Meet the biggest sugar daddies of wingnut welfare.
The Kochs have lavished money on more than 30 other advocacy groups, including the Heritage Foundation, the Manhattan Institute, the George C Marshall Institute, the Reason Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute. These bodies have been instrumental in turning politicians away from environmental laws, social spending, taxing the rich and distributing wealth. [...]
Most of these bodies call themselves “free-market thinktanks”, but their trick – as (Astro)Turf Wars points out – is to conflate crony capitalism with free enterprise, and free enterprise with personal liberty. Between them they have constructed the philosophy that informs the Tea Party movement: its members mobilise for freedom, unaware that the freedom they demand is freedom for corporations to trample them into the dirt.
It is impressive that they’ve convinced Joe Bob Teabagger that impeding their ability to poison the air his children breathes will somehow lead to the bible being banned.

About Firedoglake
Assange will be guest on democracynow.
Thanks BT.
Was bemoaning the lack of honest reporting downstairs.
Yes you were, and then we come here and gag some more. It’s maddening. And, yes, when we have a problem with the Supreme Court, where DO we go to get justice? I got a little nose thumbing to do myself.
Those poor small business owners. Let me get out my violin.
Good morning, BT and earlybird pups (Demi, isn’t it still oh-dark-thirty on the Left Coast?)
Sitting here with my tea listening to the wind howl outside. It’s warm (70) for mid-October and a big storm is coming through soon, I guess. I’m headed to Indy a bit later.
Anyone watch the George Tiller documentary last night?
Mornin’, BT, pups
Seems the myth about lemmings going over the cliff by the thousands was based on followers of scumbags like the Kochs.
Wish they’d fix the edit function. Grumble…
The current court is the most painfull part of our reality for me. To have anti-Constitution idiots like Scalia and Thomas jockying the Bench is borderline criminal. And there is no relief. No recourse. We are being destroyed, willingly, knowingly, with malice from within.
Early to bed, early to rise.
I only caught the last portion of it. Stunning.
Almost enough to make me miss the old white Warren court. Strange.
I meant old, white male Warren court.
sucks!
OT: Morning Joe crew is talking up Rand Paul as the reasonable one between the two candidates running in Kentucky for the US Senate. Seriously.
Comcast has begun the cutover to digital by scrambling some of the channels, requiring a special box and an additional fee. What little teevee I watch has been free because Comcast never shut off the cable service from the previous owners. Since I pretty much only watch Rachel and KO, and I can watch them online, I’m gonna just let it gradually go away as more channels are scrambled. For now, I can get some channels, including local ones in case I need to follow something locally.
You can watch the entire Tiller documentary online this morning (as of about 11 p.m. EDT last night).
Last line in BT’s Guardian article.
So said Alice.
Anger, fear and conservatism are all expressions of insecurity. Unfortunately there will always be cowards that are easily manipulated into voting against their own self interests.
I’m a (retired) techie and I understand that there will be bugs and glitches, so I am trying to be patient. I’m with demi and others — do NOT like nested comments. It would be great if they’d make it optional, but that adds to the difficulty.
Thank you. Will find it later, after breakfast. I’ve been following the story and it just makes me as sad as the Supreme Court does. Just about the only good news is how far ahead of Whitman Jerry Brown is. (sigh)
This should get Randian Paul a few more votes, no?
Woman stomped outside Kentucky debate
OT – Jon Stewart interviews Austan Goolsbee on the Daily Show from Monday w/extended interview. Not very exciting, but whatever..
http://www.thedailyshow.com/
The President really doesn’t understand how to message, it will interesting to see how big of a failure his appearance on the Daily Show this Wednesday will be.
I saw that last night. I still can’t get any information on arrests and the local PD refuses to answer questions about it. I guess IOKIYA’bagger.
Lose the nested comments and give the edit function more than 0.5 nanoseconds.
