Good evening, everybody! This is Phoenix and I’m your Late Nite hostess for tonight. The subject of the post is: Hurt.
First off, here’s a video of Trent Reznor’s performing the song he wrote called “Hurt”:
Nine Inch Nails – “Hurt”
Next off, here’s Johnny Cash’s version of that same song:
Johnny Cash – Hurt from kakofoni on Vimeo. . . .
And here’s Christy Moore singing it during a sound check:
Christy Moore — “Hurt”
Oh, what the hell — Here’s Mississippi John Hurt, but he’s not singing “Hurt”, he’s singing “Louis Collins”:
Mississippi John Hurt – “Louis Collins”
With that, I hope none of you are hurting tonight.

About Firedoglake
Hello and good evening, everyone! How are things with you all tonight?
pw!
Hello PW
What a nice selection.
Howdy!
Wow, the Rangers are getting their asses kicked. Again.
tis a wonderful thing to see pw — i’m sure enjoying tonight’s game
Good evening Phoenix Woman and FDL peeps.
I finally got a live GOTV phone call today – from the Republicans.
My direct mail count is something over 60 pieces now, all from Republicans.
My robo call count is over 20 – all Republicans, except for one single robo call from the DNC. After I had already voted.
The Democrats seem to think that GOTV will save them. I’m a little sceptical.
Thanks. Poor Trent Reznor, he had no idea he was writing what would turn out to be one of the five best Johnny Cash songs ever.
The Giants won the pennant! The Giants won the pennant! The Giants won the pennant!
Howdy folx.
Weird — I haven’t got a single GOP lit drop, and maybe one robocall, but I’ve got tons of Dem lit. Then again, I live in the most Democratic part of the whole state.
LOL!
Last night, on the AP Radio wire report, at 6 PM PDT, they reported:
That made me say, “Huh?”
PW! Konban wa. Hey pups.
In game 2?
Its just not the same telling a recorded Ron Johnson to f*#k off, I voting for Russ.
<こんばんわ
I live in a conservative corner of a fairly conservative (R+4) district. Still, we have a blue dog (Salazar), and I’ve contacted his office before, he has my address.
Nothing. It’s like the Democrats vanished into a hole of shame.
About a third of the direct mail, and several of the calls, are from American Crossroads. Two robo calls were from the RNC, which is supposed to be hurting for money. One robo call was for Senate in another state.
grayson commercial on now
Well, they won the pennant or else they wouldn’t be playing tonight. I was just doing a bad riff on Bobby Thomson’s 1951 Shot Heard ‘Round The World.
Uh, yeah. About konji….
Tim McCarver is a douche. I didn’t like him when he played.
Hi PW!
If there was a guy I’d like to meet, it’s be Trent Rez. And just a wee technical word about that Trent song.
That bizarre sounding note you hear in the chords in the beginning, then returning in the song is called a “Diminished Fifth.” It’s a kind of “tone painting” to make it more bizarre and sad sounding.
A “fifth” is a necessary and root component of a chord, and to “diminish” it is a statement; a total statement. The fundamental components are “hurt” by “diminishment.” It’s a most excellent use of tone painting.
I wish I could vote for Russ. But I’ll be voting for Mark Dayton.
No. Wait. That was Gary Carter. McCarver’s still a douche.
Hi PW and puppers,
OK, trying a different wireless broadband tonight and I can actually listen to the music vids. Got an iffy signal, but…
Oh, indeed. He’s familiar with Schoenberg, isn’t he?
I like McCarver.
*ducks*
Really, *ducks*
The Blue
DoucheDog “Democrats” are set to bear the brunt of the losses. But will the surviving Dems take the right lesson? History would indicate otherwise. Even now every Republican in Congress or aspiring for Congress is saying “No Compromise!” while all the Democrats are talking about how bipartisany things will be. I could barely hold down my meal. The corporate media is always going to push that narrative.
Heh – yep! Uses all twelve of those damn tones.
And the sweetness that becomes apparent when the lyrics become really honest? That’s songwriting craft – bigtime.
Come across the line and try it.
Got the lowdown on polling observers in my county. If someone questions my right to register and vote at the polling place, they need to prove it right then and there to stop me.
And the Giants make it official. 9-0. Wow.
Truly
zactly
Solid PW, solid as a rock.
