You undoubtedly heard about Russ Feingold being evicted from his U.S. Senate seat by Wisconsin voters last week. What you may not know is that Wisconsin elected a Republican governor as well, and he’s accepted his victory with all the grace divisive partisan bluster we’ve learned to expect from the GOP:
Gov.-elect Scott Walker is determined to bring major changes to Madison — seemingly even before he takes office next year.
Walker, a Republican, has asked Gov. Jim Doyle’s administration to immediately stop some of its key policy initiatives . . .
In a letter sent Wednesday to Department of Administration Secretary Daniel Schooff, Walker urged the current administration to freeze implementation of the federal health care law — an issue Doyle is especially passionate about — and suspend contract negotiations with state employees . . .
That the health-care law hasn’t even begun to be implemented yet (since it doesn’t go into effect for two more years) doesn’t matter to Walker — this is all about showboating and posturing. Which is the only thing that matters to Republican politicians, aside from rewarding campaign contributors:
Scott Walker wants Wisconsinites to believe that Wisconsin can take federal money that was allocated for construction of a national high-speed rail network and use it to build roads. . . .
Not according to Congressman Tom Petri, a Fond du Lac Republican who is a veteran member of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. While Petri was a Walker backer in the recent election and says he sympathizes with Walker’s plan, he says he can see little hope that Walker’s scheme will get any traction.
Despite what the governor-elect is claiming, his fellow Republican Petri says the money already has been set aside specifically for building up America’s rail infrasructure. If Wisconsin does not want the money, there are other states that want to spend the $810 million to create jobs and position themselves to compete in the 21st century.
Walker is rejecting the money unless he can spend it on his pet projects — or, to be more specific, on the pet projects of his campaign donors in the road-building industry.
Again, Walker certainly couldn’t care less about the fine points of legislative requirements — you can bet that he’ll bluster vaguely about “red tape” and sinister liberal forces that prevent him from steering the federal money to his benefactors. If the Spanish railcar maker that was going to build a plant in Wisconsin follows the money instead and takes its jobs to Illinois, it’s of no consequence to the new GOP governor; he’s not there to serve the average citizen.
Which is why Republicans are so fiercely disciplined when it comes to messaging. They have to be in order to cover up their policy agenda.

About Firedoglake
California will take the funds. They are going to begin building in my area next year which is a shot in the arm to an area with 16 percent unemployment. So righttards in WS let your crazY gov say no to jobs and a better economy we will take it. I’m thinking you all won’t mind amyway that is afterall what you voted for right.
“Return”?
I second Margaret’s “Return?” We’ve been dealing with an unreality-based government for the past two years; in fact, the last thirty years. WE NEED A THIRD PARTY!!
Way to go Wisconsin!
Sad to see this happening to Wisconsin.
Great photo. Is it a new TGV from France?
Eat your heart out, badgers.
The subject of crooked politicians and road building is a recent sub-plot of Boardwalk Empire.
Been going on for years.
Seems all the Republicans that were against rail specifically and public transportation in general – had flip flopped fro Federal Dollars – and now they have flopped back against rail and public transportation once again.
They are obviously beholden to Big Oil. Oil-Soaked robber barons must keep the citizenry burning gasoline in private vehicles in order to maximize profits for Big Oil.
I hope they get what they voted for.
Sigh. I used to feel so great about having Russ Finegold and Dave Obey as two of my congress critters.
The railroad owners of the late 19th Century were the conservative robber barons.
The T-baggers should be begging for more money, not less. This is technology they understand.
They also need good roads the truck the foreign-made imports around the country.
You bet when was it sensible before the Vietnam Wars?
‘evenin’, Swopa-
This is a logical development of Reagan’s “government is the problem” directive. The willful attempt to dismantle the government has proceeded as an article of faith ever since…Republicans thus have a vested interest in governing badly (and do), because they can then say, “See? Government doesn’t work!” and further justify more dismantlement of the government. These are not conservatives, imo. They are radicals.
Yes, he can loudly complain that “the government won’t let us spend our money.” It’s always “the government’s fault.”
LOL, we’ll go with the 19th century robber baron model.
Maybe if we power it with steam and use shoddy construction so there are regular derailments and boiler explosions the Right would get on board. We can also allocate millions of acres of crappy, barely-farmable land to the railroad barons and encourage immigrants to settle on it so they can pay high shipping costs and slowly starve to death.
He’ll say, “keep your damned government hands off my government stimulus money!”
Was it before the Vietnam Wars? A short time?
Nah, does not fit the message. He needs to call it “our money” and make sure to mention how “the government” is not letting him spend it.
He will scream loud and long to burnish his wingnut cred, then take the money while complaining about tyrranical big government.
Was there ever sanity before the Vietnam wars. Third Party definitely. Call it The “Green Tea Party”
Right, stoking the warming fires of victimhood and ignoring obvious contradictions.
Don’t forget,”How dare that Islamofascist Barack Hussein Obama try to come in here and tell us how to spend our money!”