Caught a few minutes of their schtick this morning on my wat out the door. Just barely made it back to the bathroom before the heaving started. MoJo is a maggot infested oozing sore on what passes for political discourse. (sorry for being so graphic before breakfast)
…with liberty and justice for all corporations and everyone making more than $32 million a year.
IOKIYAMFMTB (motherfuckin’moron)
Yep and the truly ugly thing is that there are firm grounds to impeach Roberts, Thomas and Scalia but nobody’s even discussing that. I’d be willing to bet that Alito is worthy of impeachment too if anybody dug just a little.
I had to flip off that one when Stewart said the unemployment rate was 10% and Ghoulsbee retorted: 9.6%.
Regarding the new friends page here. I don’t see a way to send a message to any of my “friends”. Does anyone know if that’s in the works and if not how is that gimmick considered networking? I’m unclear.
Well….that too. Sorta synonymous with ‘bagger. Both the paint huffing kind and the political kind. I’ll bet there’s some overlap there too.
The only income category showing a increases last year were those earning in excess of something like $50 million, some 72 households, whose incomes expanded by orders of magnitude. democracynow.
Amen. Let’s not talk about U6 or what the real unemployment numbers are. Let’s just talk about the made up small subsection we are willing to acknowledge.
Roses still blooming and pepper plants still producing in Michigan. Gotta love global climate change.
Hear, hear! I’m not a fan of nested comments. It makes my scrolling wheel sad.
Baby steps. I think PW said it is forthcoming.
Hey, what’s .4 between rich friends. And, it’s higher here in California, where nobody wants to pay taxes for services. Harumph.
Morning BT, Firepups:
Speaking of crazy people, Sal Russo is shilling for the Tea Party Express this morning on WJ.
Bush is gone but his depraved revenge trip goes on…
Oh, thanks. I hadn’t read or heard that. Okay, that makes sense now.
Impeachment is not a fuction of malfeasance, it’s a function of political will. There was political will to impeach Clinton over cigar sex, but none to impeach those in your list for perjury before Congress, which is what I think you’re referring to.
Mornin’ All -
anyone have a clue as to how to post a video in diaries in the new format ?
Copy that.
The Paul campaign said it was “unfortunate”. “motherfuckin’moron” says it pretty well. Two men stomping a woman and it is mearly “unfortunate”. Rand Paul is an inhuman piece of shit.
Yes, It was disgusting to see how anti-abortion religious whack-jobs operate. True terrorist in every sense of the word. Take life in the name of a god or absolutist rational is the thought process employed by (?). I do not like abortion, however, who am I to impose my religion, or faith on another, via the force of law. Minds blinded by flawed absolutism, which are not so absolute, but should be obsolete!
9.6% is the polite way of saying 20% +…
Look at my msg at FB.
I’m hip. I did graduate high school you know and I can actually manage on my own without somebody to steer me through the complexities of our modern world.
Yes, please.
Guardian has a good editorial on Wikileaks and the Iraq War. A comparison I’ve made a couple of times is between the US and Iraqi citizens and Nazi Germany and Ukrainian citizens. The Nazis were much worse, of course, as they fully intended upon genocide of the Slavic peoples, der Fuhrer wanted to turn Moscow into a lake and to “help” the Ukrainians with their “Jewish problem,” but the descriptions of how Iraqis were treated with the complicity of the US seems like the situation is more analogous than I gave it credit for.
Does Saddam Hussein resemble Joseph Stalin? Actually, he admired Stalin and based his army on Stalin’s, but the fact that he can’t return to oppress the Iraqi people again the way Stalin returned to rule over Ukraine again is certainly one point in the Iraqi people’s favor.
But the lesson I drew from reading about Operation Barbarossa as a youngster still applies. Just ’cause a new guy takes over, doesn’t mean he’ll be any better than the last guy. No one in Iraq was calling the Americans “Our Liberators” by 2005.