I like this stripped-down version so much better than the bombastic ones he did. He wasn’t trusting the song the way I thought he should (and ironically, the way Johnny Cash does).
i want them b/c TX beat the Yankees. so it’s sorta like the enemy (SF Giants) of my enemy (TX) is my friend. And if I see Nolan Ryna one more time I shall puke.
Are we looking at a sweep?
Nope. We’ve run this experiment, and we know how it turns out.
i hope so but i’m not that lucky
Music is hardly different from politics.
An honest, simple yet fully committed performance is way better than an overly produced and dumbed-down/glossy performance to sell records.
That’s why my next sentence was “history would indicate otherwise”.
I’m hoping it’s a good omen for California — Brown and Boxer.
Which is why I always hated disco.
We’ll know in two games, that’s for sure. ;-)
I used to be a Dodger fan. Then I became a Royals fan. Then Rupert
f***tardMurdoch bought the Dodgers.So I became a Giants fan.
Brown’s got it in the bag. Whitman’s implosion will be second only to Joe Miller’s.
It’s a strange irony that the definitive versions of so many songs are sung by someone other than the writer.
But I also love the version of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song done by Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer, which makes me question the whole concept of definitive versions.
Johnny Cash has that sort of effect on a lot of people.
I’ve always been an Astros fan. Therefore I Must. Hate. Rangers.
Yup. If I want to trance out on the dance floor, put on some technorganic stuff such as was big in early ’90s London.
Hater. :)
Look, I was talking about MUSIC! Entertainment is an entirely different story – the breadier and circusier the better!
That is Dodger fan sacrilege.
I’ll bet you can’t go farther south than Pasadena without catching Hell.
first pro game i attended was giants.. back in 66 or 67 — they’ve had a spot near and dear to my heart ever since. helped that i lived in the bay area from 65 to 08.
Good point. LOUD rhythm doesn’t = music.
Whitman wants her housekeeper deported. Yeah, right…after Whitman goes to jail for the hire.
And burning question, when are the feds going to put the hurt on Halliburton? The most evil corp ever.
Proud of yourself, Chee-knee? SCOTUS?
Johnny was an amazing cat. He never held back, and he would often put out some really horrendous stuff. But, because he didn’t hold back, about every twentieth song or so — cover or original — he’d create a masterpiece for all time. His version of “Hurt”, especially with the Mark Romanek video (Romanek heard the song and begged Rick Rubin for the chance to do the video, even offering to do it for free), is about as wrenchingly brilliant an epitaph, for both him and June, as can be imagined.
Ah. This is like Mets-Yankees hatred, I take it?
I wouldn’t'a done it if they hadn’t sold the team to RF’ingM.
I become a Dodger fan when they were giving tickets to HS honors students (CSF, for y’all Californians) and I got to see games just for getting good grades (I’d get anyway).
RF’ingM threw that good will all away.
I have a very special reason to detest disco. Back in the late 70s, there was a radio station in Houstopolis, Y94 that played album rock. Album sides sometimes in fact. Then one day, without warning, it’s format changed to Disco94. I called and asked why and the nice lady who answered the phone said that the poll they conducted in New York City….at which point I stopped her and asked if they had taken a poll in New York and applied it to Houston, Texas. She confirmed that and I predicted the station would fail within a year and of course it did. When I left for the Navy, it was playing some kind of Yugoslavian programming. Now I understand it’s playing classic rock. Hope they didn’t sell all their records and have to buy new.
Must be, yep. All I know is that it’s apparently against the law in this state to like both teams at the same time.
You mean the Halliburton that relocated to Dubai to escape US jurisdiction?
My days of Dodger-hating go back to before Cey-Garvey-Lopes-Russell. Especially Garvey.
I was born into it.
LMAO! Hang on, let me check the weather forecast for Hell…
It’s undoubtedly a ClearChannel station now playing tapes made in Timbuktoo or some similarly relevant place.
Video didn’t kill radio: ClearChannel did.
Here, here. ooh. ooh. call on me! Yankee fan. hates Mets. Subway series was great.
There is a hilarious video of Arnold and Meg. Arnold saying the exact same things Meg is saying. It’s great.
Of course who is the big winner in all these billionaire campaigns? TV.
And people who make commercials for special interests.
I knew I should have gotten into that business. I really am stupid.
Follow the money my accountant said! Get out of politics my mom said.
Quit while you are ahead my brother said.
But the advice I like best comes from Murry my shoemaker.
“What good is it if someone gains the whole world yet loses his sole?”
