The Affordable Care Act was a tremendous Democratic victory, so why all the grousing from the left?

DE Sen: Flawed O’Donnell Helps Move Seat Firmly into Dem Column |
| By: Jon Walker Wednesday October 6, 2010 6:20 pm |
GOP nominee Christine O’Donnell is clearly one extremely flawed candidate, and her upset win in the Republican primary helped all but guarantee that Democrats will keep control of this open Senate seat. Two new polls have Democrat Chris Coons leading by double digits.
Pelosi Against Social Security Cuts, Retirement Age Increase |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday October 6, 2010 5:30 pm |
I think it’s valuable that Pelosi wouldn’t give a vote of confidence to anyone on the deficit commission but who she appointed, and that she savaged the idea of raising the retirement age or cutting benefits. In the end, that could play a role when the vote-counting begins.
Daily Beast’s Tina Brown Untroubled as WaPo by Howie Kurtz’s CNN Conflict |
| By: Teddy Partridge Wednesday October 6, 2010 4:40 pm |
Those who observe American media, and observe what passes for Legacy Media’s “criticism” of our American media, have long been irritated by the Washington Post’s declaration that Howard Kurtz’s disclosure of his CNN role (host of “Reliable Sources” and media critic) satisfies WaPo readers that he has no conflict between his CNN role and his WaPo role, even when writing about CNN. Moved up the Versailles foodchain to Washington Bureau Chief (of the Daily Beast, but still….) Howie will retain his CNN Sunday hosting role.
Invisible Republicans Don’t Want Voters to Know Their Plans |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday October 6, 2010 3:50 pm |
We’re seeing more and more discussion of the fact that Republican candidates nationwide have basically dropped off the map, relying on advertising and the national mood over retail campaigning and public appearances.
Bad News for Democrats: 12 Frosh Reps Endangered, Say New District Polls |

A new batch of Congressional polling is out about Democratic freshmen, and it is not good news for Democrats.
Ohio Attorney General Sues GMAC, Seeks $25,000 per False Affidavit |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday October 6, 2010 2:10 pm |
In addition to seeking penalties from GMAC in the lawsuit for their violations of state laws and perpretration of fraud, Cordray wants a “preliminary and permanent injunction” against all foreclosures by GMAC in any pending case. If he were to file future lawsuits – and I believe he will – he would move to do the same in those cases. That would effectively end all foreclosure proceedings in Ohio, a judicial foreclosure state.
Obama’s Oil Spill Commission Says WH Intentionally Downplayed Size of BP Disaster |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday October 6, 2010 1:20 pm |
The Oil Spill Commission’s Twitter feed actually approvingly tweeted out stories about this report, so they want it to be well-known that the government screwed up.
Key Prosecution Witness Excluded over Torture in New York Terror Trial |
| By: bmaz Wednesday October 6, 2010 12:30 pm |
This is a critical ruling and, while it should not be this way, a refreshingly positive one for the health and sanctity of the Constitution and federal Article III courts.
As California Goes: Potential for Statewide Moratorium on Foreclosures Could Effectively End Them |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday October 6, 2010 11:44 am |
I think we’re close to politicians calling for a nationwide foreclosure moratorium, including in non-judicial foreclosure states. The AFL-CIO is already there. One analyst told WaPo “Right now, there’s no question we’re headed into a moratorium period.”
The tipping point could be California, the largest state in the union but also one where a judicial sign-off is not required for foreclosures.