Dude, She’s an eco terrorist, been with Greenpeace, Embarrassed China by causing an International incident at the Olympics, that nogoognik Hippy deserved to git stomped! Why, I hope, they press charges against her! /s
They call themselves “libertarians” because they don’t have the courage to say what they really are, fascist goons.
I think you can just paste the youtube page url into the body of your diary and it’ll post the video.
NPR playing some of JFK’s space speech….there was hope and optimism. “Galvanized public opinion”….sigh….or cry. Good Morning..
Hmmmm. If I was good with techie graphics, like (hint, hint) CBL, I’d make a picture of a bunch of tea baggers with seeing eye dogs with doggie arm bands.
If you right click on the video itself, it will give you the option to copy the embed code, just paste it diary as Twolf said.
here is a husband confronting some of those whack jobs who accosted he and his wife as they made their way to a Brookline clinic:

Why has FDL adopted this format? To track comments and collect data on individuals? I need not a computer generated list of my posts or comments. I know what I post. Whatever the real motive for this new format, I do not like it. It reeks of “government.”
Ooops. Satellite to Assange just cut out on democracynow, just as he was describing the worst things he’d seen in the leaked docs.
thanks so much Southern Dragon and all :D
Sadly, Obama never developed a galvinizing vision that would capture the imagination of the U.S. public. His call for a move in the direction of a “green economy” was weak and not supported with strong policy initiatives. His grandest vision, more a fantasy, is “just getting along” with the Republicans. He’s the Rodney King of U.S. politics.
Thanks for that. Something like that sloshing in the back of my mind. google can do the same thing, under your screen name (at least it could last I tried it years ago), but still… FDL has a delete option associated with the list, and I am tempted to delete every comment I’ve every left.
Well that’s a relief. I was worried about the livelihoods of these a$$holes who confuse what’s best for the US economy with whatever will fill their own pockets and portfolios.
mere coincidence right!
He’s a very weak prez.
Uh-oh cHuckabee is upset with KKKarl. Whatever short term gains the ‘baggers might have is surely going to be eclipsed by the enormous rift in the Republican Party.
I have similar questions. I noticed there is a delete button and I’m thinking I should take the time once a day to delete all my comments on my page. It is creepy to be tracked in that way.
Who am I to get my exercise by leaping to conclusions. *g*
I recall a couple of months back hearing the executives of Evergreen Solar based in MA complain about the Obama administration doing nothing to back up the rhetoric. Under pressure from investors, Evergreen Solar had no choice but to open a factory in China this year.
Oh, my. I guess I owe you a coffee. Great paranoid minds and all. :)
There’s far too much of that kind of thing going on lately to be coincidental.
For sure, this is an affront to us! My spider instincts are on fire right now and they are never wrong. EVER!
But King was sincere and passionate…I loved that “call” from him.
Instinct….. it is a powerful human characteristic.
I don’t think it’s paranoia. I keep getting really good interviews, where I feel like I hit it out of the park and then, silence. No call backs, no emails, nothing. I’m convinced that it’s these ubiquitous and privacy invading search engines. This sort of thing never happened before when I was looking for a job.
I don’t usually bother to use a mouse with this laptop, although I have one. On a Mac you can scroll with two fingers on the trackpad, so it takes a bit more effort to keep scrolling back up to follow nested comments.
Good for him. Good to put a real face on those who are being yelled at and attacked. Boo for those women. Damn Boo, I say. If I say more, I might get censored. There’s a special place for those folks.
I guess I’d rather have a sad scrolling wheel than sad fingers.
Well, of course I used the term paranoid facetiously. I agree with you. And, I either have to spend time deleting, or I’m going to have to stop commenting.
They got Assange back on at the end of the program.
Do you mean the Tea Party or the way the Dems have responded to them?
Bingo!
Off to my cooking projects.
Everything outside is wet from overnight rain & morning fog & dew. Hopefully it will dry up later today so that I can start the bushhogging.