That was the Dodger team I loved… except for Garvey. He thought his excrement was perfume.
Oops. That was supposed to be a reply to #55.
I am amused at the facts that the SF Giants stadium in SOCIALIST COMMIE LIB San Francisco is the only privately built MLB stadium in the last 4 decades, while the TX Rangers relied on a Pub/Priv partnership – taken advantage of mostly in the Bush years.
Says a lot….
Yankees-Mets?
A pale, pale, shadow of Dodgers-Yankees in the Brooklyn Daze.
Clear Channel is evil, yep.
20 runs in 2 games. Sheesh, the Rangers look like the Rays. No pitching, no stick. Bein’ a dyed in the wool Dodger fan I gotta root for the Rangers but geez louise. If the Yankees had won the pennant I’d really be in a quandary. Is it April yet?
And the Stadium Authority left the city of Arlington with the bill the Courts sent when the Mathes family sued over their exercising eminent domain.
See Molly’s Shrub for the dirt.
Yeah. The (ex) wife too.
What it says to me is that these assclowns don’t know the difference between socialism and peanut butter.
All that flack LaSorda took in Candlestick – that was purely for sport – the man we loved to hate.
He got a helluva kick out of it when he went to the mound. The booing was merciless, but out of grudging respect.
Those were epic days.
You know Eric Boehlert did a brilliant series on Clear Channel way back in like 1995 or something. Just stunning work. It was I first found out about him and became a huge fan. The stuff that he bring out in that series of articles for Salon made me understand just how messed up The radio industry is and that they were vulnerable to pressure.
And even though it seems crazy, I think that Fox News and NewsCorp is also vulnerable. After reading the Harpers story on Murdock and NewsCorp I’m more confident than ever that they are cooking their books and probably lying on on there issues. Sure they will probably get some Republics to do their dirty work and cover for them, but Murdock is sloppy and the media don’t want to take him on. But they would LOVE a story about how they lied on their books and had to pay fines.
Arts are COMMIE! Sports are ‘Merkan!
The first pro baseball this Iowa farm boy also involved the Giants, against the Cubs, in 1958.
I remember the good times I had reading Steve Gilliard, who was a Mets fan to the day he died, intoning “Fuck the fucking Yankees”. I kept envisioning it as sung to the Hallelujah Chorus:
Fuuuck the Yankees!
Fuuuck the Yankees!
Fuck the Yankees, fuck the Yankees, fuck the Yankees, ohhhh yeah!
And it is a beautiful stadium. I was there most recently for FREE. Opera in the park! Culture on the Jumbo-tron.
That is interesting. Hmmm. Tonight, here in the City Beautiful was the first game in the new arena which Rich DeVos was so kind enough to contribute to building. The new performing arts center, as a result of all the public money dumped into the arena was downgraded. at least the plans were. we really don’t know b/c the whole project is on hold. that arena is a monstrosity. Very interesting about ‘frisco.
Was that sung to the tune of
Kill the wabbit
Kill the wabbit
Kill the wabbit…?
Yeah. I keep getting the whiff of Enron about them — they put on this invincible front, but, seemingly like the Who sang, it’s a put-on.
Sports are a pubic-hair wig?
Works for me.
at least the Giants are pitching to hamilton. Girardi being such a wuss was an embarrasment to all Yankees fans and to the pinstripes.
It could be, but I was thinking of Handel’s Messiah, actually. ;-)
Heh – forgot about that double entendre on the ‘Merkan thing – LOL!
That fits too. But Kill the Wabbit is funnier.
well, i taped TDS. watching the ball game on TNT and my man, Hedo ain’t exactly lighting it up, so i’m gonna run and watch TDS. maybe be back. if not, be good.
The first pro game this Iowa farm boy saw also involved the Giants, against the Cubs in 1958.
You’ve made my night.
Well, this ‘Merkun is going to bed. Much as I hate to leave good company, I’m fading fast. Oya koinu.
Never been a big fan of the intentional walk. Usually comes back to bite ya in the ass. Wouldn’t mind a little novelty, though, have one of these guys throw a screwball.
g’nite margaret
Nighty night friend – yer in me thoughts every day.
And here it is backwards, in Italian.
Namaste
Me too, Way past my bedtime.
And I must hit the showers, then the hay.
Be excellent to each other, especially to Suz!
g’nite sd and pw
And I think I’m going to head for the locker room too. Good night ‘pups.
g’nite bct
Nite All! Hey Suzanne!
