About Firedoglake
I thought for sure Obama would renege on pardoning those turkeys.
The national day of Thanksgiving that we celebrate was called for by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 after union victories at Vicksburg and Gettysburg. These wins signaled a change in the course of the war and the fortunes of the union which, up until then, was very much in doubt. Until 1863, there were local days of thanksgiving celebrated but they were random and unrelated. I don’t know who decided that what we are celebrating had anything to do with the “Pilgrims” or when but celebrations with a feast, (and prayer according to Lincoln’s decree), on the last Thursday in November was about changing fortunes in civil war. Nothing else.
Eating seafood from the Gulf of Mexico these days borders on suicidal. I know! Let’s put out that eating Gulf seafood really pisses off liberals and that will make the teabaggers eat it up!
Happy Thanksgiving all! Even though all this wonderful news dampens my spirits somewhat.
Good Morning,,,sometime back wasn’t there also scandal/rumor associated with Delay’s fundraising for some sort of program for kids. Wouldn’t one think such an activity deserves greater scrutiny? Why quit now?
I am looking forward to the Wikileaks’ revelations regarding (I hope) climate change negotiations, unprincipled relationships with Russia, China, countries in the Middle East, Israel, Egypt. I hope they really shake up the current corporate-government love embraces.
Do you agree with the conviction?
hmmm… Currently 91% agree. Guess a change of venue wouldn’t have helped much.
Happy Boid Day, y’all!!
BP: the gift that keeps on giving.
DeLay: http://neutronstar.org/pix/delay%2Dmugshot.jpg (worksafe)
Boy, I feel even more like a turkey this year.
Looking forward to the book salon with Matt on Saturday.
Wow! Freeping that poll wouldn’t do the DeLay defenders any good at all.
Unfortunately it’s already been promised to be disrupted by a bunch of conspiracy clowns.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL FIREPUPS!! Among the many things I’m thankful for are you guys. I’m in such a good mood that I’m not going to crow about Delay getting convicted. So many fond memories come back to me today and this is going to keep up for the next month – which makes me sad that those days are gone forever but are also just so great to have and make me very happy at the same time. Weird, huh?
Of course I can’t wait to eat. But you know what I hate? I just don’t get why people feel compelled to “do” things with/to stuffing. What the heck is wrong with just plain “plain” stuffing? Sans walnuts, raisins, apples, corn or any of the other shit people feel they are doing a good thing by ruining perfectly good stuffing and inflicting it on unsuspecting guessts. My mom used to do that but she also would make a dish of plain stuffing on the side.
I guess today begins the season where I can officially say “Bah. Humbug”, right?
And I checked the lineup for Macy’s parade and, excepting Santy Claus, it it blows-and that includes the balloons and Katie Couric.
Now, I I might sound pretty cranky with those 2 complaints there. But I’m not. Honest. HAPPY THANKSGIVING! GO EAT, DRINK, BE MERRY. Enjoy the original Miracle on 34th Street tonight if you can.
LOL. Good Morning.
You, too, J!
I feel bad for Couric. Though I have no use for her or her bubbly style of beltway “journalism”, her name will be forever tarred with that of a fucking idiot who thinks Africa is a country and North Korea is our ally and that the media, (herself included presumably) want us to believe would make a dandy president, you betcha.
Seems first thanksgiving was not “special” – their tradition called for 3 feast days after the harvest,
Also beer was not likely to have been served – Bradford noted the barley was not great – and while after shelter and church a brew house was job one, it was new at best, and likely not done.
Indeed contrary to Fox rewrite of history, the “socialist” colony was actually a group of shareholders in the corporate wealth – which was changed with the ability a few years later to throw off the chains of corporate control and go and claim a farm from the Indian land. Fox runs with the Compact’s sharing in 1621 – the first thanksgiving – to Bradford complaining about folks complaining two years later about being forced to “spend their time and strength to work for other men’s wives and children”, and conflates this with the better corn harvest of 1623 that was no doubt just a result of the Indians showing folks where and how to get a better yield.
Seems in Fox’s world more food in 1623 was not the result of better education and more land being planted, it was all the result of Bradford’s decision to give each household a parcel of land and tell them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit. Now greed does motivate, but the concept of the “common” lasted to this day – as in the park in Boston called the Common. Growing for others on public land no doubt ended – I do not know when – but that better corn harvest in 1623 is likely attributable to education – not social organization. In any case the First Thanksgiving was a meeting of 90 Indian men and 60 Pilgrim men in a traditional Pilgrim 3 day feast to thank God (women cooked but I doubt they sat at the tables) – and to cement the relationship between the two groups (heck the Indians supplied 5 deer, with the the Pilgrims feeling so inadequate they had to stop for few hours to fire a few rounds so as to let the Indians know they were equals).
The teabaggers supporting The Hammer’s conviction believe that the new and improved Republicans/Teabaggers they elected are a different breed.
Not at all corrupt money-grubbing, world destroying, anti-middle-class hypocrites.
They’re new. Better. Different. Marco Rubio. Yeah!
Kanye West is in that parade? What a narcissist. My gosh, it’s full of ego!
I am thankful today (and most days) for the group here, that I can get a huge dose of sanity and intelligent perspective and humor on the events around the world. It helps me stay the course and to continue the struggle. I’m also thankful for all the individuals truly doing hands-on work trying to make this world a better place despite the odds.