Be well.
Morning Pups,
Very high winds and heavy rains, school bus mechanical probs and drove my youngster to school.
NPR top of the hour had the story with a short audio from the woman. Yesterday WPR had guest Tim Graham, Director of media analysis, Media Research Center railing about MCR’s talking points of being a Soros funded and controlled ultra-left org that needed to be investigated by Congress for unfair treatment of Juan Williams and certainly consideration of removing Federal funding was in order.
Tru dat. The last thing anyone can say about Obama is he’s “sincere.”
I want to say something like say blow it off….meaning sometimes we can get alittle picky. So, don’t stop I say.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.

Bye…be careful out there. Sorry Ive been missing you.
alright awready – I can’t post the damn video @#&^!!#$^
it’s not a youtube, it’s an MSNBC video, just like Blue Texan’s above – aarrgghh !
RandPaul Shrugged
He likely figured that at least they did not kidnap her first and make her pray to AquaMan.
A special place for these folks? Sure is! They will be in good company when they trek straight to hell as did the brown-shirts, murderers, rapists and deceased pedophile priest.
Only a couple of keystrokes from from someones monitoring station.
Yet the retort is required?
LOL. I don’t like the nesting just because it makes it very difficult to follow a conversation. Keep telling myself I’m just old and cranky.
Perfect timing?
Yes. I was amused in a grim way by the style it took…like those prison things that come on MSNBC on Friday night after Rachel. It is a sad story with no apparent resolution. Somewhere around here I saved an article from The Atlantic about 15 yrs ago with a discussion of how to change the discussion to move forward…as I recall it was about minimizing unwanted pregnancy. But that misses the authoritarian point that control of women’s wombs is what it is about, not the babies. The fetuspeople are the front story. If it was actually about raising healthy babies to become healthy, educated, productive citizens we’d be talking about something else.
Found great video from BBC showing the CEO of Evergreen Solar discuss the failure of the Obama administration to provide incentives to ensure that green jobs would stay in the US and not watch them get shipped to China, which is what’s been happening. Great part starts around 2:40.
I figured Obama would at least make speeches, but really not much word/leadership from him.
Yep. :(
Jane H. Loose this crap! It’s Bogus!
BT has more tools than we do.
I thought so. However justifying it to you is not.
Unless you count to little to late:
- IS: boring
- SOTU: boring (except the CU barb at Roberts)
- SEP-2009 finally talks HCR, way to little, way to late
- 6 weeks before NOV-2010 elections he decides to take time off from planning Rhams glorious return to Chicago to do some campaigning
Wish I could help but I can’t even post pictures. I need to spend some time with the new toolbox but it;s still new and I spent yesterday looking for a job.
I went to an interesting symposium at Stanford with the Dalai Lama (!) with presentations of studies on the science of compassion and altruism. One of the most interesting things was how differently the brain lights up under fear and anxiety versus compassion and altruism. I have my notes and a fantasy that I will have time to write them up as a diary, but the take home message was how fostering fear changes people’s ability to respond to their environment and how as a society we have abandoned educating children about the common good and the benefits of supporting it.
Perhaps he was not trying to treat you like a person with less smarts, rather he though being explicit is helpful.
Anway, let me get out of the tit-for-tat and go back to lurking or whatever.
One nice thing about threads is that hello’s and tit-for-tat’s can all nest in a thread. Of course on the down side it destroy’s real-time / live-blogging.
And Krugman is devastating on the economy (too little too late):
Falling into the Chasm
If people in Kentucky still elect him after that demonstration of what they are about….