Well, it’s backwards in the titles, but not in Italian – and It’s FUCKING HILARIOUS! HAHAH!
Bugs addresses Fudd as “Il Gran Cacciatore” the Great Hunter! LOL! I’m dying here….
hey ce
“Bunhilda” instead of Brunhilde! Priceless!
funny bug — when I preview there is a date above the post (I tried it twice) of September 10, 2007. It clearly does not appear after the profile, but weird. And right now, too, just above Replying to Suzanne @105 (also 10:32 am)
it’s still early on the LEFT coast! Your time 3:00 pm is wakeup call.
the tech crew is still going through the list of bugs and features that need tweaking….
i’ll be glad when all the bugs are worked out :) esp when we get edit back
without edit you know what they really think!
Super! I meant, preview, not profile. You guys are so wonderful.
Late but never LOST!
Go GIANTS!!
and just how bad of a typist i can be when i get tired…. my typo to word ratio gets way way up there
OMG – I have to translate and add subtitles to that PW link for the BugsBunny opera.
It’s original language, in Italian, spoofing a German opera, and just hilarious! Totally has “kill the wabbit” in it “mata’l coniglio” and more! LOL!
Nah just how bad they spell at times, oh and just go with the flow to say what they are trying to say…. But I MISS EDIT ……sigh.. she was a friend of mine.
be sure to share the link when ya do dood
It’s that way for me when I wakeup.
edit will return… backstage is leaning hard on the tech crew to get it back.
Suz, CE, Kelly,
Sent a note to the ether a few minutes ago and this broadband I is testing puked it to somewhere.
Don’t watch baseball, enjoyed playing, though, two years varsity first base, no errors, 390 hitting avg. great sport. Can’t abide the few people who start spouting game statistics for the entire history of the game at the drop of a pop-up. Lefty, get the throw anywhere near me and I got my glove on it.
My dad took me to a Milwaukee Braves game when I was a real pup. Shook hands with Warren Spahn. He did a lot for building my self-esteem as another lefty. Could bring up his name if I ever got teased about anything regarding my handedness. Hope you are all well tonight.
Chocolate ice cream with pecans??
hey nonq — wow, how cool that he did that for ya.
Kisses, left and right.
lurk is leaning on em too…. the mod squad can be a force to be reckoned with — as the tech crew will find out if we don’t get edit back pdq
It was and its funny what things sometimes come to one’s head about childhood.
Nice to get a page refresh in 5 seconds instead of two minutes.
Oh and Johnny Cash is the only video link that is showing up here, of the four at the top. Loved and always loved that guy and his music.
even with a hard refresh? try clearing your cache and see if that helps load the other videos
imho, the cash is the best of them
I wonder if this put’s a bee in OBummer’s Bonnet…
AP sources: Most US troops, families say gays OK
That did it, thanks. Logged me out upon refresh.
Hope you have a lively crowd tonight.
Going to test a couple more downloads with this wireless unit and hit the horizontal mode shortly. I’m only doing about 400 times faster than dial-up but I’ve got to weigh the costs in that I might find it harder to get away from this internets thing and pay attention to anything else.
Have always skipped a lot of content that I might have liked to visit because of the slow connect.
Peace and Love
Corporate owned (D)’s going down to defeat doesn’t hurt, they are simply reaping their just desserts.
Check out Black Agenda Report and see if they are expressing ‘hurt’. Ha! Not. especially the comments, they are gloating.
My computer was hurt for two days. Ate a bad software update. Didn’t feel like running browsers.
g’nite nq — have fun playing with it
ouch!
How did Dubya look while Texas was getting drubbed? Hurt? :-D
Too bad the Rangers couldn’t play at the Cowboys new stadium. More Texans could be watching the Rangers getting clobbered. 8-D
ok. gonna get in bed an’ watch the end of this ball game. prolly fall asleeep before it’s over which ainb’t a bad thing. night all.
g’nite bfl
Trying to calculate how fast I would go through the 50gig monthly limit and stay in a less expensive plan. Downloaded a couple 10 minute interviews, Dr Rikki Ott, to get a reading on how large those files are.
With the teen wanting every movie trailer, music vids, etc, just checking it out.
I wasn’t sure if you was implying something else earlier. LOL
only implication was a hearty wish that you enjoy the faster connection :)
late late night is upstairs
Excellent!
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. So many good renditions of it.
