Or, you know, perhaps we don’t. But it has been predicted we will! So says the Serious Conservative Thinker Andrew Ferguson, who proves that he’s not crazy and thus that there even exist such specimens as “Serious Conservative Thinkers” because he has the Guts to Admit that there are also a whole lot of Lunatic [...]
Leading Title Insurer Wants Banks to Insure Its Title Insurance |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday October 20, 2010 7:10 pm |
The big fear from the title insurance market is that they would issue insurance to a borrower on a recently foreclosed property whose previous owner was improperly evicted from the home. The round of lawsuits end with the previous owner being given back the home. This triggers the title insurance taken out by the new borrower. If done on a mass scale, the title insurer could go bankrupt.
Despite Once-Secret Deals with Obama, Hospital Association Turns Against Democrats |
| By: Jon Walker Wednesday October 20, 2010 6:20 pm |
During the 2009 push for health care reform, in scenes that conspiracy theorists usually have to imagine, the hospital industry sat down with White House officials and agreed to support the administration’s effort in exchange for Obama promising to protect their profits, which included a commitment to kill the public option. Yet, like any good mercenaries, the hospital association didn’t stay loyal for long. Their sweetheart deal is now law, and the political tide has turned. And so, the American Hospital Association PAC is now spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to help elect Republicans this November.
The Psychiatric Demonization of Omar Khadr |
| By: Jeff Kaye Wednesday October 20, 2010 5:30 pm |
Forensic psychiatrist Michael Welner is interviewed by a Candian newspaper and engages in character assassination in order to make Omar Khadr look like an unrepentant evil terrorist, comparable to Osama bin Laden. Dr. Welner bases this on an evaluation of Mr. Khadr in custody at Guantanamo. The timing of the interview is suspect, as negotiations over a possible plea bargain for the former child “soldier” are ongoing.

For millions of medical marijuana patients across the country, this is the scary, unfortunate reality. But there is hope: in Oregon, voters are about to take up Measure 74, a ballot measure to provide safe, regulated access to medical marijuana for patients in the state. Just Say Now is working with the Measure 74 campaign to let voters know how badly patients need this measure.
President Has Options to End “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” Despite Appeals |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday October 20, 2010 2:15 pm |
The President has a lot of options here, and they do not merely reflect picking and choosing what laws to implement and what to ignore (which makes me personally uncomfortable). The appeal is discretionary, a stop-loss order is available and in general the DADT ban doesn’t have to be stayed as a matter of Constitutional precedent.