Margaret,
Again, FIREDOGLAKE beats up these guys all day long, (not that they don’t deserve it) but the bottom line is this: The rise of the extreme lunatic fringe rightwing in this country is soley due to the utter bankruptcy of the liberal class. The liberal class, traditionally being the check and balance on rightwing power, have let Americans down, sold them out, and as a consequence, allowed the rise of the Kock brothers and their idiot tea party useful idiots. Think about it people, when the Democrats won a stunning and crushing victory over the GOP with Barack Obama winning the election in 2008 and the Democrats ending up with 257 House seats and 60 Senate seats, who in the world would have thought that the GOP would be in a position to retake Congress just two years later? Wanna blame somebody for the mess of the resurgence of rightwing idiocy, blame the Democratic Party (most notably the battered wives and the abused husbands and wet noodle-men of the Democratic Party), and the bankrupt liberal class, not the Koch brothers……………
I’d love to see a diary on that! :)
Actually, commenting less might be good for me. My widdle feelings. Yesterday, someone suggested that I find some compassion. That, after I commentd that I did understand how people can survive being angry All The Time.
Yep, that’s me. No compassion. Oh, my head.
Watching the 99′ers on 60 minutes. And the people I know – it’s scary. But more than that its upsetting, these are hard working and often “well” educated people. Seems a shame to build up a socienty and social contract – then give all the money to a few people and call it a day – have the rich meet you in their new global HQ.
Well I didn’t mean to run you off but if you’ve been lurking for any length of time, you should be aware that ghost can be a bit more…abrasive…than he has to be to make his point.
Thanks for the video. President Bullchit has no real vision, just pleasant sounding rhetoric.
Demi! Thy name is unfeeling. /s
I have long though the strategy (or talk – if you parse the difference between talk & action as many do not) of splitting the baby in two… not so good.
King Solomon did it with talk to get the action he needs. Seems like AllBark Obama does it to provide the inaction he wants.
The local media’s downplaying this and trying to minimize it by claiming a Conway supporter stepped on the foot (in a cast) of a Paul supporter in what sounds like an accidental jostle (as opposed to what the Paul people did, which was to knock the MoveOn person to the ground, surround her and stomp on her whole body including her head).
Maybe I just need to order my new Super Stealth 500X suit.
Hmph! That’s because the goal has stopped being governing and started being winning against the other people at all costs. That encourages empty suits and discourages policy makers. Ever hear the beltway media lament people speaking “Senatese”? Well, the ones speaking that are the smart ones that make for effective government. People with the gift of rap usually don’t have the gift of effective leadership.
Whoa! The 500X is out? Cool!
Intention is paramount, and shame on the media for obscuring.
Now we know what to get each other for the holidays. :)
Come on over and we can have a Ginger Beer and catch up…lovely morning here in the 70s.
Thanks for the encouragement! I’ll try to find time. It really was good and there will be links.
Sounds good. It’s very windly again today and I don’t do well in the wind. Negative ions or something. I’m still waiting for at least a couple of nice autumn days. Please?
Are you in the path of the Land Cyclone, too? We’re looking at 50 mph winds today. We never get that unless it’s a really bad storm on Lake Superior.
Over 125 flights canceled at O’Hare already.
I’m north of Los Angeles, in Sylmar. We live in the foothills, below a huge canyon. We’re actually near one of the best hang gliding areas in the nation. The good thing is it’s the most smog free, clear air areas around here. It’s always something, though, isn’t it? Thank Goddess for Clariten.
It took the Kochs and their ilk many years to convince right-wingers that conservatism is piety. I think most of us here can see that the Republican party did not take over control of the religious vote overnight. One thing I didn’t understand for a long time, though, was how the rest of the country just sat back and watched it happen. Eventually I made the connection that the policy-makers in the Democratic Party are just as out-of-touch with reality as their Republican counterparts. Republicans may think they scored a big win when they successfully conflated conservatism, religion, and anarchic corporate capitalism; but it can only end in terror for all.
In other news, I fixed my Display Name, but have not seen if it displays the way I want, so this is a test of that. And I wonder if my little avatar pic of two pandas gettin’ busy will show up, or if that’s only for diaries?
