No, really. As far as stirring calls to arms go, you have on the one hand stirring perorations like, oh:
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.
And if that doesn’t make you want to pound the snot out of a medieval Frenchman, you have no poetry in your soul.
But then on the other hand you have Obama on the Daily Show tonight, where apparently this will be the battle-cry:
The president, who faces a possible GOP takeover of the House in less than a week, told a sometimes critical Jon Stewart and frustrated Democrats that he is still in the process of delivering on his campaign pledges, and his supporters should be patient.
Well, OK then…
Myself, I don’t dislike Obama. Why, the fellow seems quite personable! But that doesn’t matter.
A plea for patience is, from a very basic electoral-politics perspective, I believe the technical term is, Teh Suck.
I think the appeal of the Stewart “Restore Sanity” rally is belied by its apparent easy-goingness. Look, here are some eminently “sane” positions that have proven “extreme” even in a Democratically controlled Washington:
— The “Stimulus” was too small
–Money to Wall Street should come with strings attached so we’re not fucked over again
–Climate change is real
–Gays can serve in the military
–Judges should have more power in personal bankruptcies
–Canada and England are not fascist states because of their healthcare programs
–Sometimes you should build tunnels from New Jersey to Manhattan, you know, to help people escape
Anyhow I have no patience. On climate change alone, why should I?
Let’s all watch Obama on The Daily Show together, though. Your thoughts?
