Obama Lifts Moratorium on Offshore Drilling, Pissing Off Everyone

By: Blue Texan Wednesday October 13, 2010 10:30 am

I think the headline of this piece, “Greens Scoff at Drilling Plan, GOP Shrugs,” really says so much about the Obama administration.

As Petraeus Perpetuates Afghanistan Training Myth, Kandahar Casualties Double

By: Jim White Wednesday October 13, 2010 9:30 am

The New York Times has a fresh story on the training of Afghan security forces, and despite making claims of training progress in the headline, the story documents, yet again, that US efforts to shape a Western security force in Afghanistan are failing.

Nineteen Dem Senators: Don’t Appeal DADT Ruling

By: David Dayen Wednesday October 13, 2010 8:45 am

Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Mark Udall (D-CO) have assembled a coalition of 19 Senators to urge Attorney General Eric Holder not to appeal the worldwide injunction on enforcing the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy. Impressively, the group includes moderate Tim Johnson and conservative Mary Landrieu.

Foreclosure Crisis May Well Be Catastrophic in Any Case

By: emptywheel Wednesday October 13, 2010 8:01 am

The question is, which impending catastrophe is going to be least bad for the American people? And which catastrophe best preserves the rule of law and property — the bedrocks of our country? Do we enter this catastrophe on the banksters’ terms, or on more equalized terms?

DADT Order May Not Be Longterm Victory; Injunctive Overreach Will Likely Provoke Appeal

By: bmaz Wednesday October 13, 2010 7:00 am

By wildly overreaching her injunctive authority, Judge Virginia Phillips has given the Obama White House/Executive Branch legitimate and compelling grounds to appeal that are separate from the critical merits issue of the constitutionality and propriety of DADT, which is a discriminatory and loathsome policy and should be terminated immediately.

Just Say Now’s Big GOTV Effort for Marijuana

By: Michael Whitney Wednesday October 13, 2010 6:01 am

Just Say Now is rolling out a huge Get Out The Vote effort that will contact tens of thousands of voters between now and Election Day. To pull it off, we need to raise $40,000 over the next week. I recorded a video to tell you about our plans to pass marijuana reform in 4 states in November. Check out the video, and then chip in $25 to help us Get Out the Vote for marijuana.

A very rough balancing out of American History.

By: Attaturk Wednesday October 13, 2010 1:30 am

It may not be the best way, but not appealing the decision on DADT is just a just way to overturn a wrong-headed discriminatory policy.

Late Night: Homophobes Use Print Media to Blame the Victims in Gay Teen Suicides

By: Phoenix Woman Tuesday October 12, 2010 8:00 pm

The fact that remarkably similar “blame the victims” pieces have appeared in two separate publications, one with a national focus and reach, within a week of each other, makes me wonder if there isn’t a coordinated sub rosa push by homophobic groups to use this version of “blame the victims” as their standard defense when called to account for making these gay kids’ lives so miserable that they felt taking their own lives was the only option left them.