As for the nested comments: At home where I use firefox, I get nested comments. At work where I use IE, I get linear comments. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and I haven’t decided yet which form I like better.
Ok. My Display Name displays quite displayingly. No little avatar picture tho, but that’s fine. In reality I’d prefer to use a pic of myself, but with my employer’s overzealous investigations of employees, and the fact that I live and work in extreme teabaggerland (not one county went to the Democrats in ’08…the only state in the US where this happened), I have to anonymize myself. &poutyface;
It’s somewhat useful that you point out who the corporate elite are, but what the American people really need to know is where the corporate elite live, where they sleep, where they park their cars, and where they dine and recreate. After all, they know all those things about the American people.
Great BBC video? Underscores reality. By failing to invest in green tech we are protecting the modern day slave owners, oil corporations and their way of realizing profit. Buy selling the American people bullshit instead of value! Like protecting the exploitation of slaves for profit?
If you click on your name the pandas display on your MyFDL page.
And now they’re saying gusts of up to 55 mph, with constant speeds of at least 29 to 37 mph. Currently it’s at 18 mph and climbing.
I watched part of the Dr. Tiller documentary that RM put together, and I agree that it seemed very much like all those other “prison reality” shows that MSNBC does. It took a minute to realize what was going on.
It was of some value but didn’t really seem to be going anywhere in terms of “what to do” or how to resolve the situation or how to improve communications. These “Christianist” fanatics made it their entire life’s goal to hound and harass and murder Dr. Tiller, his family and anyone else working in the clinic just because. And yet there is little to no outrage in ANY rightwing circles, Christian or otherwise, that I’ve seen. Fox & it’s mouthpieces, O’Reilly & Limbaugh, can call Tiller a murderer constantly, and no one protests.
It was depressing watching it. No solutions. Rightwingers want a fascist oppressive regime where they call the shots.
None of these “christianist” murderers care a fig about the fetuses, no matter what they say. These sick perverted twisted individuals are willing to go to jail for murdering an adult in the name of the “sanctity” of the “fetus.” Once a kid is born, though, these are same sick perverted twisted self-righteous selfish sh*ts who’ll say: get a job, ya slacker; don’t look to “society” to help you.
Ooooohhhh. Hot diggity.
I’m not sure what you’re talking about.
It’s a great video of a CEO of a company that produces solar panels in an environmentally friendly way and that did everything humanly possible to produce them in the US (still has the factory in MA, btw). The government of Massachusetts stepped up to help this company thrive in the US, but the Obama administration turned its back on them.
Btw, the CEO in the video – the one loudly pointing out the BS of Obama a few months ago – suddenly and somewhat mysteriously resigned about a month ago.
Agreed. I have seen that.
Let’s all be nice, but we do have history to consider.
Agreed.
And lose the gray text.
Something I’d like to know: Is there any easy way to find the last comment I posted on any particular thread? I mean, it’s place in the sequence of comments. Sometimes I post something, come back hours later, there’s like 50 or 60 newer comments and I have to scan up and down looking for my comment in order to pick up the sequence and continue on. Any easier way?
See the edit function is still fucked up. Ain’t technology wonderful. Love it when they improve something that was just fine the way it was.
Also, liked it much better when posts on Seminal (now MyFDL) were numbered.
At least for comments on threads at “MyFDL”, you can go to the tool box on the right hand side of the page near the top, click on “My Profile” (yours), then click on the tab for “Activity” – it will display your comments, identify the thread and if you click “View” it will take you directly to the comment in the appropriate thread where the comment was posted.
Exactly! That’s the subject of Chris Hedges’ great article yesterday on TruthDig.com.
http://www.truthdig.com/report/print/the_world_liberal_opportunists_made_20101025/
LOL! Love it!
LOL! This is a great morning for snarky jibes at our sad excuse for a President.
Thanks. Now if I can just learn to follow those steps…
Come on over and share any updates if you’d like. :)