First we get this train, next they’ll be declaring Sharia law!
Maybe something like,”The Return of Government Even More Unreality-based Than Now.”
Yep.Stalin built railroads too, didn’t he? He is obviously just exactly like Stalin, allocating money for rail construction. Only a Kenyan Muslim tyrant who had combined the ideologies of Stalin, Hitler, and Sargon the Great into a synthesis of Communism and Black Liberation theology and then deceitfully stolen the Presidential election would do a thing like that.
Yes
Sorry for the repeats but they were not posting. Portland has light rail and t gp from SCal to NCal on something beside a slow boat to China would be wonderful!
But it’s much worse! The rail network is the centerpiece of his diabolical plan to link Mexico and the USA, destroy the dollar in favor of the Amero and flood the country will Mexicans! Then he imposes the Muslim religion on all, and makes Sharia law the law of the land.
What a day at the Lake…started early with pic of W….’nuf said. Now this. And the wars go on.
Ah yes. All those Catholics from Mexico will go for sharia law.
If we continue on this track, the Mexicans will be building a barrier to keep US citizens out of Mexico.
Hey, Ron. You’re teaching history now. If I remember correctly. Good On You. Teach them. Share with us.
Yep. And with railways, it’ll be easier to put Christians and Glen Beck fans into the prison camps.
It’s sometimes too rough for me here. Yes. Reality is challenging. The snark doesn’t make it easier. Nuff said about that. I can understand why people stay away from politics and trying to be compassionate. But, still, I feel the tug.
I live in WI. We brought you Fighting Bob LaFollette and the Progressive Party as well as Joe McCarthy. Looks like we’ve gone back to the dark side of our cheesy natures.
Gov-elect Walker’s Wiki page notes:
“He then attended Marquette University from 1986 to 1990, but dropped out during his senior year, amid sabotage of the collegiate presidential election, with a 2.59 GPA to accept a full-time Marketing and Development position at the Red Cross.”
Ron Johnson who beat out Russ Feingold married into the business he runs. Here’s his view on climate change:”Johnson has called scientists who attribute global warming to man-made causes “crazy” and has said the theory is “lunacy”. He has said the source of the climate change is “sunspot activity or just something in the geologic eons of time.”
Ignorant ideologues are in the ascendency here.
Thanks hon. I’m doing the best I can…You would have liked the lesson on the Reformation I taught my tenth graders…After covering the event, I had them put together a list of demands for school reform, and then march down and tape it to the principal’s office door.
They loved it.
Tape? No thumb tacks? I’m kidding of course. Good for you.
I admire you teachers so much. My sister is teaching solids, vs. flats right now to her 4th graders. I suggested she talk about the vapor trail thingy to her kids. Because we live on a sphere. 3-d baby. How things appear.
Nail that on the wall. RON D !!!
Who replaced Dave Obey? A republican, right?
I used to work for him, and was amazed that he managed to get re-elected again and again in Mel Laird’s old district.
Man, there were some CRAZY constituents there!!
(((demi)))
And my principal, may the Powers bless him, came to my class to “answer the charges.”
Adding you, personally, and your peeps to my lifting up list tonight.
Thank you.
noblejoanie, how on earth did Wisconsin get cumulatively crazy enough to elect Johnson & Walker?
A crazy House member here & there, but the entire STATE????
Mmom,
I’m from WI, also and not real happy about the election results. At the state level we are also looking at a quick vote in a Republican congress for Arizona-like anti-immigration status checks, removal of same-day voter registration, removal of the smoking ban and instituting real ID. Government sector employees are going to have to fight to keep jobs and benefits, property taxes will jump as state aids dry up for municipalities and the entire control of redistricting is Republican.
On the Fed level Johnson is already teamimg up with Jim Demint who endorsed Johnson, to fight earmarks. Wonder if Johnson will be taking any more government subsidies for his business.
It’s not going to be a happy new year
It seems to me that we are going to wind up with a much stronger high-speed rail program with these withdrawals or refusals. The major flaw in the program as announced was that it was obviously constructed to try to spread the goodies around, with two-for-a-nickel state capitals like Madison getting priority treatment for high speed runs to a major city just around the bend–mostly so the state legislators can get to a night club when they want to. I lived in Madison–twice–and loved it, but it is hardly a major economic driver or transportation hub like Chicago or NY–Boston, or LA, places where millions of Americans–and key American job centers–would be served by high speed rail.
So, if some of these silly places that never really felt a true need now drop out, it means more money for the places that are really committed to and really need this improved rail service.
I’m in favor of electing more and more conservative state governors. and i’m hoping that they continue to reject these trains and all the ‘bridges to nowhere’ type projects that have been diverting needed Federal capital–my tax dollars–from where it all might actually do some good–like all the states with liberal governors.

They really are trying to kill us!
Democrats were warned that their version of HCR would cost them votes. Seems they were all hung together. A 5000 page bill could have been a few pages long if they just extended medicare.
No, it’s the experimental JR–Maglev from Japan.
