The national day of Thanksgiving that we celebrate was called for by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 after union victories at Vicksburg and Gettysburg. These wins signaled a change in the course of the war and the fortunes of the union which, up until then, was very much in doubt. Until 1863, there were local days of thanksgiving celebrated but they were random and unrelated. I don’t know who decided that what we are celebrating had anything to do with the “Pilgrims” or when but celebrations with a feast, (and prayer according to Lincoln’s decree), on the last Thursday in November was about changing fortunes in civil war. Nothing else.

Eating seafood from the Gulf of Mexico these days borders on suicidal. I know! Let’s put out that eating Gulf seafood really pisses off liberals and that will make the teabaggers eat it up!

Good Morning,,,sometime back wasn’t there also scandal/rumor associated with Delay’s fundraising for some sort of program for kids. Wouldn’t one think such an activity deserves greater scrutiny? Why quit now?

I am looking forward to the Wikileaks’ revelations regarding (I hope) climate change negotiations, unprincipled relationships with Russia, China, countries in the Middle East, Israel, Egypt. I hope they really shake up the current corporate-government love embraces.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL FIREPUPS!! Among the many things I’m thankful for are you guys. I’m in such a good mood that I’m not going to crow about Delay getting convicted. So many fond memories come back to me today and this is going to keep up for the next month – which makes me sad that those days are gone forever but are also just so great to have and make me very happy at the same time. Weird, huh?

Of course I can’t wait to eat. But you know what I hate? I just don’t get why people feel compelled to “do” things with/to stuffing. What the heck is wrong with just plain “plain” stuffing? Sans walnuts, raisins, apples, corn or any of the other shit people feel they are doing a good thing by ruining perfectly good stuffing and inflicting it on unsuspecting guessts. My mom used to do that but she also would make a dish of plain stuffing on the side.

I guess today begins the season where I can officially say “Bah. Humbug”, right?

And I checked the lineup for Macy’s parade and, excepting Santy Claus, it it blows-and that includes the balloons and Katie Couric.

Now, I I might sound pretty cranky with those 2 complaints there. But I’m not. Honest. HAPPY THANKSGIVING! GO EAT, DRINK, BE MERRY. Enjoy the original Miracle on 34th Street tonight if you can.

I feel bad for Couric. Though I have no use for her or her bubbly style of beltway “journalism”, her name will be forever tarred with that of a fucking idiot who thinks Africa is a country and North Korea is our ally and that the media, (herself included presumably) want us to believe would make a dandy president, you betcha.

Seems first thanksgiving was not “special” – their tradition called for 3 feast days after the harvest,

Also beer was not likely to have been served – Bradford noted the barley was not great – and while after shelter and church a brew house was job one, it was new at best, and likely not done.

Indeed contrary to Fox rewrite of history, the “socialist” colony was actually a group of shareholders in the corporate wealth – which was changed with the ability a few years later to throw off the chains of corporate control and go and claim a farm from the Indian land. Fox runs with the Compact’s sharing in 1621 – the first thanksgiving – to Bradford complaining about folks complaining two years later about being forced to “spend their time and strength to work for other men’s wives and children”, and conflates this with the better corn harvest of 1623 that was no doubt just a result of the Indians showing folks where and how to get a better yield.

Seems in Fox’s world more food in 1623 was not the result of better education and more land being planted, it was all the result of Bradford’s decision to give each household a parcel of land and tell them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit. Now greed does motivate, but the concept of the “common” lasted to this day – as in the park in Boston called the Common. Growing for others on public land no doubt ended – I do not know when – but that better corn harvest in 1623 is likely attributable to education – not social organization. In any case the First Thanksgiving was a meeting of 90 Indian men and 60 Pilgrim men in a traditional Pilgrim 3 day feast to thank God (women cooked but I doubt they sat at the tables) – and to cement the relationship between the two groups (heck the Indians supplied 5 deer, with the the Pilgrims feeling so inadequate they had to stop for few hours to fire a few rounds so as to let the Indians know they were equals).

The teabaggers supporting The Hammer’s conviction believe that the new and improved Republicans/Teabaggers they elected are a different breed.

Not at all corrupt money-grubbing, world destroying, anti-middle-class hypocrites.

They’re new. Better. Different. Marco Rubio. Yeah!

India successfully tested a short-range version of its most powerful nuclear-capable missile on Thursday during an army training exercise, the Defense Ministry said.

Let’s nuke Iran for refining uranium enough to make watch faces glow in order to promote stability in the middle east appease AIPAC and pump out their oil but we can’t mess with India. After all, they are our ally™.

Of course. However, he is already running his mouth about an appeal. Here’s hoping that:

2. He is sent to a hard-core federal slam, and not some “prison resort.”

I have to hope that Wikileaks prevails. Exposing government secrets is only a bad thing if the government is trustworthy. When a government is not trustworthy, exposing its secrets is perhaps the only tool available. Protesting doesn’t work – it is spun and stamped out. Voting the bums out doesn’t work – we just get another, worse, crop of bums. Hoping that other nations will yank a government back into line doesn’t work – they are all beholden to the same interests. That leaves exposé.