Peace and Happiness to you all.
I guess the parade organizers figured that he was one gasbag that came pre-inflated.
Think so? I have to disagree. Well, I dont HAVE to. But gently, of course. I don’t feel sorry for her for being tarred with The Quitter. I think that her interviewee is such a moroon, it made Katie look like a serious journalist, not out of her league, by comparison.
Martha Stewart on NBC. Ick.
Think so. Jessica Simpson, too. The balloons are disappointing except for WWI Flying Ace Snoopy. But I guess they’re for the kids, huh? They’ll probably like ‘em. Probably wouldn’t even know who Bullwinkle is. Time marches on. Told ya all kinds of memeories come flooding back, today.
Let’s nuke Iran for refining uranium enough to make watch faces glow in order to
promote stability in the middle eastappease AIPAC and pump out their oil but we can’t mess with India. After all, they are our ally™.Kanye had a very good – excellent – moment when he told the truth after Hurricane Katrina.
Too bad he was mean to that Republican Pop Diva.
Of course. However, he is already running his mouth about an appeal. Here’s hoping that:
1. The conviction is not overturned.
2. He is sent to a hard-core federal slam, and not some “prison resort.”
Gobble Gobble, Firepups.
LMAO! Nice.
Obama will pardon The Hammer and ask him to join his cabinet. Delay was also a huge Reagan fan.
Sure, he’ll appeal. But he’ll never hold office again. Hopefully the appeals process will keep him too occupied to lobby for the Chamber or whomever is paying his bills for him these days.
Good one.
Went to that parade back in college. Got a place right across from the store. But the crowd was very nice, polite, friendly. Great time. One thing I could have done without was how they bring everything to a halt somebody can sing on TV. Damn, it was cold. Keep it moving, guys.
Ugh! Yep, it would be the bipartisany thing to do.
apologized, though.
Now that there’s a conviction in place, maybe whomever is bankrolling him will cut him off, and he’ll have to pick up his own check. It would be doubly entertaining to see him bankrupted before he hits the joint.
Thank-you Jane and all my fellow Lakers for a another year of taking principled stands against the forces of exclusion!
Happy Thanksgiving!
well, I gotta get it in gear. was shopping last night for stuff to bring to dinner today ande fforgot about getting stuff for a nice hearty breakfast. So, it’s off to Fruit Loops and a HUGE sticky muffin.
Parade’s starting.
OK. About my comment that the parade blows except for Santa and Snoopy. I guess Gladys Knight is OK. But she’s Pipless.
Here, here!
And the Rockettes!!!! I forgot about them. OK, so Snoopy, Gladys Knight, Santa and the Rockettes.
Title of Yahoo News article yesterday:
White House Stands by Gulf Safety Proclamations
Today there’s a report (not Yahoo?) on tar ball shrimp.
Some of Obama’s friends are driving the bus over him. What a fucking
fooltool. One can only hope, though narcissist that he is, I doubt the plight of his family left with no money would concern him nearly as much as Butch in cellblock 4
I’d like to echo the thought of being thankful for FDL, one of the very few bright points in my life right now and all of it’s community. Thank you all very mush.
Tom Delay made a lot of millionaire friends into billionaire friends.
Repugs have a talent for disappearing negative publicity – Ensign, Larry Craig, Jeff Gannon, Rove, Scooter Libby, Cheney, Diaper Dave Vitter, Mark Sanford, Scarborough,
While Democrats bathe in theirs forever.
We can only hope. On the bright side, Butch might let him decide if he’d like to be the husband or the wife. So something to look forward to…
Well it’s easier when the entire fourth estate is on your side.
Clinton is still ridiculed over a blow job. Dubya lied us into ten years of war. Not even a valid topic.
What Liberal Media?
Just a friendly reminder folks, Firedoglake has a long-standing rule about not wishing or suggesting violence, of any kind, on anyone — even if in jest.
Thanks, and happy Thanksgiving.
The myth of the liberal media is one of the greatest lies of our time. The media belongs to Rupert Murdoch and a handful of other Republican operatives – foreign and domestic.
Well, I’ve got to get going. Hope everybody has a good one. Laters.
And Happy Thanksgiving to you Lurk and the rest of the behind the scenes people that make our little oasis of sanity possible.
How Thanksgiving Started.
Sorry about that, LM.
lol
new post up top…
Giving thanks for the professional left media like the good folks here at FDL. That and the fact that bugman got popped. luv it.
This Thanksgiving, Obama’s into bipartisanship and supporting the troops.

Who knew?
More catfood, anyone?
I have to hope that Wikileaks prevails. Exposing government secrets is only a bad thing if the government is trustworthy. When a government is not trustworthy, exposing its secrets is perhaps the only tool available. Protesting doesn’t work – it is spun and stamped out. Voting the bums out doesn’t work – we just get another, worse, crop of bums. Hoping that other nations will yank a government back into line doesn’t work – they are all beholden to the same interests. That leaves exposé.
Good idea! Oh but wait…it could also pose some kind of x-men mutation risk, transforming the otherwise s/ docile /s Tea Partiers into SUPER-BAGGERS! eeek!
The stopping and singing always bugged me too, except for Charo. :)
Don’t know why, but I always loved her. She never takes herself seriously, and no matter how much people tried to look down on her years ago, she would always coochie-coochie right back ‘em.
