The Decider, playing the oh-so-popular-among-Bush-apologists “history will be the judge” card with Matt Lauer.
“I hope I’m judged a success, but I’m going to be dead, Matt, when they finally figure it out.”
Since Poppy Bush is in his 80s and showing no signs of slowing down, and Barb isn’t too far off, the Decider could be around until the 2040s. So even though we’re supposed to wait, let’s give it a shot now, shall we?
His record includes: two failed, unfunded wars (including one totally unnecessary one), worst job record of any post-war president, the only two-term president to preside over declining median income, an increase of poverty and the uninsured, turning a record budget surplus into a record deficit, the worst financial collapse since the Great Depression, the worst domestic attack in US history, the failure to address global warming or our dependence on oil, presiding over the largest gap between rich and poor since the ’20s, breaking the law and besmirching America’s reputation by torturing prisoners, and playing guitar while a US city drowned.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say he won’t be judged a success.

About Firedoglake
Legacy silver-spoon sniggering frat-boy Chimpie really doesn’t give a sh*t what anyone thinks anyway. Pass the bourbon & branch, W got his, EFF the restaya’s. Don’t like? Too bad, so sad, daddy’s Mr. CIA. Figure it out.
I have to agree.
While we’re waiting, here’s a guy named Hugh’s comprehensive list of Bush scandals, currently at 400:

Wounded Nation
Poor little millionare boy, just wanted to be loved and forgiven by his mother, just like Dick Nixon. Then of course he sobered up and wanted to have a legacy bigger then his Daddy’s, more like his Grandpa’s with FDR & WWII. Same old greedy rich people, doesn’t matter if it’s oil money, armaments, or drug money, they’re all the same. You can’t print enough money for them all.
he’s a success if you were one of his corporation donor pals
Still would rather have him Preznit than Obama. Dubya is just a fun loving not-so-bright guy who likes to get drunk. Obama is a lying psychopath.
Worst of All Time!! I would love to see this guy live long enough to figure that out too. I can just hear him 30 years from now, “wow, still no one as bad as me . . . ” Even people on fox have stopped sticking up for the guy.
this was floated to him during his presidency, he needed to be able to live with himself and cheney told him stuff like this so he would keep being cheney’s sock puppet
(now there’s a picture I don’t want to imagine)
Well, then let’s hope that outcome arrives soon, so we can officially declare him the worst evah.
Dead drunk, maybe.
Good post.
I’ve actually heard them use this meme on Iraq — but not the entire presidency.
Sliding scale!
Corporations will write the history of this presidency, and they will judge it a success. The serfs will wonder, but will have neither the reading comprehension nor the reasoning skills to follow their vague unease to its logical conclusion. So, Americans will accept what they are fed by their Owners: Bush was the start of the wonderful Second American Century.
Maybe if history grades on a curve…
He sure did get snippy and Babs-like when Kanye came up. That’s the W we need to see more of: defensive, angry, wounded.
Bush On TARP: I Couldn’t Have Lived With Myself If Country Suffered Second Depression
If he can’t cope with one loudmouthed (but accurate) musician, he should just stay home and drink.
Jan and Dean
I love how 9/11 kind of sucked but being dissed by Kanye was the WORST DAY EVAH!
George is so much like my ex, Blue. If he were to read your truthful account, most likely he would simply just smile and say “thank you for the compliment”…
I also want to ask if anyone reading this plans to be attending the GWB ground-breaking ceremony at the GWB Presidential Center site at SMU in Dallas, TX on Tuesday, November 16th. Cindy Sheehan indicated through blog posts that she and others plan to be there…If you plan to attend this event, please leave a message here or wherever FDL allows it to be posted…Thanks…
He will be judged a tremendous success, if the Tejas Board of Edu has any say in the matter.
Absolutely. It’s already started.
Well, he’s down with the Blacks, ya know.
Did Katrina even come up ? Or the Housing Bubble ?
Destruction of Constitutional government, gutting of the Bill of Rights, promoting authoritarianism…can’t leave that out.
Check it out.
Speaking as a former drunk — no way. He was and still is a drunk.
In theory, this might help to speed up the judgement of history.
Great move, SMU!
On the other hand, President Obama is the worst president in U.S. history, the stimulus was a failure, everyone already knows this, two years is plenty of time to judge and the November elections were a clear and obvious sign that the American public knows it too.*
*(Though it must be acknowledged that GWB is alone among his party by not himself playing this line.)
No, you won’t! We have that answer to that question in real time; YOU SUCK!!!!!!!
I guess he doesn’t know we have suffered the second depression
where the hell is the bubble this guy lives
the stimulus wasn’t close to a failure, it was a success, it just wasn’t as succesful as it would have been if it had been done right
where did you get your rubbish from?
Ummm, maybe for the Most Successful Display of a Preznit’s Codpiece. Evah.
Jo Fish !
Let’s hope we know soon.
Hey, Petro how’s it going? Long time no see :-)
Executive Branch abuses of power is not a partisan issue, if we are a nation of laws. While underlings are not at issue for following orders, those who crafted any that are in fact against the laws of the United States or Canada, cannot be just given a wink & nod.

