the parades are one of my Thanksgiving rituals.
Slate Blue. All the biggest ones were Bourbon Reds and we had a customer for those.
nope – living the dream in Denver. sorry the Volunteer Funk Dept website is down, or you could check it out. a B-3 in the living room – right on! my place looks like a music store too. years of lurking and now i’m getting all chatty – is this place great of what?
Happy Turkey Day, everyone! Lots to be thankful for this year, a few things to be NOT thankful for.
Indeed, msmolly! Thank you for dropping by…
I’d like to do that, but I always have last minute things to do before leaving, and can’t find time to do it. (sigh…)
I will share the relish tray I’m making to take to the Thanksgiving dinner. In addition to carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes, red/yellow/green peppers, I got lavender and orange cauliflower at the Farmer’s market. Sure to cause a buzz, although it tastes exactly like any other cauliflower.
I’m spending Thanksgiving with my new daughter-in-law’s family in Evansville, IN, and will meet several of them for the first time. It’s gloomy and raining, but I guess at least it isn’t snow!
Happy Thanksgiving one and all. Convicted Republican felon + Republican governor =’s speedy pardon.
Staying in a hotel, spread over 3 rooms, not conducive to hanging around but wanted to check in, KarenM! And welcome to the newly chatty SirLurksAlot! Please come back often!
It’s about the only one I have left. I used to follow the parades with quick hospital rounds, dinner and the Oklahoma Nebraska football game which usually brought despair at the end of the day. Some things are definitely improved.
Thx Ms M – good to meet ya!
Scalloped oysters sounds delicious!
Sorry for the lag time, but my laptop keeps deciding to “not respond.”
Well, thanks for the special effort, msmolly! We do appreciate your presence here.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I’m just lurking and working. This Santa’s helper BS sucks… but I’ve been saying that for over 30 years. I’ll have dinner later with parents, brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. This year there’ll only be about twenty-five of us. I’m bring an apple, pecan, pineapple, raspberry jello salad, and Brussels sprouts, which I’ll caramelize on a skillet, finish with a little red wine vinegar and salt, then toss with a toasted buttered breadcrumb and Parmesan mixture. We’ll see how that goes.
One thing I’m thankful for is this group. It’s like a small island of sanity in this increasingly nutty world.
Well, Pauls finally in the shower, but I don’t thinkm we’re going to leave by 12:00, which means I’m going to miss some of Alice’s Restaurant, since we have to make a stop or two along the way.
Your brussels sprouts recipe sounds wonderful!
Maybe PUAC should have a cookbook or some kind of index to look for recipes?
I made sweet potatoes yesterday, and Badger helped me make the stuffing yesterday too. Now we are washing the turkey — in the bathtub, since our kitchen sink stopped up at the disposer and Mr Landlord hasn’t come yet! — and he’s getting it lubed, herbed, stuffed with fruit and — then! — into the oven.
We’ll take it all to friends’ home this afternoon, where there will be 12 of us. We’re very thankful to have found a community here in our new city. They, I imagine, are very thankful to have found partners in cookery! Look forward, lean forward!
Happy Thanksgiving, and Happy Thankstaking, to one and all.
thanks for hosting we holiday rabble this morning
Thanks for letting us in on your day, too, Teddy!
Thanks to KarenM for this special edition of PUAC. You’re a peach for doing this and I think it was a great idea, and many have/are enjoying it.
Better than watching tv while we are doing whatever else we are doing this morning. Hugs to KarenM.
It was my pleasure… I love PUAC, and I think it needs a few holiday threads, too.
Many, many thanks to everyone who dropped by today… and much love to you all. I hope you all have something to be thankful for today. If not today, then very, very soon!
I have to finish packing up the things we’re taking to my daughter’s, but I’ll check in again, once we get there.
Thanks for this special PUAC this morning Karen – much appreciated.
Wishing everyone a wonderful day full of love and comfort and extra mashed potatoes!
Our family dinner is on Saturday this year because of work schedules…making today kind of funny. Eastern daughter is flying out to see my new place for the first time so I’m excited to be getting ready for her visit. Both daughters and their partners have offered to do all the cooking this year, so I guess all I need to do is the groceries and to open the door when they get here. That is within my skill set :)
Will be spending today on the phone with my 86 year old mother and other assorted relatives, calling my son who is with his dad today, and in general holding up all the good things in my life with a spirit of gratitude.
We’re having ham, chicken on a can, green bean mushroom soup waterchestnuts and onion ring casserole, mashed taters, pioneer gravy, and pumpkin pie….all spiced to perfection! Happy Thanksgiving to all. Damn the people who wouldn’t extend unemployment benefits…. let them all go straight to hell in a handbag.
oh LS when I first read your comment I thought you meant this kinda of chicken and can ;)
These morning threads start waaaayyy too early.
Sub-zero here today. Fahrenheit. With a stiff north wind. Effing brrr.
Battery problems seem to be resolved in the solar electric system. I think they have enough charge to not freeze and burst. It is brilliantly sunny today (the wind blew the clouds away) and will be for three days, so I may be able to get a good charge going. Hope to have the refrigerator back on-line in a day or two.
I’m staying home and making myself a little meal. Turkey breast, home-made stuffing, bottled gravy, and a new thing “butternut squash with brown butter” – I’ll see how that turns out.
Happy Thanksgiving everybody.
bwahahaha!!
I should have said drunken chicken!
I agree…I’m almost always the last one ;) Happy Thanksgiving to you..I hope all goes well. Here in Central Texas it is 77 and dropping to 28 tonight!
Hey, 4cdave! I’m glad you found us today! I hope your dinner turns out well… and maybe this thread will continue througout the day, too.
You are most welcome, egregious! I thought this Thanksgiving we might need an extra PUAC thread to keep people connected.
Just remember, Isis… karma can be a real pain. My wish for those who deserve some bad karma is that they are reborn as small girls with middle-aged bladders. Then… they’ll get to find out what real sexism is when their fathers and husbands won’t pull the car over for bathroom breaks!
You might need one of those electric radiators with the hot oil running through them. Just one will warm up a room to near comfort levels. We keep our house pretty cold, and I have one of those heaters in the bedroom. Of course, it might not be as easy for you to keep one of them going.
Thanks, demi! I do love your bright spirit.
My good friend, who can’t eat anything with gluten and almost everything else told me her friend sent her a recipe for turkey. You put a little salt and pepper on the turkey and inside it you stuff it with a bunch of un-popped popcorn, then you put in at 350 with the neck facing the back of the oven. Listen for the popping to begin, and you’ll know it’s done when the door of the oven blasts open and the turkey flies across the kitchen ass first!
Don’t try this at home!
Oh, that’s too hilarious! I can just imagine how that looks!
