The GOP’s sustained effort to accuse those who mobilize Democratic constituencies — as Wellstone did better than anyone — of vote fraud is designed not just to delegitimize both big-D and small-D democracy, but also to elicit this kind of tribalistic hatred.

FDL’s Hot House 100: (10/25 Update) Now Two More Congressional Races to Watch |
| By: Jon Walker Monday October 25, 2010 1:30 pm |
I’m adding two seats, KY-06 and NE-01, to the FDL Election Hot House list (making it the Hot House 100!) because recent public polling has shown both races within five points. I’m also updating four other House seats–HI-01, MA-04, MA-10 and MI-01–to reflect new public polling information.
Foreclosure Fraud Represents Banks Trying to Evade Eating Toxic Mortgages |
| By: David Dayen Monday October 25, 2010 12:45 pm |
Homeowners want to save their homes. Loan servicers want to maximize profits. Investors want to put back the soured mortgage-backed securities on the banks. The banks want to fight that. Title insurers don’t want to take losses on properties with blighted titles. Fannie and Freddie are acting like investors on one side and like partners with the banks on the other. There are all sorts of competing incentives.

| By: Michael Whitney Monday October 25, 2010 11:45 am |
With just 8 days til Election Day and a neck-and-neck race for Prop 19, every minute counts to get out the vote for legalizing marijuana in California. So he denies holding a woman hostage and forcing her to smoke a bowl — but remembers “taking” people and making them listen to garbage like this?
New Emphasis for Catfood Commission Shifts Away from Entitlements? Toward Dual Reports? |
| By: David Dayen Monday October 25, 2010 9:36 am |
The Deficit Comission is not expected to mention the biggest driver of the deficit in recent years and (along with Medicare and Medicaid) in the future, the Bush tax cuts. That shows how unserious a deficit commission it really is. But apparently, the efforts in progressive circles have at least temporarily beaten back the drive to cut retirement benefits.
Foreclosure Fraud Isn’t Mere Paperwork |
| By: masaccio Monday October 25, 2010 8:30 am |
Foreclosure fraud is just the tip of the problems facing securitizers. Real Estate Backed Mortgage Securities are governed by a contract that imposes a wide array of rights and duties on each participant in the process. The process of working out the implications of those rights and duties will take a long time and a lot of judicial resources.
Wikileaks Documents Complicate Selection of Iraqi Prime Minister |
| By: David Dayen Monday October 25, 2010 7:45 am |
The US may not be so upset that Wikileaks released its Iraq war logs late last week. For one, the logs mainly implicate the previous Administration in various crimes and atrocities. More important to this White House, the revelations contained in the documents may make it impossible for Nouri al-Maliki to run the government.
Khadr Enters Guilty Plea; Will Spend Another Year at Guantanamo, Seven More in Canada |
| By: emptywheel Monday October 25, 2010 7:02 am |
As you may have heard on Twitter, Omar Khadr has plead guilty to all charges against him. Omar Khadr, the only Canadian, only child soldier and only Guantanamo Bay detainee charged with battlefield homicide in the killing a U.S. soldier, pleaded guilty to all terrorism and murder charges on Monday. “Yes” said Mr. Khadr, when [...]
America’s Worst Columnist? |
| By: Jim White Monday October 25, 2010 6:06 am |
I know, choosing America’s worst columnist when there are so many recipients of wingnut welfare putting their income to work hammering out ridiculous screeds in support of politicians who wish to return our country to the stone age, but when George Will decided to hand out the title of America’s Worst Politician to Alan Grayson, well he really seemed to be angling for the prize.
