Thousands and Thousands of Sane People |

Just wow. I had a tremendous time today at the Rally to Restore Sanity. The crowd was huge and entirely friendly. There were lots of creative signs, but people were very polite and lowered their signs when asked once the rally started. I did smell a little weed in the air now and then and saw a few folks sitting on top of traffic signals. The musical guests were tremendous. By inviting Muslims Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Yusuf (formerly Cat Stevens) to take part in the rally, Stewart did a nice job of putting faces to Muslims as opposed to fanning the flames of hatred by stating all Muslims are terrorists.
FDL Book Salon Welcomes Steven Rattner, Overhaul: An Insider’s Account of the Obama Administration’s Emergency Rescue of the Auto Industry |

I come to Steven Rattner’s Overhaul: An Insider’s Account of the Obama Administration’s Emergency Rescue of the Auto Industry from a very particular perspective. As a Michigander whose husband still works in the auto industry and whose town has benefited from battery subsidies, I’m a grateful direct beneficiary of the work the Obama Administration did to save the auto industry. But that also means I read this book, which might have been subtitled, “Wall Street gapes at Detroit” from the perspective, “Detroit gapes back at Wall Street.”
WA Sen: Murray-Rossi Race Remains Tight to the End |

With the race so close, it could easily come down to a few thousand votes. This means it might be a very long time before we know the winner, and, possibly, even which party holds the majority in the Senate. In Washington State, the ballot needs to only be postmarked by election day, so votes will be coming in for days after the election.

The last week of the Senate race in Alaska has been pretty chaotic. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is reportedly going up with last-minute ads, sensing an opportunity. It’s going to be a wild finish.
Downticket Races May Save Your House, Health, and Community |
| By: Peterr Saturday October 30, 2010 9:00 am |
There’s nothing that the people running campaigns in downticket races fear more than a tidal wave at the top of the ticket. Some voters will be discouraged at being swept away by the wave, and won’t come to the polls. Other voters, excited to be part of the wave, will come and vote in that big race and maybe a couple more, but then leave the booth and neglect the other races entirely.
That’s a shame, because when times are tough and DC is in gridlock, those downticket races may be the very ones that save your house, your health, and your community.