Linkin Park’s ode to Bush and Katrina – The Little Things Give You Away
Haunting shit.
Since they’re the ones that make the news and write the history books now, he’ll be judged highly successful.
I think Obama may beat him on these measures, and before 2040.
But what about his time as High Priest In Chief, why wait?
Would have edited to add, if the &%* thing had let me:
Of course Obama would have to be a TWO TERM president to “succeed” on those last ones.
Fanciful list: “the worst domestic attack in US history, the failure to address global warming or our dependence on oil”

Couldn’t you make a case that the little incident in Pearl Harbor was pretty good sized, took place on American soil, and messed up the civilian situation, too? There isn’t anything he, or anybody else, can do about the vagaries of climate so cross that one off. Was he supposed to make everyone get into a wind-powered Prius or something?
You probably shouldn’t have slept through that second trip through the 5th grade.
Bush could settle this historical legacy question NOW. Drop dead!
“…when they finally figure it out.”
We’ve already figured it out, Georgie. The future is now. You sucked as President. You did grave and needless harm that could have been avoided and you sank to the lowest of the low when you gave the green light to torture.
me likey…or drink yourself to death,no liver transplant
GEORGE W 5 BUCK A GALLONGAS BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH! heckofajob doucheNozzle
Reducing carbon emissions wouldn’t help the situation, eh? Can you show my scientific evidence to support your statement, cause I can show you mine.
No need to make a case. You’re stating facts. BT said
which is true, if you’re looking at it from the loss of life angle, which seems to be the public standard when measuring these things.
Pesky fucking facts, eh? Took about 6 minutes to dig that shit up. Who can be bothered?
I’m pretty sure I was kidding.
So your answer to the litany of historic, cataclysmic failures under W. is … “Pearl Harbor was bad, too”? Awesome rebuttal!
BTW, Hawaii was not “domestic soil” in 1941 — it was a territory. And there were more American casualties on 9/11 than 12/7/41.
And yes, punting on energy for 8 years isn’t a commendable record.
The Shrub is wrong again…he is now and has been the worst president in the history of the United States. We don’t have to wait for history to judge, it has.
Nothing like staking your place in history on Republican right-wing revisionism. Hint: it will start with the Texas School Board.
“You just keep on spouting those GOP talking points:
“We know that the stimulus, the nearly trillion dollars that were spent that just created more debt, did not work.”
– Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, 10/31/10
VERSUS
“[The stimulus] increased the number of people employed by between 1.4 million and 3.3 million.”
– The Congressional Budget Office, 08/01/10””
Thanks He’s mouldering, ALREADY!
Fixed it for you :)
The phrase “when they finally figure it out” may be one of those times when George Bush blurts out the truth instead of talking points. The Bush administration was the most secretive in history. What we don’t know about it is far less than what we know so far.
Fidel Castro’s book was “History Will Absolve Me”.
The difference, of course is that no matter what horrible acts committed during his rule and how he is (and will be viewed), he seems far more interested in doing things to change his legacy and apologizing for mistreatments than Bush.
Going on a few talk shows doesn’t create a “legacy”, you manchild loser.
Wow, you are ~~~Edited by Moderator. Disagree without insulting others~~~. I suppose that’s what the nailhead is about. Hawaii was a territory in 1941, not domestic American soil, the target was military, not civilian. It wasn’t the “vagaries of climate” that was the problem, it was the total lack of planning for or response to the result. The Prius remark displays your ~~~Edited by Moderator~~~. And you accuse someone of not paying attention in 5th grade” You need to start back in ~~~Edited by Moderator~~~, if they don’t reject you as irremediable there. This is an example of the profound ignorance and irresponsibility that elected George W. Bush, the worst, most anti-American president in this country’s history, alive or dead, skeletons uncloseted or not.
Nixon, Reagan and Bush are as close as this country dare go toward, Lenin, Stalin and Hitler. These were the 3 worst presidencies in this country’s history, all within this generation. I’m not sure the Constitution, as excellent a document as it is, will be able to protect the current American electorate from its own self-destructive SMU/Texas Bd. of Ed. stupidity.
Moderator, is the fact that Hawaii was not a state in 1941 subject to debate? If someone ignores that fact, are they not being ignorant?
~~~Mod Note: Make your point without insulting and name calling~~~
Blue Texan,
I know this is personal to you since you are from Texas and G W Bush launched himself from there, but why post this? I think it is safe to say that 100 percent of Firedoglake dislikes Bush II, intensely. Outside of the poodle media, let this guy stay gone from the public consciousness. Next subject…………
Oh well. See you at the barricades.
So why is he still around? /s
A success from whose point of view? Clearly for the average person or for anyone else who cares about the future of the world it was an unmitigated disaster. But I doubt that’s the point of view that Bush concerns himself with.
George W is above the judgement of contemporary history, just as he is above the law. This comment from his book is in keeping with his distaste for democracy and prerogative as a member of the ruling class. It is solipsistic, elitist and contemptuous.
At least as far as textbooks go, George W is already in current editions. He is typically judiciously treated in keeping with the overriding narrative of imperial American Exceptionalism.
This is one of the main problems i have with the country of my birth; that slime like this is allowed to profit from his incompetence/malfeasance/corruption. This moron should go down in history next to a copy of “My Pet Goat” and a glowing exhibition of the warnings preceeding the September 11 attacks and him running like a scared little girl instead of stepping up to lead. Hell, Giuliani was far more of a leader than he was that morning. Don’t even get me going on the mountain of evidence surrounding the attacks. No, his history is already written, but it’s unlikely he’ll ever pay any price for it.
